When Angela approached me, asking if I would be interested in working for What’s On I was ecstatic. I was just wrapping up my artist residency with the City of Port Coquitlam and I knew it was the perfect opportunity to get to know the place I call home on an even more intimate level. My entire life I have thought of myself as a writer. I penned my first poem at age six. But only in the past two years have I finally shifted my view of writing from something I occasionally did as a hobby to accepting it as the Thing I Was Meant To Do. Those caps are there intentionally; my editor brain hurts a little allowing them, but the emphasis is necessary to show the weight I believe the statement holds. We’re talking passion. And anything less than full commitment to the craft at this point would inevitably leave me feeling less than a complete individual. I just wouldn’t be “write”. Which leads me to my philosophy – one I really worked at polishing when I gave myself over to the writing world.
Embrace life. Share stories. Build community. That’s who I am in my writing and who I am as a mother, wife, friend, volunteer, and resident. Those six words tell you everything you need to know about me, and are a touchstone for myself when I need a reminder. When I was presented with the chance to join the team at What’s On, it was as if my motto was coming to life. To be in a position that allows me to practise so much of what I love while still having the room to grow, learn, and explore has felt like a dream. To be given access to the lives of Port Coquitlam citizens, to comprehend the visions of local businesses, and to witness the drive behind Tri-Cities organizations has been a privilege. And to be able to help shape articles and tell the manyfaceted, evolving story of this city and its surrounding area is truly inspirational.
We welcome your article submissions. To make this a great community resource we encourage all to submit articles and non profit profiles relating to our community. Please note that all submissions will be edited and formatted. For information on the specific requirements please email Angela or Leah.

1 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 4 1/4 cups / 1 lb 5oz / 600g parsnips, cut into 1/2 inch cubes 1/2 tsp dried red chilli flakes, plus extra to serve 1 3/4 pints hot vegetable stock 1 3/4 cups / 200 ml / 7fl oz double cream *
Preheat the oven to 400 F / Gas 6. Heat the oil in a heavy-based pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and cubed parsnips and fry for 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally. When they are golden add the chilli flakes and fry for one more minute. Pour in the stock, stir and bring everything to a simmer. Cover with the lid and cook for 12–15 minutes, or until the parsnips are tender. Meanwhile, for the croutons, place the pieces of bread on a baking tray in a single layer and drizzle with the olive oil. Sprinkle over the cheese, and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 5–10 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove the soup from the heat and blitz with a stick blender until smooth. Return to the heat, stir in the cream and heat through gently. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve the soup topped with the croutons and a sprinkling of chilli flakes for a little more kick.
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the croutons 3 thick slices good bread, such as sourdough, cut into 1 inch pieces 1 tbsp olive oil 1/2 cup / 55g / 2 oz Gruyère cheese, finely grated * * To veganise just swap for your favourite vegan substitutes

BIG: STORIES ABOUT LIFE IN PLUS-SIZED BODIES On shelves January 31, 2020 Available now for pre-order through bookstores, or online via Indigo or Amazon
Pop culture stereotypes, shopping frustrations, fat jokes, and misconceptions about health are all ways society systemically rejects large bodies. BIG is a collection of personal and intimate experiences of plus size women, non-binary and trans people in a society obsessed with thinness. Revealing insights that are both funny and traumatic, surprising and challenging, familiar and unexpected, 26 writers explore themes as diverse as self-perception, body image, fashion, fat activism, food, sexuality, diet culture, motherhood and more. These stories offer a closer look at what it means to navigate a world designed to fit bodies of a certain size (sometimes literally) and, in turn, invites readers to ask questions about, and ultimately reconsider, our collective and individual obsession with women’s bodies. Contributors include Dr. Rohini Bannerjee, Amanda Scriver, Cassie Stocks, Jo Jefferson, Layla Cameron, Rabbit Richards, Sonja Boon, Simone Blais, Tracy Manrell and other writers locally and from across Canada, the US, and the UK.
Editor, Christina Myers, is an award-winning newspaper journalist turned freelance writer and editor. She holds degrees in journalism and psychology from TRU and UBC, respectively, and is an alumnus of the Writer’s Studio at SFU. “I can’t wait for people to read this. There are stories in here that are funny, triumphant, political, heartbreaking, and everything in between. It’s hard to imagine that a reader would not recognize themselves in some of these stories or learn something new from others.” —Christina Myers, editor of BIG “Accepting yourself at every size? That means rejecting all the whispered edicts of Eurowestern society and the out-loud abuse of strangers. That’s a BIG project. And one worth documenting. As a BIG girl myself, I NEEDED all the stories in this collection, from the sad-starkraging to the joyful-triumphant-funny.” —Ariel Gordon, editor of GUSH

2020
Georgia Nicols
Aries (March 21-April 19)
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
This year is your time of harvest when your cherished dreams can come true! (Your time of harvest happens only once every 30 years.) Not only that, lucky Jupiter will be at the top of your chart as well bringing you promotions, recognition and the increased respect of your peers. (This happens every 12 years.) Another unusual occurrence is your ruler Mars will be in your sign for the last six months of the year. (Normally Mars is in your sign for six weeks every two years.) Mars will boost your energy and amplify your sex drive! Mama Mia! It’s a “happening” year!
Two big things will happen this year: First, the support and help of partners and close friends will benefit you in your work; and second, Mars will be at the top of your chart for the last six months of this year, arousing your ambition as never before. Yes, you’ll be PowerPoint on steroids! Therefore, be open to working with others and accepting their advice and the benefit of their experience. In the last half of this year, Mars will make you more ambitious (and bossy) than you have been in years. Be aware of this. Remember Goethe’s advice: “Correction does much but encouragement does more.”
Taurus (April 20-May 20) A time of major success awaits you in 12 – 18 months, which means the degree to which you study, plan and work this year, will dictate the success you will have for several years ahead. This is why 2020 is the perfect year to take a course, or get training to improve your chances to make the most of your pending success in the near future. Many of you will travel this year, which is excellent because you will acquire more information and sophistication that makes you more knowledgeable, which is just the kind of edge you need to enter 2021. Get performance ready!
Gemini (May 21-June 20) This year you’re focused on money and shared wealth. Your debt or wealth might be tied up with the government or insurance issues, especially if you’re waiting for money. The good news is lucky, moneybags Jupiter will loosen the purse strings of others, including partners. You might inherit. You might get that loan or mortgage or raise money for your business. You might receive an increase in benefits because you have the luck! Money and financial support are coming your way, which is a major relief. Welcome this help from others!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) The year 2020 is fabulous for employment and health. You will have the best chance in over a decade to improve your job or get a better job or get rid of your evil boss. (If you were born late in your sign, this opportunity will begin late in 2020 and into 2021.) Meanwhile, from July 1 onward for the rest of the year, Mars will boost your energy and make you work hard exploring opportunities for work-related travel, publishing, the media, medicine and the law, plus higher education and enhanced relations with cultures. Expect success for yourself this year because you’ll be unstoppable!
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) This is a great year for a family vacation! Make plans for whatever your budget allows. You will also have abundant opportunities to enjoy sports events, movies, fun outings, picnics, musical events and family get-togethers because you will have greater joy through your family and your kids. Admittedly, quarrels about inheritances, shared property and shared responsibilities might arise. (It’s the classic year to expand your family through birth, adoption or marriage.) Meanwhile Mars will heighten your sex drive for the last half the year! (Be smart. Don’t risk a committed relationship for a mere bonbon.)

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
In 2020, your home and family scene will improve in a wonderful way. This will be one of the loveliest years for dealing with family and your private life! Working from home will be easier; you also might boost your wealth through real estate. You will improve where you live by moving to something bigger and better or by expanding and renovating where you are. Something will make you feel richer at home. Family members will be more generous to each other and will enjoy each other’s company more. Buy or build things that promote fun family times because you will not regret it.
This will be a happier year for relationships – personal and professional. Because you are striking out in a new direction, many of you will meet new people, especially romantic partners. However, after June, you will become more assertive about going after what you want professionally and personally. Obviously, this has some positive benefits. But it can also be off-putting to some. They might see you as bossy, opinionated and too keen to proselytize or sell your ideas. Don’t get hung up on your need to convince others to agree with you. Remember: No matter how loud you speak, there are none so deaf as those who are wearing headphones.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) This year is the perfect year to get advanced training in a field of study that is useful to you. You will increase your contacts and widen your range of networking. You will also write more. Many of you will change your jobs if you have not already done so recently. Your greatest strengths this year are your optimism and your positive belief in your future. This year, many will have a change of residence, which will increase your desire for stability and the kind of relationship you want. If you’re with someone who does not offer stability – that relationship might end. Alternatively, you will seek out people who offer the security you want.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Exciting news! You will get richer in 2020! Your earnings will increase or you will get richer through other ways -- land shared possessions or property. This is timely because you’re in the middle of a seven-year window of reinventing yourself. In the last half of this year, your energies will soar! You will be invigorated and willing to work long and hard hours. You will look like a winner! This year, many will have a change of residence, which will throw you into a state of flux. This will increase your desire for stability and how you use your new wealth.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) This year will you will be popular because it’s one of the best years in your life for friendships! Friends will help you this year. They will be supportive, and you’ll make new friends who will become valuable. Groups and clubs will play an important role. You might take on the role of leadership. Because you will be so involved with others this year, you will have more possibilities of new romance. For existing partnerships, jealousy is possible. But in the bigger picture, you will be happy because of your popularity -- and this happiness will reflect in a greater warmth and deeper bonds with friends and partners. It’s a very happy year for you.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Fabulous news! Lucky Jupiter is in Capricorn this year! This blessing comes only once every 12 years. (It next occurs in 2032.) Since this advantage comes to you only three or four times in your adult productive career, it’s something to take seriously. People and resources will be drawn to you this year, almost as if you are a lucky magnet. Personally, you will feel more confident and secure about yourself. By nature, you are cautious, but this year you have Lady Luck on your shoulder. Go after what you want and take a chance. (It’s also important to know that in 2021 you will become richer!) It’s time to believe in yourself!

A FOUNDATION OF TRUST By Jennifer Pownall We lost my mother-in-law, Peggy, at the beginning of October to a series of strokes that took place over a period of less than twelve weeks. She was admitted to Eagle Ridge Hospital after a fall and was initially given a pacemaker to treat a severely low heart rate, but she immediately showed signs of confusion beyond what her prognosis or early stage Alzheimer’s should have suggested. Delirium was suspected and we and the hospital staff rallied to support her physically, mentally, and emotionally, doing our best to encourage healing and engagement while she got better. But better never came. Instead, the incremental decline we had steeled ourselves for upon her diagnosis of dementia two years prior, began to manifest at a rapid pace. Often her grasp on time was fuzzy and she generally thought things were taking place at least a couple decades in the past. Occasionally she did not recognize us. Eventually, she began to hallucinate. Multiple strokes had slowly affected different parts of her brain, and – in the end – all we could do was hold her hands and tell her we loved her. But, still, I am grateful. The outstanding degree of care she (and we) received from the team at Eagle Ridge speaks to the deep commitment and compassion every staff member exemplifies. The respect, friendliness, and professionalism were simply overtures
to the real level of consideration they provided. During Peggy’s time there, they got to know us – they asked about our days and played with our son. The nurses offered hugs when our tears wouldn’t stop. The doctors encouraged us to take care of ourselves. The social workers counselled us on how to talk to our three-yearold when we knew Peggy didn’t have much time left. Grateful. During a time of great grief, it is the word I am left with when I think of all Eagle Ridge gave to my family. The Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation is in the process of raising $5 Million to support the expansion of the Emergency, Cardiology, and Community Outpatient Services Departments. One in two residents living in the Tri-Cities, Anmore, and Belcarra are touched by the care at ERH every year, and while the health care team does an outstanding job, they are working in an undersized, overcrowded space originally designed to service less than half of the patients it currently sees. The staff at Eagle Ridge is already extraordinary, but the expansion will transform what they do in our growing community by helping ensure they have the space needed to continue that level of compassionate, exceptional health care. Please visit erhf.ca/emergency to donate today and invest in the legendary care of tomorrow.

I AM SOMEONE IS ALWAYS SOMEWHERE DOING SOMETHING. By Jennifer Pownall When February rolls around, a lot of people find themselves thinking about love. For some it’s the paper hearts of Valentine’s that bring a smile to their faces, and for others it might be the fun outings often associated with Family Day that cause their eyes to shine a little brighter. But for too many, the most meaningful events – the one that stay with them year round – are those developed in support of antibullying campaigns. I Am Someone, a leader in promoting the end of bullying throughout the Tri-Cities and beyond, is working hard to ensure the second month of the year is not the only one in which their message is heard. The society’s reach is vast and its mission “to educate and empower individuals, businesses, and communities to be the effective change to end the hurt of bullying through support and technology” is clearly the driving force behind its impact as a resource, educator, and innovator in the fight against aggressive behaviours such as teasing, hitting, and spreading rumors. One of the most significant tools British Columbian youth have in the battle against bullying is because I Am Someone partnered with bc211 to allow kids and teens to send anonymous texts to 211. This empowering program allows youth to access information, options, and support when they want or need it. While I Am Someone targets youth in most of their initiatives, they have noticed a new trend as businesses are now incorporating anti-bullying into their policies
and workplace culture. Phoenix Truck & Crane, for example, a company who has long supported the organization’s efforts, has taken its message to heart. “Respecting each other is the foundation for a safe and healthy work environment,” says Lora Covinha, President and General Manager. “At Phoenix, we invest time and resources on educating our personnel about harassment in the workplace, and we have no tolerance for bullying and discrimination.” Even in the off-hours, the work is still being done. I Am Someone board member and owner of Mpowerlives, Michelle Tremblay, is working with schools and speaking to kids about mindfulness, social-emotional learning, and empowerment. Creating opportunities for change to happen at the core builds strength and resilience: powerful allies should one encounter bullying. And for those who simply crave the love February seems to embody, the CKNW Kids Fund has organized its annual Pink Shirt Day for the 26th. Be sure to watch for I Am Someone representatives at the local West Coast Express and Skytrain Stations. They will be out promoting this important movement and selling buttons in support of it for just $2. What better way to stand as an agent of love than to stand up against bullying?
Let’s Talk... Or Sing! By Jennifer Pownall
Bell Let’s Talk Day has become an important event across Canada since its inception a decade ago. On Januar y 29, 2020 people across the countr y will once again come together to talk, text, and engage with social media platforms to reduce stigmas and raise funds for mental health. Keep an eye out in our community for members of the New View Society, who will be handing out stickers and working to raise awareness as they take part in this important conversation at the Waves on Shaughnessy Street from 8:30am to 3:00pm. And if talking isn’t your style, why not tr y music? Music listening and therapy have been used to help people with a variety of mental illnesses, and the Canadian Association of Music Therapists notes that such intervention techniques can “ facilitate increased openness to discussion and provide motivation to engaging in social activity ”. It can also bring people together for a common goal. The New View Society, whose valuable work supports individuals with mental health challenges, will soon be
the beneficiaries of an amazing upcoming musical showcase that exemplifies such a gathering. Just Singin’ Round will be hosted by Synergy Collective and held at the Vancouver Rowing Club in Stanley Park on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Single tickets are just $35 while tables for groups of ten people range from $350 to $1000. The cost includes transportation via a bus from Port Coquitlam to the Rowing Club and back, a delicious dinner prepared by Emelle’s Catering, and a magical evening which showcases some of the most talented songwriters and singers in the countr y. Events put together by Synergy Collective regularly feature musicians Yvonne McSkimming, Beverly Elliot, and Mark James Fortin and have previously included performers such as Don Alder, Sarah Wheeler, Andrea Menard, David Sinclair, and twin-sister duo FIONN. Find tickets for Just Singin’ Round through the New View Society ’s Facebook page or at Eventbrite, and have an enjoyable night out while supporting an outstanding, local organization!
HOW CONSOLIDATING DEBT INTO YOUR MORTGAGE CAN HELP YOU This is not your parent’s mortgage!! We have been well trained by our parents who have been strongly influenced by the banks to want to quickly pay off our mortgages. Back then, the price of homes were substantially lower and the interest rates were astronomically higher. Our environment has changed. We now have these big mortgages with incredibly low interest rates that we should be taking advantage of. The equity grows and you get the tax benefits of home ownership. Due to cost of everything including home ownership rising, 6/10 Canadians are living paycheck to paycheck due to debt. We are struggling with debt and the banks are profiting from the incredibly high interest rates incurred by credit cards and other loan providers.
Saving our clients money and the freedom of not living paycheck to paycheck Through debt consolidation, we have saved our clients anywhere from $500 to $5,000 per month that they were using to pay off their debts. That equals anywhere from $6,000 to $60,000 a year. It's empowering to be able to build a savings nest or buy an investment property or invest in RRSP’s and RESPs. All the things our client’s wanted to do but were unable to do because they were focused on paying off debt. This increase in liquid cash can make the difference between spending the next 10 years paying off debt or spending the next 10 years building up your financial portfolio and your savings account and growing your wealth.
I still want to pay my mortgage off faster!!! Debt Consolidation will free up your monthly cash flow to in turn re-invest in yourself and your financial goals. If you have a home and have acquired the equity in your home, why not take advantage of the lowest interest rate available. Most of us are afraid to consolidate our debt with our mortgage. Our main focus is to pay off our Mortgage as quickly as possible…before retirement preferably, please and thank you. Think about this, how are you possibly going to pay off all that debt without an inheritance, winning the lottery or a crazy large bonus at work. If your debt is growing, be proactive. Refinancing with the lowest available interest rate, including any penalties or costs, will give you the chance to start over and increase your cash flow which can now contribute to the principal in your home rather then the payment on the high interest of your debt.
This is even more possible after a debt consolidation. This increased cash flow can be put back into your mortgage as well as be used to build up savings. Traditional Bank mortgage terms and conditions lock you into an inflexible mortgage that takes away your control to pay off your mortgage quicker and adjust to life’s challenges. In some cases, you are given one day, on your anniversary date to pay an additional amount. Mortgage Brokers have access to Lenders, not available to the public, that will help you achieve your mortgage goals faster and without bias using competitive mortgage rates, flexible payment structures and low exit fees to work to your advantage with every life stage.
Angela Calla is a 15 year award-winning woman of influence and mortgage expert. Alongside her team, passionately assisting mortgage holders get the best mortgage, and educating them on “The Mortgage Show” on CKNW for over a decade and through her best-selling book “The Mortgage Code” available on Amazon. Proceeds from her book sales are donated to a local charity called Access Youth. For media interviews, speaking inquiries or personal mortgage assistance, please contact Angela at callateam@dominionlending.ca or 604-802-3983.

PoCo Dots Activities for Kids By Jennifer Pownall
Chinese New Year The year of the rat officially begins on January 25th, and with it comes an opportunity to learn more about the Chinese New Year. Celebrated on the first new moon after January 21st, this lunar festival is a time for family to gather. Cleaning and sweeping away illfortune are customs meant to prepare for the coming spring and to make way for good luck. And signifying the end of the Chinese New Year, a Lantern Festival takes place on the fifteenth day, which will be on February 8th in 2020. Collect a few small jars, red tissue paper, a paintbrush, and some thinned white glue to create a lovely lantern in recognition of this beautiful holiday. Simply tear the paper into small strips and glue them around the outside of the glass, using the brush to flatten each piece. An adult can even place a candle in the jar, lighting the way to a bright New Year!
Antibullying Anti-Bullying initiatives are becoming increasingly prevalent, and – thanks to Pink Shirt Day – February seems to be the time of year when they are most visible. On February 26th encourage everyone in the family to wear a pink shirt in support of the message that victims of bullying are not alone. Ask kids if they have ever witnessed bullying, or even taken part in it. Perhaps they did not know what to do, or are afraid to ask questions. Being open to these types of conversations are key to educating children and youth and to helping them discover resources and solutions. Remind them that when they are in doubt, kindness is the most important thing... all they need to do is think pink!

Valentine’s Day Valentine’s is well known for being a day associated with love, but perhaps this February 14th kids will find meaning in swapping out paper heart crafts for helping the real thing. February is known as Heart Month, and there is a lot of life-saving work being done in its name. Offering children an early introduction to philanthropy is an amazing way to encourage global citizenship and can even turn into a fun project. Brainstorm different ways to raise money for an organization like the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and set your plans in motion on Valentine’s Day. There may be no better way to celebrate true love!
