Are you ready? Winter is coming. But before winter comes, we still have pumpkins, Halloween, candies and fireworks. Check out the October events on page 6.

Richmond PUBLISHER’S NOTE

I am eagerly anticipating the Winter markets and Christmas Fairs to look for those unique gifts. I will be going to those November events on page 10 to do just that. We remember the sacrifice and courage of those who fought for our freedom. The annual Remembrance Day parade, ceremonies and reception will be on November 11. December is the spirit of the holidays. Season of giving to others, Kindness to All and Remembering our love ones. December is cold but our heart is warm. Spend some time out of the house and enjoy the holiday events listed on page 18. Every year, I tell myself that I’m going to bake for my friends and neighbours. I am yet to achieve that. Maybe I will start small and try the Apple Strudel recipe on page 24. If the holiday gets too stressful for me, I’m going to play the Funpage on page 16 and the Scavenger Hunt on page 22. Relax and enjoy the holidays! I wish my readers, friends and family Happy Holidays 2019 and Happy New Year 2020! Till Next year

How To Improve Your Credit Score Credit scores are like report cards for grown-ups. The score you get ranges from 300 to 900. Your score indicates your creditworthiness to potential lenders, banks, landlords, insurance companies, and even to some employers. The higher your score the better. 1. GET A COPY OF YOUR CREDIT REPORT Make an inquiry once a year, twice is much better. If you are planning on purchasing anything that requires a credit check, keep track of your credit. This is something that is 100% in your control. As a consumer you have ability to make a soft/consumer inquiry to Equifax as many times as you want without it affecting your score. Here is a link to Equifax. If something doesn’t look right, contact the creditor immediately. Don’t wait to report an incorrect or fraudulent transaction. Is there an outstanding collection? If so, deal with it immediately, and by that I mean pay it. Then argue to get your money back. Do not leave this on your credit report hoping that it will disappear. No matter what, the collection will not be removed until it’s paid unless taken to litigation. Once dealt with, it will still take months to recover the points lost and 6 years to fall off your credit report.

2. NEVER MISS A MINIMUM PAYMENT Because this attributes to 35% of your overall score, delinquencies have the biggest negative effect on your credit score. If you have overdue bills, make the necessary arrangements with your creditors. They would much rather work with you than file collections against you. If you can’t pay it all back, it’s better to pay some.

3. DON’T CLOSE UNUSED CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT Got a credit card that you have had ten years and hardly use? Keep it. It takes 12 years of history with the same specific card in good standing to crack 800 and enter that top 2% tier of quality credit. Cancelling a card can actually lower your score. Keep the old cards and only use them occasionally so the issuer doesn’t

stop reporting your information to the credit bureaus. Having a long credit history helps increase your score. Don’t jump around to credit providers. Most ‘large’ providers have several different products. There is likely one that will fit your needs.

4. NEVER MAX OUT YOUR CREDIT CARDS A good rule of thumb when considering building your credit is to keep the balance at or below 30% of the limit. Furthermore, a balance of 50% of the limit will maintain existing levels and over 75% will start to decrease it. NEVER exceed the limit, by even a $1.

5. DON’T LOOK FOR MORE CREDIT Don’t shop around for credit or open several credit accounts in a short period of time. It raises alarms at credit bureaus and financial institutions, especially when you don’t have a longÐestablished credit history. Work with your existing creditors, as there is more relevant history. They are more likely to work with you, especially if you are looking to resolve some credit hardship(s). Always ensure you give your permission before allowing a credit check.

6. RULE OF 2 Ideally, you want to have 2 sources of credit solely in your own name for a minimum of 2 years with at least a $2,500 credit limit. This would be either 2 credit cards or one credit card and a line of credit. Ensure this is in addition to any joint accounts. Joint credit is only reported to the primary credit holders credit bureau and will not have any positive effect on the co-account holder.

Apple Strudel

A Festive Favourite

Ingredients 6 cups / 750g /1lb 10oz Bramley apples, peeled, cored, quartered and sliced 1½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ unwaxed lemon, zest only 2 tsp lemon juice 100g/3½oz golden caster/baking sugar 2/3 cups / 75g / 2½oz raisins 1/2 cup / 95g / 3½oz butter 1/3cup / 40g / 1½oz white breadcrumbs 6 large sheets filo pastry 1 tbsp icing sugar

24

Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 40-45 mins Serves: 6-8

Method Preheat the oven to 375F / Gas 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Mix the quartered apples with the cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 1/8 cup / 20g / ¾oz butter and fry the breadcrumbs until goldenbrown, then add these to the apple mixture. Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet of the filo and brush with some of the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all the filo. Layering the pastry with the melted butter helps to create flaky layers. Place the filling along the length of the pastry along one side about 1 inch / 2-3cm from the edge. Using the tea-towel to help you, roll the pastry up to enclose the filling. Tuck the ends in and roll the strudel seam-side down onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden-brown. Leave to cool to room temperature and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or custard.

CHILI VODKA “I love to go to farmers market and night markets to see what Local products are out there. I will try or buy the product. This one caught my fancy. I tried Chili Vodka by Sons of Vancouver and I was hooked. It was spicy, delicious and mixed well with pineapple juice or Caesar mix.” Voted Best Favored Vodka 2016 and 2017 at the BC Distilled Craft Spirit Festival and People's choice in 2016.

FORBIDDEN SPICY PINEAPPLE

CHILI VODKA by Sons of Vancouver:

è 1oz Spicy Chili Vodka è 4oz Pineapple Juice è Mint

“If you're adventurous enough to pick up this bottle, we commend you. Because this isn't just another boring, flavourless vodka hiding behind frosted glass, this is a BC Craft vodka infused with scovilles upon scovilles of fresh bird’s eye chilies. It's not for babies.”

Take your favorite glass, preferably an absurd tiki mug, and fill with Ice. Add 1oz of Spicy Chili Vodka and 4oz of the best Pineapple juice money can buy. Garnish with a sprig of mint, and enjoy. Taste of Thailand, the sweetness of the pineapple cuts the spice and leaves you with a pleasurable tingle.

Sons of Vancouver is a really, really small batch distillery on Vancouver’s North Shore. James and Richard are the guys behind the curtain, and they have created a selection of dynamic BC spirits using really, really local grains. Their Vodka, Amaretto, and Chili Vodka are all produced with a base of BC wheat, BC malted barley and Champagne yeast. Tasting room are open Fridays 5-9pm and Saturday 1-9pm. Samples always free. 1431 Crown St, North Vancouver, BC.

Fill the glass with ice and add 1oz Chili Vodka and 4oz Walter Caesar Mix. Add 2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce and a shake of the salt and/or pepper you used for the rim. Garnish and stir with a spicy bean and a lime wedge. Enjoy!

Thank you for supporting the Children’s Organ Transplant Society of BC and helping children who are waiting for an organ transplant, and those who have had a transplant. You are making a difference in the lives of people like nine-year old Logyn Booth. At the age of two, a disease began attacking his kidneys and stealing his life away. Over a six-year period, Logyn spent about half of that in hospital. In the end, his chance at survival was a kidney transplant, which he gratefully received last year.

Many families struggle financially while taking time off work to care for their sick children. We can help by offering hospital parking passes, food vouchers, and medications and vitamins not covered by insurance. Without the Children’s Organ Transplant Society, these children and their families would struggle more than they already do. Over the past year, we have helped more than 423 children and their families across BC. As donors and supporters, you don’t always get to see the impact you are making, but know that you’ve helped bring a smile to a young a person and eased the burden of a parent. Thank You! If you would like to support us further, Contact:

info@childrensots.org www.childrensots.org

“We now have so many happy, healthy days that I feel I have to pinch myself,” says Logyn’s mom, Kirstin. “We will be forever grateful to the donor’s family, who made the decision to donate their loved one’s organs, but I also want to thank the Children’s Organ Transplant Society, and the generosity of its donors, who have helped make this life-altering challenge easier.” Over the last year, we have been called upon to help more children and their families than in the 18-year history of our organization. A transplant is not a cure, as many children who receive a transplant suffer from complications and the effects of immunosuppression. Thanks to your support, we are able to jump in and help when called upon. Over the past year, we have provided feeding tube supplies and formula for those children failing to thrive, and arranged counselling services for some children and their families, and sadly we even supported a family by paying to fly a three-month old girl’s body back to her home after passing away while waiting for a liver transplant in Edmonton.
