THE HOME FRONT November Edition 2022

NOVEMBER ISSUE “Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate and make sure you know exactly what it is you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed.” ― Paulo Coelho November is the highest sales target month of the year and in order to deliver on this we all need very clear focus and teamwork. Best of luck to all sales consultants, DC and delivery teams, who face tremendous challenges at this time of the year. Targets are high with massive receiving and delivery volumes of product. The most meaningful way to succeed is to help others succeed. As a team, we need to work together to achieve as a brand and sign this year off as the strongest one yet. Always remember, your focus determines your reality.

S U M M E R STO R E R E VA M P BOLD DESIGN WITH SOUL

We broke the back of our summer revamp 2022 and the stores look beautiful and inspirational. To get to this point requires physical hard work, dedication, long hours, perseverance and sometimes blood, sweat and tears. With a focus on sustainability and longevity, artist Petra Maierhofer reimagined our thatch installations at the entrance to the Green Point, Fourways and Brooklyn stores, by burning into the existing straw. The vision was all Sonja du Plessis’, our Group Visual Merchandiser, who wanted to repurpose the thatch used in the stores’ decor and bring the installation to light – literally. Inspired by the Dutch tradition of vertical thatching, Sonja’s thought process was to use the natural element of thatch and create something never seen in South Africa before. “Groundbreaking,” she reflects. “The epitome of Weylandts.”

Over and above being visually appealing, the natural straw emits a familial scent symbolic of fire-side chatter and holiday nostalgia. This creates a powerful, immersive experience; it’s more than just furniture. We have such an amazing creative team of VMs all over the country. It’s always a pleasure to work with each one individually during the many hours of travel and revamp. The basement team is a key element in pulling off the updates; we could never do it without them. It takes hours of standing on step ladders, hanging lights, measuring walls and spaces, supporting art and caring for very heavy furniture pieces. They work relentlessly hard behind-the-scenes – very few people know what it takes to make Weylandts look so beautiful. And yet they make it look so effortless.

A LETTER FROM INDIA The homeware buying team returned to the IHGF Delhi Fair from 14–18 October for the first time since the outbreak of COVID. Representing the integrity, style and beauty of Indian culture, and celebrating a heritage steeped in history, the fair honours the generations of artisans who have shaped the country’s craftsmanship. It

WHERE NATURE IS AT THE FOREFRONT took four days to traverse the fair, housed at the India Expo Centre in Delhi, and featured a plethora of diverse raw materials and design influences. The fair exhibited over 2,000 new product expressions and more than 300 design developments across 14 product categories; a one-stop sourcing destination for design professionals. Themes of the fair included a profusion of terracotta, ceramics, earthy materials and natural fibres like wool, cotton, hemp and jute. Steering away from loud pops of colour and hard lines, it featured organic shapes and celebrated the beauty of nature. Weylandts has been attending the fair for the last 16+ years. Not only was it stimulating for us to return, but our return was well-received from exhibitors. The level of wares has stepped up since our last trip and the growth in India itself is encouraging. We rekindled existing relationships and found new suppliers to add variance to our range and product selection. You can look forward to seeing new ranges and collections in the new year.

H A P P Y D I WA L I To those who celebrated, a very happy Diwali to you and your family. May the year bring more happiness and prosperity to your life. ABOUT DIWALI Diwali, Dewali, Deepavali, or Divali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a Hindu religious festival and one of the most important festivals within Hinduism. It generally lasts five days, and is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar months of Ashwayuja and Kartika. This year, Diwali fell on October 24.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF OUR LIGHTING SHOOT INSPIRED BY NATURE

Bakoven was home to our new lighting collection, which launched officially on 27 October. The range includes the Atlantis, Core, Hive, Spiral and Peanut pendant lights, all handwoven using wire and natural materials. More than just a light, the collection features conversational works of art, where craftsmanship is celebrated. The day was hot, windy, and the crew had to fight against the elements. The team had hoped for an overcast day but were given bright sunshine – not ideal. The physicality of the rocks also put the team to the test. Bakoven’s rocks evoked texture and depth of field, and the elemental nature of the location highlighted the materiality of the range, enamouring the look, feel and detail of each pendant. We brought their essence to life, using the many textures and grooves of the ocean shore as impetus.
