What an eventful year this has been! I think that it’s safe to say that in 2015, nobody got the answer right to “where do you see yourself in 5 years?”, but I hope that everyone is adjusting to a normal that is comfortable to them.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM:
Why we wear poppies Scarlet poppies grow wild all over Western Europe wherever the soil has been disturbed. The battles of the First World War churned up such vast areas of earth that millions of poppies germinated and bloomed, often around the bodies of the fallen soldiers. A Canadian surgeon named John McRae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields in which the poppies symbolize the deaths of those who fought. It is a haunting memorial to those soldiers who have died in any war. Why do we have a two-minute silence? It was on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month that the guns of World War I fell silent. Four years of fighting and devastation finally ended. The following year, ceremonies of remembrance took place on what was known as Armistice Day. An Australian journalist, Edward George Honey first proposed a respectful silence to remember the dead. What’s On! • www.whatsonchilliwack.ca
By Sarah Davey
He wrote a letter to the London Evening News which was brought to the attention of King George V. The king then issued a proclamation which called for a two-minute silence. Armistice Day is now known as Remembrance. In 1931, Alan Neill, Member of Parliament for Comox–Alberni, introduced a bill to observe Armistice Day only on November 11. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to provide assistance to Veterans. Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. We remember the more than 2,300,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice. 7

PAY LESS AND GET MORE MORTGAGE INSURANCE
FIND YOUR PEACE OF MIND For most homeowners, their mortgage is the single largest source of personal debt. Mortgage protection insurance is a life insurance policy designed to pay off that debt in the event of your death. Through Amethyst Financial Planning, an Independent Broker, you get access to flexible mortgage insurance options which meet your needs. Amethyst Financial Planning has the opportunity to compare multiple insurance company offers and recommend the one best suited to your individual priorities. This is a comparison between an individually owned life insurance policy available from your Financial Planner and mortgage insurance through a financial lender:
Individual Policy Through Amethyst
Bank/Lending Institution
• Overall health is also taken into account and non-smokers receive discounts on their premiums.
• The cost depends on your age only. • You are covered for the exact amount of your mortgage balance and coverage reduces as your mortgage is paid down. • Coverage is not portable. You can’t take it with you if your mortgage provider changes. The cost of a new policy will depend on your age at the time you apply, and you may have to requalify medically.
• You choose how much coverage you need and your coverage remains level throughout the term of your policy. • The policy belongs to you and is fully portable. You have the choice to change your mortgage provider or renegotiate a better deal with your current lender as market conditions change. • You choose who you want to be your beneficiary and they decide how best to use the insurance proceeds.

• If you die, your mortgage provider automatically uses your policy to pay off your outstanding mortgage. Your family has no choice. • Full underwriting is usually done after a claim to determine your insurability; a process called "post-claim underwriting" or "underwriting after claim". The claim could be denied.

A GOOD READ Salvage the Bones It was a storm that made headlines around the world. In August 2005 Katrina hit the Louisiana coast causing great loss of life and destruction to New Orleans and the surrounding area. This awardwinning novel, set over a period of 12 days, tells the story of the Batiste family who live in the fictional town of Bois Sauvage. Esch is 15 years old and lives with her three brothers and their father. Isolated from the rest of the small town due to the location of their house, they live in extreme poverty, with a largely absent father who, seven years after the death of his wife, still relies on drink to get through the day. So, with the news that a category 5 storm is about to hit they begin to prepare what they can and

stockpile a small amount of food. Each chapter is one day in the build up to the storm. Randall, the eldest, is trying to do what he can to hold his family together. Skeetah is preoccupied with his pit-bull fighting dog, China, who has just given birth to puppies. Junior, the youngest, is trying to hold his own against his older brothers. And Esch has just discovered that she is pregnant. A captivating story with engaging characters, immerses you in their world, illustrated by a touch of Greek mythology thanks to a book that Esch (the narrator) is reading for school. The penultimate chapter will have your heart racing but ultimately this is the story of family love that survives despite the poverty and deprivation.
Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo Not a traditional novel here but definitely worth a read. This incredibly popular book (which has sparked a second volume) presents the stories of 100 amazing women who have made contributions to society. It is aimed at telling girls that they can achieve anything they put their mind to and that their gender should not hold them back. It challenges female stereotypes and inspires girls to aim high in their career choices. Each story is told on a single page, along with an illustration of the woman and this simple format gives a fantastic introduction to their lives. From mathematicians like Ada Lovelace (who actually built a machine and wrote the first computer programme back in the 19th century) to authors like

the Bronte Sisters who defied the expectations of their patriarchal society. There are also tales of astronomers, activists, lawyers, chefs, naturalists, journalists, motocross racers, and even a tattoo artist. Following the huge success of this book a version aimed at boys has also been written: Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different which challenges male stereotypes which say that you have to be tough in order to succeed. In the early days of your business, you’re probably going to be doing all the things yourself. Admin, social media, accounts, sending those emails and so on. But there will come a time when you realise that outsourcing some jobs is preferable to trying to do them all yourself. Here’s when you should consider hiring a copywriter and when to do it yourself.

Stay Healthy & Beautiful This Season
8 STEPS TO PREVENT DRY WINTER SKIN IT’S COMMON FOR MOST PEOPLE TO HAVE DRY SKIN DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN PREVENT DRY, FLAKING, ITCHY AND/OR CRACKING SKIN? YES, YOU CAN! 1 COOL IT DOWN When the weather outside is frightful, it’s very tempting to take long hot showers or baths, because it feels good on your skin to soak in soothing water that makes us feel warm. However, exposing your body to hot water for too long can be extremely drying to the skin. Keeping your baths and showers short (no more than 15 minutes) and using warm water instead of hot water will ensure that your skin will retain its own moisture.
2 DELICATE ARE WE? The skin around your eyes as well as other areas of the face is thin and requires gentle cleansing and regular, quality moisturizing to keep skin soft and supple. Applying a good eye serum and facial cream often during the winter will keep dry skin (and wrinkles) at bay.
3 ITHCY, FLAKIE NO NO'S As for itchy and irritated skin, switching to a mild cleanser also can help reduce or eliminate the itchiness associated with very dry skin. After your bath or shower, be sure to gently pat your skin dry with a clean soft towel and apply an ointment, body oil or moisturizing body lotion immediately afterwards. Take special care not to rub your skin dry with a towel as this can irritate it and exacerbate itching and flakiness.
4 INGREDIENTS MATTER Always
check the ingredients in skin care products because deodorant soaps and cleansers, alcohol-based toners and
products that contain fragrances can irritate dry, sensitive skin. Make sure your products are from a manufacturer you trust.
5 CRACKING REPAIRS Most people tend to wash their hands more often in the winter time to get rid of potentially harmful germs and bacteria, covid has amplified this. Counter this by applying a moisturizing hand cream afterwards. If your hands are extremely dry and require more attention, dabbing thicker cream on them and covering that with gloves at bed time is a good way to repair dry, cracking skin overnight.
6 HUMIDITY ANYONE Using a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home is another important step to preventing dry, itchy skin.
7 THE FABRIC OF OUR LIVES You also can wear soft fabrics that breathe, such as 100% cotton. If you wear wool or other rough fabrics, you should wear a soft fabric underneath.
8 HYDRATION Hydration is key! Nourishing your body with 8 to 10 glasses of water per day is a must to keep you healthy, vibrant, clear minded, and with clear and hydrated skin. Mineral water is one of the best sources to provide peak nourishment.
