THE HOME FRONT August Edition 2022
WE’RE CELEBRATING
WOMEN’S MONTH Welcome to the second issue of The Home Front – our internal newsletter that keeps you informed about all the exciting activities happening at Weylandts. In this issue you’ll get to see our DC staff in their new uniforms, be introduced to new employees, get tips for your mid-year performance check-ins, see inside Weylandtstudio’s latest penthouse project, and much more. Thanks to everyone for making the head office ‘names and faces’ shoot such a fun experience. We’re publishing the photos here, with an opening feature on Portia Ncinitwa, the heart and soul of our head office. We thought Women’s Month would be an appropriate time to shine the spotlight on this wonderful woman who has been part of the Weylandts family for an incredible 24 years. Portia literally brightens up our day with her positive energy and beautiful smile! It is a source of great pride to me that almost 50% of our staff are women. Our focus is to uplift and celebrate all women every day, and more especially this month, as we celebrate Women’s Month. Weylandts provides a platform for women to grow, contribute to our shared success and have their voices heard. This is a time in our country to cherish and value women, to uplift, uphold and keep them safe.
Enjoy the read.

P O R T I A N O M V U Y I S I N C I N I T WA HEAD OFFICE FAIRY GODMOTHER
“I was 26 when I started working at Weylandts. It was the first job I got after I moved to Cape Town from the Eastern Cape to be with my husband. He was working as a gardener at Chris’s home, so that’s how I met the family. I started by working in the Weylandts factory three days a week, cleaning and making coffee. Sometimes, on the other two days, I would work at Chris’s home. Can you believe Anna was only five-years-old then! In 1999 I got a permanent job at Weylandts, at the Durbanville store when it opened. We used to have a creche there. Customers would dump their children with me. It was the best job I had! I used to play on the skipping rope with the kids, change nappies, watch videos… It really used to make customers happy to leave their children there. When the creche closed, I started working in the Durbanville Kitchen, making food and coffee. No one knew how to use the coffee machine so Chris sent me on a barista course. Here at head office, everyone loves my coffees.”
“My husband is now living in Prieska in the Northern Cape, so I am looking after our children. Our 30-year-old has a job and has moved out of the house. Her three children live with my mother in the Eastern Cape. My other two children (24 and 17) live with me in Samora Machel, near Mitchells Plain. When I’m not at work, I like to be with my friends, eating lunch together.”
Guess what? Portia turns 50 on the 23rd of October. Her favourite chocolate is Kit Kat (wink wink).
MEET THE CAPE TOWN HEAD OFFICE Our head office in Cape Town’s Northgate Park is where many people work behind the scenes to make our business and stores a success. It’s a beautiful environment that reflects the Weylandts aesthetic, filled with inspiring pinboards and products that form part of planning and producing new ranges. We’ve got our finance, procurement, visual merchandising, marketing, IT, human resources, homeware, furniture and Weylandtstudio teams working from this large space. Get to know these colleagues through photos and a cool video shot by our in-house creatives.

We are encouraging managers to have an informal conversation with their direct reports to assess the first half of the financial year and to set goals for the second half. Check-ins are a great way to recognise accomplishments and identify opportunities for growth.
MID-YEAR PERFORMANCE CHECK-INS
HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR THE MEETING: 1.
Set an agenda This empowers the employee to have a meaningful conversation about their achievements and challenges.
2.
Allocate a dedicated time slot to each employee Make sure there are no distractions or interruptions from the rest of the team.
3.
Prepare for the meeting Ensure that you’re not scrambling while the conversation is taking place.
4.
Summerise the points After the meeting, summarise the points that were discussed and ensure that action items are executed.

COMMUNITY INITIATIVE
I K A M VA YO U T H S A N I TA RY P R O D U C T D R I V E In honour of Women’s Month, we have partnered with Ikamva Youth to collect sanitary products for teenage girls in less fortunate communities. You can be part of this initiative by donating any form of sanitary products. Your donation will be supporting some of the 640 girls at the following Ikamva Youth branches in the Western Cape: Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Masiphumelele and Atlantis. “If menstrual health and hygiene is well managed from the start, it has a surprisingly high potential to contribute to increasing female empowerment at a critical stage of a girl’s life. In one Kenyan study, 95% of menstruating girls missed 1-3 school days, 70% reported a negative impact on their grades, and over 50% stated falling behind in school due to menstruation.” – World Bank DONATE: Drop sanitary products off at our HR department at head office before 26 August.

THE ONYX PENTHOUSE Weylandtstudio’s latest Cape Town project will soon be revealed to the public in an emailer and on our social media, so we’re giving you a first glimpse. It’s bold, and it’s beautiful! Mimicking the dramatic exterior of The Onyx Apartment Hotel, this private two-bedroom penthouse was refreshed by our team with a moody masculine interior. Dark tones and textured linen wallpapers complement a Caesarstone feature wall and specially designed TV unit in black oak. A curved wall clad in a similar slatted oak creates a striking entry point to the apartment – a contrast to the rooftop terrace where natural timber and grey furnishings introduce elements of softness.
VIDEO L AUNCHING AUGUST
W E Y L A N DT S T U D I O transformed The Onyx Penthouse by applying new wall finishes, updating light fittings and window treatments, and designing custom joinery and integrated headboards. A full turnkey solution was created for the bedrooms and bathrooms. Furniture procurement and décor styling was also done by our talented team.

VM MOKORO COMPETITION
N AT U R A L I ST M O KO R O W I N N E R S Congrats to Sonja Fivas and Marius van Rooyen from our Kramerville store for winning the VM Mokoro competition. We loved their beautiful display of plants when rolling out the Naturalist Mokoro installation for our summer revamp. Winners were chosen by a voting panel of head office staff (excluding VM), who voted for their top three installations, based on photos uploaded by each store. Sonja and Marius each received a R500 Weylandts voucher for winning. Lian Louw (Umhlanga) came second.
TEXTURAL HONESTY
S A N D TO N W I N D O W D I S P L AY Always at the forefront of trends, our shop windows continue to inspire beautiful ideas. This window display in our Sandton store is causing many passersby to do a double-take. It’s a very rare thing to have thatch vertically installed on a wall. In fact, European stores have only recently tried it out, and Weylandts is the first store in SA to bring this novel concept to the country. It took contacting 10 different thatching companies before finding one willing to take on this ground-breaking task! It was worth stepping out of the comfort zone. By experimenting with creativity and pushing boundaries, we keep creating new ways of doing things while leading design in South Africa.

HEALTH & SAFETY There’s always a lot going on at our DCs. Especially now, in Cape Town, with the new building under construction. Please pay special attention to safety protocols – for your own safety and for that of those around you. South Africa’s Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 imposes a duty on employers to provide (as far as reasonably possible) a work environment that is safe and free of risk to their employees’ health. This means we need to think beyond simply having guard rails, hard hats and operating procedures. We need to be aware of everything that affects your health and safety. This includes your mental health. We’d love to open discussions around mental health. Let us know how we can make sure that Weylandts listens to, cares for and supports its staff. In what ways can we address mental health in the workplace? Speak to your appointed Health & Safety Officer. The door is always open.
