WINTER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER PREPARE EXTERIOR WATER FAUCETS AND SPIGOTS Now is the time to disconnect and drain any hoses that are stored outside. Shut off the valve that controls the flow to your outside tap. This valve is usually located inside your house. Once this valve is shut off, open the outside tap to drain any water. Now is the time to consider those freeze-proof faucets covers! SNOW REMOVAL GEAR This is a great time to stock up on snow removal gear and de-icers. Once the snow falls everyone rushes to buy salt and shovels. Don’t forget car brushes, RV anti-freeze. Beat the rush and be prepared for that winter morning when your car is stuck in the driveway. REPLACE FURNACE FILTER The air filter in your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit needs to be replaced every 1-3 months to keep the air in your home clean and the system running efficiently. Remember to write the date on the new filter so you know when to change it next time.
regulate and monitor the temperature in your home and efficiently help in lowering your utility bills. YOUR GUTTER AND YARD The leaves should be mostly gone now, so clean out your gutters and keep water flowing freely away from your house. Prepare your yard equipment for storage. This includes draining fuel from all gas-operated equipment such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and chain saws. REFRESH YOUR INTERIOR The cold weather will force families to spend more time indoors. Why not update one of your favourite rooms with a fresh coat of paint? Something as inexpensive as a new wall colour can make your bathroom or living room take on a new life.
KEEP THE COLD OUT Drafty doors and windows are typically the biggest culprits with regard to a home’s heating system overrunning; and weatherstripping and caulking are the place to start. Door sweeps, window film, pipe wraps and insulation/ expanding foam also help to keep the cold out. A programmable thermostat is a great way to Hours of operation: We’re open 7 days a week, and are open early and late on weekdays.

@whatsonmission
What a whirlwind of a year 2020 has been! We would never have imagined life as it is now. And it will be too soon if I ever hear these words again: social distancing, bending the curve, the new normal and quarantine. There were and are still many hardships and anxieties. But upon reflection, there were also many moments that I will cherish: spending time at home with my family; learning to bake bread from scratch and planting my first fruityielding garden. This winter may not look the same as last year, but I hope we don’t forget the spirit of the holidays. Give the gift of your time to the many local charities and non-profit organizations that are still trying to raise funds and help those in need. Show love by checking in on a neighbour or senior that may just need an ear or a hand. When possible, give back to your community by shopping at local businesses and eateries because they need our help as they get back on their feet.

ZOOM MUSIC BINGO FUNDRAISERS with Cory Cassel Productions
Cory Cassel Productions is all about building community through events, and with the current restrictions for hosting live events, we have found ourselves searching for ways that we could continue to bring people together and support nonprofit organizations whose work is vital to our communities. Music Bingo has been a crowd favourite in our local pubs for years and now we can enjoy playing online. Zoom Music Bingo started in April after the pandemic shut down pubs and restaurants and people began looking for ways to have fun at home. I was having a lot of fun playing Zoom Music Bingo from our home in Japan, so I connected with Sean Constable, the owner of Music Bingo Worldwide, and asked if there might be an opportunity to host fundraisers on Zoom for nonprofits in Mission. Our first 2 events in support of the Mission Firefighters’ Charitable Society were successful and we raised $2800 to support their work in our community. We have also hosted Zoom Music Bingo Fundraisers for Mission Literacy in Motion, Sasquatch Lions Club and Mission Folk Music Festival, with thousands of dollars raised to support the work of those organizations. Zoom Music Bingo is a fantastic opportunity to raise money, have fun and stay safe in the comfort of our homes while connecting with others. If you think a Zoom Music Bingo Fundraiser might be an opportunity for your organization to raise money, or if you are a business owner looking for a great way to promote your business online, please contact me at cory@musicbingo.com or at Cory Cassel Productions on Facebook. I will be happy to give you information about how our events work and the support we offer to ensure your fundraiser is successful. You can also find out about other Music Bingo events online and also live in some of our favourite pubs at www.musicbingo.com. Covid-19 hit Mission Firefighters’ Charitable Society hard. We were forced to cancel all our fundraising events. Cory suggested we try a Zoom Music Bingo fundraiser. Our first event was so well received we quickly planned a second and will be doing more.- Mike Todd, Mission Firefighters’ Charitable Society.

Ami’s
Review
Winter is a season that begs cozy nights, warm drinks, and a good book to swallow you up in its world. We all long for that special hour where we can tuck away with our sweater, slippers, and candlelight to spend the dark evenings of our west coast winters, and I have the perfect book. Alaska, 1920: New homesteaders, Mabel and Jack, are finding it a brutal place to tame, made worse by their mutual, yet longunfulfilled, desire for a child. They escape to the Alaskan solitude, in hopes of leaving behind their grief. However, the isolating silence is deafening, and while Jack takes on the land, Mabel succumbs to loneliness and despair. Then, on the first snowfall, they stumble out into the frosty night and playfully build a child out of snow, a little girl. They carve her a face, delicate and beautiful, and give her a scarf and some mittens. They gather hay for hair, and
crushed berries for a touch of colour on her lips. When they are done, Jack and Mabel are warmed by the thought that if this is the only child they will make together, she seems enough. In the morning, the snow child is gone, but they glimpse a young girl running through the trees. She calls herself Faina, and lives among the woods with a red fox at her side. In time, they come to love her as if she were their own daughter. But in this place, so beautiful, yet so violent, things are rarely what they seem. Inspired by a Russian fairy tale, The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey is about struggle in the snow-crusted north, the longing for a family, and an unexpected little girl who offers love and healing. I promise this book will add just the right amount of magic to your own snowy night. On the shelves now at Totally Book-ish.

8th Annual Festival of Trees and Dramatic Reading
The Annual Festival of Trees and Dramatic Reading of Dylan Thomas's “A Child's Christmas in Wales” will have to be cancelled this year due to the COVID19 Pandemic. It is very disappointing not to have the event this year, but it is for the health and safety of all; we will all have to look forward to the 2021 event. Over the last number of years we have appreciated the support and contributions of everyone involved in the event, especially the Organizing Committee members, All Saints Anglican Church, volunteers, all the businesses, organizations, families, individuals, and donors; along with the many talented musicians and entertainers. Many thanks goes to Whats On! Mission magazine, and the Mission Record newspaper for their ongoing support over the years. If you have any questions, contact jmjmission@telus.net or call 604-556-6976. Everyone, please continue to support your local Mission Christmas Bureau this year in any way you are able. Tuesday, December 8th Wednesday, December 9th Thursday, December 10th Donations of non-perishable food items, toys, gifts and cash will be accepted for the Mission Christmas Bureau at All Saints Anglican Church, 2nd Avenue Entrance, from 3 - 7pm

How to Find a Home that Has your “Big Three” How do you find the home of your dreams within a price range you can afford?
We are a Re-Pipe and Renovations company that repairs or replaces Cold and Hot Water Building Mains; Hot Water Recirculation Lines and Risers; Re-pipe and Repair inferior or worn out Water Pipe Systems with new PEX Systems or New Copper; and General Plumbing Repairs. We will follow up with drywall repairs, finishing and painting.
Most buyers start by making a “wish list”. But, it’s easy to get frustrated when you have a long wish list and expect you’ll be able to find a home with every one of those features. You might, for example, have “mature backyard tree” as number 23 on your list, and become disappointed when an otherwise ideal property doesn’t have one. But when you really think about it, your ideal home probably comes down to just three or four core characteristics. For example:
Red Seal since 1976 - Re-Pipe industry.
1. Nice, safe, family-oriented neighbourhood. 2. Good-sized backyard. 3. Four bedrooms and two baths. Sure, there might be other features you were hoping for, such as “move in ready”, or that big tree, but your “big three” are the ones you really can’t do without.
Give Keith a Call for a FREE Estimate
So, when you’re shopping for a new home, yes, definitely make a long list of features and characteristics you desire. After all, there might be properties available on the market that check off most, if not all, of those boxes.
Fully insured and registered with Worksafe BC and GST. All work guaranteed.
Master Plumber - Over 30 years'
Dry-Wall Repairs included with a Re-Pipe
But also circle those three or four characteristics that are at the core of what you want. That will help make your property search much more focused and you’ll be more likely to find your next dream home. Another advantage of coming up with your big three (or four) is that you’ll be able to quickly discover how much homes with those characteristics are selling for on today’s market. Once you know that price range, you’ll be able to talk with a mortgage advisor to pre-arrange financing. That will make your offer on that dream home even stronger. Whatever you choose for your “big three”, I can help you find and buy that home. Call me 604-615-6446

WHAT’S ON!
MISSION SPOTLIGHT: Evoke Wellness The story of Evoke Wellness began with a vision of health and well-being of our community. Nine years ago, two young entrepreneurs decided to combine their expertise. Lacy Whitford, a Registered Massage Therapist, and Lee Phillips, a Chiropractor, set out to start a business together. Their goal was to create a multidisciplinary space that would provide the opportunity for patients to best access the treatment they required. Multiple practitioners such as Registered Massage Therapists, Chiropractors, Naturopathic doctors, Acupuncturists and Mental Health Counsellors could work under one roof, each, in turn, learning from one another. It was difficult in the beginning due to the fact that they were new to the community, had an almost non-existent budget and very little business experience. They were met with continual rejection from banks. And finally, equipped only with ambition and a vision, they ventured into Community Futures. “The team loved our idea,” said Whitford. And Evoke Wellness Centre was born.

Within their first year of opening, Evoke exceeded their expectations and reached their 5 year projection plan. “We started with the 2 of us. Before long, we had 4 administrative staff and 9 practitioners working out of our space.” It was always Lacy’s dream to have a business in a heritage home. With the possibility of their leased space being sold, it was perfect timing for them to purchase the Schuh Boutik. With the help of 4th Dimension Drafting and Lacey Construction, her dream became reality. They have been at their new location since January 2019 and their determination through all of the challenges goes to show that dreams can be achieved. Both Lee and Lacy are the first to admit that it’s the community connections that have contributed significantly to the success of Evoke Wellness Centre.

ZAJAC RANCH Tucked away on the shores of Mission’s Stave Lake is Zajac Ranch for Children. What was once the site of a Provincial corrections facility is now a place of wonder. A place where all limitations are left behind, and everyone is empowered to embrace the possibilities that lie ahead of them. A place where individuals are appreciated, celebrated, and accepted just as they are with no expectations to change. Out here, we raise spirits. The creation of Zajac Ranch for Children came from a time of deep loss. In 1986 Mel and Irene Zajac received the devastating news that their eldest son, Mel Jr., had drowned in a kayaking accident. While still grieving his passing, another tragic accident took their second son, Marty, eight months later. Knowing they may never fully recover from such unexpected and overwhelming loss, but recognizing the need to move forward, Mel Sr. and Irene set out to create a legacy that would continue to give back to the community for years to come. They founded The Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation in 1987 as a living legacy in memory of the two young men. There are over 21,000 children age 5 - 14 with special needs in British Columbia, and thousands more with disabilities and illnesses. Zajac Ranch for Children opened in 2004, after research done by the Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation showed the need for a facility with the accessibility and medical facilities to 1 26
cope with the multifaceted requirements of children with life threatening and chronic illnesses residing in BC. Campers get to partake in activities such as horseback riding, swimming, kayaking, camping, sports, archery, crafts, music and theater in an inclusive and empowering environment. All activity areas are fully accessible so that even children with the most complex conditions can participate while receiving expert care. Zajac Ranch offers the ultimate camp experience — a place of excitement and fun, of healing and wellness — for children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend camp. In 2019, nearly 500 children and youth with medical needs attended summer camp at Zajac Ranch for Children. This summer has seen a change in our operations amongst the COVID-19 pandemic as we adapted to offer Family Retreats. Our new cohortbased model has campers stay within their family ‘bubbles’ while still experiencing the joys of camp. Zajac Ranch was host to 268 campers (parents & children) who likely would not have had another respite from the effects of the pandemic this summer. At Zajac Ranch for Children we work hard to ensure hundreds of children with long term medical conditions and disabilities can come to camp each summer. We share a passion for helping children and inspiring others within our community. To advertise call 604.308.6380 or e-mail WhatsOnMission@live.ca

The Wee Chippie Fish & Chips More than just great Fish n Chips Some places bring back the best memories. The Wee Chippie has been a Mission institution for decades. First opened in the Mission

ago,
this
fantastic British style diner has seen a few incarnations of itself, and is now located in the Mission Gate Plaza directly behind KFC.
Serving up classic dishes like meat pie, mushy peas and brown beans, The Wee Chippie is best known for the fish & chips. The large portions of battered cod, halibut or salmon, home cut fries and delicious tartar sauce are a favorite staple of many Missionites. I tend to gravitate to the All-You-Can-Eat option but know that the two piece dinner is really all I need to get my fill of the greasy goodness.
CORY'S
One of my most cherished traditions was fish & chips with my Nan on
Remembrance Day.
For years, we would attend the
memorial ceremony at the Clarke Theatre and then head down to
the
Legion
to
watch
the
laying
of
the
wreaths
at
the
cenotaph. Then, like clockwork, we would head over to The Wee Chippie for fish & chips. With a bit of chill from the usually wet November weather, we both secretly looked forward to getting inside the restaurant and warming up with a plate of one of our favorite
foods.
We
would
both
even
order
a
soda
because
everyone knows you need a sweet, bubbly soda to clear the palette after a plate of deep fried delectables!
The Wee Chippie will always hold a special place in my heart and I do still try to go for lunch on November 11th… to remember special times with Nan, and to get my fill of the best fish & chips in town!

Remembrance Day Wednesday, November 11
Remembrance Day in Mission will look different this year. Due to COVID-19, our parade at the Clarke Theatre has been cancelled. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57 will have a small ceremony at the Cenotaph at 10:40am. There will be a small gathering in the lounge but will be limited due to safety protocols. A meal, Beef Dip & Potato Salad for $10, will be available for take-out.

A.Dr. Marcy is happy to provide lifestyle tips for optimizing your care outside of your appointments. Try out these tips! Exercise regularly to decrease the impact of stress on your health, and decrease your headaches. Relax your muscles by applying heat to sore muscles in the shoulders. Massage, and a warm bath, will also relieve muscle tension. Correct your posture to keep your muscles from tensing up, and reduce strain on your body. A jutting head, combined with slumped shoulders, can cause fatigue and tension in your neck and upper back. Record when your headaches occur, and what you were doing before they started. Try to recognize the factors that cause, or aggravate, your headaches. Be sure to tell your chiropractor if you’ve noticed any changes in your usual headaches, such as: frequency, duration; intensity; or if your headaches begin to worry you. Q. How Can Chiropractic Help? A. Dr. Marcy can perform a chiropractic assessment to find out if you need help with the following:

THE MISSION HEALTH CARE AUXILIARY SOCIETY The Mission Health Care Auxiliary Society is an organization of men and women who help Mission Memorial Hospital provide non-medical services and comforts to the patients of the hospital. Their mission is to support, enhance and promote health care in our community through volunteering and fundraising. In the course of many hours of volunteering, money has been raised for many health-related services at the Mission Memorial Hospital and local health care facilities to purchase equipment, comforts, and bus services.
Cottage thrift store in Downtown Mission reopened to the public with safety protocols in place. All donations are put into a 48hour quarantine before they are sorted and organized for sale. Except for Mondays, they are accepting donations of clean and usable items, such as clothing, houseware and furniture. If you are looking to give back to our community, take a browse through The Cottage thrift store or contact them through their website, https:// missionhealthcareaux. com, as they are always looking for volunteers.
This past spring marked the 100th Year Anniversary of the Auxiliary. Due to COVID-19, the Celebration event was cancelled. They are still hoping to commemorate this milestone in 2021. They have made a donation of $110,000 to the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation for the lab replacement in 2019. In 2018, they gave another $118,000 to the Foundation for a chest compressor, blood pressure cuffs and the final payment on an ultrasound machine. They have also purchased the wheelchair washer as well. The bulk of their fundraising funds comes from The Cottage thrift store and Mission Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, both of which are 100% run by volunteers. This June, The 38 1

MINDFULNESS: Does it Really Help with Stress? It would be an understatement to say that we are currently living in a constant state of change due to the onset of a worldwide pandemic. Everyone is trying to adapt as best they can to an evolving situation. This creates an uncertain environment, which in turn brings more stress to our day to day lives. Stress is meant to be short-lived and should not be a 24/7 experience because it wears the body and immune system down. While stressed, we are more likely to react to situations than to respond with reason. Whether you are a parent or grandparent, an employer or employee, or a teenager or child, nothing feels the same these days. We are living in a constant state of stress and fear of the unknown. And this wreaks havoc on our bodies. So, is there anything we can do for ourselves daily to mitigate and help maintain a calmer mind in this situation? The word ‘mindfulness’ or ‘meditation’ seems to have gained momentum recently. People have a lot of questions and preconceived notions about it: I can’t sit cross legged. My mind is always going full speed and only a pill helps me sleep. Is it a religion? Is there a difference? Do I have to do this every day? Does it really help? Mindfulness is an awareness of being in the moment at any time, of paying attention to thoughts 40 1
and sensations without judgment. Mindful meditation guides our thoughts to what is happening in the present moment rather than constantly rehashing the past or worrying and imagining what will happen in the future. It doesn’t take much and it can be done in your daily life. I know many of you are rushing around all day. But say you walk by a beautiful park. Make the decision to stop and enjoy a peaceful moment. Slow down and relax; take in the beauty of the green grass or soft snow falling; listen to the birds singing. If your phone rings, ignore it; just give yourself permission to take a few moments just for yourself. This can be repeated many times a day, and over time, your mind will start to refocus on positive and calmer thoughts even in chaotic times. And there’s no time limit, this can be one minute to twenty or more. While observing, notice your breathing pattern, how it changes when we focus our attention on something that brings more peace to our thoughts. Many years ago, I worked with a client who had PTSD from being at war. He just wanted to start lifting weights again, but I started each session with mindfulness and breathing. Three months later, he never missed a session and his panic attacks subsided dramatically.
breathe more deeply or observing what is happening in the moment can work. We are conditioned to rely on external methods like medication or alcohol. And in some cases, they are helpful but if everyone practiced mindfulness, the benefits could be incredible. Is it easy? You just need to make a mindful decision to give it a try. COUNCIL’S MID-TERM UPDATE Below are the 6 strategic focus areas Council identified in their 2018-2022 term in their Strategic Plan: • Safe Community
Economic Development – What’s Coming 2021 Employment Lands Strategy
• Engaged Community
The District of Mission is currently developing a Council directed Employment Lands Strategy. In order to create this strategy, an analysis of Mission’s current retail, commercial and industrial land base and business composition is being completed and paired with population growth projections to best determine future land base and employment needs for Mission. This study is expected to be completed in early 2021.
• Organizational Excellence
Official Community Plan Amending Bylaw: Waterfront Comprehensive Planning Area
• Secure Finances, Assets and Infrastructure • Bold Economic Development • Livable Complete Community
Council has released a mid-term report to Mission, sharing the progress achieved in each area and beyond. Here are a few of the highlights: • A condo development started for Wren and Raven, the first in 14 years. • An affordable daycare program launched at Heritage Park Daycare. • The introduction of blue recycling bins to the curbside collection program to reduce the additional waste from blue bags. • Completion of a Housing Needs Assessment to help guide the future growth of Mission. • Completion of a Master Infrastructure Strategy to support the Silverdale Comprehensive Planning Area. To read the full report, including all the highlights, fun facts and things to come, visit: https://www.mission.ca/councilreport/mobile/index.html
On September 21st, the Official Community Plan (OCP) was amended as Council voted to adopt the Waterfront Comprehensive Planning Area (WCPA). The WCPA is a designation that identifies the waterfront lands generally as a comprehensive planning area, a necessary first step to ensure the long-term vision for waterfront revitalization. This initiative will see the District of Mission champion the complex work needed to collaborate with landowners, stakeholders, First Nations, senior levels of government and residents alike to provide current and prospective landowners the assurance and support of a partnership to address the challenges, reduce risk, and unlock the potential of the waterfront. Council’s ongoing commitment to the Waterfront Revitalization Initiative continues their goal of aligning with the community’s vision and expectations for the area. Transportation Master Plan The Transportation Master Plan is a long-range plan that identifies strategic, prioritized investments
needed over the next 25 years to create a safe, cost-effective and sustainable transportation network. The process will assess the existing transportation system, including roadway, cycling, pedestrian and transit networks and infrastructure, and will develop an implementation plan for the District’s Traffic Safety Strategy. It considers existing travel patterns and behaviour, future travel conditions, the Official Community Plan’s future land use assumptions, and the provincial Active Transportation Design Guide. The Plan will also include a high-level review of the feasibility of creating a port terminal on the Fraser River For more information, please visit our website at www.mission.ca
