60,000 people are coming,

where will they live? As part of the City’s Official Community Plan (OCP) update named Abbotsforward, we’re planning for a city of 200,000 residents. This means growing our population by 60,000. Abbotsforward is organized in four stages. In Stage 1 we studied Abbotsford’s current condition and made several observations to address in the new OCP. In Stage 2 we went out into the community to hear what your vision for Abbotsford’s future is and received over 4,000 interactions! These helped us create 7 Big Ideas that we showcased at our Big Ideas Fair in Historic Downtown on June 12 and 13. Now in Stage 3, we’re beginning to prepare a draft OCP and we need your help again!

To make sure Abbotsford remains a great place to live with diverse jobs and many recreation opportunities, we’ll be asking you where and how we should accommodate the next 60,000 residents. With three different ways to grow, you’ll have a chance to tell us more specifically how you want Abbotsford to evolve. In 'BMM, look for our Road Show events with Planners in pink shirts, take an interactive Online Survey, join us on a Neighbourhood Walk and organize your own Citizen Circle! Merry Christmas from What’s On! Abbotsford PUBLISHER’S NOTE During the last few months we have been taking time to discover all the wonderful events taking place in Abbotsford, and meeting all the local people who organize, volunteer and work hard to make the city a vibrant, busy place. At first brush with people we would meet, we found that the conversation would often turn to the fact that they maintained nothing ever happens in Abbotsford!

We would like to send out a Happy New Year greeting to all the hard volunteers However, as we made our way around the community, and working who bring so much made contact with the folks who run various organizations and institutions, we found nothing could be further from the to the city, making it truth! Abbotsford is teeming with events, artists, performers a truly magnificent place to live and delightful diversions to keep one constantly busy. and work. The latest edition of What’s On Magazine Abbotsford is packed with places to go and see live theatre productions, 2016 is going to brilliant. local and international musicians, artisan markets and ongoing events that happen almost every night of the month! In September we thoroughly enjoyed discovering some unique and charming businesses in the Historic Downtown and meeting the energetic business owners who threw open their doors for the Art and Wine Walk. The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Tournament featured bright sunny skies, and the chance to meet a number of local company owners and employees as they wound their way around the spectacular Ledgeview Golf Course.

Cory & Bronwen

The next two months are shaping up to be busier! With the arrival of the Christmas season there are so many ways to celebrate not only the holidays, but living in Abbotsford, truly a city in the country! 25th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting in Historic Downtown Abbotsford Hard to believe that the Christmas season is upon us. It seems like just yesterday we were holding a Kazoo sing-a-long at the 25th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting in Historic Downtown Abbotsford. What started out as a shared dream of three friends and Aldermen of the Village of Abbotsford has turned into a long-standing and multigenerational tradition for so many families. During the early spring of 1947 on a Sunday morning, three Alderman, Vic Tessaro, Ted Galbraith and Len Saxbee, drove to the Abbotsford Airport and uprooted a two IRRW 'RXJODV Ă€ U 7KDW¡V ULJKW ZKDW LV QRZ RYHU IHHW WDOO LV WKDW WZR IRRW WUHH WKH\ dug up in 1947.

Tina Stewart, Executive Director

Vic, who operated an Esso Service Station located at the junction of Montvue and West Railway St., felt the Village of Abbotsford desperately needed a Christmas tree for future years. That idea got the three friends thinking and planning on where the tree should come from and where it would best serve the community. The three made their way to what we now know as Abbotsford International Airport (YXX), and found the perfect little tree to transplant.

Business Matters Small business in B.C. makes up almost one third of the province’s economy. As a result, it is imperative that the needs and concerns of this important sector are represented to senior levels of government when creating legislation and policy affecting the business community. As the “Voice of Business” it is imperative that we communicate on a continuous basis with municipal, regional, provincial and federal levels of government and act as an advocate, not just for our members, but on behalf of all business in the community. As an example, the Chamber approached the City ZLWK D OLVW RI VSHFLÀ F LQLWLDWLYHV WR ERRVW ORFDO EXVLQHVV This resulted in our participation in the “Mayor’s Task Force on Economic Prosperity” which delivered an Economic Development Action Plan to Council. One of the initiatives acted on in this report was the creation of a more autonomous Economic Development Department in the City to direct business expansion and retention.

These are just a few examples of action taken by the Abbotsford Chamber in its role as an advocate for business. Moving forward, the Chamber is working on a number of initiatives to create more engagement with members to identifying priority concerns and effective solutions to enhance the success of business in Abbotsford. Starting in October, watch for a new monthly Chamber publication titled “BUSINESS MATTERS”, which will discuss issues and ideas affecting business and detail the current advocacy activities of the Abbotsford Chamber.

Allan Asaph, Executive Director, Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce

More recently, the Chamber vigorously opposed preliminary changes to local ridings recommended by the Provincial Electoral Boundaries Commission. Our detailed submission to the Commission, which was echoed by the City and other stakeholders in the community, resulted in changes in the Final Report that will preserve our strong local representation in Victoria.

Rocky Lawrence the Consummate Blues Man Contributing Writer: Greg Keffer, Fraser Valley Blues Society • Photo: Dianne Dunklau

Rocky Lawrence is the walking, talking reincarnation of the great delta blues guitarist Robert Johnson. REMEMBRANCE DAY November 11th The poppy IS:

The poppy is NOT:

• A symbol of Remembrance and hope • Worn by millions of people • Red because of the natural colour of field poppies

• A symbol of death or a sign of support for war • A reflection of politics or religion • Red to reflect the colour of blood

Wearing a poppy is a personal choice and reflects individual and personal memories. It is not compulsory but is greatly appreciated by those it helps – our beneficiaries: those currently serving in our Armed Forces, veterans, and their families and dependants.

Join Us for our Remembrance Day service being held at Thunderbird Square, Veterans’ Way, November 11th, parade to start around 10:30; Remembrance Service begins at 11am.

Please support the 2015 Poppy Campaign Our mission is to serve Veterans, which includes serving military and RCMP members and their families; to promote Remembrance; and to serve our communities and our country. The Legion is a big part of many communities. Legion members volunteer their time to help local Veterans and charitable organizations. We’re here to help. The Legionnaires of Abbotsford are proud of their accomplishments and their service to our Veterans in our community. The executive and membership of the Abbotsford Legion would like to extend an invitation to everyone to come visit us. Find out first-hand what today’s Legion is all about and how you can help us. To see What’s On at Branch 15, please refer to the recurring events section of this magazine.
