From left, Derek Barnett, Dann Wilhelm, Andy Rolleman and Dianna Fast  Photo Credit - Robert Kenney A mother, a daughter, three possible dads and a trip down the aisle . . . what could possibly go wrong? Join us on a Greek island paradise in February for Mamma Mia! a story of love, friendship and identity cleverly told through the timeless music of ABBA. “It's a toe-tapping jukebox musical with many familiar songs,” says Director Sharla Sauder, a veteran of Fraser Valley Stage. “Mamma Mia! had a 14-year run on Broadway. There's a reason for that.” The large cast of actors from all over the Lower Mainland makes it all work. “There is such strong talent. (We) couldn't believe our luck, finding such a talented, enthusiastic group of people,” adds Sauder. “People who sing and dance and act are so hard to come by.” Debbie Calicetto, founder of Can Dance Studio in Mission, has choreographed musical numbers for over 30 years in the Fraser Valley and she knows her stuff. “In this year’s production of Mamma Mia! we have taken the choreography to some new heights; glam disco, fun beach scenes and ABBA tunes that will have you dancing along as you sing in your seats. Over 20 dancers fill the stage with musical numbers that will keep you smiling from beginning to end.” Set on a Greek island, ABBA's hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

10

“The show features some well-known FVS members and welcomes for the first time several new talented personalities to the FVS family,” says Producer Margaret Kennedy. New this year to Fraser Valley Stage are Samantha Silver, who plays bride-to-be Sophie, and Dianna Fast as her mom Donna. “Audiences are going to be amazed, truly,” says Fast. “The talent is very high caliber - it's practically professional only we are all volunteers! What a great group to be a part of.” The three dads who arrive on scene just in time for the big day are Andy Rolleman (Sam), Dann Wilhelm (Bill) and Derek Barnett (Harry). Groom-to-be, Alistair Hart as Sky, dances his way into the heart of Sophie as well as the audience. Other prominent cast members include: Kelly Shackleford, Brittany Kliewer, Stephanie Anderson, Leina DeBoer, Brad Dewar and Brady Moore in addition to a large chorus. Over 60 million people worldwide have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show.

Garden View This issue – Sniff! Sniff! No I don’t have a cold but this month I will be sniffing a lot. Mainly because of my winter flowering shrubs. Every garden should have a couple of plants which bravely open their petals while winter is doing its worst. Viburnum farreri or Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ or ‘Deben’ are upright shrubs which bear pretty clusters of pink-buds on their bare branches, that open into honey-scented white flowers. They are incredibly tough, withstanding all but the harshest of frost. It’s lovely to cut a few sprigs to stand in a jam jar indoors.

18

My favourite winter flowering shrub is the witch hazel plant Hamamelis mollis. It’s a delightful shuttlecock-shaped bush that explodes with citrus scented spidery flowers right about now. I have the orange ‘Jelena’ in my garden but the pale yellow ‘Pallida’ and the deep red ‘Ruby Glow’ are equally lovely. My dad had a wonderful winterflowering honeysuckle in his garden: Lonicera fragrantissima, which I adored. A few years ago I discovered Lonicera x purpussi and fell in love. It has creamy white flowers and a really strong scent.

Even if you have a tiny garden you’ll have room for a Christmas Box Sarcococca confusa. It produces white whiskery flowers from among its dark shiny evergreen foliage. I have two in pots on either side of my path and I’ve had people stop in their tracks and return back towards the house sniffing, in search of the source of the amazing sweet, heady scent. And don’t forget that there are scented snowdrops and tiny Iris reticulata which are deliciously perfumed too. Time to get sniffing. Happy gardening! Rachael Leverton

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2020

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

From the beginning of the year, Capricorn should focus on long-term goals. January gives you a large dose of discipline, so there is an opportunity to achieve your goals. Others will perhaps look up to you, so be careful, it could go to your head- pride comes before a fall. February will be full of energy for Capricorns. You’ll emit your positive aura to your surroundings which will attract a lot of interesting people.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

Aquarius is surrounded by new discoveries and experiences from the beginning of the New Year. If you are single, January will probably bring you a new acquaintance. There is more independence and self-reliance about you in February. You have things your own way and shouldn’t settle for less. This does not mean running roughshod over others though. It means that if others don’t go along you can create your own conditions as you like them.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

Pisces can expect calm and balance in the beginning of the year. January brings you a flurry of positive energy, which you can best utilize in your work. Superiors notice your effort, enthusiasm and diligence. February will also bring a positive energy into the area of relationships. Pisces will flow through relationships with no trouble and completely naturally. It will be very easy for you to establish contacts. You definitely shouldn’t overlook problems with your backs though, rather go see a neurologist or therapist.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

January brings you lots of interesting events, even some work opportunities, which you must grab immediately. Although Libra’s main trait of character is indecision, in this case it doesn’t pay, so don’t hesitate! Long-term relationships will thrive in February. It is definitely not worth helping somebody, who doesn’t want it though. You can use your energy in much better ways. You have a lot of energy; try to do something for your body with sports. You will see that you will feel better.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) Scorpio can expect that to spend the beginning of the year in a calm mood. Moments which you appreciate the most are moments spent

alone, so you try to search for them for the entire month of January. Don’t be afraid to make use of the career benefits that February provides. You will need to speed up the working pace. According to the horoscope, you won’t lack motivation and when you persevere in the pursuit of your goal, it will soon be at your reach.

Sagittarius (November 22 December 21) Sagittarius should be prepared for the reality that you need to make lots of important decisions. If you were thinking about changing your job, January is the best time to do that. But be level-headed, otherwise you could regret your decision. Sagittarius should make good use of February, for example, for self-education, take the time to educate yourself. You will spend your free time mainly with your partner or family. You’ll feel the best when with them. Don’t be sad or angry if you can’t complete the task. This can happen to anyone.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

With the beginning of the year, you desire to get to know something new. Every cancer can look forward to a January full of unexpected events and intense emotions. However, your pervasive ego stands in your way, so you try to hide your feelings from others. In February, every Cancer can be looking forward to harmony when it comes to relationships. If there’s some minor disputes between you and your partner, they will be solved quickly. You will also enjoy good health this month, it’s enough not to underestimate prevention. Taking a hot bath will be an excellent way of relaxation for you. Respect your body, you cannot last forever in this highly set pace.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

At the beginning of the year, you feel a little bit slowed down. Don’t worry, you can focus on relationships where you can expect a big success. When it comes to communication, in January, you will feel a strong desire to stand for what you believe in, but make sure to be diplomatic! Home and domestic issues take priority over your career in February. But be careful about investments, major purchases and financial commitments. Make sure that you have enough in the bank to cover basic expenses so payment delays will not affect you.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

January should be full of career successes for everybody born in the sign of Virgo. Achieving goals for Virgo is very easy and your initiative and professionalism will be noted - there may be a promotion in the air. In the area of relationships, Virgo will enjoy a positive period in February. Thanks to the great position of the stars, single people, as well as those in a relationship, will do well. You can also rely on your family and closest friends. If you’re in need, they’ll lend you a helping hand. Don’t forget to return this favour if needed.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

January brings to all people born in the sign of Aries a lot of experiences, mainly in career. Aries will abound with many original ideas. Use them to your advantage and your efforts will surely pay off in the future. February promises a fruitful period to Aries. You just have to split up your energy correctly. Your moral aspects will be very strong, which guarantees honest behaviour in any situation. People will come to you for advice. Try not to reject them, your kindness will be returned to you multiple times.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

At the beginning of a New Year, every Taurus is captured by the desire for new information and education. Thanks to that, there is a good chance that January brings you someone who has similar hobbies and interests as yours. There is no major love in the stars; nevertheless, you will spend quality time with that person. In February, Taurus should invest their energy in to your physique. After the holidays, that you lived through with peace, your body really deserves that. Furthermore, you’ll release stress as well.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

There’s a problem in love in January… you will have too many opportunities rather than too few! Jealousies and competitiveness are stirred up. Career and love conflict this January for Gemini. Both are important and pull you in opposite directions. You will have to balance them and make them cooperate with each other. Career and outward success are very important in February, so if you keep your focus and don’t try to do too many things you will meet with success. You are a social creature this month, developing and practising your social graces.

Horoscopes are a fun way to learn more about yourself but should be used for entertainment purposes only.
