EVENTS! FOLLOW OUR EVENTS ON @WHATS ON MISSION,
Happy New Year! from my Family to Yours! This is going to be a great year – I can feel it! From my constituency office on First Avenue, I am sensing that there is more vibrancy, more energy, particularly in downtown Mission – but elsewhere as well. I am very thankful to our Council for their forward vision in revitalizing downtown with a significant investment of $3.5 million which was completed earlier this year. Downtown Mission is definitely more pedestrianfriendly now with the decorative sidewalks, irrigated street trees and new street lamps. I often see residents enjoying the benches which are located in strategic locations along the street. In general, the key indicators are very positive for Mission. Total value of building permits are up and the housing market is buoyant as increasingly people, especially young families, are discovering that we are ideally located to key amenities. The Silverdale area could very likely see a dramatic increase in population in the coming years with Polygon taking the lead on much of the residential development with 700 acres under their ownership. Increasingly, I am seeing new businesses opening in Mission which is a good economic indicator. “Shop local” will be more attractive as the mix of available businesses for local shoppers increases.

Mission Health Care Auxiliary is turning 100! In 1920, a group of women banded together and formed the “Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.” Led by its president, Emma Houlder, who was also a member of the newly formed Mission Memorial Hospital board, the two groups joined forces and rented a house on the corner of Third Avenue and Birch Street. With $150 raised from a bazaar, they were able to open the first hospital in Mission on May 15, 1920. Until then, the nearest public hospital was in New Westminster. After much fundraising, a new hospital was opened on Fifth Avenue and James Street on February 1925, named Mission Memorial Hospital as a living memorial to the men of Mission who died in the First World War. In 1965, the hospital moved again to its present location on Hurd Street (Beryl Lambarde). In those early years, the ladies of the Auxiliary raised money for the hospital by means of raffles, bake sales, musical evenings, catering and even doing the laundry in their own homes. Now, most of their fundraising comes from the Gift Shop at Mission Memorial Hospital and the Cottage Thrift Store on First Avenue. Completely run by volunteers, the Cottage Thrift Store’s popularity and growth have made it the greatest source of funding for the Auxiliary. Their largest project-to-date saw them raising $300,000 over a 3-year period for a new ultrasound machine and renovations. The Auxiliary has purchased all the televisions on the 2nd floor which are rented to patients along with other medical equipment such as crutches and walkers for donations. Beyond fundraising, the Auxiliary offers services to patients and staff in Ambulatory Day Care, Reception Desk, in TRIM (The Residence in Mission), a long-term care facility; and help provide underwear, socks, sweatshirts, sweatpants and shoes
in the ER. “If people come in who are homeless with soaking wet socks and shoes, the Auxiliary can outfit them,’ said Alyce Campbell, Past President. Today’s members – now named the Mission Health Care Auxiliary Society – want to celebrate their 100th Anniversary this April 4, 2020 by holding the largest fundraising project in its history with a goal of $500,000. Joanne Bydal, Auxiliary Vice President said the organization is the “best-kept secret in Mission. People don’t realize what we do.” Members have volunteered over 135,500 hours and donated over $600,000 over the last five years. The Auxiliary’s mission is to support to support, enhance and promote health care in our community through volunteering and fundraising.
The Auxiliary has an ongoing need for volunteers. Applications can be found at the hospital Gift Shop, the Cottage Thrift Store or their Facebook page

TAKE A CLASS: It’s as much about training the owner as it is the dog. Equip yourself with the tools and knowledge on how to appropriately train with the support of a professional trainer. LEADERSHIP: Dog’s do amazing things for their companions. If you have little time or patients for the dog, s/he will be reluctant to listen to you. Build a strong bond with them and set the right tone in the household. This means, ensuring all members of the household are involved in training and are consistent with the commands and rules. HAVE FUN: Dog training has evolved over the years and has become more effective and fun. If your dog still loses interest quickly, find what motivates them. This could be higher value treats, a favorite toy, or a game of tug as a reward for a job well done. By keeping training bursts short, positive, and highly rewarding you should see your dog’s attention span and willingness increase. BRAIN GAMES: A tired dog is a well-behaved dog! Have them earn their meal either thru a series of commands or a puzzle/toy dispenser. Keeping high drive or dogs that never tire mentally stimulated will help avoid boredom and naughty behavior. SET UP FOR SUCCESS: Eliminate as many distractions by beginning with a quiet, familiar environment. Proceed once your dog’s level of impulse control and listening skills have improved. Always use high value treats when teaching your dog something new and train when your dog is hungry.

As a trainer, I often hear from frustrated owners claiming their dog is ‘stubborn,’ ‘independent’ or ‘too smart for their own good.’ If training your puppy or new to you dog is proving to be more challenging than expected, do not be discouraged. Here are some tips to hold onto your sanity and get on the right track in raising a well-mannered and happy dog.
Happy Training everyone! Rachelle is the owner and founder of Dogs Crossing.

4 Steps to a Stress-Free Sale Ideally, when you sell your home, you want the process to go smoothly and relatively stress-free. While things may happen that are outside your control, there is a lot you can do to ensure that the selling experience is a good one. Consider these four steps to reduce worry and stress when listing your home: Step 1: Learn the selling process. Find out what to expect when the FOR SALE sign goes up. How will viewings be scheduled? Will an Open House be needed? What happens when there is an offer? The more you know, the less mysterious—and, therefore, less stressful—the experience will be.
Rotary Winter Gala
Step 2: Schedule wisely. Use a calendar to block out times for viewings and other selling-related activities. Be sure to schedule plenty of time to clean and declutter your home before a viewing or Open House. Try not to have a tight schedule during the sales period. Step 3: Anticipate issues. The more problems you can foresee, the better you'll be prepared to deal with them as they arise. For example, if you know you're going to have a busy week at work, start making plans now to deal with viewings and related matters during those days. Step 4: Make decisions. Things can move quickly in the real estate market. There might be a few days when there are no enquiries at all, and then suddenly two offers will come in. Be prepared to make some quick decisions. Fortunately, with sound advice from me as your real estate agent, making those decisions will be a lot easier. So, follow these simple steps. They'll help make your sale less worrisome and even enjoyable!

If anyone hasn’t wandered along Railway Avenue and made their way in to Apostrophie + Co. yet, be sure to include it in your bucket list. You will definitely not be disappointed. Tucked away in quaint & unique Railway, lies a little hair studio and boutique filled with antiques, knick knacks, home decor, beauty products and so much more. You are almost guaranteed to find something to inspire you, as Apostrophie + Co. offers customers a place to find unique and timeless pieces. Elisabeth, the store’s owner, always knew she wanted to be a hairstylist, but she also had always been a collector. She loved to accumulate things that she found beautiful. When she decided to open up her own salon downtown, the store that she chose was a little bit for the one chair that she needed. “I had all this space,” she recalls. “I didn’t know what to do with it all.”

Looking back on the early days, she remembers her mother making the comment that her daughter had always been a collector. “She suggested that I continue doing what I always loved to do to make up for the extra space.” Elisabeth says that the biggest help and support that she received was from her mother and her husband. “I couldn’t have done it without them.” Apostrophie is located downtown in what used to be an old vacuum shop- and the dust that settled over the years definitely took its toll. “There was about 1 inch of build up on the concrete.” Elisabeth shakes her head as she remembers the mess. “My mother spent about a month on her hands and knees chiseling away at the floor.” Apostrophie + Co. was one of the first boutiques to open downtown and Elisabeth is happy that more and more seem to be opening up in the area. “It brings more people downtown and that’s what everyone wants.”

Luminesse Skin & Laser Jasmine always knew that she wanted to be in the business of beauty. She started off her career doing hair and continued along that line of profession for 12+ years. Once she felt like it was time to expand her horizons, she felt the allure of the medical aesthetics aspect of the industry, and decided to concentrate her talents on hair removal. Jasmine has always prided herself on being a local Mission girl, but when she decided to commit herself fully to the decision of continuing her education, she was living in Osoyoos. She made the long commute to the Fraser Valley for her courses each and every week.

Once her schooling was complete and she had some aesthetic experience under her belt, it was time to move back home to Mission and start her own business. Jasmine scoured the streets of Mission, looking for that perfect location for ‘Luminesse’ to call home… and she found it downtown, in the Mission City Business Centre. At first, the darkened old corner space scared her a bit. It was slightly neglected and had a very abandoned and unloved feel to it. It wasn’t long before her dreams began to come true and her vision became attainable. “My family and friends helped out so much,” she recalls. “They made me see the area for all it had to offer… they made my vision come to light. I couldn’t have done it without them.” Luminesse Skin & Laser is still young, but growing every week, with daily appointments. “I love my location and I’m happy that Luminesse is now a part of the downtown,” she boasts. “I am dedicated to providing my clients with long-term satisfaction, using state of the art equipment.” Be sure to pop in and visit Jasmine and her beautiful corner of the downtown.

re you new to the work force and struggling to get a job? Do you have any interest in developing work skills in Manufacturing and Food Processing industries? Would you benefit from some work experience? The Mission Community Skills Centre Society might have a program for you. This February, the Manufacturing Youth Skills Training program will begin in Mission. It is 6-week program designed to provide young adults with specialized industry training that help them find and stay employed. When speaking with Paul, the Job Developer, this program has already had much success in Abbotsford because someone is there to personally walk participants through the entire process, starting from the application to searching for a job to following up post-employment. He says “we have had great success and many of our participants are still employed after 3 months.
these young adults, aged 17 - 29 years, to succeed. They are passionate about helping participants find a path suited to them and bridging the way to becoming confident and successful workers. Beyond the job, they make connections to the participants to ensure long term employment and job satisfaction. Mission Community Skills will be running 4 programs in Mission, the first program starts on February 24, 2020. Seats are limited so if you or someone you know may benefit from this program, CALL TODAY.
One of the things that make this program unique is that you get paid to attend the 6 weeks of classroom training. You will be in class for 25 hours per week, Monday to Friday. They will help you with everything from pre-employment counselling and mentoring to financial supports and post-employment training.

What’s On! In the Community
BAGS TO BEDZZZ Recycling plastic bags into smiles, one mat a time Bags to Bedzzz, a group started by Barb Taylor in 2016, is a subsidiary of Giving Back, a local Fraser Valley group started several years ago in Mission focused on helping out those in need of assistance. Bags to Bedzzz meets a couple times a month to recycle used clean plastic grocery bags and turn them into sleeping mats which are then donated to homeless shelters in our community. Each mat keeps between 400-700 plastic bags from being deposited into the landfills, and in doing so, helps to keep people living under the stars warmer, drier and healthier by insulating them from the cold, damp ground: a win-win situation. Bags to Bedzzz is also currently accepting donations of clean grocery bags. These bags must arrive to the group already flattened and stacked. The group is hoping to create many mats for the colder days, and with your help, they should be able to achieve this goal. There are 2 active chapters for Bags to Bedzzz, one in Aldergrove and in Mission. The Mission Chapter, run by Barb Taylor and assisted by Sue Hunt, meets every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Mission Leisure Centre, 7 - 9pm. If you are interested in dropping off bags or helping out, visit their Facebook page ‘Bags to Bedzzz, Mission’.
