Greetings from Mayor Wayne Baldwin On behalf of the City of White Rock, we congratulate you on launching What’s On Magazine, South Surrey White Rock. A close-knit community like ours will surely benefit from a magazine which focuses on happenings in around town. The White Rock South Surrey area is vibrant and always has many festivals and events going on. As Mayor, I recognize the importance of supporting all things local, and What’s On Magazine provides a platform for local businesses to gain publicity and for local events to attract people to share in their celebrations. PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Hello Fall

Fall is one of the four primary seasons on Earth, and is the transition from Summer into Winter. The leaves change from green to red, to orange, to yellow, and finally to brown before falling. In fall, also known by many as Autumn, there is less sunlight and the days become shorter. As we set our clocks back in time, our minds look forward with excitement into the future! Canadians of all cultures and backgrounds look to Fall to bring many different holidays, and more time together as a family. Loving the season of autumn as I do, I think about all the changes and beauty this season brings with it. It is a royal time of year, with flaming magical colors and aromatic smells of pumpkin spice and fresh rain in the atmosphere.

me the opportunity to bring a one stop solution for planning your activities with your families and love ones. Have you ever felt as though there is nothing to do? Well let me tell you, there is so many amazing events and opportunities to take part in, if only we knew where to look. This is why your very own What’s On! Community Magazine will be packed full of events and activities, tailored locally to your area. Are you ready to come celebrate the seasons with us? We hope to see you there!

FROM ONE BUSINESS TO ANOTHER... GET THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY TO MAXIMIZE YOUR SALES. What’s wrong with Google & media ads? They are expensive & it’s difficult to measure their cost effectiveness. A new technology allows businesses to: • get people’s attention on the street or mall about its great deals, promotions & events very inexpensively & • effectively measure its results. It is called “GO Proximity Marketing”. It results in every potential customer receiving a notification 24/7 from your business on their Android phone that is bluetooth enabled when they drive or walk within 100 yards of one of your “GO” beacons.

Interested in learning more? Contact sales rep Linda Thibault at:

www.GoSales.store lindathibault1@icloud.com 778 232 8357

Each of your messages can be up to 40 characters plus an internet link. Anyone who receives your notification can forward it to any social media site or to friends. These beacons are compliant with anti-spam laws and are now being offered in 192 countries. GO beacons launched in Canada in May, 2017. We are offering an introductory monthly fee for a limited time for its beacons - $25 for 1, $49 for 3, $99 for 8 & further discounts for larger orders. A Tour of the South Surrey Jungle

DRAGONS, SNAKES, AND SCORPIONS… OH MY! This has been the reaction of many visitors to the Urban Safari Rescue Society, located in South Surrey, BC. And indeed, it is quite an adventure! Established in 2007 by Gary Oliver, the organization seeks to rescue, care for, and educate the public about the needs of exotic animals across Canada. Oliver and his team work year-round to create a home for approximately 350 different critters not native to our Canadian climate. After all, no sun-loving gecko wants our rainy days! Being a charitable organization, sometimes raising funds can be a daunting task. That said, this doesn’t stop Urban Safari from getting out into the community. Currently they sponsor several programs such as summer camps, public tours, demonstrations in schools, libraries, and public institutions, and “Junior Zookeeper” training courses for the young animal enthusiast. Speaking of animal lovers, Urban Safari also hosts private sessions, including birthdays, workplace events, and other gatherings. What a fantastic way to surprise your boss at the next staff meeting! The South Surrey and White Rock communities showed their support during an open house held on August 20th, 2017 at the Urban Safari centre. The event was a huge success, with over 2000 people attending, during which, the latest masterpiece of famous artist Paul Archer was revealed on the wall of the USRS building. Recognized for his airbrush art, Archer has worked his magic on thousands of buildings worldwide. Practicing for over 27 years, he has created backdrops for famous musicians and groups such as Lady Gaga, Ozzy Osbourne, and Black Sabbath. And indeed, the mural is astounding! Done in just two days, the gigantic frog, and lizards call out to anyone who happens to be driving by. Isn’t it wonderful what people will do for the good of others? But don’t worry, you don’t need to be a professional artist to make an impact in the lives of these animals. Urban Safari has many ways in which you can donate, including sponsoring an animal. Though be warned: the cuteness of these critters is irresistible! Feel like getting involved? Stop by the Urban Safari Rescue Society building for a tour, or visit their Facebook page, Instagram, and website at: http://www.urbansafari.ca, Instagram: Urbansafarirescue, Facebook: facebook.com/urbansafarirescuesociety

Am I

Covered?

We live in a country where social benefits are strong – but are we really covered?

Health Care

What to Do?

As citizens of BC we pay monthly premiums for coverage with the BC Medical Services Plan. It covers hospital costs, including drugs, lab tests and doctor’s fees, while in the hospital as well as visits to your personal doctor outside of the hospital. It does not cover costs outside of the hospital, like ambulance, chiropractors, physiotherapists and CPAP machines (assisted breathing devices). Nor does it cover prescription drugs.

For those not covered by an employer’s group insurance plan, look for a one person (one family) private health & dental plan. In the current market, for non-medical guaranteed coverage, the Edge Benefits plan is recommended. It is one of the best, least expensive health & dental plans in the market – and has the added benefit of being able to choose to add on the upgrades to the plan that you need (drugs, health, dental). It also includes as a bonus an annual travel insurance plan that provides up to 15 days of travel per person per year for a benefit total of $1million per person – so even your day trips down to Seattle for shopping are covered as well as your vacations in Mexico! And there are no medical questions or requirements to qualify for the Base plan – it is guaranteed coverage.

In BC we do have help with prescription drugs through a separate plan called Pharmacare that is paid for by our taxes. It pays for a family’s annual prescription drug bills – after a deductible that is set at 3% of your combined (spouse’s) income

So why do you still have Medical Expenses? Drugs – the Pharmacare deductible can be as high as $1,000 or higher for a family – or even higher if you enjoy a higher income. And you don’t have a choice in paying for your drugs! Chiropractors and physiotherapists – these medical therapists can charge up to $90 per visit or more, all coming out of your pocket. Casts for broken bones are now done in fiberglass and are an additional $200 cost to the patient – even though they are set in the hospital. And ambulances are not cheap – especially air ambulances – and are not paid for by the province! Social benefits do not cover all medical expenses.

So when you have this extra coverage - yes you are covered!

Q

Tis the season of cold’s, flus and infections … oh my! What can I do to prevent the Winter bugs?

The common cold is the world’s most widespread viral infection, with most adults catching two to four colds annually, and children getting six to eight colds each year. Re-infections over the Fall and Winter seasons are prevalent because of the wide variety of cold-causing viruses. One of more than 100 different viruses could be the culprit behind a cold. There are many ways to use medicinal herbs to enhance immunological vitality. Herbal medicine is ecological medicine. It is based on an ecological relationship that has evolved through geological time. Of course, there will be remedies that directly address the ecological process of human immunity. Phytotherapeutic immune system support is a good example of where traditional knowledge is being confirmed by modern pharmacology. A growing number of remedies are being shown have marked immunological effects in both the laboratory and the clinic. Some are stimulants to immunity but most can best be described as modulators that are they enable the body’s natural responses to be more flexible in the face of disease. The Role of Herbs in the Immune System Immuno-stimulants: Lead to a nonspecific stimulation of the immunological defense system. Nonspecific immunostimulants do not affect memory cells and since their pharmacological efficacy fades comparatively quickly, they should be administered in intervals. An example would be Echinacea. Immuno-modulation or Immune Regulators: These herbs stimulate T-suppressor cells and thereby reduce immune resistance. An example would be Astragulus. Garlic supplements have shown promise in preventing and treating colds and improving overall immune function. Taking garlic supplements year-round may offer you the best protection. As with any new nutritional supplement, speak with your doctor or healthcare

practitioner before you start taking it. A UK clinical trial conducted in 2001 examined how well a supplement containing allicin, a key garlic ingredient, prevents colds. More than 140 volunteers participated for 12 weeks. The group taking the allicin supplement caught 24 colds; the placebo group caught 65. Volunteers in the placebo group were more likely to catch more than one cold during the study period, and they also had longer lasting cold symptoms. In short, volunteers taking the garlic supplement were less likely to get a cold, and they recovered more quickly if infected. They also showed reduced severity of symptoms like sneezing, coughing and runny nose. In a 2012 study, aged garlic extract (AGE) reduced the severity of cold and flu symptoms. The study did not find that AGE reduced the incidence of colds and flu’s; however, those who took AGE missed fewer days of work and school due to illness. Plus, their bodies produced more immune cells. WHY DO I NEED INSURANCE FOR MY CHILD? Are you aware that the expenses from most accidents exceed the benefits provided by your government and group insurance plans? Even the most minor accident can result in major financial responsibilities and some expenses may not even be insured under your government and group insurance policies. The result: you, the parent/guardian, become financially responsible. To help identify the advantages of a Student Accident Plan, take a moment to review the following scenarios to compare a typical group insurance plan with the Student Accident Plan. These stories are real incidents where a Student Accident Plan made a large impact on each family. They could have had severe financial strain; instead, these families were protected with a Student Accident Plan.

Getting to Know You Interview with White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin and wife Jane By April Lewis

“We feel really blessed to live in this community.” Words of gratitude from White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin and his wife of 48 years, Jane, who moved to White Rock 34 years ago and have never looked back. Relocating from North Vancouver so that Wayne could take on a new job at the City of White Rock as the Chief Administrative Officer, Jane recalls crying for months as she made the adjustment. “They only had one traffic light back then,” she recalls with a smile. She soon changed her mind as she realized that White Rock was a wonderful place to raise their family and get involved in the community. (The Baldwins have three married children and nine grandkids who also live in the White Rock South Surrey area). And get involved they did. Apart from his full-time job at the City, Wayne was an active member in Rotary and still is. He has coached soccer, baseball, softball and track and loves it when he meets a child he once coached who is now grown with kids of their own. Wayne was responsible for the creation of the White Rock promenade on the waterfront which is the jewel in White Rock’s crown.

small community to remain autonomous is really special.” He was delighted to see people in attendance at the April 2017 celebration who were there in April 1957! When asked what he loves most about living in White Rock, he is quick to say, “the geography and the climate” but goes on to stress that “it is the sense of community” he reveres the most. His supportive wife Jane would certainly agree. As a retired teacher, she is active in the community in her own right. She is an Executive member of the local chapter of CARP (formerly Canadian Association of Retired Persons) – A New Vision of Aging for Canada – because she believes “CARP does magic to support the seniors in our community and I want to be a part of it.” She is also involved with the New Bridge Academy, a Mandarin/ English school, as she “believes in cultural integration.” And she has set up a program called “Master Artists in the Library” where community artists come together. They both love the small town feeling of living in White Rock which is such a supportive and friendly place to live. Wayne is quick to add, “White Rock is a family and community-oriented city where you can thrive and build connections and have a great life”. As the holiday season approaches, Mayor Baldwin and Jane welcome the readers of What’s On! White Rock South Surrey to their beautiful city and wish everyone a heartfelt Merry Christmas.

Retirement didn’t last long as he was asked to run for City Council in 2011 and has been the Mayor since then. As White Rock celebrates its 60th birthday this year, Wayne feels “for a

To understand how your coverage would respond to a claim, it is important to understand what a pre-existing condition is and how it relates to your medical history. The following discussion outlines what a pre-existing condition is, how it relates to a travel insurance policy, common misconceptions, and why a licensed broker is your best resource when purchasing a travel insurance policy. What is a Pre-Existing Condition? A Pre-Existing Condition* is a medical condition for which treatment has been received or taken or which exhibited symptoms, before the policy start date and within the period specified, and includes a medically recognized complication or recurrence of a medical condition. For example, if a policy has a stability period of 90 days and during those 90 days the insured is diagnosed and treated for high blood pressure, this condition would be excluded during the upcoming trip, as it was not stable and controlled for the 90 days prior to the departure date. In short, if you’ve visited the doctor during the stability period, be sure to tell your insurance broker and provide details about the visit. Stable and Controlled* means the medical condition is not worsening and there has been no alteration in any medication for the condition or its usage or dosage, nor any treatment, prescribed or recommended by a physician or received within the period specified in the policy, before the policy start date. In other words, if the insured has had a change in medication (new prescription, increase/decrease or discontinuation), experienced a new medical condition, had an existing condition recur, or has any pending test or treatments, the associated condition would be not be considered stable and controlled under the policy and therefore not covered under the given policy. *These are typical definitions for Travelance policies and in this blog post are used for illustrative purposes only. Definitions and coverages vary by provider. Please read policy wordings carefully for details. Why is it important to understand the definition of pre-existing condition as it relates to your policy? Policies that provide coverage for pre-existing conditions may require a condition to be stable and controlled for a specified period before the insured’s departure date for the coverage to be available. Check with a licensed insurance broker for the stability periods outlined in your policy.

Adjustment to Medication: Another common misconception is that when a person’s health improves, they will be covered under a travel insurance policy. This may not be the case. For example, if a physician changes the dosage of a prescribed medication during the stability period, the condition associated with that medication is no longer stable and controlled. Therefore, coverage for that condition will not be available. Changes in dosage include an increase, a decrease, the prescription of a new medication, and even discontinuation of a medication. Have a thorough and honest discussion with your licensed insurance broker regarding your medical history before you purchase emergency medical travel insurance. Be sure to disclose all of your medical conditions, read the policy wording, and ask your broker questions. Please note, your broker is not a medical professional. If you are not sure about your medical history or medical condition(s), speak to your doctor. Don’t be Afraid to Ask Your Broker Questions Your broker is your best resource when it comes to understanding policy benefits, definitions, exclusions, limitations, terms, and conditions. They have the experience and knowledge to guide you through your travel insurance policy. If there is something in your policy you don’t understand, don’t hesitate to ask your broker or contact the insurance company. Having the right insurance plan will help you to travel with better peace of mind. If you have any pre-existing conditions, be sure to mention them to your broker so they can help you find a policy that meets your needs. What are some common misconceptions about travel insurance and pre-existing conditions? Physician’s Approval: It is a common misconception that if a doctor approves a patient’s travel plans the patient will be covered under a travel insurance policy. Unfortunately, a physician’s approval to travel does not necessarily mean coverage for a medical condition will be provided under the terms and conditions of a given travel insurance policy.

The South Surrey & White Rock Chamber of Commerce and Canadian Chamber welcome revised tax reforms and lower small business tax rate but remain concerned White Rock, BC, October 16, 2017 — The SSWR Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce welcome the government’s plans to revise its proposed tax reforms and to reduce the small business tax rate as a result of the comments and concerns expressed through the national #ProtectGrowth campaign and in consultations. “Government makes a number of positive changes to the tax form,” said Cliff Annable, Executive Director. As Canadians celebrate Small Business Week, Chamber representatives congratulate the thousands of businesspeople who joined the mobilization and made their voices heard on this important issue affecting Canadian workers and employers. The SSWR Chamber also noted the Minister’s call for further input from Canadian businesses, and intends to continue providing a voice to ensure the tax system is simpler and less of a burden on Canada’s competitiveness. “It is always more productive when government and business work together. We can only hope the government will listen as we provide advice on those areas where more remains to be done, and that they will propose concrete data to back up their claims. The Canadian Chamber will be working with the SSWR Chamber and other chambers across the country for suggestions on reforms that can improve the competitiveness of Canada’s tax system. Lowering the small business tax rate is one such measure, but there is still much room for improvement,” Mr. Beatty said. “We must ensure that Canada, and with it South Surrey and White Rock, remain attractive places to do business. Although there is a great deal of work to be done, today’s announcement is a positive first step, but we expect more and we will be vigilant on the next steps,” he concluded. -The South Surrey & White Rock Chamber of Commerce is a communityminded business organization dedicated to promoting business and economic growth on the peninsula. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is the vital connection between business and the federal government. It helps shape public policy and decision-making to the benefit of businesses, communities and families across Canada with a network of over 450 chambers of commerce and boards of trade, representing 200,000 businesses of all sizes in all sectors of the economy and in all regions.
