2018 CLUB PRESIDENT
2018 FESTIVAL CHAIRMAN
MARK HEAD
TONY BOGAN
(Katharyn, Andy, Hazel, Mark and Jana) On behalf of the members of the West Side Nut Club, I would like to welcome you to the 2018 Fall Festival. This is the 97th year of the West Side Nut Club and the festival has developed greatly over the years. I am sure that the founders of the club in 1921 would be proud of how this event has blossomed into a community festival There are 135 not-for-profit organization booths lining the street to sell you whatever your heart desires in order to support their community mission. It is due to the community support of this event that makes Evansville a better place to live and raise our families. For this community support, we sincerely thank you. It will be a wonderful week to come out to visit with old friends, make new ones and to eat a few food items that we normally don’t. If you ever have a question or concern, please speak to a West Side Nut Club member in one of the traditional straw hats. I look forward to seeing you on West Franklin Street. Enjoy!
(Tony, wife Theresa, Andy, & Eric)
My family and I would like to invite and welcome you and your families to the 97th West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. This year’s theme “A Community Tradition” tells everyone what the festival is about. Every ride you ride, all the food you eat helps the Nut Club and non-profit groups help our comminity. So it doesn’t matter if you come down to eat, ride the rides, see the parades or watch the talent shows, or just to see old friends. Thank you for helping us help our community. Every year our goal is to bring to you the best festival we can and I do not think that will ever change. Remember the festival begins on October 1st and runs until Saturday night, rain or shine. And from my family and all our members, THANK YOU! Hope to see you there

2018 FALL FESTIVAL ENTERTAINMENT
Bob Ballard Monday, October 1 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Main Stage Bob grew up in Jefferson Parish, LA, part of Greater New Orleans. Bob is steeped in New Orleans’ jazz and blues traditions. As a young man, Bob served as a policeman in Jefferson Parish for five years. He then began his music career as a rock singer / guitarist first switching from rhythm guitar to bass then, in his mid-thirties, to piano as he musically migrated back to his roots - New Orleans jazz and blues. He has worked with his own trios then synthesized them with Midi bass and rhythm tracks so that he could work solo in New Orleans’ many piano bars. Bob has played in venues from Key West to the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago. He is a journeyman musician accustomed to singing four hours a night, five nights a week. Bob has become a fixture in Evansville - with a regular following of several hundred ardent fans.
Keith Vincent Tuesday, October 2 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Main Stage Keith Vincent has been an active performing musician for over 30 years. He has, at one time or another done duty as a front man for rock and country bands, a solo guitarist, studio musician, vocalist, and at present is performing as a solo acoustic act with a twist. Aside from covering the great singer songwriter tunes of the 70s, 80s, and 90s with just vocal and guitar, Keith is also prepared to lay down some hard driving dance grooves with the use of custom created tracks. In addition to a large catalog of great original material, his shows include acoustic favorites of the 60s through the present day, as well as contemporary and classic songs gleaned from the rich arena of country music. Keith is also known for his island music and summer fun oriented shows. An accomplished guitarist, he plays a variety of instrumental styles. Keith has an interactive presentation that assures the audience a fun, entertaining experience.

Sarah Werner Wednesday, October 3 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Main Stage My love for music began in the choir loft of a small church in Gallipolis, Ohio and is the place my musical story begins. I learned piano and violin at an early age and picked up a guitar in high school. I thought I just “had to” play the guitar to write music. Over the years, I have written many songs inspired by life experience and a wild imagination. I have played various venues and events in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky. I am extremely blessed to have the opportunity to share my music with others.

Dogtown Three Thursday, October 4 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Stage 2
DogTown Three is made up of Paul Kuban on guitar and vocals, Kim Kuban on bass and vocals and Brent Miller on drums. After playing together in other bands, it only seemed right that we should be playing music together. We’re three friends who share a common love of playing music and having a great time doing it. When we came up with the name DogTown Three, we wanted a name that Evansville people would remember and relate to. Everyone knows about Dogtown. Being boaters and spending a lot of time on the river, the name was a natural fit for us. We have played locally for six years at area clubs, private, civic and political events. Our song list is a combination of classic rock, new country, and electric blues. What a great band! Our group really enjoyed your music! You all are great!! You have a good mix of music, You guys sounded great last night. You guys were awesome!! Thanks for making my birthday celebration so much fun and so memorable! You guys rock! We love DT3, Love your music We had a great time! Who can say it any better than our fans via Facebook. There’s nothing more rewarding than hearing kind words from the people who come out to hear us.

Kim “Rock” McCrady, the dynamic drummer, also had been a musician since childhood when she would perform with her entire family. The vocalist has been performing since her preteens and is no stranger to the stages of Evansville’s Fall Festival. The addition of composer and guitarist Theophilus Akai was a no-brainer for one of the nation’s largest street festivals. The duo has been performing together since 2014 and have toured internationally. The pair have almost always been seen within a full band setting, so an acoustic performance at the Fall Fest will be a rejuvenating change for fans. This will be a can’t-miss and intimate performance for all ages!

T
he West Side of Evansville, Indiana has, in local terms, considerable historical and cultural significance. For many years it was physically cut off from the main part of the city by Pigeon Creek and the wide swath of factories that once made the creek an important industrial corridor. Further isolated, culturally, by a heavy settlement of German immigrants in the late 1880s, the West Side developed in its own way and at its own pace. By the turn of the century it had achieved a strong sense of community and self-sufficiency.
The History of Evansville’s
West Side From a little place known as “Independence” to a vibrant commercial and residential community.
The West Franklin Street area became a retail and service center second only to downtown. The 100-foot-wide street itself became something of a civic plaza. Neighbors, sharing ties of family and ethnic background, gathered there to socialize as well as to conduct business. When farmers from the western townships - who shared many of the same family and ethnic bonds - came into town to do their weekly “trading”, “town” to them most often meant West Franklin Street. The West Franklin Street district extends across the center of the western half of a 480-acre (more or less) tract of land, bisected by Pigeon Creek that was platted in 1837 as the “City of Lamasco”. The proprietors were John and William Law, James B. McCall (or Macall) and Lucius H. Scott, and the novel name of their town was constructed from the first letters of their surnames. While the portion east of the creek developed into a town and was incorporated in 1847 as Lamasco City, the part to the west remained largely unsettled. By the 1860s it had acquired the name “Independence”, possibly because it had retained its independent status when Lamasco City merged in 1857 with Evansville.
“
. . . the feeling of a place where neighbors still greet one one another and feel comfortably “at home” make historic West Franklin Street as congenial a destination for generation of West Siders as it was for their forbearers.
In the years following the Civil War, Independence began to experience an influx of settlers, most of whom were of native German stock. The increasing population of the area and its development potential made it an attractive target for Evansville expansion, and in spring, 1870, the Evansville Common Council announced its intention to annex the area. To counter the annexation action, some residents proposed incorporation as a separate town with the name “Madduxport” after Alexander Maddux, a justice of the peace. However, these plans proved useless. By early summer, Independence was made part of the Evansville Municipality. “Independence” as a name lingered in usage for a time, but eventually it gave way to the geographic designation “West Side”.
“
The growth and urbanization of the West Side continued into the new century. The rough slopes of Coal Mine and Babytown Hills on the western edge of the low-land community were transformed into West Side residential districts, and the top of Coal Mine Hill was crowned in 1918 by the classically designed Francis Joseph Reitz High School. Industry became more diversified and West Franklin Street acquired a respectable “Main Street” appearance as new, well-designed commercial and institutional structures filled in vacant lots or replaced modest buildings of earlier times. In its role as community socializer, it helped to foster the emergence of a widespread and unequalled sense of civic pride that resulted in the formation of organizations specifically for the betterment of the area, such as the West Side Nut Club. Like other traditional shopping hubs, West Franklin Street faces an increased competition from commercial development on the city’s outskirts. Yet the district has a charm and vitality not found in modern suburban commercial centers. Its spruced up buildings and attractive landscaping, and its small town atmosphere within the larger city - the feeling of a place where neighbors still greet one another and feel comfortably “at home” make historic West Franklin Street as congenial a destination for generations of West Siders as it was for their forbearers. 58 127

In 1921 The Nut Club formally organized and “The Fall Festival” began as an annual event on West Franklin Street.
In 1921 A.D. established the West Side’s first funeral home. Today, the fifth generation Alexander Family (Tom, Matthew, Andrew, and Jon, all licensed funeral directors) operates Alexander’s Five Locations. Jeff Alvey and Mitch Culley are active Nut Club members.
A.D. and Kenneth Alexander, both West Side Nut Club past presidents, watched the festival grow to become the largest in the Midwest. Annual attendance averages 150,000 visitors.
