MARK SCHOENBAUM wife Sondra and Dante
On behalf of the membership and the Board of Directors, I want to welcome you to the Westside Nut Club’s Annual Fall Festival and our Centennial Celebration. This festival is possible because of the hundreds of volunteer hours given by our membership and the support of the community of Evansville. Take a leisurely stroll down Franklin Street: talk to old friends and new, have a few tasty treats from one of over 130 non-for-profit food booths, play an arcade game, ride one of Mid-America’s Amusement rides, take a chance at the 50/50 Half Pot and take time to watch local talent at the main stage. There is something for everyone to enjoy at this year’s Fall Festival.
We’d like to invite you to West Franklin Street and partake in the festivities. There is something for everyone. Entertainment, rides for the young at heart, and over 100 local non-porofit food booths. Bring the family, support your communities all while making memories at this year’s 100th West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. Hope to see you there! Mike Hahn 2021 festival Chairman

2021 Booklet Chairman Message
LICENSED-BONDED FULLY INSURED
BRETT WILLIAMS AMBERLY WALKER & SADIE It is an absolute honor to be the Booklet Chairman for the 100th year of the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. When I think about all the good that the West Side Nut Club has done for the community over the last century, it is truly humbling to be a part of such an amazing organization. So many individuals deserve a special thanks for pulling off this amazing event, including all of my West Side Nut Club Brothers and their families that sacrifice their time and effort to give back to our amazing community. I also want to extend a special thanks to all of our sponsors for their continued support. Without community support, the Fall Festival never would have grown into what it has become over the last 100 years. On behalf of the entire West Side Nut Club Family, my family, and myself, welcome to the 100th West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. We look forward to a safe, fun, and successful week on Franklin Street. Brett Williams 2021 Booklet Chairman

In 1921 The Nut Club formally organized and “The Fall Festival” began as an annual event on West Franklin Street.
Today, the Alexander family: Tom, Matthew, Andrew, Jon, and David Hatchett, are part of a team of 14 funeral directors. Cemetery Superintendent, Chris Whiteley is a proud Nut Club Member.
A.D. and Kenneth Alexander, both West Side Nut Club past presidents, watched the festival grow to become the largest in the Midwest. Annual attendance averages 150,000 visitors.
“Thank You, West Side Nut Club, For 100 Years of Excellent Community Service!”

Rockturnal Emissions Tuesday, October 5 11:00 am - 1:00 pm The Benjamin & Anna Bosse Foundation Stage
ROCKTURNAL EMISSIONS made their debut in the tri-state area New Year’s Eve 2017. Although we’ve only been playing together for about a year, Deb Rust and Chuck Flaim have over 70 years combined playing and performing experience. Prior to returning to the area, Deb toured and sang backup with the Marty Balin Band. Marty Balin, a member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was the lead guitarist, who along with Grace Slick, founded the 60’s rock band The Jefferson Airplane. The Airplane later became The Jefferson Starship which, in turn, evolved into The Marty Balin Band. Chuck Flaim has been performing in the area for years and is a multi-time state champion on the mountain dulcimer as well as a 4 time state champion of original, instrumental music composition. We’ve combined our styles to create an exciting, entertaining, and powerful duo that has made 2018 our breakout year in the area. If you haven’t gotten to hear us yet, check us out- we’ll rock your socks off.

Stage Sound by
PRO AUDIO SERVICES
Scott Winzinger Wednesday, October 6 11:00 am - 1:00 pm The Benjamin & Anna Bosse Foundation Stage
Born and raised in Long Island NY Scott has been playing music around the Evansville area for the past 30 years. He has performed at many popular Franklin Street venues including Sportsmans, Buds, Chasers, Lamascos, Franklin Street Tavern, Riverbend and Smittys. He plays songs from most every decade including todays hits.
Lindsey Williams Wednesday, October 6 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Stage 2 Lindsey James Williams is a local music staple of over 20 years. His style offers a range of oldies, rock, and many of his own original songs all woven together with on-the-fly studio quality effects and live recordings known as looping. While his guitar can sound like drums, bass and electric guitar, a tasteful acoustic and vocal core makes for sing-a-long fun and surprise favorites as a full band sound takes shape from a lone performer. 60
Haywire Wednesday, October 6 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm Stage 2
Haywire is an Evansville based band playing your favorite Country, Classic Rock, Blues, and Original hits. This All Star cast of musicians have traveled the country playing beside the likes of Luke Bryan, Confederate Railroad, as well as, opening for such greats as John Michael Montgomery, Doug Stone, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker and many more. Lead singer Joe Greulich and guitar/vocalist Tim Smith celebrated 25 years as bandmates earlier this year. Jeff Miracle (Whip) on bass/vocals, and Pat Howard on drums complete the cast. Be sure to catch them Wednesday evening following Amatuer Hour.
Troy Miller Thursday, October 7 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Stage 2 Singer/songwriter Troy Miller born & raised in Southern Indiana is a powerhouse guitar player and crooner. It’s a sight to watch him perform his yesteryear repertoire as if channeling the favorites of Leon Redbone, the energy of Jerry Lee soothed with the baritone voice of Johnny Cash or dare I say Robert Mitchum. He pays homage to this part of the world he holds so dear in his originals “Warrick County Cowboy”, “Sterling Girl” & co-written w/ Jubilee Fly “Stop Light City.” He is honored to be playing at the 100th year West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. 61
Williams & Crooke Thursday, October 7 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Stage 2
The duo of Mike Crooke and Lindsey James Williams grew from a chance meeting in a local music store in 2013. Their shared interests and musical tastes shape a sound ranging from Pink Floyd to Simon and Garfunkel and far beyond. The result combines respectful treatment of familiar classic songs played with the serious fun that comes from two friends that really love to play.
Annabel Whitledge Music Thursday, October 7 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm Stage 2 Annabel Whitledge is a 14 year old Nashville singer/ songwriter based out of Henderson, KY. Annabel started singing as a young child in church and quickly developed a passion for music and the stage. Her voice, coupled with coaching from local artists, landed her an opportunity to hit her first Nashville stage at age ten. By age 12, she was recording her first EP with legendary country music singer, Jeff Bates. With Bates taking her under his wing, Annabel released her first song, “I Woke Up”, to nation wide radio at 12 years old. Her second release to radio, “No Strings”, won a HMMA (Hollywood Music & Media Award) for 2021. Annabel is young, full of fire, and her passion for country music is just beginning. 62
Josh Merritt Friday, October 8 11:00 am - 1:00 pm The Benjamin & Anna Bosse Foundation Stage Authenticity can’t be faked. So when an artist hails from the heartland and shares stories drawn from personal experience, the music resonates in ways that genuinely express their passion and purpose. Josh Merritt is one of those artists. A native of Owensboro, Kentucky, he inherited the grit and honesty so essential to heartland culture. Having spent the better part of the past decade honing his chops on the Southern tour circuit, Merritt slides effortlessly into his own on debut studio release Reynolds Station, a stirring collection of autobiographical songs that recount his tumultuous childhood in the clutches of rural America’s amphetamine epidemic. A countrified concept album, it’s a grim testament to the tragedy that has upended so many lives and led to the loss of both faith and fortitude. Taken from his young mother as she struggled with drug addiction and raised by his grandparents, Merritt experienced the effects of substance abuse at close range. “I’m not necessarily trying to impart any big lesson here,” Merritt says, “I’m just trying to tell people about what I’ve experienced, to share this album with people who have gone through the same thing so maybe they’ll be able to relate and find a connection to their own experience.”
Jake Gaither Friday, October 8 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm Stage 2 I’m a singer/songwriter raised in a small town in Indiana called Osgood. I Have been playing and performing music for over 15 years. My main musical influences would be my father who I have a band with currently and 90s to today’s Country. My musical styling ranges from Johnny Cash to Luke Combs and pretty much anything in between. My writing style is about the same. Just a smalltown guy with big City dreams! 63
Tailgate Revival Friday, October 8 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Stage 2
Forming in early fall, 2016, Tailgate Revival has spent the past four years making a name for themselves in the Midwest. Known for their high-energy brand of Country music, while also being able to strip it down for an acoustic set here and there, this quintet puts on one hell of a show. Between their own original work, and their ability to cover just about any Country artist at the drop of a hat, the band has honed their ability to work together seamlessly, bringing what most would call a “big city sound” to Midwest bars, venues, and festivals. Drawing on the influence of Garth Brooks, Blake Shelton, and Joe Diffie, Tailgate Revival has grown from a bar-based cover band, to a full fledged power-house of a country western act… having opened for artists like Travis Tritt, Lo Cash, Randy Houser, Colt Ford, Craig Campbell, Darryl Worley, Michael Ray, Riley Green, & Jordan Davis to name a few. Whether you’re looking for someone to bring the energy to a Friday night venue, an acoustic performance to set the mood, or an opener for one of the many Country acts that roll through The Midwest, Tailgate Revival will bring the party every time.
Kenna Elper & Trent Glisson Saturday, October 9 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm The Benjamin & Anna Bosse Foundation Stage
Kenna Elpers is a Nashville recording artist from Southern Indiana who recently relocated to Nashville,TN to continue pursuing her musical journey in country music. Kenna has opened for many well known artists throughout the industry along with some of her very own country music idols. She has played at many notable venues countrywide. With her energetic talents and strong songwriting skills the stage she creates will be a show full of fun and excitement. Trent Glisson is a singer/songwriter from Gastonia North Carolina who moved to Nashville to start his musical journey at the age of 23. Trent has a regular residency at Luke’s 32 Bridge and Jason Aldean‘s Kitchen and Rooftop Bar on Broadway in Nashville along with many notable venues countrywide. With his carefully crafted song lyrics and his ability to entertain this is a show not to miss. Kenna and Trent met each other in LA while both pursuing their music endeavors, only to find out that they live just a few hours away from each other. Together they have written multiple songs, shared many stages, and have created many memories along the way. These two artists together on stage create a fun, original, and energetic environment for every crowd. 64

T
he West Side of Evansville, Indiana has, in local terms, considerable historical and cultural significance. For many years it was physically cut off from the main part of the city by Pigeon Creek and the wide swath of factories that once made the creek an important industrial corridor. Further isolated, culturally, by a heavy settlement of German immigrants in the late 1880s, the West Side developed in its own way and at its own pace. By the turn of the century it had achieved a strong sense of community and self-sufficiency.
The History of Evansville’s
West Side From a little place known as “Independence” to a vibrant commercial and residential community.
The West Franklin Street area became a retail and service center second only to downtown. The 100-foot-wide street itself became something of a civic plaza. Neighbors, sharing ties of family and ethnic background, gathered there to socialize as well as to conduct business. When farmers from the western townships - who shared many of the same family and ethnic bonds - came into town to do their weekly “trading”, “town” to them most often meant West Franklin Street. The West Franklin Street district extends across the center of the western half of a 480-acre (more or less) tract of land, bisected by Pigeon Creek that was platted in 1837 as the “City of Lamasco”. The proprietors were John and William Law, James B. McCall (or Macall) and Lucius H. Scott, and the novel name of their town was constructed from the first letters of their surnames. While the portion east of the creek developed into a town and was incorporated in 1847 as Lamasco City, the part to the west remained largely unsettled. By the 1860s it had acquired the name “Independence”, possibly because it had retained its independent status when Lamasco City merged in 1857 with Evansville.
“
. . . the feeling of a place where neighbors still greet one one another and feel comfortably “at home” make historic West Franklin Street as congenial a destination for generation of West Siders as it was for their forbearers.
In the years following the Civil War, Independence began to experience an influx of settlers, most of whom were of native German stock. The increasing population of the area and its development potential made it an attractive target for Evansville expansion, and in spring, 1870, the Evansville Common Council announced its intention to annex the area. To counter the annexation action, some residents proposed incorporation as a separate town with the name “Madduxport” after Alexander Maddux, a justice of the peace. However, these plans proved useless. By early summer, Independence was made part of the Evansville Municipality. “Independence” as a name lingered in usage for a time, but eventually it gave way to the geographic designation “West Side”.
“
The growth and urbanization of the West Side continued into the new century. The rough slopes of Coal Mine and Babytown Hills on the western edge of the low-land community were transformed into West Side residential districts, and the top of Coal Mine Hill was crowned in 1918 by the classically designed Francis Joseph Reitz High School. Industry became more diversified and West Franklin Street acquired a respectable “Main Street” appearance as new, well-designed commercial and institutional structures filled in vacant lots or replaced modest buildings of earlier times. In its role as community socializer, it helped to foster the emergence of a widespread and unequalled sense of civic pride that resulted in the formation of organizations specifically for the betterment of the area, such as the West Side Nut Club. Like other traditional shopping hubs, West Franklin Street faces an increased competition from commercial development on the city’s outskirts. Yet the district has a charm and vitality not found in modern suburban commercial centers. Its spruced up buildings and attractive landscaping, and its small town atmosphere within the larger city - the feeling of a place where neighbors still greet one another and feel comfortably “at home” make historic West Franklin Street as congenial a destination for generations of West Siders as it was for their forbearers. 72 127

2021 Main Parade Grand Marshal
The West Side Nut Club would like to extend our appreciation to our Main Parade Grand Marshals, the retirees of the Evansville Fire Department, the Evansville Police Department and the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office. The West Side Nut Club’s 100th Fall Festival theme is “Celebrating a Century of Service” which honors all of our service men and women who have served and protected our community throughout the years. The birth of the Evansville Police Department dates back to 1863 with the employment of two men assigned to the duty of checking downtown buildings at night. At the end of the Civil War in 1865 it became necessary for the community to enlarge its protective force and the department increased its number to sixteen and fell under the supervision of Evansville’s Mayor, William Baker. Because there were more officers to oversee, it became necessary to appoint a supervisor for the police department. Today, the Evansville Police Department on average consists of 286 Sworn Officers and 31 civilian employees. The Evansville Police Department strives to constantly connect with the community through many outlets including National Night Out, Coffee with a Cop, Cops Connecting with Kids, and Choose Not to Lose Kids Camp, just to name a few. The Evansville Fire Department was established in 1888 with three fire stations located throughout the city. It wasn’t until 1911 that the first motorized was purchased by the department. Today, the Evansville Fire Department is a career department with 273 members working in a three-platoon system. Each platoon is made up of 81 firefighters, one Arson Investigator, and two Suppression District Chiefs. The remaining staff serve in support and administrative roles. The EFD responds from 14 fire stations located throughout the City of Evansville, with 17-Front Line Apparatus. Special operations teams consist of Hazardous Materials, Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Technical Rescue, and Water Rescue. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office was established in 1818. Today, the Sheriff’s Office employs more than 250 people. The office consists of sworn merit deputies, confinement officers and civilian support personnel. The office is divided into three divisions: Administration, Confinement and Operations. The Sheriff’s Office is not a Department. It is distinguishable from all other law enforcement agencies in that it is directly accountable to the citizens through the election of the Sheriff. The Sheriff is independent and answers to the Constitution, the law and the people of the county. No mayor, board, council or commission can hire or fire the Sheriff, or has the authority to direct or interfere with the internal operations of the Sheriff’s Office.
