It is actually through Angela Andersen that I came to be co-owner of What’s On! Port Coquitlam. Angela had always been someone I admired and looked up to, and even since investing in the magazine I feel like I have learned so much from her, not only in business, but also on a personal level. Her positive “can do” attitude, willingness to always help others, and example of how to manifest good in the future are some of her most incredible attributes. And they are ones I hope I emulate well through my involvement with the magazine. I began considering investing in What’s On when Angela learned about the opportunity and shared it with me. The two of us got very excited as we were both members of Rotary, and we felt it would be an excellent platform to further do good by enabling us to showcase not-for-profits and to increase awareness for various needs in the community. We made the decision to invest in the magazine together, and doing so has made me even more grateful to be able to call Angela my friend and mentor. And it has also made me grateful for the chance to fulfill our vision of the business. What’s On! Port Coquitlam was created to be a platform to increase awareness of events, not-for-profits and local businesses. Above all, this magazine is a tool to share everything local... and in my case, that especially means friendship.
We welcome your article submissions. To make this a great community resource we encourage all to submit articles and non profit profiles relating to our community. Please note that all submissions will be edited and formatted. For information on the specific requirements please email Angela or Leah.

GUT CHECK!
Why you should care about your gut health Not long ago I had no idea what gut health was. I had never even heard of such a thing. But then I got very sick and was eventually diagnosed with celiac disease. This began my journey to heal and I finally realized that the only way to heal my body from years of damage from not being diagnosed was to heal my gut. Heal my gut; improve my health; change my life.
è Extreme fatigue è Foggy brain è Skin rashes è Joint pain
So why should you care about your gut health? Well as Hippocrates said many, many years ago ‘All disease begins in the gut’. That statement couldn’t be more true today, especially considering our culture of fast-paced, busy, stressful lives filled with unhealthy, convenience foods. We are damaging our guts and this is affecting our quality of life.
è Digestive issues
The gut and all the healthy bacteria that line it are critical for your body’s overall health. 80% of your immune system is located in your gut, so if your gut is unhealthy and full of bad bacteria or the lining is leaking then the rest of your body will suffer, mentally and physically. (see box to the right)
è Vertigo
But all hope is not lost. You can heal your gut and get your health back. Lifestyle changes, stress reduction, healthier food choices, bone broth, exercise and supplements are just some of the ways to heal. As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach I work with you on a personalized 1-on-1 basis to determine what’s causing your gut issues and how we can heal them with steps that you are comfortable taking.
è Migraines è Food allergies or intolerances è Numbness/tingling in your fingers & toes è Vitamin deficiencies è Poor immune system è Food cravings è Anxiety If you suffer from one or more of these symptoms then you may have gut health issues that require your attention.
Contact me today to schedule your complimentary health coaching consultation.

PUPPY RAISERS NEEDED!
BECOME A PUPPY RAISER WITH BC GUIDE DOGS & CHANGE SOMEONE’S LIFE. By Steve Darling.
These are just some of the questions and statements I have heard since we became puppy raisers with BC Guide Dogs. I will get into our story in more detail in a minute but first some important numbers. In their history, BC Guide Dogs has graduated 134 dogs. 57 of those dogs are working with people with autism and 48 are PTSD service dogs. This year alone they are expecting a need for 75-80 new puppies and they are trying to keep up with the demand. The demand for service dogs is only increasing. By 2024 BC Guide Dogs expects to have 250 working teams. As you can see the need for puppy raisers is only increasing, but finding people to do it is a challenge. There is a small-time commitment required: one day of class training and then having the puppy go everywhere you can to make sure they are comfortable in all situations. Puppy raisers tend to be people that can handle the time requirements: retired, working from home or a situation where the dog can go to work on a daily basis. This brings us to our situation and why we became part of the program. We had a dog for a very long time. Lucy, our chocolate lab, was our third child and she was a great and loyal dog. We loved her very much, but just month before her 13th birthday, she because sick, very sick. It was clear she was not going to beat this. We made the very tough decision to end her pain. At that time, we needed to some time for us and our children to grieve and process she was no longer with the family. As the months went on, my daughter Hayley and my son Hunter started suggesting they wanted another dog. At that time, I was emceeing the BC Guide Dogs golf tournament, so I brought the whole family and they learned about the program and the service these dogs provide for Autism and PTSD.
16
It was my daughter Hayley that suggested we become puppy raisers. We had a long talk about the program and, of course, we would have to send the dog into the program after 15 months. We all agreed the greater good of the program was what was most important. So many people need service dogs and we could be a part of that. So exactly one year to the day that our Lucy crossed the rainbow bridge we welcomed Red into our home. We are not sure if Red will graduate to move on to the program, but even if he does, he will always have a home with us.
“Why would you agree to ur make the dog part of yo ?” family and then give it up
“Oh, I love what you a doing, but I could ne re it because I love my ver do dogs ” “Oh that is awesome you are doing that! But how could you give the dog up?”

Have you seen
Nancy McCurrach around town? Nancy is always attending local events and meetings, so we asked her to comment on her first year as a City Councillor for Port Coquitlam. It has been an honour and a privilege to have served my first year now as a Port Coquitlam City Councillor. I am grateful to have been appointed by Mayor West to be the City Representative for Arts, Culture & Heritage, a liaison with the Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL) and a member of the Tri-City Homelessness Task Force. I have learned so much in regard to the overall functioning of how the city operates, and I have a much clearer understanding of each branch with which I am involved.
Our city is rich with arts, culture and heritage. And I look forward to continued advocacy on ways we can raise the bar and showcase our diversity – the heart and soul of artistic expression – while capturing historical memories along the way. Our Terry Fox Library is a little jewel inside of the new recreation centre. As a board member representing our city, along with 14 other elected officials, I regularly attend the FVRL Board meetings and learn a great deal. Like how there are so many ways now to process literacy. Coding, for example, is an essential skill for the 21st century. Did you know that the Star Warslike robot that teaches kids coding was so popular the 25 Sphero kits now available for borrowing at the Fraser Valley libraries
had a waiting list of 169 names as soon as they came out? As a city designate at the Tri-City Homelessness Task Force, I participate in regular meetings where we discuss ways we can collaboratively help our most vulnerable people. Recently I volunteered at the Emergency Homeless Shelter. During my time there I chatted with the guests staying with us and it moved me to want to do more. I look forward to the next year ahead and welcome hearing from you

PoCo Dots Activities for Kids By Jennifer Pownall
Saint Patrick’s Day Saint Patrick’s Day is nearly upon us, and on top of the tradition of wearing green, why not try planting shamrocks to honour this Irish feast day. Shamrocks have a deep connection to Ireland, but at this time of year they are also generally available from most local garden centres. Take some time on March 17th to help your kids decorate a small terra cotta pot – a little green paint and perhaps some glue, glitter, stickers, or other decorative items should do the trick – help them fill it with good soil, and sink those emerald plants into the dirt to thrive. All you need then is a little luck!
May Day May 1st is Beltane, also known as May Day, and with it comes a multitude of colourful activities you can try. Celebrating abundance, this holiday is often associated with bells, bright strips of fabric, and the bounty of flowers blooming at this time of year. Try laying out such elements for children – perhaps using a long piece of ivy (real or faux) wound into a base – so they can craft a wreath to wear on their head, or help them create a small version of a May Pole using craft sticks, glue or tape, and a selection of ribbons. You can also give them bits of fabric or ribbon to tie into the branches of trees or even low bushes, and encourage them to make a wish for each lovely knot of colour they add. It makes for a beautiful display, and it MAY be a lot of fun!

Easter Eggs have long been connected to Easter, but rather than dying their shells in shades of pastel this April long weekend, why not try cracking them open instead? Gather the whole family and spend your holiday making memories by taste-testing the different ways to cook an egg! You can hard boil, soft boil, or scramble them. You could make them sunny side up, over easy, or poached. You might even get fancy and add other ingredients to create an omelette or two. The most important part? Have an egg-cellent time!

TOP 4 MORTGAGE CONSIDERATIONS WHEN GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE If you are considering separating from your spouse and you own a home, some considerations will need to be made about how to best move forward financially. 1. CAN ONE SPOUSE AFFORD TO PAY OUT THE OTHER SPOUSE In order to determine approximately how much mortgage, you would qualify for, you would need to multiply your employment income by 4. This amount gives you the approximate amount allowable for a mortgage minus any debt or loans. Ensure you learn what applies to you for your credit and employment with the variety of lenders available. An independent mortgage professional will be able to protect your credit score by using one application to shop multiple lenders. There are lenders that will allow one spouse to refinance the other spouse out up to 95% of the properties value without a sale.
2. WILL THERE BE SPOUSAL OR CHILD SUPPORT? This will impact both parties, the spouse who is paying support will now have to include the amount being paid out in support which will decrease what they would qualify for in a mortgage. The spouse receiving the support will be able to utilize a percentage of the money received in support to assist in getting a mortgage. Other factors would weigh into the mortgage amount allowable such as credit, the kids ages, and current employment. Its important to know that every lender has a different percentage that they will allow in child support to use as income.
3. YOUR LIVING ARRANGEMENTS DURING YOUR SEPARATION JOURNEY CAN CREATE DIFFERENT LAYERS TO NAVIGATE THROUGH WHEN ASSESSING YOUR MORTGAGE. As an example, if both parties have moved out, this will change the occupancy and how the lender views the property, changing the property status from owner occupied to rental. I bring this up as with some divorce’s, a parent may step in as a co signer to help their child keep the home if they can qualify to do so. Unless its owner occupied, many lenders are not favorable to co signers on rental properties. There are different ways this can be navigated.
4. WHO CAN GIVE ME ADVICE ON WHAT? Divorce can be an emotional time. It is life changing and can be difficult to navigate. This is a time where you will need to rely on the expertise of your Mortgage Broker, Financial Advisor, Lawyer and Accountant. Each has their area of expertise so questions about your mortgage and how-to best position yourself and learn your qualifications should be brought to your Mortgage Broker. We will work together with all your advisors to help you through this difficult journey. A lawyer or an accountant will not understand what lenders are willing to do or are not willing to do with a mortgage. Each expert will have to stay in their respective lanes while working together on this life transition, all with the view of doing what’s best for you. Every party can only advise based on the current snapshot of information within there related fields.

Earth Day 2020 Rereading and Recycling Books in the Tri-Cities Here’s a great step towards adopting a ‘green’ lifestyle: buy your books used.
In Metro Vancouver we have a great network of used bookstores, thrift stores, and Little Libraries. Western Sky Books works with these networks in the Tri-Cities and beyond. As the only used bookstore in the immediate area, we help our customers and neighbours gather their reading then pass those books on to their next readers. When a book has meaning for you and your family, it can be hard to send it to recycling. As well, we spend a lot of money on our book collections. Still, books have shelflives, just like any other consumer item. Keeping books in great shape means they can be reread many times.
FIRST UP: RECYCLING IS WORK
A question we can ask ourselves is: ‘If I saw this at a garage sale or a thrift store, would I buy it?’ If the answer is no, then the book, should probably not go in the ‘charity’ or ‘used bookstore’ box. Here’s something most of us don’t know: books are not, as a rule, recyclable. This is because of glue, bindings, and covers. You can remove covers, spiral bindings and staples, and cut the glue from the spine, put all that in the garbage, then put the loose pages in the recycle bin. Remember your 3-Rs? Aside from ‘rereading,’ we can also ‘repurpose’ books. Books in bad condition are fabulous material for all kinds of art and craft projects. Now you’ve sorted your books and you still have a box or two or three which are in reasonable condition for rereading. What’s next?
WHERE TO BUY, TRADE & SHARE YOUR USED BOOKS Used Bookstores: • Western Sky Books (Port Coquitlam/Tri-Cities) • Tomes and Tales Books (Pitt Meadows)

A New View of Mental Health By Jennifer Pownall
So many people have been affected by mental illness, and a push to raise awareness and to overcome the stigma associated with it has increased in recent years. And that is a good thing. A necessity. But have you ever wondered what actions local organizations are taking to directly help the people who are working to improve their mental wellness? With offices located in Port Coquitlam, and a program established in 1973, the New View Society has developed a strategy to help them focus their resources where they are most needed. And ever y part of that plan is born from their vision of “Community Health through Mental Health”. One element includes attracting and retaining caring, experienced staff and board members who are able to apply their knowledge and skills to internal systems. Another is maintaining current properties, which provide access for community members to a range of housing options, while simultaneously searching for future lodging opportunities. A third component
highlights the importance of fundraising though new and established donors and government programs. But, by far, the key directive – indeed, New View ’s core value – is to focus on recover y and healing by placing the individual at the center, as opposed to an illness. Twoway communication is part of the culture, and input from members is regularly sought. Community, family, and peer involvement is supported through a variety of events and other programming. And employment, social, and personal growth opportunities are offered in a safe and welcoming environment. Acceptance is a crucial ingredient in the success of this well-established society, and the respect they show in “understanding and valuing individual right to self-responsibility ” is a sentiment sometimes left out of discussions on mental health. But embracing this type of in-depth, person-focused awareness of mental wellness can only be good for organizations such as New View, and the communities within which they exist. Knowledge is important. And people more so.
Do You Sleep Enough? By Erin Johnstone
If you have trouble sleeping or falling asleep, hypnosis can help. If you’re still not sure, feel free to look at the following signs of not sleeping enough, and from there you can decide. The average adult requires approximately 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Often when life gets busy, the first thing that suffers is our sleep. We go to bed late or get up early, robbing our bodies of those much needed hours to repair and heal itself, to give us the energy required to make it through our day.
10 Signs You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep 1. Feeling tired throughout the day 2. Moodiness or irritability 3. Mind fogginess & hazy memory 4. Feeling depressed or anxious 5. Weight gain 6. Eyes that don’t look good—puffiness, redness
12 Tips to Help You Sleep Better 1.
Create a routine – get your mind and body ready for bed by creating consistency.
2. Turn off bright lights an hour before bedtime – this allows your body to start creating melatonin which signals the body it’s time to sleep. 3.
Sleep in a room with a temperature set between 60-67°; cooler is better.
4. Get some exercise during the day or do light stretches at bedtime. 5.
Remove devices from your bedroom – blue light increases alertness and delays the release of melatonin.
8. Poor food choices
6.
Avoid caffeine after 2pm.
9. Dozing while driving
7.
Meditate or practice self-hypnosis – this gets your body and mind in a relaxed state.
7. Increased acne—sleep regulates the hormones that affect your skin
10. Need for caffeine and coffee Getting enough sleep regulates hormones that affect our bodies’ ability to regulate hunger and emotions. If you are in a long-term state of sleep deprivation, it can affect cognitive function and weaken your immune system. It can take up four days to replace an hour of lost sleep.
8. Use earplugs if there are other noises that can’t be avoided while you sleep. 9.
Have a warm bath or hot shower – lavender or cedarwood essential oils in Epsom salts work wonders.
10. Read something relaxing to unwind.
CONTACT ME
11. Avoid emails or work about an hour or two before bedtime.

12. Avoid alcohol before bed – it may help you fall asleep but it robs you of the deep restful sleep you need.

HOST MASTERS By Jennifer Pownall “One day my boss came up to me and said, ‘You know in meetings you can be...’ ‘What?’ I asked. ‘ ... Boring.’ ” So began one of the first talks – a brief tale of why he began attending Toastmasters, presented by a member named Chris – given at the open house for the Port Coquitlam Lincoln chapter this past January 28th. In a meeting that quickly proved to be a gathering place for welcoming, non-judgmental individuals out to improve their public speaking skills while having a good time, a variety of personal stories and insights – and a lot of laughter – were the main focuses of the evening. There were more informative speeches, and those which encouraged critical thinking on the part of the audience, and tips and evaluations which helped bring variety and a sense of intention to the event. Advice was offered regarding vocal dynamics, purposeful eye contact, utilizing the stage, mastering body and hand gestures, and all the other broken down elements of giving a speech that most of us never consider when watching exceptional orators. But it was the jovial atmosphere and the clear supportive culture of the group that made it stand out, and which created an environment where receiving thoughtful feedback on a speech seemed more like a gift than a critique. With a number of first-time guests in attendance, every one of whom could be seen smiling throughout the night, it felt obvious that the membership will be increasing soon. Newcomer, Jason, was there to “hone his communication skills and connect with a supportive group,” and by his willingness to tackle one of the Toastmasters’ famous table topics during his first meeting, it seems he came to the right place. Similarly, guest speaker Gene Vickers – a previous recipient of both the Governor General’s Queen Jubilee Metal and the Tri-Cities Chamber Citizen of the Year award – clearly enjoyed his time at the front of the room and was able to meet a personal goal regarding his presentation. New members and veterans alike seemed to gain something from standing up and practicing their presentation skills. And not a one of them was boring. Lincoln Toastmasters meets Tuesdays, 7:30-9:00pm (with the exception of the first Tuesday of the month) at 2264 Elgin Avenue, Port Coquitlam. For more information, phone 604-942-7300 or visit facebook.com/LincolnToastmasters. Join them at their “Open House” on April 14,2020. It’s a casual event, where guests can ask questions, meet members and get a feel for the Lincoln Toastmasters culture. Come have some free coffee, tea and pizza during this fun evening of prepared speeches as well as some impromptu speaking. You will learn about what makes Lincoln Toastmasters club the best in Port Coquitlam since 1986.
