WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) It is the drawing in which the tridimensional objects in the reality be depicted as two-dimensional figures and by setting these flat figures at a certain angle to show more accurate information of the space and the relations between different objects in the reality. The basic theory of it is just like the space formed in the reality by rotating through in the 3 dimesions. However, as it largely reflects how the space looks like from a distance, so we cannot get the frontality from the axonometric drawings.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) The luxury using of black and white to express the distance and depth. The using of black between the objects creats the extrem contrast which enhance the sense of 3 dimesional space and the blackshaped shadows also implys the depth from where the shadow is cast. The using of white enforce the sense of continuous surface colour and the depth where it appears indicates the different textures by illustrating in different ways.

MARIO’S WORLD

3

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

In my first mario world, I combine the two levels together and add some decorations and the different patterns to the columns, I also add some characters and elements to make it more like a world in the games. Without giving the second level a clearbottom, the water and the extended pillars leading the world to the endless.

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

In this mario world, I focus on enhance the interactions between the objects. So I add the waterfall crossingthrough the cylinders and the rive running through the first floor to the second floor. I put some hidden stairs between the columns to make connnections and emphasise the interactions.

WEEK 4 READING: .AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIES AND OLD ORIGINS FROM PRACTICE: ARCHITECTURE, TECHNIQUE AND REPRESENTATION Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) The perspective could been understood as a special case of the anamorphosis projection. The projection produces the “ correct perspective by facilating the projector aligned to the picture planes. However, the perspective reflects the objects in a certain angle and linked to a fix point of view and by extending the vanishing point, enhance the capacity of the drawing to explicatie the real world space to infinity.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) The Axonometric projection was originated from the ancient visual practice and probably under the military context and used to chart the large military equipment which is not feasible depicted within the parallel projections under many limitations during the war time. The measurability and transimissibility based on the solid scientific and mathematic principles enables the axonometric projection become accurate and handy.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

During the whole process from the flatness to the projection, I engaged in trying different ways to emphasise the 3-D percept of the mario world. First,I add many triangles in the top of the volumes and colour them by the gradients which creats a sort of low poly sense and improve the 3D effect. Second, By adjusting the scales of the objects and the distance between them to show the objects in the different heights . Then, I add clouds, hidden stairs, floating steps, rivers and waterfalls to enhance the interaction between the two floors and create connections between the objects which are seperately arranged. To balance the blank space and further enrich the theme of my Mario world, I add many liquid bubbles out of the projections, which seems from somewhere out of the paper, to increase the 3D feeling of the whole mario world.
