Meet Aram Arzuman MAKING STRATEGIC MOVES FROM ARMENIA WE ARE CANADA … Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson
Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.” In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours … in hopes of becoming friends.
He was able to get one sent from home and in just a few months, learned not only how to use the computer, but also became a proficient typist. His superiors decided to allow him to handle administration and were amazed at the benefits of the computer. Aram eventually was able to develop and oversee an entire team of computer specialists.
Sometimes what’s required is a good chess move. There are situations where we can look toward the future, and with a degree of foresight, make a strategic move toward something different. It’s this kind of bold decision that’s made by most immigrants who come to Canada.
In 2002, Aram completed his military service and started learning diamond cutting, which his father had done for many years. By that point, his father had actually moved to Canada and was working in Yellowknife, NWT. Aram saw the potential for a good life in Canada, so he headed to Yellowknife himself in 2004.
For Aram Arzumanyan, chess moves have been a big part of his life. Born in 1982 in Armenia, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time, Aram tried playing different sports as a child. Then at the age of 7, he joined a club where he learned how to play chess, and it became a life-long passion! Aram became proficient in his newfound activity as he found that he really loved chess and played for hours each day. He loved the thinking process and the competition. Eventually that led to him competing in numerous tournaments and by the age of 15, he become the chess champion for his entire province. Champion, that is, for all ages! This chess master has discovered that the game has provided him with important life skills. “Learning chess has helped me with making decisions,” he stated. “It has taught me about strategy and forethought, so that I could look ahead easier and see the consequences for each possible move.” That skill was beneficial for Aram when, at age 18 he had to start service in the Armenian military. He trained to become a sniper, but eventually desired a different role. The army in his region of Armenia had no computers then, so Aram thought he would get a computer and show his superiors how it would help. But first he had to learn how to use a computer himself because he had never owned one.
While working and becoming highly skilled in the diamond business in Yellowknife, Aram also got married, and in 2011, the couple decided to move to Vancouver. Aram continued to work in the diamond and jewellery business here, even establishing his own company. Earlier this year, Aram made another strategic move that many people are doing these days. He decided to open a business doing something that he really loved. “I was sitting here in my local coffee shop and heard that it was closing down. So I enquired and was able to rent the space myself.” That same Brentwood location on Anola Drive is where he and his wife now operate a lovely café called Coffelicious. But Aram’s real passion has always been chess. So when another spot by the café became available, he again made the strategic move to acquire that location and open his own chess club! Launching in January, Lions Chess Club will afford Aram the opportunity to teach younger generations the skills that only a Chess Master can offer. As these young students learn chess, Aram is excited that they will also gain the skills to make strategic moves in life, just like he did!

LOCAL EDMONDS CAFÉ SHARING COMMUNITY AND QUALITY COFFEE I’ve seen passion before, in the usual things like politics, religion, and sports, but I’d never met anyone passionate about coffee. Yes, I’m familiar with the masses who are zealous to get their daily caffeine fix, but that’s mere addiction. Then recently, I sat down with Eric Hou, the owner of Caritas 9 Coffee Roasters on Edmonds Street, and I was overwhelmed by his zeal for coffee! Eric went into amazing detail about so many different aspects of the coffee process, right down to the coffee bean farmer and the handling of the beans. He discussed the respect that’s necessary to create a high quality product that brings out the delicate flavours in the various types of coffee. “Our aim,” he said, “is to be the bridge taking people from standard caffeine consumption to a superior cup of specialty coffee.” This unique café even offers classes to bring an increased understanding of the different origins and flavours of coffee. The classes are hands-on experiences where students learn about “pour over” techniques and other aspects of coffee brewing that will allow people to become baristas right in their own homes. Yet Caritas 9 Coffee Roasters is not just about teaching and serving coffee. Eric is also passionate about community, something that begins with his own staff. Each of the Caritas 9 team members is viewed more as a highly valued member of the family than a mere employee. “My team is amazing!” Eric smiled, “They all have great hearts and have a passion and desire to learn, to help people and improve people’s lives through their daily interactions, changing and making the world a better place. That, in essence, is what baristas should be, and our goal for the café is for people to come in to relax, to dream, to learn, to think, to feel welcomed, and leave with a smile.” The friendly crew of Caritas 9 have already created a warm atmosphere in the few months since Eric took over the café from the previous owners. They’ve had numerous pop-up events with a variety of musicians, several local bakers and even a local artist who came to hold an art event for children! Many other events are continually in the works as the team attempts to bring together different age groups and interests in the community.
Featuring over 70 local artists, crafters and artisan foods!

One of the café managers, Diana, explained, “Coffee is universal, and we want to be a place where the community can get together over some really flavourful, delicious coffee.” When asked about the café’s name, Eric explained. “‘Caritas’ means both ‘love’ and ‘beauty’. Our desire is to love all, love what we do and love our community. With love comes respect, growth and discovery of all those beautiful things in our lives.” Experience the warmth of the Caritas 9 Coffee Roasters community for yourself at #104-7655 Edmonds Street. NEW BUSINESS IN BURNABY By Gary Wilson
BURNABY HEIGHTS WELCOMES GLOBAL PET FOODS STORE A bright, shiny new pet food store has opened its doors in Burnaby Heights. Located in a beautiful 2,000 square foot location, Global Pet Foods might not be a widely recognized name in Burnaby. However, that’s sure to change with this store offering a huge diversity of premium products and a knowledgeable staff! Store owner Amelia Kleinschmidt has a passion for pet nutrition that is based on a love for her own pets. One of those is Frankie, a chihuahua-Jack Russell terrier cross, whom she playfully introduces as the “Assistant Manager”! Global Pet Foods might sound like an import from south of the border, but it’s actually 100% Canadian owned! Almost all their 190 stores are on Canadian soil. The food products feature high quality ingredients with respected brands such as Fromm, Origen & Acana, Primal, N&D, Stella & Chewy’s, Honest Kitchen and more than 30 others.

About LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic: With clinics across Canada, including right here in Burnaby, LIVE WELL's evidence-based programs are ideal for those with chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and for those seeking to prevent.
Here are some tips to help you PUT THIS KNOWLEDGE TO ACTION:
HEALTHY HABITS FOR LIVING WELL
HEART HEALTHY HABITS
• MAKE A DATE WITH EXERCISE. Create time in your schedule for exercise. By scheduling it into your calendar just as you would with any other important appointment, you will be in a better position to hold yourself accountable. Don’t forget to remind yourself that you are worth it, that you deserve this time to take care of yourself and that today’s investment will result in a better you for days to come. (For cardiovascular health, aim for the recommended guideline of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity per week).
Happy New Year Burnaby! Like many, you may be starting the new year asking yourself how you can make 2020 your healthiest year ever. You may also be wondering how you can achieve successful health outcomes for years to come. Finding success over the long term comes down to building healthy habits.
• BE PREPARED. This is the key to eating healthy. Healthy food options must be available and ready for you to eat. Make a meal plan, create a grocery list to stock the kitchen with the healthy food you need and prepare food ahead of time.
As a Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist, I work with all different kinds of people. My job is to show them how they can use lifestyle changes like diet and exercise to prevent, treat and manage their chronic health conditions and concerns.
• BE YOUR OWN HEALTH ADVOCATE. Be aware of the numbers that matter; blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels are important to know. Elevated levels for these risk factors often go undetected without testing as there are no symptoms associated with them. Consult with your doctor, get tested regularly and assure that you are in a healthy range.
with Ryley
February is Heart Month and heart disease is a chronic issue affecting many of my clients. Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada. However, DID YOU KNOW that half of heart disease deaths are caused by PREVENTABLE risk factors? That’s right! You do have some control over your risk of heart disease. So, what can you do to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease? Start by targeting these modifiable risk factors: physical inactivity, smoking, poor diet, alcohol abuse, and risk conditions including high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.
• COMMUNITY is KEY. As people reach longer periods of time in an exercise and lifestyle program, the most powerful motivator that keeps them going is community. A strong community can provide you with support and a place to ask for help when needed. We all need help sometimes. Make sure to continue picking up your copy of What’s On! Burnaby throughout 2020 and watch for our next segment of “Healthy Habits for Living Well” in the March/April issue.
NOW YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD THIS BEFORE! Most of us don’t need more education on how to live a healthy lifestyle. What we do need is support, focus and accountability to build healthier habits into our lives.
Ryley Carr (BSc KIN, ACSM-CEP), is a Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist. You can find Ryley changing lives at LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic.
