“A Commitment to Community” WEST SIDE NUT CLUB October 3rd - 8th, 2022 FALL FESTIVAL

2022 This year, because of the huge success of the Fall Festival and the 50-50 Half Pot, the West Side Nut Club will donate approximately $700,000 to charitable and/or non-profit organizations. Additionally, the club will spend over $50,000 on a project at the Boys and Girls Club new athletic field. All of the above dedicated to and made possible by the West Side Businessmen who had the foresight to form the civic-minded West Side Nut Club in 1921. Dick Barchet

West Side Nut Club Formed

On March 16, 1921 this group of businessmen met and formed the basics of the West Side Nut Club. Within the first 6 months, they elected officers &board members, named the club, incorporated and wrote the by-laws, selected the Acorn as the symbol and penned the official slogan: Root, Boost or Scoot. The first official WSNC Fall Festival was heldin November; it was considered a great success but left them with $400 in debt. In order to pay off the debt, they assessed each member $10. Over the first 25 years, the club struggled through the Great Depression and World War II. With little or no money, they used their influence to persuade the city to build a new bridge on Franklin Street and to put the new municipal Golf course and Mesker Park Zoo on the West Side. They kept pressuring the city and county to pave the dirt and rock streets and roads and to extend St. Joseph Ave. north into the county. During the second 25 years, the Club started prospering and expanded the Festival into what it is today. Food booths increased as did donations to non-profit groups. Queen and Amateur contests and professional entertainment were added. Membership was expanded to 300 active members and the Board was expanded also.

These enterprising and hard working businessmen, all of whom were members of the West Side Business Association, held small Festivals in 1914, 1917 & 1920 to try to attract people to their stores. They met daily for lunch and decided that they needed an organized group to use their influence to make improvements to the West Side and to handle the duties of running the Festivals.

1971 to Present, revenues & donations have continued to increase astronomically. Spring Projects were started, the first of which were clean-ups of Franklin St., Mesker Park Zoo, Reitz Hill and West Side Library Park. Later, the Club started performing larger construction projects. Shelter houses, rest rooms and ball fields were constructed at West Side Little League, Golfmoor, Tekoppel, Moutoux and Junior Football League fields. Sidewalks and landscaping were developed or improved on Franklin Street and at West Side Library Park. Several large projects were performed at Mesker Park Zoo, Helfrich Golf Course, USI, Ozanam Family Shelter and Reitz High School. With the Club performing at least one project every year, we have been able to perform many more projects than what are listed above. Each project costs approximately $25,000, plus 75 to 100 members donating their time and talent.

The History of the West Side Nut Club Prologue In the early 1900’s, the West Side Businessmen were striving to find ways to increase exposure and bring more people to the West Franklin Street area. Access to the West Side was very difficult and time consuming, especially from the West and North outlying areas, because no main roads leading to Franklin Street were available.

On September 18th, 2021, Posey County Sheriff Deputy Bryan Hicks was shot in the head while responding to a welfare check call in New Harmony, IN. Deputy Hicks was immediately transported to Deaconess Midtown where once stable, he went into surgery to remove part of his skull to reduce swelling and removal of any skull fragments. Luckily, the bullet went through Deputy Hicks’ head instead of being lodged in his brain. While at Deaconess he was on a ventilator and feeding tube. On October 12th, Deputy Hicks was flown by air ambulance to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab (SRAL) in Chicago, IL. While at SRAL, his trach tube was removed and Deputy Hicks began Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies. These therapies addressed standing and walking and getting dressed. One of his more intensive therapies was for speech, specifically the Broca region of the brain that is responsible for speech production. This portion of his injury caused him extreme diffi culty forming words and sentences.

Deputy Hicks and his wife Tammy have been at Frazier Rehab in Louisville since February and will remain there while he continues to make progress. While attending therapy at Frazier, Deputy Hicks has made tremendous progress in all aspects of his recovery. He uses a Lingraphica device to assist with speech and Aphasia, he wears prism glasses to assist with any eye misalignment and double vision, he has had Botox injections in his right arm and leg to loosen the tightness or “tone” in his muscles, and he attends aqua therapy twice a week where the bottom of the pool is actually a treadmill and increases joint flexibility, muscle strength and balance. The future looks extremely positive for Deputy Hicks. In the next couple of months an EEG will be completed to make sure there has not been any seizure activity and he could possibly begin driving lessons.

Deputy Hicks is a 1998 graduate from Reitz High School on Evansville’s West Side. His recovery is nothing short of a miracle, and with his determination and tenacity, everyone that knows him would expect nothing less.

Deputy Hicks stayed at SRAL until he was flown back to Evansville on December 21st for his cranioplasty surgery. He did so well after the surgery that he was transferred to Deaconess Gateway Encompass where he continued with his Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapies and had his feeding tube removed. Once there was availability, Deputy Hicks was transferred to Frazier Rehab in Louisville, KY.

Deputy Hicks got to throw out the first pitch before the St. Louis Cardinals game against the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium on June 25th. Pictured from left to right; brothers Drew and Kyle Hicks, wife Tammy Hicks, Deputy Bryan Hicks, mother Cindy Hicks and father Keith Hicks.

ROCKTURNAL EMISSIONS, composed of Deborah Rust and Chuck Flaim, has over 60 years of combined musical performing experience. What makes this duo so special is Deb. She had to move back into the southern Indiana area (lives near Evanston) to become care tender for her aging parents (actually, her father has since passed away) several years ago, but, prior to that, she had quite a musical journey. Deb is 53 years old. When she graduated high school, she was one of those people who couldn’t wait to leave the small town scene behind. So, she submitted an audition tape and was selected to be lead singer on a cruise ship that ran from Tampa to Cozumel for 1.5 years. Deb is also a songwriter, and while in Florida, she signed a recording contract with Hurricane Records. One day, while recording at Hurricane Records, she happened to catch the ear of a guitarist with the Marty Balin Band. FYI, Marty Balin is a twotime inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and is a founding member of The Jefferson Airplane, The Jefferson Starship, and The Marty Balin Band. The guitarist invited her to accompany him to California to audition for a position as a backup singer with Marty’s band. The tryout was successful, and, Deb joined The Marty Balin Band. She performed and toured in this capacity until she had to return to care for her family. By a stroke of luck, our paths crossed and we’ve begun performing as much as possible around the area while she’s here. I accompany Deb on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica, and background vocals. So, long story short, this girl can really bring it and we’re looking for booking opportunities. We started scheduling venues in December 2017 and have gigs currently booked into December 2021. Our style of music crosses several genres, but, we basically play classic rock, blues, Americana, and a bit of country(when requested). We’ve performed for many different types of venues ranging from the Schweitzer Fest in Tell City (headlined it in 2018 and 2019 and would have also in 2020 had it not been cancelled, 2021) to restaurants and bars such as CYO Brewing, TenOSix, The Brew Bridge and Bar Louie in Owensboro, Roca Bar North, The Hornet’s Nest, Duffy’s PubHouse,The Rooftop in Evansville, O’Bryan’s Bar & Grill in West Louisville, On Deck in Henderson, Crickets, Jennings Street Public House in Newburgh, The Old Fox Inn in Lynneville, The Half Moon Saloon in Mount Vernon, and the Galt House in Louisville. We were the opening musical act in 2019 for the premier outdoor music festival in Evansville, Indiana- the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. We’ve also performed for Live On The Banks and Friday After 5 in Owensboro, Rocky Pointe, Blue Heron Winery, Monkey Hollow Winery, Winzerwald Winery, and the American Legion as examples of types of venues we’ve entertained.

Singer/songwriter Troy Miller born & raised in Southern Indiana is a powerhouse guitar player and crooner. It’s a sight to watch him perform his yesteryear repertoire as if channeling the favorites of Leon Redbone, the energy of Jerry Lee soothed with the baritone voice of Johnny Cash or dare I say Robert Mitchum. He pays homage to this part of the world he holds so dear in his originals “Warrick County Cowboy”, “Sterling Girl” & co-written w/ Jubilee Fly “Stop Light City.” He is honored, again, to be playing at the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival.

Just a smalltown guy with big City dreams!

a singer/songwriter raised in a small town in Indiana called Osgood. I Have been playing and performing music for over 15 years. My main musical influences would be my father who I have a band with currently and 90s to today’s Country. My musical styling ranges from johnny cash to Luke combs and pretty much anything in between. My writing style is about the same.

Authenticity can’t be faked. So when an artist hails from the heartland and shares stories drawn from personal experience, the music resonates in ways that genuinely express their passion and purpose. Josh Merritt is one of those artists.

A native of Owensboro, Kentucky, he inherited the grit and honesty so essential to heartland culture. Having spent the better part of the past decade honing his chops on the Southern tour circuit, Merritt slides effortlessly into his own on debut studio release Reynolds Station, a stirring collection of autobiographical songs that recount his tumultuous childhood in the clutches of rural America’s amphetamine epidemic. A countrified concept album, it’s a grim testament to the tragedy that has upended so many lives and led to the loss of both faith and fortitude. Taken from his young mother as she struggled with drug addiction and raised by his grandparents, Merritt experienced the effects of substance abuse at close range. “I’m not necessarily trying to impart any big lesson here,” Merritt says, “I’m just trying to tell people about what I’ve experienced, to share this album with people who have gone through the same thing so maybe they’ll be able to relate and find a connection to their own experience.”I’m

Friday, October 7 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Drawing on the influence of Garth Brooks, Blake Shelton, and Joe Diffie, Tailgate Revival has grown from a bar-based cover band, to a full fledged power-house of a country western act… having opened for artists like Travis Tritt, Lo Cash, Randy Houser, Colt Ford, Craig Campbell, Darryl Worley, Michael Ray, Riley Green, & Jordan Davis to name a few.

Patriotic Soul is an all-volunteer band that started 8 years ago with the dream of making music to support our community by playing for events and fundraisers. Some of our venues have included Honor Flights, YMCA Pancake Breakfast, Jacobsvillage & the Order of the Owls. Our setlists vary depending on the event & audience, but include standard classic rock, country & dance charts. There is nothing like the feeling of playing live music together, knowing that our music brings joy to others & contributes to our community!

The Benjamin & Anna Bosse Foundation

Whether you’re looking for someone to bring the energy to a Friday night venue, an acoustic performance to set the mood, or an opener for one of the many Country acts that roll through The Midwest, Tailgate Revival will bring the party every time.

Between their own original work, and their ability to cover just about any Country artist at the drop of a hat, the band has honed their ability to work together seamlessly, bringing what most would call a “big city sound” to Midwest bars, venues, and festivals.
