Collect moments not things! That is my motto. I love to live in the moment, and I live in gratitude for each day and the experiences that have been shared with me. Those moments – and being fully in them – are where I discover their many gifts, where I find the story that is my life. Ultimately, I believe living in today makes for beautiful tomorrows. It’s a philosophy I carry with me no matter what I am doing. Whether I am being a mother to my beautiful children, watching them grow up in a city where I began my own journey as a teenager. Or if I am starting my work day, visiting the local businesses, catching up with residents, walking my dog in the park, or hiking the Minnekhada trails. I love making time in my day for clients of my Mind Heart Soul wellness business, where we dive into the heart, and I am certainly grateful for how working at What’s On! Port Coquitlam blends with my values and passions. In fact, my vision for the magazine is to bring to light the community and connection this city inspires. I want to highlight how small business owners know and support the people in the area and how that is reciprocated by Port Coquitlam’s citizens. At the magazine I am in charge of sales, social media, and event listings. But at its core, my job is taking the time to get to know the city, associations, and people as they continue to grow, learning the history and old stories of Port Coquitlam, and bringing it all to life in the pages of What’s On. I get to remember the places I would go to at a young age that inspired me to become a better adult. I interact daily with the businesses that treat you as more than a customer. I’m witness to the events that evolve and flourish, to the generosity of their organizers as most are designed and run with the objective of giving back to the community. Will your smoke alarm work when you need it? Did you know that all B.C. homes are required to have smoke alarms?

Did you know that City bylaws require all residents and businesses to clear the public sidewalks along their property as soon as possible after a snowfall? This is important to ensure all pedestrians can get to their destination safely. portcoquitlam.ca/snow.

No Youth Left Behind. Access Youth Outreach Services is a registered charity that has been a part of the Tri-Cities’ community since the late 1990’s, connecting with the most vulnerable youth through its innovative programming and ‘outside the box’ thinking. Over the years, there have been many changes, but always just one goal, that there will be ‘No Youth Left Behind’. In April 2019, Access welcomed its newest program, a joint venture with WorkBC, to provide the Tri-Cities with a full time employment facilitator to help youth find empowerment through employment. Access’ Outreach program at Coquitlam Centre, and it’s mobile drop in centre, also known as ‘The Bus’ make connections with hundreds of youth every year. We provide outreach services and access to community resources for the most vulnerable in our communities and seek to provide empowerment through positive mentorship. We are proud of our mandate of ‘no youth left behind’, and continue to focus on meeting youth ‘where they are at’ both emotionally, and physically. 2019 has been a year of new energy, growth, and a renewed commitment to our mission. We at Access are so proud to be a part of a community that recognizes that youth connecting to their communities is a vital sign of the overall health of that community. New initiatives in 2019 include

partnering with Tennis BC to run free local tennis workshops, the PoCo Foundations Vital Signs Task Force initiative, and an after school ‘Access to the Arts’ program. You can catch our Mobile Drop in Bus in the Tri-Cities on Friday and Saturday nights from 7PM- Midnight, with the goal of adding a Thursday night run before the end of the year! For youth that are looking for more ‘one-onone’ style support, Access runs a full-time Youth Empowerment Worker program. This program operates from a youth based goal perspective and focuses on individual growth through positive mentorship. Today is a complicated time to be a youth. Social media, bullying, mental & sexual health, and a changing drug climate are the common themes the youth discuss as challenges in their everyday life. As outreach workers, we do our best to answer their questions, and support them with positive alternatives as they navigate these daily challenges. Access Youth Outreach has no ongoing funding and operates solely on grants, private funding and donations. Please check our website www.accessyouth.org for current events and programs. The life blood of our organization are our amazing volunteers. If you are looking to get involved with the youth of your community, please don’t hesitate to reach out through our website!

The Toast of the Town. By Jennifer Pownall.

Avidity. As a writer, I love coming across words with which I am unfamiliar, and this was one that had failed to cross into my consciousness until an event this past week. Avidity, meaning extreme enthusiasm,

was the word of the day at an open house for the Down to Business Toastmasters Club, and it clearly described the disposition of those gathered for the meeting.

Toastmasters International was founded nearly a century ago, and is comprised of over 16,000 clubs across 143 countries. Its members can expect to learn public speaking skills, the cornerstone for which the association is largely known, but they will also discover a focus on leadership and building selfconfidence. The open house, held to invite potential members and other visitors to get a feel for the group, was a great introduction to what the club offers. Well-presented organizational information, prepared speeches, and time to network were all expected elements. The precision timing, evaluations of presenters, and cannoli were surprising – yet welcome – components of the meeting. However, the most entertaining and endearing aspect was the table top session, apparently a staple activity in the club’s operations. Members were offered the chance to present an impromptu speech by selecting from a series of numbers. Each number corresponded to a unique question and then they were off, utilizing just a couple of minutes to respond to the topic. Queries such as “What word best describes your

actions this past month?” and “When you do something for someone is there anything in it for you?” and “When is silence the better option?” were fantastic inspiration for the exercise. It was obvious those listening became engaged in the subject matter, while the speakers garnered valuable practice time thinking on their feet and honing presentation skills. And it didn’t hurt that a few members knew how to illustrate their points with humour. For example, by emphasizing the shift to a counter argument in their topic by cocking an eyebrow imbued with the emotive power of Eugene Levy and punctuating the deafening pause with a succinct, “BUT...” Above all, the open house was great fun, and it was hugely successful in providing a glimpse into a club that values camaraderie and positivity. Being a lover of words, the experience afforded me a deeper appreciation for the spoken aspects of language, yet sent me away with tools to utilize in my own writing practice. And it’s possible my name may end up on their membership. With an encouraging, supportive group like the Down to Business Toastmasters Club, reconnecting with my own avidity would always be just a meeting away. Down to Business Toastmasters meets Wednesdays, 9:0010:30am at the Keller Williams Elite Realty Training Centre, Unit #111-2099 Lougheed Highway, Port Coquitlam. PoCo Dots Activities for Kids By Jennifer Pownall

Author’s Day Author’s Day is on November 1st and there are many ways to celebrate this enjoyable nod to the important wordsmiths in your life. There is no better time to snuggle up on a fall day with young children, reading them their favourite stories... even if it is the same one over and over again. Take kids to the library and get them their own borrowing card if they don’t already have one, ask about and take part in literacy programs, or help them select new books or old favourites to take home. Invite older children and youth to reach out to the author of a beloved book or series by writing a letter or by acknowledging their work through writing, or even filming, a review. But by far, the best way to encourage kids to have fun this Author’s Day is for them to actually become an author! Pull out that old notebook, brush off the laptop, or just grab some crayons and paper and start writing. Everyone has a story inside of them and that is something worth celebrating!

Creating handmade wrapping paper Kids of all ages will love creating handmade wrapping paper this holiday season. For a small gift you can use computer or construction paper as the base, but for a larger project something off a roll, like art or packing paper, is the better choice. For a frugal alternative, sheets from a newspaper can be used to craft wrapping that lends the finished product the extra decorative element of printed stories beneath the art. Have children use whatever medium peaks their interest to decorate the paper, as long as the results are still relatively flat, and keep in mind that setting up a plastic table cloth beforehand will help with clean-up. Great options include using crayons, felts, paint, stickers, or stamps and ink, or gluing on small foam pieces, torn bits of tissue paper, pictures or words cut from magazines, sequins, or photocopies of favorite photographs. Top each gift with a beautiful bow and that’s a wrap!

New Year’s Day New Year’s Day is just around the corner, and with it comes the familiar pull of resolution. But children don’t need the pressure of rigid goals. Instead, turn the approach of 2020 into a fun activity for the family. Start a conversation about what you all want in the coming year: Is Dad hoping to finally get that vegetable garden started this spring? Does Grandma want to take everyone to a baseball game? Maybe the kids have their hearts set on visiting at least one new park each month? Whatever the individual dreams are, look for ways everyone can take part. Make plans to plant those seeds as a group, help raise funds for those tickets, or circle dates in the calendar to hunt down the best playgrounds. The most important part is to resolve to do it together smaller shapes for use in other colourful crafts!

Interfaith Celebrations:

Sharing Resources, Telling Stories by Tamara Gorin

Here in North America and in the northern hemisphere generally, we tend to associate the late fall and early winter season with Christian high holy days. But there are many fall and winter festivals, representing the faiths and beliefs of people the world over. Central to most are the ideas of sharing the wealth of the harvest, honouring our ancestors, and preparing for the long cold months ahead. Fire festivals, fasting and feast days, and gift giving, along with acts of charity are just some of the ways that we make merry. Storytelling traditions are very important to this time of year. The stories we tell each explain our place in the world and provide us with sacred spaces for wonder and worship. Whether reading a Dicken’s classic or sharing a book of Indigenous Solstice traditions, telling oral histories of our families and cultures in diaspora or participating in a religious festival with our neighbours, all of us are bound to each other, our communities, and the Earth’s cycle of the year. Western Sky Books stocks new and used editions of many sacred texts. We can help you to organize a book themed advent calendar, gift basket, or hamper for a family in need. Call or email the store with your ideas and let’s see what we can do to help you share the light and love of story this season.

Earlier this fall, Kinsight celebrated its 65th anniversary. Established in 1954, Kinsight has seven decades of working alongside families of children, youth and adults with developmental delays or disabilities to support growth and personal well-being. The organization was born out of a group of parents who wanted more for their children, their communities and themselves. Pioneering parents Robert and Pauline Mowat placed an advertisement on June 15, 1953 in the Columbian newspaper inviting other family members to their home. Pat McFee, a teacher at (then) Woodlands School saw the ad and attended the meeting along with several other people Together, their movement led to the incorporation of the British Columbia Society for Handicapped Children, a name that has changed six times since the organization’s inception. For many years, it was known as the Simon Fraser Society for Community Living. The phrase “community living” underscored the effort of families and service providers who were advocating for deinstitutionalization and community living for all.

HONOURING ITS FAMILY ROOTS In 2017, the organization rebranded to Kinsight to honour its roots.

“Kin is a nod to families who are at the core of Kinsight’s work, and sight reflects the wisdom and vision of those who founded our organization 65 years ago and the many who will continue to shape our future,” explains Christine Scott, Kinsight CEO.

24

To Kinsight, family means all of the children and adults served, as well as employees, community and business and funding partners. Its definition of family includes: • People like Pat McFee who influenced the organization’s early school-based programs, and the many Port Coquitlam child care providers, teachers and community professionals who work with Kinsight to promote inclusion and innovation • Businesses like Me ‘n Ed’s pizza on McAllister and the Pharmasave on Coast Meridian – some of the many inclusive employers supporting Kinsight’s goal to help youth and adults obtain meaningful, paid employment • Community organizations such as Leigh Square Community Arts Village – a welcoming space that fosters community connections and creativity

A VISION OF BELONGING While Kinsight has evolved over the decades, it has remained true to its mandate to build meaningful relationships and fulfilling lives. Its vision --

Everyone’s Welcome. Everyone Belongs. Everywhere – shows up every day in the work they do in the Port Coquitlam community.

At its Port Coquitlam location on Salisbury Avenue, the team works tirelessly to foster opportunities for greater community connections. They provide a number of programs and services – from workshops for parents and service providers to adult learning opportunities. But more importantly, they use their space as a hub to create experiences in community, through programs such as Community Inclusion. Kinsight’s Community Inclusion initiative helps people identify and explore their interests and abilities. With an

emphasis on lifelong learning, the program encourages people to experiment and engage in activities where they can share their skills and interests, volunteer, prepare for employment, and make new social connections. “Community is at the heart of everything we do. Community extends beyond neighbourhoods and includes people and organizations with a shared sense of belonging and vision for the future,” Scott explains. “We seek out and support people who value others – people who see, create and are open to new ideas about ways to share their interests and activities with others.”

AN EMPHASIS ON INNOVATION Kinsight has a long history of “firsts” including offering one of the first inclusive preschools in the community. For many years, Kinsight operated PoCo Children’s World, a specialized preschool on the Cedar Drive site. In the 1990s, the organization piloted an early version of the Supported Child Development program, and transitioned resources from PoCo Children’s World to a service designed to support all preschools and child care settings. Today, Supported Child Development staff work with preschool and child care programs across the region (including independently owned Cedar Drive preschool) to support them to include all children.

based program focusses on helping people develop confidence and independence in community, and strengthen their informal supports. Now & Next was created in Australia and is now available in Canada through Kinsight. The program is designed to be run by parents, for parents, and was developed to help families build skills and leadership. In 2019, Kinsight also broke ground on the Tri-Cities Children’s Centre development – 22,000 square feet of space that will serve more than 2,500 families each year in the Tri-Cities. The Children’s Centre, a partnership with SHARE Family and Community Services, is slated to open in 2021. “Our future plans are ambitious,” Scott notes, unapologetically. “We are committed to investing in research and development that will move us beyond the traditional range of services we offer today.” “We will do so in service of families, individuals and the community who want to create a world where everyone’s welcome, everyone belongs, everywhere.” Learn more about Kinsight at kinsight.org or visit its Facebook page.

The organization remains steadfast in its drive for innovation. In 2019, Kinsight kicked off two new initiatives: the “LIFE” pilot and “Now & Next.” Kinsight was selected as one of five organizations in BC to offer the LIFE program, which stands for Learning, Inclusion, Friendship and Employment. BRAINWORKS with Lucas Andersen

Mental Illness a common problem? Mental illness affects all Canadians at some time. It can affect them through a family member, a friend or even a colleague. 20% of all Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime. No matter someones age, social status, income level, and education, it can affect anyone. A complex array of genetic, biological, personality and environmental factors cause mental illnesses. Stigma or discrimination attached to mental illnesses is a serious issue. It can prevent diagnosis and its treament. Stigma can also relate to many isolating factors such as acceptance amongst friends, the community, and even family.

As someone who has been diagnosed with psychosis personally, I have felt all the hardships and the positives of mental illness. First, what caused or induced my psychosis? A simple answer to that question is: Substance abuse and stress. When the symptoms of psychosis arose, others noticed something was wrong. But I was so involved in my own dellusions, paranoia, and isolation, I did not recognize it myself. My parents noticed a drastic change in me. If it wasn't for them I would have never recieved help and I wouldn't be writing this today.

I was quickly thrown into the Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI). EPI programs help people who have recently started to experience psychosis. I was reluctant and resistant as my treatment began. I would not talk much, when I did it was soft and quiet. After long, I became a whole new person. I now take with Lucas a nice cocktail of Andersen medication every night to keep me sane. I am more confident, and enjoy talking and interacting with others. Stay tuned for next months issue for a detailed look intoAs someone who has been diag with psychosis personally, I ha my journey through psychosis. all the hardships and the posit

Firefighters Charitable Society Gala Ball

Sharon Perry James Anderson

On Saturday, September 28th firefighters from Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam joined members of the community to celebrate the 6th annual Coquitlam Firefighters Charitable Society Gala Ball at Riverside Community church in Port Coquitlam. Everyone was greeted outside by two fire trucks with the Canadian flag proudly blowing in the wind between the extended ladders. Upon arrival guests were welcomed into the VIP lounge for pre-dinner drinks and appetizers and socializing. Guests were also welcome to check out and bid on a large selection of silent auction items as they made their way into the beautifully decorated reception area for dinner and dancing. This was the first year that the Coquitlam Firefighters Charitable Society had partnered up with Port Coquitlam Firefighters Charitable Society and it seems it was a great success with an excellent turnout of firefighters from both cities volunteering their time for the evening. The purpose of the gala is to raise funds and awareness for school breakfast and snack programs in the communities. James Anderson, gala chair and vice-president of the Coquitlam Firefighters Charitable Society, was previously a school teacher in the Surrey school district and saw first-hand the impact a school snack program had on the kids. The title sponsor this year was Sharon Perry & Associates CPA with music provided by DJ Flipout.

writing and assembling a script focused on ‘what it means to be WOMXN: an exploration of how womxn find their way in society, and discover in life what it means to be a womxn for them.’ This theme of Womxnhood will be explored in two ways. First is an indepth examination of Nelson’s grandmother’s life growing up in East Vancouver during the 1940’s and 50’s with only her mother and sister. Second is more expansive, encompassing many stories and perspectives, open to all individuals who identify as a womxn (not limited to cis-gendered ‘women’). Her hope is for the project to be as inclusive as possible, providing space for gender variant individuals to participate, especially those who may have been pushed out of conversations around womxnhood before. Nelson will provide an opportunity for all womxn to speak and share with her how they have learnt to be womxn, as well as some of their formative experiences growing up as womxn.

Festive Scandinavian cookies, though no-one seems to know their exact origins. These small spheres of butter, flour, powdered sugar and nuts, dusted with more powdered sugar for good measure are a Christmas delight. Makes: 20-24 cookies, Preparation time: 20 minutes, Cooking time: 8-10 minutes

Ingredients

Method

1 cup / 225g butter or vegan butter 1/2 cup / 60g confectioners sugar 2 1/3 cups / 300g all purpose flour, sifted ¼ tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla essence 3/4 cup /100g pecan nuts or walnuts, chopped fine Extra confectioners sugar for dusting

Preheat oven to 400F / 200C / Gas mark 6 Cream the butter and sugar together thoroughly. Add flour, salt, vanilla and pecans, and mix well. Cover dough and chill for half an hour. Form dough into small balls (about 1 inch / 2.5cm diameter). If the dough seems too crumbly don’t be tempted to add water or the resulting cookies will be hard, just let the heat from your hands gradually bring it all together. Place 2 inches / 5cm apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until set but NOT brown (8-10 minutes). Allow to cool for 3 minutes before removing from baking sheet, then roll in icing sugar. When completely cool, roll in the confectioners sugar again. They make lovely festive handmade gifts in pretty boxes.

4 Types of Anxiety That Can Be Relieved with

Hypnotherapy. For most people, anxiety is a part of any normal life, such as being a bit nervous before an interview. But there are people who suffer chronic anxiety, and it interferes with how you live daily.

psychological problem. Those who suffer from social anxiety feel they are being judged and evaluated whenever they are in social and performance situations. They are aware that it is an unwanted, controlling anxiety and fear, and feel that preventing it seems impossible.

Anxiety is not only a behavioural issue; it can be detrimental to your physical health. Symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and depression can be brought on more frequently by regular release of stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) due to long-term anxiety and panic attacks. Long-term exposure to these hormones can be harmful to your longterm physical health; for example, cortisol can contribute to weight gain.

Certain traumatic and anxiety-provoking events in people’s lives can have connecting physical and emotional reactions. If you had a traumatic first public speaking experience, further experiences when exposed to public settings and situations may be associated with the first, causing intense anxiety as a result.

When you suffer from anxiety, you can be at an increased risk of high blood pressure and heart disease as it can cause rapid heart rate, palpitations, and chest pain. It can also affect your excretory and digestive systems by causing stomach aches, nausea, diarrhea, and other issues. Anxiety can wreak havoc on other functions of your body including the immune and respiratory systems. It can cause other symptoms to arise including headaches, muscle tension, insomnia, depression, and social isolation. Here are four of the most common types of anxiety I’ve seen as a hypnotherapist and where my practice can help.

1. Panic Disorder Panic disorder is characterized by fear and worry, with one of the most noticeable symptoms as experiencing constant and abrupt panic attacks. These attacks are a combination of distressing thoughts and emotions and frightening physical sensations, with no actual threat or danger present.

2. Social Anxiety Social anxiety, while not well understood by the general population, including some professionals, is a common

3. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Characterized by uncontrollable obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, OCD is a mental disorder that can seriously take control of people’s lives, robbing them of their happiness, peace of mind, and health. A known trigger of OCD is anxiety, which becomes a problematic cycle. When your anxiety gets worse, your OCD symptoms get worse too.

4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Triggered by experiencing or seeing a traumatic event, PTSD is a mental health condition that may include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety. Those living with PTSD will rethink the event constantly, day in and day out. Keep in mind, hypnotherapy may not work immediately for everyone living with anxiety as some people are more suggestible than others. Make sure if you suspect you may be suffering from any of these anxiety disorders that you are properly diagnosed. Then you can take the proper steps to ensure that hypnotherapy is right for your treatment plan. Anxiety doesn’t have to control your entire life. If you experience any of these symptoms, hypnotherapy may be well worth your consideration. Contact me if you want to transform your life and become anxiety-free.

Apple Strudel

A Festive Favourite

Ingredients 6 cups / 750g /1lb 10oz Bramley apples, peeled, cored, quartered and sliced 1½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ unwaxed lemon, zest only 2 tsp lemon juice 100g/3½oz golden caster/baking sugar 2/3 cups / 75g / 2½oz raisins 1/2 cup / 95g / 3½oz butter 1/3cup / 40g / 1½oz white breadcrumbs 6 large sheets filo pastry 1 tbsp icing sugar

42

Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 40-45 mins Serves: 6-8

Method Preheat the oven to 375F / Gas 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Mix the quartered apples with the cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 1/8 cup / 20g / ¾oz butter and fry the breadcrumbs until goldenbrown, then add these to the apple mixture. Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet of the filo and brush with some of the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all the filo. Layering the pastry with the melted butter helps to create flaky layers. Place the filling along the length of the pastry along one side about 1 inch / 2-3cm from the edge. Using the tea-towel to help you, roll the pastry up to enclose the filling. Tuck the ends in and roll the strudel seam-side down onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden-brown. Leave to cool to room temperature and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or custard.
