All about What’s On Port Coquitlam Dear Readers,

Port Coquitlam Thanks to our readers for continuing to support our vision of connecting the community with resources, non profits and businesses. Since 2015, owners Leah Barker and Angela Andersen’s vision has been to connect the community to resources and bring awareness to local organizations. Even though Leah has moved away (she says “temporarily”) Leah is still a big part of the magazine. (Unfortunately, she was unable to make it to our photo shoot.) Angela’s Note: As a former Rotary Club leader, I saw a need for businesses and community residents to see the good local organizations do. My hope was that through raising awareness there would be continued and enhanced support. Port Coquitlam businesses love to give back! Port Coquitlam residents love to volunteer! Our magazine creates opportunities to acknowledge and highlight the important work that is being done here. Our team at What’s On! Port Coquitlam are dedicated people that are engaged in many ways in our city. They love to connect, help, and become involved with everything from businesses, to non-profit, to local residents. We are out there visiting restaurants and gyms, making connections and collaborating at arts and culture meetings, and contributing to city projects and programs. We are excited to be a part of Port Coquitlam and we know it shows! This next year we will be expanding the magazine content. We will be bringing more organizations to light and showcasing businesses that give back. We encourage and welcome any suggestions for content you would like to see.

We welcome your article submissions. To make this a great community resource we encourage all to submit articles and non profit profiles relating to our community. Please note that all submissions will be edited and formatted. For information on the specific requirements please email Angela or Leah.

YOUR CAUSE IS OUR CAUSE The Canadian Royal Purple, Port Coquitlam Lodge #10, has been in the Tri-Cities community for 72 years. We were originally known as the Royal Purple of Canada, the auxiliary to the Elks but went out on our own in 2014. We are a group of dynamic, fun loving volunteers helping our kids and our community. We have fun raising money and more fun giving it away. In the last five years we have given away approximately $65,000 to many groups and organizations including help for hearing impaired children, bursaries and prom assistance, to local high

schools, help for battered women, the food bank and its programs, seniors organizations, etc. We also have our annual Handbags of Hope campaign, starting in August.

We need members to continue helping.

MOMS STRONG!

The 3rd Annual TCMG Shelley Webster Memorial Golf Tournament takes place September 14, 2019 at Westwood Plateau Executive Golf Course. The aim of this event is to support Tri-Cities Moms while giving ladies a day to unwind. The tournament's inspiration is Shelley Webster, late mother of TCMG member Laura Thomas, who founded a successful ladies only tournament. She helped shape the 1st Annual TCMG Golf Tournament but sadly, passed away the morning of the event. Shelley was unable to see what an outstanding impact she had on this event; the tournament has since been re-named in her honour. All proceeds from the sold out tournament will go directly towards aiding local families throughout the year. For more info please contact the Volunteer Team at tcmggolf@gmail.com.

PoCo Dots Activities for Kids By Jennifer Pownall

Talk Like a Pirate Day! Shiver me timbers! September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Give it the old heave ho and discover ways to enjoy this hilarious holiday. Turn a large box into a pirate ship and set sail for adventure, bury something in your backyard and create a map with an ‘X’ to mark the spot, or design a treasure chest using an old egg carton and fill it with coins made from aluminum-wrapped cardboard disks. Or chase after the best booty of all: stories. Collect a number of flat stones, 1-2 inches across, and use acrylic paint to create basic, pirate-related icons on each one. Paint one with a flag, another with a compass, and one with a captain’s hat. Paint general pictures like the sun, a palm tree, or water, and more specific ones such as a skeleton, a sea serpent, or a hook. Use the stones to tell a variety of pirate tales and it may just save you from walking the plank!

Pumpkin Decorating

Back to School Looking for a way to celebrate backto-school? Search last year’s backpacks for old crayons and pencil sharpeners and you are well on your way to a fun activity. Peel away any paper from the crayons and use either a cheese grater or the sharpener to make wax shavings. Be careful with your fingers! Separate the colours into individual dishes, or mix them all together for a project with younger children. Fold sheets of wax paper in half to form a crease in the center, reopen, and sprinkle one side with the shavings to make shapes, pictures, or other designs. Avoid getting the wax too close to the edges, then – once the creative process is complete – fold the paper back over the art to sandwich the crayon bits, and carefully transfer the package to rest between a few sheets of newsprint. Have an adult run an iron, set on low heat, over the project to slowly melt the wax. You can hang the finished art in a window to enjoy the full effect of the beautiful, faux stained glass, or cut it up into smaller shapes for use in other colourful crafts!

Put a different spin on decorating pumpkins this October by swapping knives and scoops for permanent markers. There are so many symbols of Halloween that would be great to showcase on the seasonal fruit, but cutting details into that orange flesh can be a real challenge. So tap into your inner sketch artist! Use washable felts to draft ideas – or skip this step for those with steady hands – and then trace over the design using permanent markers. An especially effective technique for capturing the spooky spirit of the holiday is to create simple black silhouettes on white pumpkins: think of things like cats, bats, crows, beetles, spiders, webs, or trees. Use pictures in books to gather ideas, search online for templates, and let your imagination loose. Most importantly, give yourself pumpkin to be proud of!

People love to talk about books! Whether searching for a well-loved storybook, a book lent and not returned (we call that “the one that got away,”) or venting about the movie based on a book (“the book WAS better,”) we all have book stories to tell. We think of reading as something we do by ourselves, but the roots of reading come from very ancient story telling traditions in every human culture. In our fast paced world, it is no wonder libraries and bookstores bustle with storytelling circles, book launches, poetry readings, writing groups, and book clubs as we meet to share our love of story and by extension, books. Book clubs are a great way to get the best of both worlds. We read books on our own and then meet with others and chat. With the added benefit of encouraging a more careful and intentional read, we tend to savour reading more knowing we’ll be sharing feelings and ideas. So how do you participate in a book club? There is no right or wrong way to join a current one or start your own. There are book clubs on various social media platforms and you can check out Meet-Up and other apps to find one close to home. Many workplaces, social clubs, and church groups have active book clubs. If they don’t, and you ask around, you are likely to get an enthusiastic “Yes!” as others are looking to share in the same experience.

Here are the basics to get you started: • Is your club online or in real life? • Pick a name! • Will you read fiction, non-fiction or a mix? • Set a number of participants (small and intimate, or large and rambunctious.) • Choose your monthly time and dates. Book 4 dates to start. • Decide if the club members or the organizer will pick the books. Hint: As the planner, pick two to get you started, then the group can choose. • Online: create a page for your club, pick your club admins, and send invites. • In real life: book your space (your home, a bookstore, the library, a coffee shop, a park.) Look for members. You can create a social media page or Meet up too. • Pick your books! Check with the library and with your independent bookstore, such as Western Sky Books. Just give us lots of notice so we can search for used or order new copies, often at a discount for bulk orders. • Read your book. • Meet with your book gang! No matter how you choose to share your love of books and reading, we hope you’ll enjoy yourselves and the company you’re in.

NEW VIEW SOCIETY

Coming together to raise MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS “For a long time I remained isolated. But the greatest thing about being a New View member has been the overwhelming sense of community. I think everyone is capable of having a recovery. Everyone. And I know that with this community, my recovery can, and has been, a success.” Andrew, member On Saturday July 27, 2019, New View Mental Health Society hosted a Family BBQ at Lion’s Park in Port Coquitlam. Between the turnout, the positive company, and the great food and activities, we could not be more grateful to our community - our members, staff, family members, and supporters from the general public! It is clear that community plays a huge role in reducing social isolation and promoting recovery in individuals who live with severe and persistent mental illness, so it’s community participation at events like these that help move us toward our vision of Community Health through Mental Health. Moving forward from this great afternoon, and in addition to these open events for everyone to come and enjoy, we wanted to reflect on some ways we are able to support our community, just as they support us. New View hosts a series of important programs that focus on improving support systems and increasing awareness - not only for those who live with mental illness, but also for family members and individuals who are looking to further develop their own understanding and education on mental health.

One program is the Pathways Serious Mental Illness Society Family-to-Family Education Course. This program aims to teach self-care skill building, problem solving techniques, and how to navigate the mental health system. The next one will be held from early September to December. Another program New View offers is the Mental Health First Aid course, which is a two-day course held next on October 17-18th. Just as First Aid is administered to someone physically injured, Mental Health First Aid trains people to support individuals in a mental health crisis. More information for both programs can be found on our website, www.newviewsociety.org. Mental illness affects one in three Canadians at some point in their lifetime. Developing connections and supports through events such as our Family BBQ are an important part of the recovery journey, and learning how to take care of our own and others’ mental wellness is just as important. Luckily, here at New View Society, this can be a reality for all. We hope to include everyone in supporting mental health and better understanding mental illness – and through this understanding achieve “Community Health through Mental Health”.

healthier and stronger together. A place where new relationships and friendships are made. Kind of like a sisterhood!

30 Minute Hit is so much MORE than just a 30 minute boxing/kickboxing circuit, it’s a communHITy of women, growing as individuals, getting physically

We provide unlimited training, a kid friendly area and a 30 Minute Hit Trainer by your side every step of the way!

Our workout is FUN, FAST and EFFECTIVE and great for all ages and fitness levels. We would love for you to give us a try and see what so many women are talking about!

Member Testimonies I fell in love with this place after my trial session and haven't looked back since! The environment is so welcoming and supportive; it's just a bunch of strong ladies supporting and celebrating each others’ goals and accomplishments, what's not to love? I've recommended it to everyone I know because I truly feel that everyone could benefHIT from coming here! Lindsey S. The 30min Hit has allowed me to get back into a regular workout routine after having kids. Not only are

kids able to come with no cost, they are also able to feel comfortable being in the same room, rather than in a separate daycare center within the gym. It's also a bonus that they get to see their mom kick some butt and establish healthy goals. The trainers are amazing, and the members are equally as amazing. This is a community of strong, supportive, beautiful women. I walk out of there after every workout feeling empowered and proud that I've found a workout routine that suits my lifestyle. Jennifer T.

The Power Of Yet What if I told you, you could drastically change your life by transforming your mindset? How does it make you feel to know that you have the power, and the ability to create the life of your dreams? • Mindset and being aware of our self-talk/language is key; when facing a fear, changing a behavior or pursuing a new goal etc. Just because you are not currently where you want to be, simply means you have yet to get there. What have you yet to achieve in your life that you would appreciate some support around? • Change does not happen overnight, however with the right support, and taking a series of steps to make that change, you can get to where you have yet to reach. Remember to be gentle and kind with yourself in the process; as changing a behavior, facing a fear or chasing your dreams can at times be overwhelming and scary. Remember to take it one step at a time! You’ve got this! You have “YET” to see how successful you will be. As an Intuitive Reconnection Coach, I help driven individuals transform their life through mindset, self-awareness, acceptance, clarity and direction. While, also helping people empower themselves through self-love, and self-celebration. What could you do with your life, if you had the right support, and invested the time and energy to reconnect to yourself to realign your life?
