Sixteen applicants chosen for Applicant Showcase Night Chilliwack, BC – A record number of applicants put their names forward to speak at TEDxChilliwack. To narrow the list of potential speakers, the organizing committee sifted through dozens and dozens of applications to select sixteen people to audition for a coveted spot at the TEDxChilliwack main stage on April 11, 2020. To make it to the audition stage, organizers looked for speakers who have an “idea worth spreading”. Previously, TEDx speakers’ talks had to focus on Technology, Entertainment or Design. For 2020, organizers widened the focus to include 19 different topics—from health, nature or the environment to business, science or collaboration—and everything in-between. Auditions will take place at the Applicant Showcase Night on January 23, 2020 at Cowork Chilliwack. Each invited applicant will take the stage for four minutes each. Each will explain what their “idea worth spreading” is, why they are qualified to speak on it, and how they would encourage TEDxChilliwack attendees to take action. Following their four-minute synopsis, each speaker will be posed a question from the emcees.
Once all 16 speakers have taken their turn, the studio audience will vote for “The People’s Choice”. At the same time, a speaker selection panel of TEDxChilliwack organizing committee members will choose up to five additional applicants to join the People’s Choice winner in moving on to speak at TEDxChilliwack’s main event on April 11, 2020 at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Due to demand, Applicant Showcase Night tickets will be available through a lottery system. Interested parties can apply to earn a free ticket through the TEDxChilliwack website until January 1. Ticket lottery winners will be notified in early January. For more information about the TEDxChilliwack Applicant Showcase Night, including taking part in the ticket lottery, please go to www.tedxchilliwack.com/showcase.
The first TEDxChilliwack event took place in 2016. Each year since, the organizing committee has refined and improved on the process of finding, selecting and supporting potential speakers. TEDxChilliwack has attracted hundreds of nascent and experienced speakers and more than 70 have been selected to give engaging talks on an array of subjects related to the year’s theme. With this year’s theme, “Clarity”, TEDxChilliwack will give audiences an elevated experience with top-quality speakers at a unique event. TEDxChilliwack (www.tedxchilliwack.com) is a not-for-profit, annual one-day event held in Chilliwack, British Columbia. Come hear live speakers share innovative and optimistic ideas with a community of open and curious minds searching for ways to make a difference. TEDxChilliwack is independently organized and operated under a license from TED.

A New Year’s Message from the Mayor Happy New Year, Chilliwack! Looking back, 2019 was a big year for our city. We opened some amazing new parks, including Lexw Qwò:m and Kensington, we increased fines for illegal dumping, completed the Lickman Interchange Project and established the Integrated Community Safety Task Force. Teamwork played a major role in our 2019 achievements. We completed the 20km Vedder Rotary Loop Trail, thanks, in part, to the Rotary Club of Chilliwack, and the Chilliwack Chiefs helped us sell out the grand opening of the Sardis Sports Complex. Thanks to the Province and BC Housing, two modular housing facilities opened in Chilliwack, and with Skwah First Nation, Shxwhá:y Village and the Federal Government, we announced the Town Dyke Upgrade project. We’re not going to stop here. This year, we have more exciting projects planned to better our community. Major transportation improvements to Vedder, Promontory and Prest Roads are slated to begin. To become better stewards of our environment, we’ll be developing a singleuse item reduction strategy and updating our Climate Action Plans. We will launch the Mayor’s Task Force on Inclusivity, Diversity and Accessibility and we will continue building relationships with our First Nations neighbours. I’d like to end by thanking you, the citizens of Chilliwack. To anyone who has called, emailed, taken a survey, attended a Public Hearing or engagement meeting – thank you. We appreciate your voices and your passion, and will make sure to offer more opportunities to hear from you in the New Year. Sincerely,
Mayor Ken Popove

Ask an Expert with Sarah Q: What is branding and why does my business need it? A: Well, it’s always good to go straight in with the big questions, right? Branding, contrary to popular belief, is not just your logo, or your business name, or your mark seared into a cow’s rump! Sure, those things are all part of branding (ok, the last one might not be so much for our purposes here…). But branding is an umbrella term, a global name we use for what is, ultimately, a feeling or a perception our clients, future clients, visitors, readers to our website and so on all get from what we put out and share about our businesses.
do. The way you talk, or your voice, in your blog posts and on social media. It’s the images you put out there to show who you are and what you do. It’s even your behaviour, the way you interact with the public, your charitable donations and so on. All these things develop a perception, a picture in the minds of the people looking at your outputs and influences the way they think about you and your business. So, why does your business need a brand? Because building that perception, that distinct look around your business, builds recognition and trust. It’s what keeps people coming back to you, time and again, and what encourages them to refer you to others.
Absolutely, your logo is part of your brand. But so are the colours you use consistently across every part of your business. The fonts you use on your And those can only be good things, right? website and marketing materials. It’s also the specific words you choose to describe what you
