WINTER PROJECTS Happy New Year! Stay inside, warm, and productive with a new home improvement project. While you won’t want to be outside in the cold this time of year, there’s always something to improve around the house. Try out these projects to stay busy and keep your home looking its best in 2021.
DIY PLANK ACCENT WALL
REPAINT A ROOM!
it, and affixing it to your wall, you can make your own DIY plank feature. Our wide selection of different stains will give your wall some pop, and stand out from the rest.
Winter is the perfect time for this project, no guilt for staying indoors, and you can spruce up the house for the new year! Here are some helpful tips to consider when planning a re-paint job:
Why not try out a new accent wall? An alternative to creating a painted accent wall, the wood planks look more rustic and different! By using a variety of dimensional lumber, sanding it down, staining
• Start with the right tools! It is vital that you start any painting project with both high quality paints and applicators. You will likely spend more money up-front for these materials, but in the long run, you will save yourself both time and money. • Be prepared and proactive! Take measurements before heading to the store to purchase. Always purchase a little extra paint in case you need to apply touch-ups in the future. • Before applying the primer and paint, ensure proper ventilation in the area you will be painting, especially if using oil-based paint. A new sale each week ensures that your painting project won’t break the bank! Come and see the wide variety of paint to choose from, including Benjamin Moore, SICO, and Rona.

When we first envisioned Corona’s, we thought of our own kitchen at home and all the get togethers, hosted with a delicious Mexican meal. We often heard our guest say “they’re at Corona’s” or “headed to Corona’s”. We wanted to keep the same feeling as if we invited you into our very own kitchen at home. With fresh ingredients and daily production, we want you to know and trust that we cook for you and your family like we cook for ourselves. Everything about cooking for others is what motivates us; seeing them enjoy our homemade meals, wanting to learn more about the Mexican culture & food. We’re also building relationships with our community. If we could describe Corona’s, we would have to say: vibrant, warm and authentic. 2020 has been a year full of the unexpected. It has impacted us in so many ways, but we are always willing to learn and adapt to provide the best quality in the safest way for our customers. We believe that’s why we have had such incredible support from our loved and loyal customers. We are thankful that we’re still here and running and we will keep pushing forward through any challenges to stay connected to our customers. We love Mission.
Thank you for your support, Autumn Corona

Where Can I Get My Copy?
2020 will be a year that many of us will never forget. COVID-19 has touched everyone’s lives in one way or another and has presented challenges that we could never have imagined or expected. Throughout the dark moments, there have been glimpses of love, humanity and kindness that have become my beacon of hope as we face 2021. For me, this new year is not about resolutions so much as it is about optimism and getting to the other end of the pandemic. We may all have differing views on the things that are happening in our world, but we are in this together and our common goal is to be together again ‘in person’. I cannot wait until we are back at Clarke Theatre watching a live performance; dancing with friends at a Festival at Heritage Park; or shaking hands with a local artist at a Mission Art Gallery Exhibit. But until then, please support all the virtual events and fundraisers in this issue. Support our local business and restaurant owners and help push them through this pandemic.
We can do this together, Mission!

WHAT’S ON!
WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO AND HOW WE’RE ROUNDING IT OFF IN 2021
The District of Mission partnered with the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, Community Futures North Fraser, The Junction Shopping Centre, Mission Downtown Business Association, Mission City Record, and What’s On! Mission Magazine to support the Mission-based business community through the impacts of COVID-19. The campaign developed free online skills development training, a targeted marketing campaign, and a central location for all COVID-19 businessrelated support.
BUSINESS SUPPORT
SPREAD THE LOVE
For the first time, many business owners and staff had time available as their storefronts were closed, allowing them to develop new skills. Seven workshops with key community speakers were created and run in a virtual environment. The workshops included using Google My Business, the reinvention of the workplace, the key elements required for an effective website, and developing a digital marketing strategy.
If you shopped local this year you may have received a button, window decal, or thank you note with your purchase. The retail and restaurant sectors worked hard to pivot their sales methods to offer customers the opportunity for takeout, curbside pick up, online shopping, and safe in-person shopping experiences. Through making these purchased YOU supported your neighbour, friend, local artisan, employer, or entrepreneur, keeping hard-earned dollars in our community – Thank you!
Interested in these yourself? Go to: mission.ca/ilovemission for the details.

THANK YOU To share the love this past Christmas, the I Love Mission team set out to purchase gift cards for the unique Mission businesses, cafes, and restaurants. This was to say “Thank You” to Mission customers who showed their love and support from shopping local this past year. These were randomly given to unsuspecting patrons from those who had just begun to browse to those purchasing in-store, through curbside pick-up, delivery, and online. It was a great way of “wrapping” up the Season! If you haven’t seen the video check it out at mission.ca/ilovemission

Buying a Home that Needs Some Work When you’re shopping for a new home, you probably want the property to be as “move in ready” as possible. That way, you can... well... just move in! However, there are a lot of fantastic properties on the market that need some work. For example, you might see a home that has everything you need, but the kitchen is long overdue for a renovation. Or, you might view a property that requires a lot of repairs and painting — tasks that, at first glance, seem overwhelming. GLACIER VALLEY ROOFING IS A FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED BUSINESS WITH 28 YEARS OF ROOFING EXPERIENCE. We do all types of residential and commercial applications, including a Service Division that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Superior and efficient workmanship, timeliness and reasonable prices are the basic standards you can expect when working with Glacier Valley Roofing. Our Company has a strong reputation for high quality and is fully licenced and insured. Call Bym Mensink at 604-551-8742 for your FREE ESTIMATE and consultation today.

You don’t want to just pass on a property that might be a great buy. On the other hand, you don’t want to purchase a home, only to end up with more renovations, repairs and expenses than you anticipated. What’s the solution? Here’s an idea. When you view a home that needs work, make a note of exactly what needs to be done. Stick to the important “must have” improvements and leave “nice to have” improvements for a later time. Chances are, you’ll identify just one or two projects — such as “paint all the walls” or “replace the countertops in the kitchen”. Once you have that list, you’ll be in a better position to determine how long the work will likely take and the approximate cost. This will give you some needed perspective on whether or not to buy the home. If a home you’re considering needs $15,000 in work that can probably be completed within two months, that might make the property worth buying. In fact, it probably would! So, when you see an otherwise ideal home that needs some work, don’t let your imagination make that work into more than it is. Take notes and get estimates. If you’re interested in moving to a larger more spacious home, give me a call direct 604-615-6446

Review
If you’ve come into Totally Book•ish and told me you enjoy mystery, it’s very likely that I’ve recommended Long Bright River to you. Now in paperback, this story is part mystery, part sisterbond, and part social justice. Mickey and her sister Casey grow up with an absent father and a drugaddicted mother. As they mature into adults, the sisters take different paths in response to their dysfunctional childhood. Mickey becomes a straight and narrow police officer, raising her son on her own. Casey, however, is an addict living on the streets.
telling of some very present issues: drug abuse, broken relationships, and harm reduction, and Liz Moore does an excellent job of taking these delicate and painful subjects and exposing the multiple sides of them without being graphic or preachy. The strength of this book though, is in the bond between these two sisters despite their opposing choices and paths. Be forewarned, the characters may become so real, their struggles and stories so relevant, that after reading you may find yourself wondering about them as you mop your floors or top up the gas tank.
When Casey disappears during a string of serial murders in the city, Mickey becomes obsessed with finding both her estranged sister and the killer. This is not a fluffy tale. It is a compassionate
Long Bright River is a book that will squeeze your heart, circulate in your bloodstream, and have you feeling differently by the last page, and at Totally Book•ish, we think those are the best kinds of books.

Not many businesses can brag loyal and solid customers ranging over 3-4 generations. They have always been forward thinking with the clothing lines they carry and are known for their ability to talk most men into newer, more fashionable outfits.
“People have grown to trust us,” Carlo boasts. “We are the ones that they turn to for prom, first dates and weddings. We have grown up with the community just as much as they’ve grown up with us.” Rex Cox has always prided themselves on working towards the betterment of our community. New businesses come and go, and there will always be a certain element of competition regardless of what you sell, but protectionism doesn’t help thread our neighbourhood together. When asked how to get through difficult and challenging times, Carlo advises: "Hang on to the top part of the rope for as long as you can and if you have to come down, only come down by 1 notch. Keep the lines of communication open with your suppliers and your customers. Go extraordinary. Only concentrate on the positive. Work with the community and especially the people who are your customers in the community.

If you haven’t wandered into Picturesque, you should definitely make a point to do so. This cozy & chic boutique embraces you through a whirlwind of fashion that you wouldn’t otherwise find in another clothing store in Mission. What started off as an offhand remark amongst her friends soon became the spark that ignited her passion for fashion and the idea of having her own business. “My neighbour bought me a book on how to open a boutique. I read every single page and ticked off all the check marks along the way.” Carole points out, remembering how dedicated she was. “Next thing I knew, I had a clothing store.” The difficult (and fun) part was coming up with a unique name. There was a lot of back and forth between Carole and her husband Brad, and after much frustration, she said "I just want something picturesque!" That was it. The name had been chosen. It has been three years since Carole opened up her shop and has gained a reputation, not only in Mission but all throughout the Fraser Valley for carrying beautiful lines of clothing. She keeps local women well-dressed and looking picturesque in Frank Lyman, Papillon, Joseph Ribkoff, Mavi Jeans and Bella Amore. Picturesque is a place where fashion meets fun. From the moment you enter the store, you will be pampered with personal one-on-one service and a smile. Carole takes pride in carrying the latest fashions that cater to all ages and body types. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Picturesque has faced real challenges. Her lovely staff have added a fun element to their marketing strategy by having fashion shows regularly for people to view online. Carole remains positive and continues to welcome all of her customers with a smile. She says "smiles lighten the load, brighten the day and never go out of style".

Cory Cassel Cares ”I care deeply about Mission.” “It is my hometown, the place I was born and my community. I went to school in Mission, have worked and operated businesses in Mission, and I have spent most of my life focussed on building community here. Now, it is time for me to share my experience and skills on our municipal council. Throughout my life, I have spent countless hours engaging in and learning about local government. I understand the function and processes of local government, the roles and responsibilities of elected officials and the qualities that community leaders need to be effective stewards. My perspective of the challenges our city faces encompasses many sectors having worked in the business community, supported many of our non-profits and navigated the challenges of our social services providers. I have proven my ability to lead and have demonstrated that I possess the networks required to draw upon the talents of Mission residents needed to move our city forward and I have the time and the support that I need to be your Mayor. Please consider electing me to be the next Mayor of Mission… because I care about our community as much as you do.”

This mother/daughter duo started their business with one main goal: bringing that distinct Montreal style bagel to Mission. The family has lived in Montreal since March 1987. In the 20+ years of East coast living, St-Viateur bagels were a staple in their home. They’d come back with two dozen bags of sesame bagels of which half of them would be eaten by the time they reached home. Fast-forward twenty years, Fatemeh, her husband and youngest child moved to the beautiful west coast while the two eldest children stayed behind. After having settled in North Vancouver, the quest to find that identical Montreal style bagel only ended in disappointment. Soon after, Fatemeh and her husband decided to move out of the big city and into the beautify district of Mission, where she made bagels at home for herself and her family whenever they had a craving.

Her daughter Mahshid joined her parents three years ago, leaving behind a life of computer programming in exchange for some new adventures. Little did both mother and daughter know, the idea of opening a bagel shop in Mission would soon blossom and grow into what it is today. The name OhBagel came to them after the realization that they can do this, a sort of “oh!” moment. They had heard of all the people heading to Vancouver for their traditional bagels and so they thought “let’s do this! Let’s bring real, traditional bagels to the Fraser Valley.”
Oh!Bagel
Finding the right spot was a long and hard decision. They were already making bagels at home, but they were limited in space and equipment. With the demand increasing, they had to quickly jump into action: they transformed the double-door garage into their commercial bakery with what is now known as the ever-famous little home-based bagel shop. What sets their bagels apart from everyone else? The simple fact that they are traditionally made has given them a very unique style. Call them old-fashion if you must, but they thoroughly love sticking to what works, with the simplest of recipes and no preservatives. Each bagel is weighted, hand-rolled, and boiled, which is what gives it that quirky look and distinct flavour. Being dairy and egg free, it has allowed a wide range of people to enjoy these chewy bagels. OhBagel is proud to be a part of our community, offering different bagel flavours, from regular size to minis. As a thank you for all the love and support Mission has given them, they have been providing free delivery to Missionites every week. Because of COVID and people quarantining, OhBagel also carries other delicious options such as traditional loaves, bagel crackers and Everything Seasoning for bulk purchases. WHAT’S ON!
MISSION SPOTLIGHT:
WHAT’S ON!
Stay Healthy & Beautiful This Season
8 STEPS TO PREVENT DRY WINTER SKIN IT’S COMMON FOR MOST PEOPLE TO HAVE DRY SKIN DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN PREVENT DRY, FLAKING, ITCHY AND/OR CRACKING SKIN? YES, YOU CAN! 1 COOL IT DOWN When the weather outside is frightful, it’s very tempting to take long hot showers or baths, because it feels good on your skin to soak in soothing water that makes us feel warm. However, exposing your body to hot water for too long can be extremely drying to the skin. Keeping your baths and showers short (no more than 15 minutes) and using warm water instead of hot water will ensure that your skin will retain its own moisture.
2 DELICATE ARE WE? The skin around your eyes as well as other areas of the face is thin and requires gentle cleansing and regular, quality moisturizing to keep skin soft and supple. Applying a good eye serum and facial cream often during the winter will keep dry skin (and wrinkles) at bay.
3 ITHCY, FLAKIE NO NO'S As for itchy and irritated skin, switching to a mild cleanser also can help reduce or eliminate the itchiness associated with very dry skin. After your bath or shower, be sure to gently pat your skin dry with a clean soft towel and apply an ointment, body oil or moisturizing body lotion immediately afterwards. Take special care not to rub your skin dry with a towel as this can irritate it and exacerbate itching and flakiness.
4 INGREDIENTS MATTER Always
check the ingredients in skin care products because deodorant soaps and cleansers, alcohol-based toners and
products that contain fragrances can irritate dry, sensitive skin. Make sure your products are from a manufacturer you trust.
5 CRACKING REPAIRS Most people tend to wash their hands more often in the winter time to get rid of potentially harmful germs and bacteria, covid has amplified this. Counter this by applying a moisturizing hand cream afterwards. If your hands are extremely dry and require more attention, dabbing thicker cream on them and covering that with gloves at bed time is a good way to repair dry, cracking skin overnight.
6 HUMIDITY ANYONE Using a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home is another important step to preventing dry, itchy skin.
7 THE FABRIC OF OUR LIVES You also can wear soft fabrics that breathe, such as 100% cotton. If you wear wool or other rough fabrics, you should wear a soft fabric underneath.
8 HYDRATION Hydration is key! Nourishing your body with 8 to 10 glasses of water per day is a must to keep you healthy, vibrant, clear minded, and with clear and hydrated skin. Mineral water is one of the best sources to provide peak nourishment.
For more information on how you can have soft, supple skin during the winter and year-round, reserve a consultation with Tammy and let her help YOUR skin look and feel its very best! Call 604-259-2193 or email elegancemdskincare@gmail.com today!

DONNA GIBBONS: WRITING & DRAWING FOR HEALING By Ellen Nguyen
When you meet Donna, the first thing she wants you to know is that she just wants to help people. After having her own life-changing experience, she hopes that sharing her writing and artwork will help others on their own journey of life. Donna Gibbons has been a Mission resident since 1991. And her first book Haunted In Hatzic: So It Begins is based on her spiritual experience near Hatzic Rock (Xรก:ytem). Her vision of a young Indigenous boy on top of the rock sparked her decision to share her story, which will become the first of 11 books in her Haunted in Hatzic series. All throughout her life, Donna has been creative and helping people with their spiritual journey, but at the age of 67, she decided to put it all on paper. And she hasn't stopped writing or drawing since.
A true labour of love, Haunted in Hatzic: So It Begins is handwritten in cursive and the illustrations are hand drawn. She gives a lot of credit to her husband Thomas, who is not only her biggest fan, but also a huge influence on the creative direction of all of her work. She continues to keep busy with many projects on the go. She has compiled her drawings into a colouring book, Fantasy by The Doodle Dragons. She is also writing another book about her healing journey from a traumatic car accident while she continues to write her Haunted in Hatzic series. It goes to show that no matter where you are in your life journey, it's never too late to find inspiration and beauty if you are open to it.
You can get copies of her work at: The Enchanted World of Dragonfly 196 Esplanade Ave, Harrison Hot Springs

Here’s Owner/Publisher Ellen’s experience of What’s On!... “What’s On! Mission has allowed me to raise my family while doing a job that I love. The flexibility of this business has allowed me to fit in time for family and work, while keeping me engaged in my community. What’s On! has built a structure that makes it easy to learn how to run a business and still allows me to be creative. Nothing brings me greater joy than walking into a coffee shop and seeing people reading my magazine“
