Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day Ceremonies Lest we forget... f On November 11 Canadians wear poppies and gather at war memorials across Canada to pay tribute to those who died in war. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the time the Armistice of World War I was signed in 1918, we observe two minutes of silence to remember. On Friday, November 11…… In Pitt Meadows the Parade marches to the Cenotaph at Spirit Square. Sandi Wight will be Master of Ceremonies for the Ceremony there at 11am. In Maple Ridge, at 10:30 am, the parade leaves the Legion on 224th Street and heads south into downtown, ending at the cenotaph in Memorial Peace Park. Official ceremonies begin at 11:00 am. Master of Ceremonies for this event is Margaret Kury. Once the Parade arrives at each cenotaph, the national anthem is sung, followed by: a Remembrance Blessing; role call of soldiers from the community who died in action; playing of the Last Post; a two minute moment of silence; Lament and Rouse; Laying of Wreaths (from organizations or individuals in the communities); reading of In Flanders Fields, and, closing with God Save The Queen. In Maple Ridge, the Parade then returns via the ring road and 224th Street, to the Legion, marching past the Reviewing Stand, where they take the Salute. Please join the Legion to honour the men and women who so bravely served and continue to serve our community.

In Flanders field, the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly l Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from falling hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields

RIDGE MEADOWS Lately, local news and conversations have focused on homelessness, shelters and how to balance these issues in our growing community. Help-Portrait Ridge Meadows organizers hope to help by offering some positive, seasonal cheer in hosting the 6th annual Help-Portrait event on Saturday, December 3 at Golden Ears United Church from 1 to 8 PM. Help-Portrait is a positive professional photography experience for those who can’t afford personal, family or school photos. Guests of the event include: the homeless, those recovering from addiction, as well as low-income and single parent families and seniors. In fact, 80% of participants are families grateful to record their memories in photo. Help-Portrait is an annual, worldwide, one-day event at 2,800 locations in 67 countries. More than 370,000 portraits have been gifted globally, with the help of photographers, editors, hairstylists, makeup artists and other volunteers. There is no cost to guests, no pre-registration nor pre-qualification. Guests receive free mini makeovers, a professional sitting and a framed portrait. There is also a kid’s entertainment station, live music and refreshments for guests.

HOW YOU CAN HELP Organizers are seeking volunteers - especially hair and makeup professionals. Check out www.helpportraitridgemeadows. com for ways to help. Donations are also gratefully accepted. This year a portion of funds raised will be donated to Alouette Addictions Services for Community and School Education programs to educate families and children to help circumvent poverty and addiction. Donations can be made through smile@helpportraitridgemeadows.com or online at www.helpportraitridgemeadows. com. DID YOU KNOW… • Over 70% of people that use the meal service at the local Salvation Army are NOT homeless or living in a shelter? • We have 186 children in our community that use the bagged lunch program? • Approximately 14% of our community residents live at or below the poverty line?

Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society www.mrpmchristmashamper.org

Families In Need If you think your family will be in need this Christmas Season please register for a Hamper at one of the following events. Each registration event runs from 10am to 2pm.

November 24 at Pitt Meadows Lions Hall, 12479 Harris Road November 27, December 7, 11, or 14 at the Commercial Building at Maple Ridge Fairgrounds, 23448 105th Ave November 29 at the Hilton Hader Room, in the Randy Herman Building, 11960 Haney Place, Maple Ridge

Drop off Gifts The Kids Only Gift Shoppe is desperate for items suitable for adult Christmas Gifts. On December 17th, this is where the children have the opportunity to shop for a FREE gift for the mum, dad or caregiver. For both the Kids Only Shoppe and for Rudolph’s Recycle Shoppe, drop off is open to the public from November 17 to December 15, between 10am and 4pm each day. We accept used toys, household items, clothing for all ages, and warm blankets. We are always in desperate need for teen gifts. Often teen gifts are not on people’s minds when they think about Christmas. We have hundreds of teens in

our registered families and believe they deserve to be part of the family gift opening. Fuzzy blankets, sports items, hair straighteners/curling irons, teens crafts and gift cards (movie theatres, music stores, local malls and clothing stores are the most requested items). New, unwrapped toys can be dropped in our donation boxes (look for our Santa Hat logo on the box!) at Valleyfair Mall, Haney Place Mall, the Christmas Hamper office at Maple Ridge Fairgrounds and the Maple Ridge News office, all in Maple Ridge. Also at Otter Co-op in Pitt Meadows.

Please Help Financially 12

PLEASE HELP, however you can, to give financially disadvantaged families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows a wonderful Christmas.

Cash donations can be made at the Christmas Hamper office, at Otter Co-op, or via the PayPal link at www.mrpmchristmashamper.org

MEET

the Maple Ridge Museum & Community Archives and Haney House Museum! Displays ranging from Katzie First Nation, to early European settlers to industrial and railway history, to household items: the museum has over 15,000 objects in its collection and 16,000 archival photographs, all of which are donations from the community. Besides our permanent display areas, the museum also has a temporary gallery that rotates exhibits twice a year. The goal of the space is to highlight parts of our collection that do not necessarily fit into the exhibits currently on display. The space is also used to showcase traveling exhibitions from neighbouring museums. The Museum routinely provides text and photo displays for a number of community events and in the public library, averaging about 30 outreach displays a year. We take part in as many community events as well, from Canada Day to Rivers Day, to Haney Farmers Market.

Situated in Jim Hadgkiss Park overlooking the Fraser River, the Maple Ridge Museum collects, preserves and shares the material culture and stories of historic Maple Ridge. 16

In addition to showcasing history through artefacts and display work, the museum is also an archive and we handle many research requests. We hold extensive research files more than 1,200 distinct topics on community history. There are two copies — a digital one at the museum and a hard copy at the Maple Ridge Library. People interested in browsing community history or investigating a number of topics are advised to access the library set as the library is open more hours than the museum and there is plenty of work space. If you have a specific topic in mind or cannot access the library, contact us for digital copies.

subject and location as browsing 16,000 images is not recommended. More than a thousand of the best images can be found on our Flickr site. While both the Maple Ridge Museum and Haney House Museum are located in former homes, unlike the brickyard manager’s house, Haney House still looks like a family home inside. The main floor has the kitchen, living room, and dining room, while upstairs there are bedrooms and bathrooms. Haney House is not confined to a single era and tells the story of the family and their home as both evolved through time. Plumbing, electrification and family composition all brought changes that left their mark on the house. In addition, stories and artefacts are drawn from the Maple Ridge Museum collections to explore particular themes or show seasonal variation. We encourage visitors young and old to come and learn about the history of their community. Please contact us below for more information! Access to original archives can be provided for specific requests but given our lack of space, we cannot provide public access for browsing. We request that researchers define the scope of their interest by era,

se Ridge Meadows have in common?

We offer an authentic Montessori environment with trained Montessori teachers. From our observations, we are able to follow the child and determine their needs. Maria Montessori stated, “Follow the child, but follow the child as his leader.” We provide the opportunities to learn, grow, and develop in a safe and carefully prepared environment. The environment is created with the child in mind, considering both his current development and his future needs. We respect the child and his natural progression, honouring his spirit and independence. Within the child lies the fate of the future. Maria Montessori
