Welcome Dear Members: The summer heat is here and there is no better way to cool down than to join us at our magnificent pool complex with the Oasis and Splash Pools. Also enjoy the increasingly popular pool bar for a refreshment while socializing with your fellow members. Please note a few reminders about our Pool Policies in this Club Times. We look forward to entertaining you and your family members during the exciting July 4th activities, where there is something fun for all ages and great camaraderie with neighbors. July 4th events are not the only events we have scheduled in summer months, and I would like to bring to your attention the following events that you sure don’t want to miss… like the Heart Healthy Culinary Event, Karaoke and Trivia Nights, and several Yacht Club gatherings. As a courteous reminder, our Security Department continues to be vigilant in identifying vendors, guests and homeowners that are going above the speed limit in our community. On average, our Security team’s effort includes actively using the radar for 900 vehicles per month. Please be mindful to monitor your speed and come to a full and complete stop at all intersections for the safety of all who are using the community roadways. Our Security Department also has seen a 100% increase over last year in the number of calls to our Security gate. Please be reminded that the most efficient way to create guest passes is to use the ABDI guest access system, which can be completed on our web site or your smart phone. If you must contact the gate, please leave a message as they are managing over 5,800 cars accessing Wexford each week, along with answering phones, issuing guest and daily passes,

and managing commercial decals. If you need assistance in setting this up, please contact Latasha Glover at the Security Guard House. As a leadership update to make you aware of, Megan Morris our Director of Marketing and Member Services has made the difficult decision to move on from Wexford due to her desire to have more time with her family and pursue career opportunities in Beaufort, which is where she lives. Her timing is such that several Marketing projects have been accomplished that hopefully will support our efforts in the coming years and we thank Megan for her exemplary efforts during her tenure. In the interim, our Member Services Coordinator, Shelby Price will assist in the weekly community and member communications coupled with other tasks. We are actively recruiting for Megan’s replacement, and I appreciate everyone’s patience during this transition period. Our team continues to work hard to provide memorable experiences for you, your family and guests. As we prepare our fall calendar, if you have some innovative ideas on event programming that you would like to see at Wexford please reach out to me or one of our Department Leaders.

Regards,

Ryan

Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors, Happy 4th of July – 4th of July is one of the best holidays here at Wexford. Cart parade, activities, burgers and hot dogs plus a lot more on the buffet, programs and activities for all ages make Wexford a fun spot to enjoy the 4th. Take advantage of the opportunities, you and your family and friends will be glad you did.

• Evacuate, don’t stay: A few brave souls stayed in place here during Matthew and all those I talked with later said they would not do that again, especially when the tidal surge came over the sea wall. Property damage can be rebuilt, people – not as easy. Also keep in mind that local police and emergency health personnel generally evacuate so you will really be alone in case of emergency which jeopardizes you and your family.

David Jackson President

Welcome New Members — The results of a member survey back in the spring revealed that about 20% of owners have been here a year or less and 45% of owners have been here less than 5 years. It’s important to welcome our new, and relatively new, members to Wexford by including them in our programs and introducing them to owners with similar interests. We have an organized new member orientation process that helps get that started, including a dinner with other new members, management and board representatives, but please take the opportunity to ask a new member to dinner, to play golf or tennis or whatever your hobby happens to be. You will make a new member feel they made the right choice in choosing Wexford and just may find a new friend. Hurricane Season — We’re about a month into hurricane season and, fingers crossed, wishing us all luck that we do not get have a severe weather event this season. But as we learned recently with Hurricane Matthew, the threat is real and can come at any time as we learned with Hurricane Irma the following year, thankfully much less severe than Matthew. Some lessons from those events were: • Be ready ahead of time: Hurricanes are unpredictable and can change paths quickly. Have a plan on your evacuation destination, what you will take with you and what needs to be taken care of at your home here on short notice.

• Make sure your property insurance is up to date: Some folks were disappointed when they went to make claims for damage after Matthew. Coverages, damage limits and deductibles should all be checked to see if they are appropriate for the risk you wish to take. Town Hall Meeting — One thing that came out of the owner survey taken last year was that owners wanted more communication with management and the board. We’ve tried to take that seriously with the summaries of the board meetings that are sent out via email the week following the meetings and by having a town hall meeting last fall at the Sonesta, due to social distancing requirements at the time. To continue to have active dialog with members, answer your questions and hear your concerns, we are tentatively scheduling a meeting for late July so watch for that announcement. As with the meeting last year, in person and Zoom participation with both be available. Finally... Be Safe — There are always lots of kids and grandkids around in the summer at Wexford, it’s part of the fun. Just take note when you’re driving or backing out of your driveway that there may be a wee one on a small bike on one of the trails or sidewalk that’s a little hard to see, especially when you’re not used to someone being there. And for the same reason, please try to drive just a little slower and more cautious. And for parents and grandparents, please follow our guidelines with regard to bike, scooter and golf cart usage for your special young family members. We want everyone to be safe and come back next year.

All the best,

David

Jones) were each sent a copy of the Agreements for execution. The schedule to perform the work was discussed. Before moving any dirt and closing off the existing Entry drive, the Permit for Site work will need to be pulled from the Town. JS Construction stated they would start the Site work permit process on June 21. They also would place an order for underground utility locates at that time. Cobia Tournament Bill Busch and his boat, Sara Jeane II, won the cobia tournament held June 5, bringing in two nice cobias that weighed 25 and 26 pounds. They also caught a third keeper cobia, and in total caught more than 20 cobia that didn’t meet the 36-inch minimum size. Aboard were Wexford members Gary Socha and Peter Carlson. Nine boats competed in the event. The weigh-in this year was held near the pool, with many nonfisherman onlookers enjoying the show! Our next fishing tournament will be the Inshore Tournament to be held in October.

Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony The Blessing of the Fleet, one of the Yacht Club’s semi-formal affairs was held on June 13. Harbour Master Mark Dryden opened the ceremony and introduced Commodore Peter Carlson. Commodore Carlson noted that there are more boats in the harbour now than at any time in the past, and this year to date has had more than 1200 lock excursions, compared to 700 in 2019. Yacht Club functions are having great success, and as every member of Wexford is also a member of the Wexford Yacht Club, turn outs to club events have been excellent. Commodore Carlson then introduced our two

speakers, Commander Schroeder of the Hilton Head Coast Guard Auxiliary, who spoke about the Auxiliary’s mission of improving safety on the water, and Commander Hilleary, the Commanding Officer of the USCG Savannah Air Station spoke about the Coast Guard’s missions of search and rescue and recanted one example of a Coast Guard rescue. Vice Commodore Cathy Sumpter then introduced Chaplin Giunta, who spoke of his background, then Blessed of the Fleet. The ceremony then adjourned and enjoyed an excellent dinner menu provided by Chef Frank. More than 80 members participated in the ceremony.

TIPS FROM THE GOLF PRO:

Start making cleaner shots with your irons

W

ouldn’t you like to stop hitting your irons fat? Here’s a drill that could help with that problem. • Take a tee and push it all the way into the turf, so that you can only see the top of it, but it’s not sticking up out of the ground. • Then, put your ball about half an inch behind the tee (which is barely visible). • Take a swing and focus your eyes on the top of the tee rather than the golf ball. • Your goal will be to “take out” the tee with your divot. If you do the opposite, it’s a sign that you’re doing something wrong from takeaway to impact to strike the turf instead of the tee. This drill will help you learn how to make impact with the ball first and then the turf, thus eliminating a chunky shot.

Since you can’t put a tee in the turf like this during your round, simply focus on a blade of grass in front of the ball before your iron shots.

TENNIS & PICKLEBALL TIP:

Hydration needs to be crucial part of your gameplan Here are Hydration tips from the USTA Sports Science page: Before Practice or Matchplay: Drink at least 16-20 oz. of water (one standard bottle) or electrolyte-enhanced sports drink two hours before the tennis practice or matchplay. During Practice or Matchplay: Drink 4-8 oz. (4-8 normal swallows or 1.4-1.2 a regular size bottle) for a light to medium sweater and 8-16 oz. (8-16 normal swallows or a 1.2-3.4 full regular size bottle) for a heavy sweater of water or electrolyteenhanced carbohydrate fluid every changeover during practice or matchplay (32-60 oz. of fluid per hour). If practice or matchplay is expected to be longer than 60 minutes, an electrolyte-enhanced carbohydrate beverage would be a better option.

After Practice or Matchplay: Drink at least one regular-size bottle (20 oz.) of electrolyte-enhanced carbohydrate sports drink per pound of body weight lost within a two-hour period. Replace between 120-200 percent of body weight lost per exercise session. It is also helpful to consume some protein to help aid recovery. 10-20 grams of protein within 30 minutes of practice or matchplay will help speed recovery.

Wexford Foundation News

O

Foundation holds its first Garden Party

ver 70 Wexford members attended this inaugural Garden Party, which was held to show the Foundation’s appreciation for their major donors during 2020. Stephen Carter, the Foundation’s Chair thanked everyone for their outstanding support during an unprecedented year when traditional fundraising events could not be held owing to the Covid pandemic. The $100,000 of emergency funding which was raised together with a further $258.000 of sustaining grants awarded to 32 local charities was a record for the Foundation which is now in its 9th year of existence. “While the Covid pandemic is waning, the local needs in hunger, housing, poverty, and education are still prevalent,” Stephen said, “and the Foundation needs the support of its generous Wexford members and business sponsors to continue with the work we are doing.”

The Club Times • 12

The Garden Party was also an occasion to recognize the tireless work of the Grants Committee and Cyndi Duvall, Co-Chair of the Grants Committee, took the opportunity to introduce and thank her committee members. By special invitation, Cyndi also introduced the Reverend Nannette Pearson who founded the Sandalwood Food Pantry in 2009 and which has received a number of Wexford grants over the past few years. Nannette gave a stirring address thanking Wexford for supporting her agency which provides some 800 disadvantaged families with fresh nutritious food every week. The Garden Party was enjoyed by all who attended. The Foundation Trustees extend their sincere appreciation to Events Chair Shari Anderson along with the Wexford Clubhouse staff for their work in planning and hosting this event.
