Anniversary for one of the great organizations in our city, Burnaby Family Life. You can read about that on p.16. There’s also a story about some terrific programs for people suffering with dementia run by Burnaby Seniors Outreach (p.28).
Now that 2020 is behind us, surely things can only get better! Of course, there may be naysayers, but we are certainly hoping for better days ahead in 2021!

BURNABY PIANO TEACHER’S KIWI STYLE OFFERS WELL-ROUNDED MUSIC EDUCATION WE ARE CANADA … Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.” In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours … in hopes of becoming friends..
Following graduation from high school, Susan commenced studies toward a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Auckland. She completed that degree and then a Master of Music. During this time, she started teaching piano and after university gained her piano teacher’s diploma and became a registered Music teacher. It was something encouraged by her mom, who taught piano in their home during Susan’s childhood. It also helped to pay the bills during university!
One might think that immigrating from another Englishspeaking country to Canada is almost like moving to Vancouver from another part of Canada. For music teacher, Susan Kiddie, her experience has proven to be not quite that easy. While she moved from her native New Zealand some 30 years ago, through the years she has experienced many of the same struggles as other immigrants.
Susan then enrolled at Christchurch Teachers’ Training College where she gained her Diploma of Teaching. It was a busy year, singing in the National Youth Choir of NZ and the Jubilate Singers of Christchurch, playing a role in a production of Fiddler on the Roof and also getting engaged to Peter, whom she married in 1987. Over the next few years, Susan taught music and directed choirs in two different secondary schools. It was while working at one of these schools, that Susan had the opportunity to take a Chamber Choir from the school on a tour to Calgary, Alberta, her first visit to Canada.
“I found that the language was quite different with many differences in expressions,” Susan explained. “I came as a Ph.D. student to UBC and plunged into my studies, but there were so many subtle differences both in the things I heard and the way I expressed myself. It definitely wasn’t an easy transition!” For Susan, growing up in Hamilton, New Zealand, life was quite pleasant. Her parents valued a good education with rich musical opportunities. Susan enthusiastically started lessons on the recorder at age 6 and the following year, started learning piano. When she was 10 years old, she also started on the violin, and continued lessons in both piano and violin until she completed high school.
It turned out to be a pivotal trip. The Choir toured several places including Vancouver. Susan and Peter loved it here, and Peter actually interviewed for a job while on the trip. In 1990, they moved to Vancouver so Susan could commence Ph.D. studies at UBC in Musicology. After receiving her permanent residency, she started teaching piano in the Point Grey area, teaching as many as 35 students weekly while working on her Ph.D! Eventually the pursuit of a Ph.D. was overtaken by the desire for a family, and Susan and Peter moved to Burnaby, where they had two daughters. Susan

continued teaching piano and has done so to this day! As her children moved out of toddler stage, she researched programs that would provide music and piano education for younger children and became a Music for Young Children teacher in 2001. She is a big believer in teaching music to children at a young age. She says, “I really believe that MYC is one of the best ways to introduce younger children, in a fun way, to music and piano.” At the same time, Susan started working as a music teacher in the Coquitlam School District and has done so now for many years. Her involvement in several schools in that District has always involved choir direction, and afforded her unique opportunities to lead choirs. One was at the Olympic Torch Ceremony at Mackin Park in 2010, and another was with the Coastal Sound Music Academy in 2019, when she was offered the chance to lead a massed choir in a Mauri song from New Zealand. For almost the entire three decades she has lived in Vancouver, Susan has also served as a soprano soloist in two churches: Spirit of Life Lutheran Church and St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church. The latter involvement gave her the unique opportunity to go on a European Tour with the Pacific Singers, and led to her creating her own CD, Memories of Prague.

Susan’s wide-ranging experience in music has provided a rich heritage to pass on to her students throughout the years. Perhaps most of all, her unique musical background from New Zealand and her experience as an immigrant has shaped who she is as a teacher. “I understand people who have immigrated to Canada,” she says. “I spend a lot of time inviting them into a music experience and making them feel welcome, because I know how hard it is.” Clearly, this Burnaby music teacher is a great reflection of our immigrant heritage, and the attitude we all should have as we welcome new immigrants to Canada!
At Music for Young Children®, we encourage children to be more creative, inventive, imaginative and expressive through our keyboard-based music education program. We provide them with a unique set of skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. Whether it’s improving their grades, enhancing coordination skills for their athletic activities, or to learn the rewarding skill of playing the piano; MYC® is the first key to getting them there.

We’re proud to celebrate 50 years with Burnaby fam Burnaby Family Life launched its first family program in 1971. As early as 1974, BFL had introduced multiple adult and pre-school programs, and evening groups for parents of pre-schoolers, school-aged children and teens. Many of our early and youngest clients are now parents, grandparents, and even great grand-parents. 50 years of learning and growing BFL has a culture of continuous adjustments of its education and counselling services to meet the changing needs of our community’s individuals and families. In the past year, our team of 88 professionals delivered almost 195,00 hours of life-changing programs and essential services to nearly 3,000 individuals. Our staff speak 39 languages and deliver programs and services at more than 12 locations across the city. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we also take stock of our achievements: · We operate three licensed childcares, pre-school and after school care, numerous child-minding programs, and a summer camp. · We offer more than 20 parenting and family programs, along with pre- and post-natal programs for moms with at-risk pregnancies. · Our counsellors and case workers extend caring support to women and children who have experienced abuse and to vulnerable newcomers who are settling in the Canadian culture. Our work contributes to the happiness and sense of belonging of everyone in our community by helping individuals reach their potential.
50 years, thanks to you We have deep roots in Burnaby. We are grateful to our volunteers, funders, donors, sponsors, Board of Directors and friends for their ongoing encouragement and generosity. Their contributions nourish our work.
Is BFL part of YOUR family history? If we are part of your family history, please share your memories with us. We welcome photos and stories to include in our year-long celebration coverage in our newsletter, and on our website and social media.
How can you help celebrate our 50th anniversary? • Become a monthly or one-time donor in support of our work with Burnaby families. Visit our website for details. • Create a Facebook fundraiser for Burnaby Family Life in honour of your birthday. Donors will receive a tax receipt.

POWER3 ACADEMY HELPING PEOPLE GET FIT IN SAFE ENVIRONMENT AT EDMONDS AREA MARTIAL ARTS GYM
A New Year brings the unique opportunity to “start over”! Whether that’s a new diet, new goals or ambitions, January seems to bring the desire for new beginnings. One of the most common New Year’s resolutions involves fitness, and with that comes the often dreary struggle to get to the gym or follow an exercise regime. Power3 Academy on Edmonds Street in South Burnaby is trying to change people’s experience with fitness by encouraging them toward martial arts. Commonly associated with the UFC and MMA fighting, Power3 prefers to focus their martial arts training on health and wellness by developing the three core elements of mind, body and soul. Sensei Cesar Narita says the aim at Power3 is for each participant to enjoy a positive and flourishing environment. “Here you are part of a team, a family that will support you,” he states with enthusiasm. “We use the whole body to try help you shift to a better you. The fight is not really against another person, but against oneself to become a better person.” A range of different martial arts are practiced at Power3 Academy, including Kickboxing and Muay Thai, but what the gym is most noted for is Morganti Ju-Jitsu. Narita, a champion 3rd degree Black Belt, brought this unique martial arts tradition to Canada in 2004. He says that the Academy is the only gym in North America to follow Morganti JuJitsu, which was developed in Brazil and incorporates ground fighting, throwing techniques and stand up fighting. Narita certainly appreciates the exercise programs that take place in standard gyms. However, he suggests that training in martial arts allows a person to not only get fit, but also have
some abilities that can be used in real life situations, such as self defence. Of course, there are other real life benefits like weight loss, decrease of stress and increase of confidence that their martial arts students experience. Power 3 Academy is attempting to tackle the COVID pandemic by encouraging people to “come and flatten your holiday and quarantine curve.” While the health crisis has forced many gyms to adjust their practices and set-up, Power3 Academy is leading the way by following the highest level of safety protocols. Of course, they are not currently engaging in oneon-one grappling and in fact, do not allow physical contact of any kind between students. In order to allow their students to practice individual techniques, the Academy has set up partitions to provide “safe zones” for training. They also do disinfectant cleaning between classes and actually use True HEPA Air Purifiers for air particle removal. There are numerous safety guidelines that are followed, and the Academy encourages other martial arts gyms to follow all the health protocols to ensure the protection of all martial arts.
After seeing the Power3 facility and meeting Sensei Cesar Narita, there’s no question that this martial arts gym would provide an outstanding opportunity for a new start on fitness in this New Year!

FINDING DEMENTIA SUPPORT IN A CAFÉ AND CHOIR BURNABY SENIORS OUTREACH SOCIETY OFFERING PROGRAMS TO HELP PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH THE EFFECTS OF DEMENTIA By Gary Wilson
As someone who has experienced the effects of dementia in my own family, I know firsthand how devastating it can be, not only for the individual who is enduring it, but the family who love them. For some 12 years before her passing in 2017, we saw a steady decline in my mom’s memory and thinking, eventually affecting her social abilities, and then even her physical functions.
opportunities to meet together in a safe, nonjudgmental environment with skilled facilitators and volunteers. Currently taking place as a Virtual Café via Zoom, participants socialize with one another, engage with guest speakers and enjoy music provided by a Certified Music Therapist. The Café takes place on the second Thursday of each month from 1:00 to 2:30 pm.
It was painful in many ways, but one of the things I saw that brought a great joy to me as I saw her decline, was the effect that music had upon her. My mom was undoubtedly the least musical person in our family, but even when she no longer remembered our names, she still seemed to know all the songs of the past. So when I learned that here in Burnaby, there are programs focused on music to help other families suffering with dementia, I got excited. Over the past few years, people in our city who are struggling with dementia, along with their families, have been able to find some unique opportunities for support as they walk through this journey. In 2017, the City of Burnaby developed a Dementia Friendly Action Plan. With 2,800 people in the city living with dementia, the plan was to assist these individuals to stay active and maintain wellness during this difficult time in their lives. Burnaby Seniors Outreach Society, working with Music Therapy, helped to form two unique opportunities for people experiencing dementia and memory loss. In January of 2019, they established the Dementia Friendly Café. This monthly gathering provided
The participants truly enjoy their time, even in the Virtual Café! One family member commented, “You make them feel so warm, welcomed and included. I’m hoping that they continue as I can see how much they enjoy it. We were all singing the Na Na Goodbye part long after we turned off Zoom. Thanks for making us feel so valued in the group.”

The positive results of seeing 20-40 participants at the Café prompted organizers to start a Choir, so “The New Dementians” was formed in November, 2019. and more specifically of singing and being together.” Those who have joined the Choir express great enjoyment from their participation. “We’ve become a family, all singing here,” said one member. “And it’s okay to cry and laugh together.” Another participant said, “For me, the choir reminds me that I am not alone in any of the problems that I have been having due to COVID-19. Through singing songs and communing with each other, we are able to carry each other’s burdens.” “’The New Dementians’ is primarily open to anyone living in Burnaby who identifies as having dementia or memory loss, and their care partners,” says Hatch. “Additionally, we welcome youth to join us, in order to help support intergenerational aspects of our community.”
“Leading ‘The New Dementians’ is a personal and professional pride and pleasure,” Hatch explains. “As someone with a lifetime of choral experience coupled with formal training to become a certified music therapist, I know the healing potential of music,
