Go All Out for Colour • Update any room instantly with some vivid wall art. There is a huge choice available both in the high street and online, including very affordable printable art that you simply download and print out yourself. Alternatively, you might even want to make some art of your own: buy blank canvases from an art shop and choose co-ordinating tester pots of paint for some modern abstract originals. • Accessories such as throws, cushions, vases, plant pots or lamp bases can make all the difference, even in a relatively neutral room, adding colour to liven up your day. Group small items together for greater impact, and don’t worry too much about conventional good taste – a few clashing colours can be exciting and uplifting. • The floor is one of the largest visible areas in any room, so a new rug will have a dramatic impact and can completely change the look and feel of the space. A flat-woven rug in a single block or colour, wide stripes or a geometric pattern is a great choice. • If you are feeling particularly bold, consider repainting wooden furniture, such as chairs, wardrobes, chests of drawers or even kitchen cabinets. To do the job properly, remove handles, knobs or other hardware first, sand down thoroughly and prime before painting. Use a mini foam roller on any large, flat surfaces for a perfectly flat finish.

E NEO3C Electric Stove: £1,135, www.acrstoves.com
Even though 95% of UK homes are centrallyheated and a fire isn’t necessary, there is something mesmerising and cosy about a flickering flame. An open fire or a wood burner will give the best aesthetic, but both options come with a number of downsides: wood-burning is the single biggest source of small-particle air pollution in the UK, you need to store wood and coal, there’s the mess and you will need to do a certain amount of maintenance e.g. chimney sweeping. Modern technology to the rescue then! Traditional If you have a fireplace and chimney breast, the fire surround is going to be an important feature in your room. This should reflect the style of your house, with Victorian and Georgian styles best suited to homes from that period, and less fussy contemporary styles better in more recently built homes. 8
www.MyHomeMagazine.co.uk
There are many homes with Deco Fireplace: £1,395, chimneys in www.haddonstone.com the UK so the corresponding large number of fireplace buyers means there’s a plethora of options. You can certainly gain inspiration from looking at choices on the internet, but for such a prominent feature in your living room, a visit to a fireplace retailer is a must. For the fire itself, both gas and electric options are available to replicate the real fire look and many are incredibly realistic, with some even making crackling sounds and emitting steam to replicate smoke.
Modern The beauty of modern electric fires is that you don’t have to have a chimney at all. They don’t create any emissions and therefore do not need to be vented like gas and wood fireplaces.
Home & Gardens
Look, No Walls One further idea is to move your fire away from the wall completely. With a bioethanol option you won’t need an electric connection, so you can have flames on your coffee table or in a corner of the garden, and even have more than one.
These modern designs aren’t intended to pass for a real fire at all and many are sleek and minimalist. It’ll be very obvious that you haven’t been piling up logs and coal, but you will still have a similar ambience and they are very effective. Particularly in well-insulated modern homes, a real fire can overheat the room and it’s only the flame that you want. A further benefit has to be the safety aspect. If the flame is just an effect and isn’t emitting significant heat, there are no concerns about young children touching the fire or a spark setting the carpet alight.
Mix 850 Bioethanol Fire Pit: £,1495, www.limelace.co.uk
Media Walls Media walls are very ‘on-trend’. This is where you have a television and speakers installed above an electric fire. One advantage of this design is that you will just have one focal point in the room. If you are very cost-conscious you can buy predesigned media walls, but if you have one built for your room you will then have complete freedom in the size of TV and style of fire you can install.

If your kitchen is feeling bland and boring, there are plenty of ways to add colour, whether you’re planning a major renovation or just want a quick fix. Kitchen cupboards and appliances Add colour with glossy, flat-fronted modern units or commission a traditional painted kitchen in any paint colour under the sun. Alternatively, just specify a coloured island unit combined with plain cupboards elsewhere. If replacing freestanding appliances, consider less usual colours – ice cream-coloured retro fridges, for example, or an Aga in a jewel-bright enamel. This look is best teamed with neutrals in other areas of the room so as not to overwhelm. Worktops and splashbacks Teamed with understated kitchen cupboards, a colourful worktop or splashback can give a welcome lift. Sleek toughened glass can be painted on the back in a range of shades with some showrooms offering a colour-matching service at extra cost. Others options include a dramatic shade of natural stone, stone composites (often called quartz), man-made solid surfaces (such as Corian), and laminates (generally the least expensive option), all in a range of interesting shades.
A vividly coloured seating area and a painted island unit add colour to this otherwise neutral space. Twickenham Framed Handleless Shaker kitchen, Higham Furniture: 020 73810 488; higham.co.uk.

Painting free-standing furniture is a quick and cost-effective way to change your colour scheme. These pieces are by The Painted Furniture Company: 01285 656 041; paintedfurnitureco.co.uk.
Walls and floors A simple way to add oomph is to paint a wall or two in a strong colour, or replace wall tiles – choose dramatic colours for impact even over a relatively small area. Another cheap trick is to use plain white tiles with brightly coloured grout (lemon yellow and sky blue are great). One way to add instant colour for flooring is with a small, washable rug with an underlay to stop it slipping. If it’s a complete renovation, vinyl and rubber flooring is available in many colourways, while poured floors – polished concrete or resin – can be dyed in any colour.

Free-standing furniture Painting wooden furniture is straightforward but needs preparation – sanding, cleaning and priming – and a steady hand for painting. It can make a phenomenal difference, especially with a change of knobs, handles, hinges and other hardware. Window treatments and soft furnishings Roller blinds are practical and inexpensive where humidity and splashes are inevitable; alternatively, wooden shutters can be bright and breezy. Add colour to seating areas in the form of upholstery, fabric-covered chair seats or scatter cushions. Finishing touches Create colourful displays in glass-fronted cabinets or on shelving, perhaps cookbooks arranged in a rainbow or some vintage glassware. Add colourful pendant shades over a kitchen island or dining table, or accessories such as bread bins, canisters, knife blocks, cupboard handles, plant pots, wall art or flowers to bring more colour into the heart of your home.
A stylish chevron splashback introduces a dose of blue to this minimal white kitchen. Savanna Petrol gloss wall tiles, £39.96 per square metre, The London Tile Company: 0333 320 8048; londontile.co.uk.

When we treat ourselves, it tends to be a luxurious body lotion or expensive perfume that falls into the shopping basket. But don’t forget those daily essentials. Shower gel might not seem exactly luxurious, but it can be. Look for one with added benefits, such as moisturising ingredients or just a fragrance that makes you smile. Weleda’s (www.weleda.co.uk) new Aroma Showers range is a good place to start. There are several fragrances to choose from, at £8.25 each. Each one is designed to enhance your mood and turn your daily shower into a ‘spa-worthy’ experience. As an added bonus, the body wash is very rich and creamy, so leaves skin feeling softer. Make that shower even better by trying a new shampoo and conditioner. Eco-brand Rhyme and Reason packs in plenty of natural, nourishing ingredients into its haircare range, from coconut oil to shea butter. There are five combos to choose from – Volume & Boost, Nourish & Gloss, Quench & Curl, Colour Protect and Repair & Restore – at £8.99 each from www.boots.co.uk. Personally, I like the Nourish & Gloss Shampoo and Conditioner as they help to detangle, smooth and add shine. Sales of lipstick plummeted during the pandemic. There’s little point applying lipstick when it’s covered up by a face mask. Now that restrictions are easing, a slick of lippie might help to put a spring back in your step. Your prepandemic ones will most likely need binning as they usually have a shelf-life of six to twelve
months. Ideally, head to a make-up counter to choose a new lippie, as the colours are never 100% accurate on a screen. My new go-to neutral is Bobbi Brown’s Crushed Shine Jelly Stick in Honey. It contains fruit oils and hyaluronic acid to help soften and hydrate lips and the colour is perfect for everyday use. Looking for something with a bit more wow factor? Try Papaya or Candy Apple. They’re £25 from www.bobbibrown.co.uk. Speaking of make-up counters, why not treat yourself to a mini-makeover or make-up tutorial? Lots of brands offer them for free, or for a fee that’s redeemable against new products. Some beauty counters offer walk-in consultations, but full make-up lessons usually need booking online or over the phone. Sleep shouldn’t be a luxury, but it sure feels that way sometimes. If you’re struggling to drift off, try unwinding with the Luna Eye Mask from Sensory Retreats (£3.95, www.sensoryretreats.com). It’s self-heating (which feels surprisingly comforting) and infused with lavender to help you de-stress and relax. Of course, you don’t need to buy anything new to add a dash of luxury to your daily routine. Many of us have shelves of products we hardly ever use. Why shouldn’t you wear your favourite perfume on the school run? Or massage in that scented body oil straight before bed? And you could take your evening bath to another level by lighting a scented candle, putting some music on and pouring yourself a glass of wine. Bliss.

According to a growing number of experts, sitting is the latest health hazard to look out for. But why is a sedentary lifestyle so bad for us, and what can we do about it? Since the first lockdown struck back in 2020, many of us might have noticed that we’re sitting down more than ever before. Working from home, online shopping, cancelled plans and periods of self-isolation all mean we’re spending more time at our desks and sofas and less time moving our bodies. Unfortunately, this change of lifestyle comes at a cost. Evidence suggests that even if we exercise regularly, spending long periods of time sitting down can expose us to a range of health issues, from backache and varicose veins to diabetes. The reason? Humans were built to stand. The heart, cardiovascular system and bowel function far more efficiently when we’re upright. What’s more, moving our muscles helps the body digest fats and sugars in our diet, keeping our weight down – and that’s just touching the surface. Sitting for too long has been linked to everything from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) to cancer. Now, of course this isn’t great news for the thousands of us that have desk-based jobs – but 14
www.MyHomeMagazine.co.uk
don’t lose hope just yet. There are lots of things you can do to help. To make life easier, we’ve done the research for you and weighed up the pros and cons of each. Invest in a standing desk If you work in an office or from home, it’s likely that you’ll spend between six to eight hours a day sitting down at a desk. So naturally, one of the easiest ways to reduce your sitting time is to invest in a standing version. Adjustable desks have become hugely popular in recent years, with IKEA boasting a fantastic range of stylish sit-stand desks. The downside? There’s evidence to suggest that standing still for long periods of time isn’t hugely beneficial to our bodies either, and has been linked to sore feet, lower back pain and various other health problems. However, standing is certainly better for us than sitting. It’s all about balance. Start by standing for 30 to 60 minutes a day and gradually increase until you’re alternating between standing and sitting every hour. Trust us, your body will thank you for it!

Take regular breaks It can be hard to motivate yourself to leave your desk during the working day, especially when you’re busy. However, taking regular breaks – even if it’s just to grab a cuppa or take the laundry out – can make a world of difference. In the office and need to send an email? Get away from your desk and relay the message in person. Working from home and fancy a coffee? Treat yourself by taking a walk to your local cafe. And on days when you’re simply too busy to take a lunch break, set a timer to remind you to stand up, stretch or have a little walk around. Sit the right way Not all types of sitting were created equal. If you’re spending much of your working life at a desk, it’s important to invest in a decent office chair that will help you perfect your posture. When looking for a chair, choose one with lumbar support that ensures your lower back curves to the shape of the chair, and make sure it’s adjusted so your feet are resting on the floor and your screen is at eye level. You should also avoid crossing your legs and try to keep your back straight against your chair as much as you can. Doing so will make the hours you do spend sitting as comfortable as possible.
Get some exercise We all know that exercise is good for us. But it’s even more important for those of us who lead sedentary lifestyles. Evidence suggests that we need between 60-75 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per day to combat the dangers of excessive sitting – but the more frequent the better. You’ll be glad to hear that this doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym every day. Moderate exercise could be a brisk walk on your lunch break, a light bike ride or even those slightly more exerting cleaning duties, such as vacuuming, window cleaning or mopping the floor.

From pocket money treats to push-the-boat-out presents, we’ve got plenty of ideas for Father’s Day gifts… Whether your father is an avid runner or needs some encouragement to get off the couch, a Garmin Forerunner 35 might give him extra motivation. It’s £129.99 from www.very.co.uk.
If dad is hoping to indulge his travel lust a bit more this year, this T-shirt should whet his appetite. And it’s just £8 from Tu.
A handcrafted, refillable pen will last for years. If you’re on a budget, try the Wood Wirkshop, which offers a range of wooden and acrylic styles from just £12. See www.facebook.com/TheWoodWirkshop.
You can’t beat a homemade gift. If you’re stuck for ideas, why not try making a: Bath fizzer Wearing gloves, mix 100g of bicarbonate of soda, 50g of citric acid and 25g of cornflour. Keep stirring as you pour in two tablespoons of olive oil and around ten drops of essential oil. Mix in a few drops of water. You only need enough water to hold the dry ingredients together. Press the mixture into silicone moulds or ice cube trays and allow it to dry for at least two hours.
Dad will love a weekend relaxing in a hammock, available for £75 from Habitat. It’s easy to pick up chocolate from the supermarket, but a personalised bar is so much more special. These luxury handmade chocolates cost £3.50 to £15 from www.cocoas.co.uk.
How about a hand-sewn notebook made from recycled paper from www.brucebramfield.com and priced from just £3.95? Even better, it can be personalised with your dad’s name or a short message for free.
Bird box This takes a bit more work, but can be achieved with a plank of wood, a hammer, drill and some nails. Search online for templates. Mini herb garden If dad loves cooking, you could create a mini herb garden in a pot with plug plants from your local garden centre. Chocolates Chop a couple of large bars into chunks and melt them in a large bowl over a pan of simmering water. Spoon the chocolate into silicone moulds, adding chopped nuts or sprinkles first. Your cat’s regular supplier of food and affection has been more readily available this year, so they may not have been going out as much as they used to. Now restrictions are ending for you, feline freedom is in sight too, so check what you can do to keep them safe. Night-time curfew: Your cat has fantastic vision in low-light conditions, but faced with sudden bright light such as car headlights, they’ll freeze on the spot while their eyes adjust, with the inevitable consequences. Hello, I’m…: A collar is essential, although make sure it’s a quick release one in the event that they snag themselves on a branch or other object. But should the collar go missing, a microchip ensures a vet can reunite you with your pet. No Naughties: The mating instinct in unneutered cats cannot be curbed or controlled, and often male cats will wander off for days at a time in search of a female. Cat SPF: A cat’s skin is at risk of sunburn, more so if their fur, ears or nose are white. Sun cream will help but make sure it’s specifically formulated for cats, as their regular grooming means they are likely to be ingesting some of it. Smile: Take clear, identifiable photos of your cat so that if they do go missing you are able to post the pictures up to your neighbourhood Facebook groups.

June brings an abundance of colourful fruits and contrasts with a glut of green leaves and vegetables.
Cucumber Crisp and cool, cucumber is a lovely addition to salad and, when thinly sliced, in sandwiches. Of course, as one of the ingredients in a glass of Pimm’s, it’s a must. Courgettes A wonderfully versatile and inexpensive vegetable, courgettes are great in soup, spiralised as a spaghetti substitute, fried and even added as an ingredient to make a moist cake. Courgettes are a source of potassium, which helps to keep our muscles working properly.
Strawberries The best month of the year for British strawberries and we should make the most of them. They are delicious eaten just as they are, of course, but are often served with a dollop of clotted cream, in a trifle or even thinly sliced and sprinkled over a salad.
Broad Beans Broad beans are actually a legume and are a great source of protein and carbohydrates as well as vitamins A, B1 and B2. After cooking they can be eaten with any meal but are also delicious when cooled and served with a vinaigrette dressing alongside a salad. Tomatoes Strictly speaking a fruit but always eaten with savoury dishes. We eat them all year round these days, but the locally grown crops in June are extra sweet. They are full of vitamins and cooking releases even more of the goodness. Lettuce, Rocket and Watercress As the weather heats up and we replace roast dinners with barbecues, these fresh and nutritious salad leaves come into their own. More than just something that’s a side to the main meal, there are many recipes that mix these vegetables with other ingredients to make a meal in its own right. Blackcurrants & Gooseberries Neither of these fruits would be eaten in their raw format as they are sour, but they really come into their own in sweet recipes such as blackcurrant cheesecake or gooseberry fool. Cooked in a crumble or a tart and served with cream or ice cream, they are superb. Both are excellent sources of vitamin C too. To Advertise Email info@MyHomeMagazine.co.uk • Call 07516-463666

Our recommendations for making fantastic flat whites and excellent espresso Coffee machines typically come in three different flavours. The simplest and most affordable machines are filter coffee makers, which you load with ground coffee and wait for the hot water to pass through it and into the jug below. Then there are capsule coffee machines, into which you insert single-cup capsules that can make anything from speciality coffees to hot chocolate. And finally, at the more expensive end of the market there are bean-to-cup machines, which you fill with beans that they grind before passing hot water over them. Bean-to-cup machines make brilliant coffee (depending of course on the beans you use), but while it’s possible to get a miniature beanto-cup machine for about £40 the good ones start at around £250 and continue well past the £1,000 mark, with machines at the high end featuring extremely high water pressure, artificial intelligence, tablet-style displays and more coffee options than you could possibly drink in a lifetime. Some also include milk frothers for creamy cappuccinos and flat whites. If you’re serious about coffee but don’t want to spend serious money, both Dolce Gusto and Nespresso coffee machines are very affordable – around £35 to £90 at the time of
Aeropress Unlike the other coffee machines here, the Aeropress has no electric or electronic parts: it does its magic by air pressure. Simply fill it with coffee and hot water, wait a bit and then plunge for perfect coffee. £29.99, aeropress.co.uk
Delonghi Magnifica ESAM4200 We’ll admit bias here: we’re on our second Magnifica and they’re magnificent bean-to-cup machines. They’re quite noisy but the results are worth a few seconds of grinding and wheezing, and they’re particularly great with famous Italian coffee brands. £349, delonghi.com
writing – and the pods come in at around 50p each for Nespresso and 20p each for Dolce Gusto. Although the machines themselves are very simple, the available pods cover every conceivable kind of coffee, enabling you to make whatever you like without any fuss whatsoever. Last but not least there are the familiar filter coffee makers, with prices starting below £25 and rising to about £200 for prestigious brands such as Smeg. Although most such coffee makers have a keep-warm function, we’d recommend turning them off when they’re not in use: we’ve burnt through many filter coffee makers whose heating elements failed after just a few months of fairly intensive use. In addition to all of these machines there’s another option: the Aeropress. This £30 coffee maker is similar to but faster and easier to clean than a French press: simply combine water and ground coffee, let it sit for a bit and then press the plunger down to deliver a smooth and mellow drink.
Jura E6 Platinum Jura’s coffee machines are incredibly impressive. The E6 is packed with cutting-edge coffee technology that makes it really easy to use. It has eleven different specialities and there’s an intelligent water filter for perfect taste. £599, hartsofstur.com
Nescafe Dolce Gusto Mini Me If even a Nespresso machine is too big, this tiny machine packs a seriously caffeinated punch thanks to its Dolce Gusto pods, which are even more affordable than Nespresso ones. £56, Amazon UK
Nespresso Vertuo Plus If you want high-end coffee without the high-end price tag, Nespresso machines are much more affordable and make it easy to get excellent coffee every time. £199, nespresso.com

Stories of bravery, determination and resilience… Nightcrawling – Leila Mottley 17-year-old Kiara’s mother is in prison and her brother looks set to follow. When their landlord puts the rent up, it’s down to Kiara to find the extra money. With no qualifications or work experience to her name, she has little choice other than prostitution. And when she’s picked up by the police, things look even bleaker. A harrowing book, but one with glimpses of light and hope, Nightcrawling is a masterpiece. Bravely Being Me – Sam Langley-Swain, Nicci Martin Bravely Being Me celebrates the stories of people who have been adopted, including chef Lorraine Pascale, presenter Toby Anstis and comedian Dara Ó Briain. It’s aimed at children who have been adopted and each story is beautifully illustrated. Bravely Being Me is only available from www. adoptionuk.org and all proceeds help to support the Adoption UK charity. The Return of Faraz Ali – Aamina Ahmad As a small boy, Faraz was ripped from his home in Lahore’s red-light district. Many years later, he’s sent back to cover up the murder of a young girl. Corruption is rife and the life of a prostitute is seen as having little value, but Faraz can’t bring himself to obey orders. Meanwhile, Faraz’s sister is trying to escape their birthplace with her young daughter before it’s too late. An epic, historically rich story that will sweep you away. The Girl with the Louding Voice – Abi Daré Fourteen-year-old Adunni dreams of going back to school. But her father has other ideas – selling her as a third wife to a local man in his fifties. Adunni flees her small Nigerian village but with no money and no protection, her future looks uncertain. The Girl with the Louding Voice is lyrically beautiful and one of those rare books that will haunt your thoughts for weeks after you’ve turned the last page. Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? – Dr Julie Smith Clinical psychologist Dr Julie Smith has created a handbook packed with straightforward advice to build resilience. She shares simple tools to help you cope with whatever life throws your way. From dealing with criticism to battling anxiety and overcoming a lack of motivation, these are skills that anyone can benefit from. On Bloody Sunday – Julieann Campbell Fourteen people were killed by the Bloody Sunday massacre, half of whom were teenagers. All were unarmed. Most of the people who were shot were running away or helping other victims. Campbell’s On Bloody Sunday includes 110 first-hand accounts of the atrocity, from witnesses, survivors and relatives. It examines both the lead-up to the tragedy and the longfought campaign for justice. By Kate Duggan

Phrases come and phrases go and ‘cancel culture’ is one of the current expressions thst tends to arouse passion. Within the gardening community we prefer to think in terms of ‘subtraction satisfaction’. What is this and how can it help improve mental health (another well-used phrase that uses loaded language)? 28
www.MyHomeMagazine.co.uk
Home & Garden take time to check the most effective method for each species. In the case of forsythia, for example, best results are achieved by taking out some of the older stems, right down to the ground. This thins the shrub whilst still allowing it to adopt its natural form. What you don’t want is a ‘mechanical massacre’ whereby everything is rounded into a blob. Take a walk around your local modern housing estate to see it! Abelia, choisya, helichrysum and chaenomeles can also be pruned now.
Simply put, most of us need to do less. Many people seem to have too much going on. The digital age and our comparatively luxurious lifestyles mean there are multiple demands on our time. There’s always another gadget to buy, ‘life-enhancing’ changes to make to the home or that ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ holiday to save for (these things always happen more than once). We work more in order to play more and often give in to peer pressure urging us to join in with a greater number of things. This lifestyle suits a wide range of people, but very rarely is it perfect for gardening folk. So, this wonderful time in spring is the very best time to make space for gardening. Subtracting commitments from the diary will help you to do it. Gardening cannot be rushed! A garden is a healing, nurturing place where mental health is soothed and the soul is fed with contentment. Tend to your green carpet in glorious spring This is the month of plenty, so it’s vital to allow yourself time to enjoy it. Garden tasks can feel overwhelming because everything is growing so fast. Prioritise the lawn, if you have one, because it will provide a visual feature during the months to come. Cut and reshape the edges, it’s amazing what a difference this makes. Gradually lower the cutting blade each mowing time, aiming for grass length of around 6cm – don’t be tempted to take it too low. Most importantly, leave some patches of longer grass for wildlife. At least one square metre is recommended. Joyful garden tasks for late spring The long days mean that summer is almost here and early spring growth in the garden can be tidied up to make way for the glorious summer show. Spring-flowering shrubs often benefit from being pruned back to healthy buds, but
Climbers such as clematis need you to be wise. Some of them can have a light clip at this time of year, but not those that are about to flower! The easy-to-remember advice “if it flowers before June, don’t prune” will tell you what type of pruning group your clematis falls into. The early-flowering clematis only need a very light clip after flowering, whereas those that flower after June will mostly benefit from a harder prune next February. This will encourage the plant to produce flowers all the way down the stems rather than purely on the newer top growth. Celebrate the season by planting out your annuals towards the end of the month, when all danger of frost has passed. Hanging baskets and bedding will provide vibrant colour and interest right through until October. Jobs in the kitchen garden • If you are growing strawberries, lay straw between the plants and the soil. It will lessen the chance of mould spoiling the crop and will keep those luscious red fruits clean, too. • Did you know that you can achieve greater yields from your vegetable beds if you plant in triangles rather than rows or squares? Stagger your plants, but don’t plant too closely. The crop is far better when there’s a bit more space in between. • It’s time to make supports for runner beans. Allow about 2.5m of height and plant just one bean per support. These can go in the ground at the end of the month. • Chit and plant potatoes, if you haven’t done so already. They like soft, crumbly soil. Always avoid planting them in boggy sites. • Get weeds under control this month and it will make the rest of the growing season much easier. Hoe when the weather is dry, as this stops weeds in their tracks.

If you’re looking for a fun way to get fit, why not try martial arts? You’ll improve your coordination and flexibility, it’s a great way to meet people, and it can really boost your confidence. And you’re never too old to learn. Many clubs offer adult or mixed classes. Which martial art to choose There are several types of martial art to choose from. It’s worth finding out a bit more about all the different ones that are offered in your local area. Are you mainly looking for a way to keep fit or do you want to learn self-defence? Do you want to take part in competitions? Do you want to learn to fight with weapon such as swords or sticks, or would you rather focus on unarmed combat? Clubs usually offer taster sessions for free or at a reduced rate, so you could try a few types to see which one most appeals. How to learn You’ll want to join a club that’s registered with a governing body, such as the Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain or The British Karate Association. Make sure that the club is fully insured and check the senior instructor’s credentials. If you’re hoping to compete, you may want to choose a larger club that has been successful in tournaments. If you’re just looking for a fun activity, you might prefer a smaller club with a family atmosphere. It’s worth asking for recommendations on social media and within your friendship group. What you’ll need For most martial arts, you’ll need to buy an outfit, such as a dobok (tae kwon-do) or gi (karate,
judo, aikido, and jiujitsu). However, clubs will usually let you wear normal sports clothes for your first few sessions. It’s a good idea to wait to buy the outfit until you’ve spoken to your instructor, as they may need you to wear a uniform that’s branded with the club logo or that’s been approved by their parent association. Branded outfits tend to cost around £30 to £40, but non-branded gis are often a lot cheaper. You can also pick up second-hand outfits on eBay and dedicated Facebook selling groups. As you progress, you may need more equipment, such as a sparring kit. Again, these can often be picked up second-hand. How much it costs Costs vary depending on the type of martial art. You’ll likely need to pay an annual membership fee of £20 to £40, plus a monthly payment for classes. Some clubs do offer a ‘pay as you go’ membership, however. Gradings (where you move onto the next level or belt) cost extra, as do tournaments. If you’re worried about the cost, the best thing to do is speak to the club’s senior instructor. They’ll be able to give you a good idea of how much you can expect to spend over the year.

If you’re craving sandy beaches and coastal scenery, but aren’t pinning much hope on travelling abroad this summer, the Welsh county of Pembrokeshire could be the staycation you’re searching for. Nestled into the tip of Wales’ most westerly point, Pembrokeshire’s dramatic cliff faces, horseshoe bays and sandy beaches could fool you into thinking you travelled abroad after all. The county’s coastline is so beautiful, in fact, that it’s a national park in its own right. Then there are its Celtic and pre-Celtic sites, stunning castles and offshore islands, not to mention Britain’s smallest – and probably most charming – city. Whether you’re a rambler, birdwatcher or historian, or simply want to feel the sand between your toes, Pembrokeshire has something for everyone. And to top it off, it’s no more than half a day’s drive from much of the South-East and Midlands, and is easily accessible by train too. Before you get packing, check out these top things to do during your stay. Spend a day in St Davids The tiny city of St Davids is really no bigger than a village, but is full to the brim with history, religious significance and Welsh charm. Its star attraction is the twelfth century cathedral, which is also the birthplace and burial site of Wales’ patron saint, St David. A pilgrimage site for centuries, the cathedral still draws in thousands of religious and non-religious visitors each year. After a tour of the cathedral, pay a visit to the medieval ruins of Bishop’s Palace on the 34

opposite side of the river. And don’t leave without stopping for ice cream or coffee in one of the city’s cosy little eateries! Walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path 186 glorious miles of sheer coastal beauty, Pembrokeshire Coast Path is one of the most spectacular long-distance trails in Britain. Established in 1970, the path runs from Amroth in the south all the way to St Dogmaels in the north. Serious hikers take on the whole trail over two or three weeks, but you only have to walk a small section to get a taste of the coastline’s sublime scenery. Drink in Pembrokeshire’s dramatic cliff tops and stunning ocean views, looking out for rare birds, and stop for a rest on one of the gloriously wide, sandy beaches that are peppered across the trail Hop from beach to beach If you miss collapsing onto a soft, sandy beach, Pembrokeshire could be the answer. The beaches here are renowned for being some of the best in the UK. And with 50 to choose from, you’re spoilt for choice. Barafundle Bay is a must-visit – a pocket of semi-tropical paradise on Pembrokeshire’s south coast. Home to the magnificent North and South beaches, Castle Beach and Harbour Beach, the seaside town of Tenby is also a fantastic place to stay if you’re a fan of sea and sand.

Then there are the water sports. Adventure companies have been cropping up all over the peninsular, giving visitors the chance to try water skiing, sailing, surfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and coasteering. Born and bred on these very shores, coasteering is a Pembrokeshire speciality. Try this thrill-seeking combination of adventure swimming, rock climbing and cliff jumping to get up close and personal with Pembrokeshire’s wonderful wildlife. Visit a Celtic village If you’ve ever wondered how things might have looked thousands of years ago, Pembrokeshire’s very own Iron Age settlement can paint a pretty accurate picture. Evidence of numerous Iron Age roundhouses has been excavated at the treasured historical site of Castell Henllys, dating back to between 500 and 100 BC. The Celtic village has now been reconstructed for visitors to experience. Take a tour of the four roundhouses and old granary, and stroll across the site’s beautiful woodland and riverside paths, learning about Celtic life, myths and legends.

Take a boat to Pembrokeshire’s islands Pembrokeshire’s rocky offshore islands are known for their rich and diverse wildlife, with puffins, grey seals and thousands of rare birds all calling the islands home. Skomer and Skockholm are by far the most visited. Take a boat trip there during nesting season to sight millions of seabirds, including razorbills, puffins, storm petrels and guillemots, and stay overnight to witness the islands at their most peaceful. For many people, long-distance driving is a common occurrence. Be that for work or personal reasons, sometimes doing big miles is a part of daily life – and a car that’ll conquer big trips without breaking a sweat can make a real difference. So here, we’re going to be looking at the cars that’ll take the backache out of long-distance journeys.
Peugeot 3008 Peugeot, much like Citroen, has many years’ worth of experience when it comes to creating cars that are comfortable over long distances. The new 3008 is no different, with well-sorted suspension combined with comfortable chairs in one refined package. Many drivers will appreciate the somewhat raised-up driving position it offers, too.
Mercedes S-Class We’re starting with a car that is famed for its comfort and refinement. The S-Class – which was recently revised – has always brought a sumptuous quality to driving and this latest version is no different.
Citroen C4 If you’re after all-out comfort then Citroen has historically been one of the best options. Its latest C4, despite its distinctive design, has kept this time-honoured tradition to heart, maintaining high levels of comfort and refinement.
Thanks to air suspension and armchair-like seats, the S-Class is a car with which the hours will fly by – be that for passengers or drivers.
There’s also an electric version that, with its 217mile range and rapid charging capabilities, isn’t just restricted to local drives.

Audi Q5 Audi’s extensive line-up of SUVs might mean it’s a little tricky to choose, but we’d still opt for the Q5 given the choice. A mainstay of the firm’s range for many years now, the Q5 is a great option for families or those who need a little extra space.
Skoda Fabia Cars don’t need to be large in order to be comfortable. The Fabia is a great example of this, packing big-car refinement into a compact set-up. It’s surprisingly spacious, too, while a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines means it’s not expensive to run, either.
But if you’re after the best possible ride comfort, Skoda has also kitted the Fabia out with loads don’t be tempted to opt for a Q5 onAIRPORT larger alloy OPERATOR of features, ensuring that those long journeys wheels – they tend to upset the suspension Member and Supporter of the Delta Chamber of Commerce remain as comfortable as possible. somewhat.
BMW 8 Series BMW has a fine history when it comes to making comfortable yet involving grand tourers and the 8 Series is a great extension of this. It’s superb to drive and will monster even the longest stints with no hesitation.
Genesis GV80 Genesis is a relative newcomer to the UK, but it has already seen great success in countries like America. The GV80 is a car infused with stateside appeal; it’s big, spacious and – importantly for this list – comfortable.
There’s also an excellent diesel that, though not the most sporting of options, gives the 8 Series excellent long-range abilities.
The interior is particularly plush, while a silky straight-six diesel performs very well over long distances.
