HOLIDAY PROJECTS

1. CHRISTMAS TREE WALL SHELF

Designed for the handyman, this project is a great way to replace the traditional Christmas tree. And it’s perfect for small spaces!

You Will Need:

2. DIY CHRISTMAS BALL WREATH

Christmas balls, a ribbon and a metal hanger. That's all you need (or almost) to make this lovely wreath.

You Will Need:

è Metal clothes hanger è Picture wire è 30 assorted Christmas balls è Ribbon

è 1” x 6” Common Lumber è Screws è Carpenter’s Glue è Pencil è Christmas Decorations See the plan on the RONA.ca website for measurements! Cut and glue the planks together using the carpenter’s glue. Finish the assembly by nailing the pieces together. Decorate the tree and admire your work! Get the kids painting and decorating their own trees!

Shape the clothes hanger into a circle, and start feeding the ornaments onto the wire. Fill the hanger until ¾ full, and join it back together at the top. Add a ribbon and any other festive decor you see fit. Detailed instructions for these projects, as well as winter preparedness tips available at RONA.ca! Stop by at your local RONA store for all the required materials.

Hours of operation: We’re open 7 days a week, and are open early and late on weekdays.

THE HEALTH & WELLNESS SOLUTION DO YOU FIND YOURSELF DREADING THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

Are you stressed and overwhelmed because of the many demands on your time? Do you find it difficult to fit in health and wellness into your lifestyle? The world we live in is rife with toxins from chemicallytreated water to the air that never seems fresh and overprocessed foods that are devoid of nutrition. It has become harder for us to stay healthy in our increasingly contaminated world; and even more difficult to make it a priority in our over scheduled lives. We don’t seem to notice until we are faced with illnesses. There are SOLUTIONS! We can start by eating healthier and moving more. I have also discovered products that support and enhance our DNA health; clearing the free radicals in our systems from the toxins in our environment; repairing and encouraging the mitochondria on all our cells to proliferate healthfully; and providing us with the opportunity to live longer and healthier! To know more and find the solution to your needs, contact me.

WINTERIZING Time to store those summer toys, and prepare gardens and homes for Fall and Winter. It’s also a good time to plan for the upcoming 2020 Personal Income Tax Season. Maybe spend a rainy evening or weekend getting together your income tax information. • Giving? Charitable Donations made by December 31, 2019 are eligible for tax credits against 2019 taxes. • Realized Capital Gains in 2019? Do you have some underperforming investments? Consider selling to offset capital losses against capital gains? Or consider triggering a loss to carry back up to 3 years to recover capital gains taxes from 2016, 2017 or 2018.

• Considering purchasing business assets? You can maximize the capital cost allowance claim for purchases in the current year by delaying them until near the end of your fiscal year. • Debating whether to contribute to your TFSA or RRSP? The tax implications of these two savings vehicles are very different, find out which one fits your unique situation. • Did you turn 71 this year? There may be time to make one last RRSP contribution before converting your RRSP to a RRIF or annuity. LET’S WORK TOGETHER. Call or email to review your unique situation.

Cutting Renovation Costs without Cutting Quality As you probably know, it's easy to lower the costs of a renovation. Just hire an inexpensive, fly-by-night contractor — and hope for the best! Chances are, you won't want to take that risk. So how do you ensure you get quality work while keeping your budget in check? Here are some tips: • Get estimates from at least three contractors. Often prices can vary widely, even amongst contractors with similar reputations and experience. • Narrow the project focus. If you're getting a bathroom renovated, for example, decide whether you need the contractor to paint the new walls. Can you do that yourself? • Shop around for the building materials. Yes, contractors often have access to wholesale prices. Still, you might be able to find a bathtub and vanity at a lower cost or at least avoid any markup the contractor may charge. • Negotiate. Sometimes a contractor is willing to lower the price for concessions, such as quick payments or more time to complete the job. • Schedule the renovation during a low-demand season. For example, deck contractors charge more in the spring than the fall. It's supply and demand. More people want their decks done in the spring. Keep in mind that spending a little more for a skilled and reputable contractor can save you money in the long run. The renovation will have fewer, if any, "issues" (that may require an expensive fix) and will last longer.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Holiday Season!

Mission's

Float Registration Closes November 29th! Welcome to the annual family tradition by the Chamber of Commerce, where approx. 80 floats light up Mission’s Downtown with lights, music and of course Santa.

First Avenue in Mission will be closed, cleaned and decorated, in anticipation of the arrival of Santa Claus for the largest nighttime Christmas parade in B.C. The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is the host organization for this annual event , now in its 35th year. The parade officially begins at 7:30 pm when the first float will make its way west down First Avenue, but come by earlier to get a good view!

Up to 100 floats are expected this year to celebrate the merriest of seasons and to bring the community together in Christmas Spirit. This event would not happen if not for the generosity and support of the local businesses and community organizations. Yet, another reminder how important it is to shop local and support community groups.

Happy holidays!

SHOP LOCAL, LOVE LOCAL. That festive time of year is nearly upon us and we can’t wait! With so many opportunities to shop from the comfort of your own community, here is a reminder of some of the great gift ideas that can be found right on your doorstep, and allow you to support local businesses and make it a Merry Christmas for all in Mission. From classic long-standing businesses like Rex Cox Menswear and Lanka Jewels, to the new kids on the block Pressland General, and those unique to Mission like The Happy Homesteader, Silk Degrees, Goodie Too Shoes and Tea Time Décor, there is certainly no shortage of awesome gifts to be found. When you also add in our thriving artisan community, make sure to check out the Mission Arts Council and Spark Art Collective and the many Christmas markets highlighted in this edition of What’s On Magazine. Gift experiences are also on the rise, with many appreciating the chance to create new memories, so why not buy loved ones a trip on the Fraser River Safari, a pass for Sasquatch Mountain, a golf or fishing afternoon or an evening at Decode

Escape Rooms. Alternatively, a pampering session at a local hair, nail or massage salon, afternoon tea at the English Tarts or a dinner at a local restaurant - you get the idea! Make sure to drop into the Mission Visitor Centre for our Christmas Guide that includes events, craft markets and local light displays, plus we have created a “Made in Mission” retail section that offers a variety of local gifts. Featured are images from local photographer Bob Friesen, children’s books, and our very own Mission mugs.

Tourism Manager, District of Mission @tourismmission @tourismmissionBC service and have greater product knowledge • Reduce your carbon footprint • You are more likely to bump into friends and neighbours and build stronger relationships and improved wellbeing. • Small businesses keep the money in our economy – for every $100 spent in Mission $46 recirculates, compared to $18 in a chain store. Let’s make an early New Year’s resolution to keep it local this Christmas and “Shop Local – Love Local”.

Small businesses struggle to compete with the box stores at this time of year, but the unique products on offer and the service they provide make for a great shopping experience. BENEFITS OF SHOPPING LOCAL: • These businesses create and build the character of our community • Give local employment opportunities • Are more likely to support charities and community groups • Offer a more personalized customer

Mission Downtown Biz By Joanna McBride

Nicole and her story with Earthtacular is a spectacular example of ‘when opportunity knocks…’ It’s of someone who took opportunity by the tail and rolled with it. From where Nikki stands today, it looks like she made the right choice. Humble beginnings and being tagged in a simple wire wrapping job posting, Nikki is now the proud owner of Earthtacular, the gem store on our beloved Main Street in Mission. “Working here is fun,” she says. “I always knew that it was meant for me. It was in my cards.” Her passion lies with crystals and she believes that their power drastically changed her life for her benefit. In saying that, the new business didn’t come without its share of trials and tribulations. She began having to repair a previously damaged business reputation, not a lot of start-up funds and zero experience in running a business. Nothing could deter her determination. Nikki jumped right in with both feet. Earthtacular isn’t merely a place to buy crystals. There is fabulous, hand made art and Nikki is currently expanding in to a more metaphysical shop. Singing bowls, tarot and oracle, books and more. In addition, Earthtacular boasts a safe haven for anyone that walks through the front door. The door is always open to anyone that wants to come in. “Anybody… everybody… is welcome here.” Nikki explains that many people have forgotten their connection to the earth and to themselves. “There are so many directions to turn and shifts happening… new awakenings. We want to be there to help others along their journey and bring joy back in to their lives.” She smiles and continues, “So many people are out there searching for more. We are here to subdue worries, give you a shoulder to cry on and let everyone have the opportunity to just be themselves.” Being right in the heart of our downtown core, they love the sense of community surrounding them. They offer tarts readings, workshops in crafts, spiritual mindfulness and energy healing in different modalities, as well as ceremonies and weekly drum circles. Nikki is planning on changing the name from Earthtacular to The Natural World Crystals and Gifts. The new Grand Opening is set for the beginning of November… so be sure to watch for them on Facebook and save the date!
