ASK AN EXPERT @kymmshairdesign
WITH KYMM STYLING TRICKS FOR FINE/THIN HAIR Fine, thin hair needs all the help it can get and the process should start at the wash. The products you use should be lightweight and volumizing. I recommend the Design.Me Puff.Me volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Also, remember to only use conditioner on the mid length to endstoo much softness at the scalp will make it limp and lifeless. If you find you have product build up that weighs your hair down, use a clarifying shampoo once or twice a week. Apply a volumizing mousse or spray on damp hair, from roots to ends. I love the Bain de Terre Rise 'n Shine volumizing foam or the Design.Me Lift.Me volumizing mousse. Make sure you apply to the ends, not just at the roots, so the style holds throughout! Always blow-dry! Most volumizing products are heat activated. Flip your head upside-down and get the oomph at the roots first. Make sure the blowdryer is pointing down the hair shaft or you'll create unwanted frizz. When the hair is almost dry, flip back up and use a ceramic round brush to smooth and add style. Finish with a texturizing spray, not a firm hold hairspray, to add grit and hold. I love the Oligo or the Design.me Dry Texturizing sprays. If you find your style has fallen throughout the day, turn your head upside down and massage your head and fluff it up again! Volumizing powder is another option to add thickness and hold. Highlights are a great way to add texture and volume to fine hair. Bleach stiffens and swells the hair, helping to add volume and thickness, and helps hold a voluminous style longer. Backcombing is another trick to help fine hair have and hold volume! Be careful combing it out- fine hair is very fragile. I LOVE using my mini crimper to add tremendous volume to fine hair! Extensions are another great way to add thickness and volumetheyʼre not just to add length! Come see me for your custom consultation.

Early Christians adopted them too and imbued holly particularly with Christian symbolism. In the carol, ivy isn’t actually mentioned again until the last verse which is a repeat of the first. It has a cameo role because of earlier songs, such as ‘The Contest of The Ivy and The Holly,’ in which the attributes of holly (male) and ivy (female) are compared. Our ancestors lived
close to the earth and the seasons and were open to symbolism. As modern gardeners we might be sceptical of the symbolism, but we can embrace the glory of these seasonal plants. Ivy (Hedera) comes in many sizes, from the tiny-leaved ‘Spetchley’ to the hand-sized leaves of ‘Maple Leaf’. It also comes in a beautiful variety of colours from the rich green, crimped leaves of ‘Parsley crested’ which makes great ground cover, to the gorgeous red-stemmed yellow leaves of the climber ‘Sunrise’. For winter baskets I’d recommend the lime-green ‘Ursula’ and her grey-leaved friend ‘Frederick’. Ivy is a doddle to grow. There are only a few things to remember. Cut it back in spring to encourage new growth and take cuttings between October and March when the growth is woody. Yellow varieties need sunshine and don’t let any of it grow into your eaves. Other than that, it is your undemanding gardening friend. Holly (Ilex) is pretty easy-going too. It will grow almost anywhere except really water-logged soil. It’s tolerant of pollution, salt and wind and grows really slowly, so it’s great for small gardens in the city and by the sea.

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood the holly bears the crown.
you have to and remove plain green shoots on variegated varieties. Take cuttings in the late summer or autumn. It does resent root disturbance once it’s established so plant it in the right place first time. Hollies are male or female but not necessarily named to help, so ‘Silver Queen’ is actually male and ‘Martin’ is female! You’ll need both for berries so talk to your nurseryman to be sure. If you only have room for one, grow a self-fertile variety such as ‘J C Van Tol’.

Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 40-45 mins Serves: 6-8
Method Preheat the oven to 375F / Gas 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Mix the quartered apples with the cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 1/8 cup / 20g / ¾oz butter and fry the breadcrumbs until goldenbrown, then add these to the apple mixture. Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet of the filo and brush with some of the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all the filo. Layering the pastry with the melted butter helps to create flaky layers. Place the filling along the length of the pastry along one side about 1 inch / 2-3cm from the edge. Using the tea-towel to help you, roll the pastry up to enclose the filling. Tuck the ends in and roll the strudel seam-side down onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden-brown. Leave to cool to room temperature and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or custard.

Sugar Cookie Frosting
What you will need for Sugar Cookies:
What you will need for Frosting:
• 1 egg • 1 tsp vanilla • 1 cup salted butter • 3 cups all purpose flour • 1 cup granulated sugar • 2 tsp baking powder
• 1/4 cup butter, room temperature • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening • 3 cups powdered sugar • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 1 1/2 tbsp milk
What you will do: Use stand mixer OR an electric hand mixer. Cream the butter and sugar together (approx. 2 mins). Add the egg, vanilla, flour and baking powder. Mix until the dough comes together. (Consistency as play-doh). Too dry? Add a bit of water. Too wet? Add some flour. Roll out the dough on a floured surface about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut with different shaped cookie cutters. Place on cookie sheet. Put in oven (325 ° F) and take them out of the oven after approximately 12-15 minutes. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack.
What you will do: Combine all ingredients in the bowl of a mixer. Whip until well combined. You can add more powdered sugar or milk to get the frosting to the consistency you like. Put smaller portions into small containers and add different food coloring to each container. Mix well. Now you are ready to decorate your Sugar Cookies! Have FUN!
