Forever Plaid Comes to Abbotsford Once upon a time, there were four guys (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) who discovered they shared a love for music and got together to become their idols – The Four Freshmen, The Hi-Lo’s and the Crew Cuts. Rehearsing in the basement of Smudge’s family’s plumbing supply company, they became “Forever Plaid.” On the way to their first big gig, the “Plaids” are broadsided by a school bus and killed instantly. It is at the moment when their careers and lives end that the story of Forever Plaid begins.... Singing in close harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with overzealous precision, the “Plaids” will have you rolling in the aisles and humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s and 60s.

20

“I first saw Forever Plaid about 25 years ago when I was in high school,” says Director Dann Wilhelm. “I instantly fell in love with its amazing harmonies, goofball comedy and innocent nostalgia.” In 2016 Wilhelm was cast as Frankie in a production for Vagabond Players in New Westminster. “I am ecstatic to be back not only directing this delightful musical for Fraser Valley Stage, but also reprising my role as Frankie, along with my Forever Plaid alumni.” Complete with a bloody nose, asthma attack and adorable awkwardness throughout the production, the humour of Forever Plaid is found in the authentic feeling that we are truly watching four self-conscious young men try to remember lyrics, cues, and the moves and routines that accompany the music for their debut concert, says Producer Al Pattison.

Jake Hildebrand, Dann Wilhelm, To advertise Christopher Hall, Bradley Dewar

“The quartet's perfected goofiness and appropriate stiffness take a backseat when the first notes waft through the theatre,” added Pattison. “The voices are absolutely incredible, whether flawlessly blending together or soloing. I believe our audiences are going to love the show, especially when the men sing acapella in perfect harmony.” Rounding out the cast are two fine musicians who will be onstage to accompany the Plaids; on piano Mel Bowker tickles the ivories while Issac Harvey keeps the music flowing on stand-up bass. Forever Plaid will be playing Oct. 10 – 12 and 17 – 19 at the Community Arts Addition, 2329 Crescent Way, Abbotsford. For details visit fraservalleystage.com for ticket information and show times. Gallery 7 Theatre Opens “Ordinary Heroes” Theatre Season with Abby Theatre Fest Gallery 7 Theatre will launch its 29th annual season of theatre with their third annual Abby Theatre Fest, an exciting festival of one-act plays featuring six entertaining stories that will explore a variety of thought-provoking themes. Running October 2 - 5, 2019, the Festival will be held at the Yale Secondary School Theatre in Abbotsford. “I’m really excited about this year’s line-up of short plays,” says Ken Hildebrandt, executive artistic director of Gallery 7 Theatre. “Of the six plays we’re presenting this year, four are written by playwrights from the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland. In keeping with the tradition of this fringestyle festival, all of the shows will take some risks in terms of story, artistry and thematic content.” While the plays will explore more mature themes, Hildebrandt indicates that the shows still fit with the mandate of theatre. “Our mandate is to explore the human experience with a vision towards hope, reconciliation and redemption. Abby Theatre Fest allows us to produce works that are more edgy and stretch artistic limits but may not find a home on our mainstage. The plays are just as compatible with who we are as a theatre organization, and the festival allows us to have fun with a lesser produced theatrical format that is the one-act, short play.” Hildebrandt is quick to add that there is a lot more to Abby Theatre Fest than just the plays. “Abby Theatre Fest gives emerging and established directors, playwrights, performers and theatre artists from through-out the region a chance to explore and develop their talents,” he says. “Three shows will receive their world premiere at the festival.”

This shows to be presented at this year’s festival include: • Letters to Myself, an original play written and performed by Ryan Scramstad • Space Junk, a new comedy written and directed by Chilliwack playwright, Eldon Letkeman • Relative Strangers, a play by Sheri Wilner and directed by Chris Taylor. • Hello Out There, written by William Saroyan and directed by Shelley Picard. • The Wake of Leroy McGuinness¸ an original comedy by Abbotsford playwrights, The Brothers Hanly, and directed by Sue Backs. • Don’t Forget to Dress the Dummies, a new comedy by Lower Mainland playwrights, Dianna Fast and Heather Tekavec and directed by Dianna Fast. “There’s lots of great heart, soul and mind theatre at this year’s festival. I encourage everyone to come out and show their support for locally grown, locally developed and locally produced live theatre!” Hildebrandt continues. “I think audiences are in for a fun and entertaining theatre experience that will also challenge and inspire.” All shows will run all days of the festival though start times will vary from day to day. For full details on each show, including language warnings and start times, as well as on how to purchase tickets, please visit www. gallery7theatre.com. Individual shows are $15.00/person, or you can purchase a festival pass that includes admission to all 6 shows for $45.00. The festival will be held at the Yale Secondary School Theatre, 34620 Old Yale Road in Abbotsford.

Spooky Stuffed Peppers

Ingredients 4 Orange peppers 1 cup / 200g Cooked brown rice 1 tbsp Sunflower oil 450g Yves soy ground round 1 Medium onion finely chopped 2 1/8th cup / 225g Mixed mushrooms, chopped 1/2 a 650 ml jar roasted red pepper pasta sauce 1 tsp Dried oregano ¼ tsp Chilli flakes Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Serves: 4 - Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 25 mins

For the pepper lanterns Preheat the oven to 350F / Gas Mark 4. Use a sharp knife to slice the top off each pepper horizontally. Don’t discard these tops as they will be the little hats for the pepper lanterns. Deseed the peppers. Rinse and pat dry with kitchen towel. Use a small paring knife to cut holes into the exterior of the peppers to make pumpkin lantern style faces. If the peppers don’t stand upright, slice a small amount from the bottom to flatten the surface. Cook rice according to package directions. Lightly oil a baking tray. Arrange the peppers and their tops on the tray and cook in the oven for 20 minutes, or until peppers are cooked, but still firm. They mustn’t collapse! Remove peppers from oven and allow to cool while you make the filling. For the filling Heat 1 tbsp oil in large frying pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and mushrooms, sauté for 3-4 minutes, until the mushrooms have softened and reduced in size. Increase the heat to medium-high. Add teh Eyves soy ground round, herbs and chilli flakes and continue to cook, stirring occasionally until browned. Drain the excess oil. Reduce heat to low, then add the pepper sauce and cooked rice. Stir to combine and cook for 2-3 more minutes, or until mixture is heated through.

Fill each pepper to the brim, allow the mixture to spill over slightly. Place a top on to each stuffed pepper and serve with green salad. To advertise call 604.349.0886 or e-mail whatsonabbotsford@gmail.com
