BRAZILIAN COUPLE ENJOY NEW CANADIAN LIFESTYLE WE ARE CANADA … Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.” In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours … in hopes of becoming friends.
For the great majority of us, we (or our parents or grandparents) came to Canada for a better life and more promising opportunities for our families. All around us in Burnaby, people are here who have done just that. Leo and Rebeca do Couto are prime examples. This couple left behind a law firm and their families in Brazil just two years ago, but they are already enjoying a whole new life here in Canada! Leo was born and raised in Goiania, a city of 2 million people located in central Brazil near the capital city of Brasilia. After completing his schooling, including a law degree in university, Leo moved north to the city of Palmas in the state of Tocantins. He established a law firm there in 2000, which eventually expanded to 8 offices throughout that state and also in the neighbouring state of Pará. Like Leo, Rebeca was born and raised in Goiania. Coincidentally, Rebeca also ended up moving to Palmas after her secondary schooling and worked for a few years in the financial department of the city. She then went to nursing school and worked for a few years as a nurse in a doctor’s office. Though their lives had followed somewhat similar paths, it wasn’t until 2012 that the two met and later, Rebeca started working in the financial department of Leo’s firm. During that time, Brazil went through a major financial crisis and because of their concerns over the dangerous conditions in their home country, they started looking elsewhere in the world where they could live and make a new home.
They travelled to Vancouver twice, in both summer and winter, before deciding that this was where they would live and work and raise their family. Then in 2017, they made the big move and left behind the law firm and both of their families and came to Canada. Of course, things are never that simple as they have had to go through the arduous process of gaining their Permanent Residency. Leo has had to get a job in business development and take tests in English, while Rebeca has returned to school at BCIT to study business management. While busy with these matters, they also purchased a restaurant on Hastings in Burnaby Heights just last year, Oui Coffee House. Their plan was to transform it into a Brazilian restaurant, and just a few months ago, Cafeoca Brazilian Bistro was born! It’s a work in progress, as the kitchen is still in process of being built and that means the cooking and baking has to be done elsewhere. They’re currently offering some tasty Brazilian snacks like coxinha, empadinha and empadão, along with Brazilian fruit juices and of course, amazing Brazilian coffee. However, they are working to complete the kitchen and hope to begin offering a full menu of Brazilian food very soon! In the midst of all these activities, Leo and Rebeca also welcomed a baby daughter into their home last year. They’re happy to be raising her in a city that they truly enjoy. They’ve been pleasantly surprised at the friendliness of the people here and of course, the politeness! They enjoy the nature that surrounds us. But perhaps most surprising for people from Brazil, they love the weather, as where they lived in their homeland was exceedingly hot. It appears that this couple are well on their way to making Canada and Burnaby a place for new dreams, opportunities and a lifestyle that they can enjoy as they raise their family in this community and country that they now call home.

LOCAL CAR DEALERSHIP PUTTING “COMMUNITY” IN AUTO SALES FOR 28 YEARS Visiting Community Auto Sales on Kingsway in South Burnaby is a walk down memory lane for me. I think of the trips with my dad to his trusted used car dealership. We’d wander around the garage and look at the deals. My dad would chat with Jack, the car dealer, about the numbers and the different vehicles. There would sometimes be a test drive. And eventually, my dad would buy a car from Jack. It was always a good, solid car, not just because cars were better built back then, but because Jack was a solid guy who stood behind his vehicles.
Community AUTO SALES Celebrating 28 Years OPEN SUNDAY 12-5 RENT TO OWN! In-House Financing!
Jason #8076
So when I first walked into Community Auto Sales, I had a rush of fond memories. It was the same no-frills garage, a place where a guy could feel right at home as sports blared from the television and the multiple hockey jerseys ringed all four walls of the room.

I met Jason Dobmeier, the owner of Community Sales, and Kevin De Paulo, the salesman. These were guys who liked to shoot the breeze just like Jack did with my dad! After talking more with Jason, I learned that this dealership had a lot of family history behind it! Jason’s dad, Roger, started Community Sales back in 1991. They were on Hastings in North Burnaby then. Roger, who passed away suddenly two years ago, had worked for other car dealerships prior to launching out on his own. He wanted to provide the kind of customer service that was slipping away in the industry. Roger taught Jason that “Trust is the key” and that “the aim should never be to simply sell a car, but to take care of a family.” Now I understood why this place seemed so familiar. Roger taught Jason everything he knew about cars and customer service. Jason was in it from the very beginning. He says, “I sold my first car when I was 10 years old, a Volkswagen Beetle.” Since then, of course, Jason has sold thousands of cars. Because he’s been at it for so long, Jason has actually sold to generations, to parents with a baby and then to that baby many years later! After about 10 years in operation, now in their location on Kingsway, Community Sales started a “rent-to-own” program, providing financing to buyers who didn’t have the best credit. They still offer that program, taking 20% down and qualifying virtually everyone. Jason has a heart for people who get stuck in bad car loan situations and has even gone to bat for them! However, it’s the consistent service Jason provides that reminds me so much of Jack. Community Sales has a mechanic who inspects their vehicles and looks after them once they’re sold. As Jason says, “I back up the vehicles I sell. And the trust I offer is what keeps people coming back!” Now that’s a car dealer that Jack would be proud of!

MULBERRY PARC SENIORS KNITTING FOR A CAUSE With gift-giving season upon us, we recently witnessed one outstanding example of giving right here in Burnaby. It was a room full of ladies who are part of a Knitting Group at Mulberry PARC Retirement Residence in South Burnaby. The group, known as “Knitting for a Cause”, was formed 10 years ago by one of the Mulberry residents, Marie Klassen. Her idea was to get residents out of their rooms and do something positive for the community. She asked for a meeting and while some expected just 2 or 3 to show up, Marie
who are immigrants and aren’t used to colder climates. They’re also provided to a women’s shelter, other seniors who are in need, and even to sailors through an organization that works with seafarers.
says, “The women just kept coming in the door and about 20 came to that first meeting.” Marie shared her vision with the ladies that everything they made would go to charity, and for the past 10 years that’s exactly what’s happened! Marie says that literally thousands of items have been made over the years. “We make about 600-800 articles each year. There’s scarves, toques, shawls, afghans, baby items and so much more.” The group meets each Thursday for some fun knitting time together, but they all keep busy knitting on their own! Items created are given to schools for children, especially those
