SPRING IS NEAR! ...and it’s all about the prep! As our days around here are slowly getting longer, it gives room for more time outside, and in the garden! How well your plants will grow depends largely on the quality and depth of your topsoil. It is vital you take the time to prepare the soil in your garden before you plant! We carry many different kinds of fertilizers to suit your needs. In addition to fertilizer, using compost is a great way to enrich your soil, and keep your plants looking happy and healthy. Starting early springtime is best, in order to get your garden looking great for the upcoming season. Beautify your garden and add some colour! We carry a variety of different annuals and perennials, and even vegetable seeds. Adding a few pops of bright is sure to liven up your yard space. More grass, less moss! If your lawn is full of moss, you likely need to combat it with some hydrated lime. Lime does not kill the moss, but rather raises the pH of the soil, making it a less-than-ideal environment for moss to grow. Another important tip to be ahead this season: have the right tools! Like any other job, having the proper tools is the foundation of great work. At FVBS, there are new promotions and sales on every week to help make your backyard job even easier and more affordable.

Hours of operation: We’re open 7 days a week, and are open early and late on weekdays. Monday to Friday Saturday and Sunday

Spring break is coming up and I am so excited. The trees will start blooming and the birds will chirp again. Even if you are not going somewhere hot and tropical, there are so many awesome, fun things to do in Mission during spring break. For instance, hiking, skiing/snowboarding, swimming, painting Easter eggs, baking or having a picnic with your family and friends at the park. One of my favorite things about spring is when the new leaves start blooming. It is a marvelous feeling after the gloomy January and February. There is a beautiful maple tree in my front yard and every year it is unbelievable to look at when it blooms a bright pink. It is much more gorgeous then a bare winter tree. Winter in mission can feel very long sometimes but spring will be here soon followed by the anticipation of summer! Share any stories or written work to whatsonmission@live.ca

Mission Hospice Society BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Individual/Family One on One Our trained Bereavement Coordinator provides short term individual and family support to anyone who needs the support. Services are designed to meet the individual’s specific needs and we help people of all ages. We also make referrals to specialized professionals, if further support is needed. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS Memorial Services We host a memorial services once a year to remember your loved ones. Please contact Nathalie Millar for more information and dates. Pathways, Adults Support Group It’s not easy to understand or accept the death of someone we love. A grief support group is a group of people who come together to help each other through their grief journey. Some of the benefits of attending can include connecting with others who have gone through similar situations, associating with people who will listen without judgement, new ideas to help you cope and heal, time to share memories of the person who passed, and understanding what responses are natural and normal during grieving Women's Support Group The Mission Hospice Society hosts an ongoing weekly widow’s support group called Tea and Company, which is a weekly support group for women who have lost a spouse. This program runs Thursday at 10am in the resource room of the Mission Hospice Society. Circle of Friends, Children’s Grief Support Group This group is aimed at helping children deal with their grief and how to channel their grief in a positive way through crafts and sharing they learn to accept their loss and how to move on. The winter session begins January 24 and runs on Thursday from 3:30pm to 5:15pm in the Mission Hospice Society resource room Camp Zajac In July of every year we send Bereaved children to enjoy a few days of camp at Camp Zajac. Horseback riding, archery, kayaking are some of the great activities these children get to enjoy. All children, including those who have successfully gone through our Circle of Friends program are invited to attend the camp free of charge.

22

Walking Group Our walking group provides an opportunity to walk and talk, while meeting new people who share a common experience that can provide mutual support and acceptance. This program combines informal support with fresh air and exercise. Compassionate Friends This is a support group for bereaved parents offered by The Compassionate Friends Organization. They meet at the hospice office every second Monday of the Month. Richard Lepinsky is the trained facilitator for this Chapter. The mission of The Compassionate Friends: When a child dies, at any age, the family suffers intense pain and may feel hopeless and isolated. The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. After Life Conversations This group has been meeting for over two years at the Mission Public Library on the first Monday of every month. This is an open group where people come together and talk about Near Death Experiences and the possibility of communications with their loved one after their passing. This is a very open minded group and does not follow any particular religion or spirituality but welcomes all beliefs. It is a safe place where people whom have lost a loved one can share their experiences without judgements or advice. Youth Children Support Groups - In School This group is for children between the ages of 12-14 who attend Middle School and have experienced some kind of loss, such as a person, pet, change in community or school, separation or divorce, or health. This support group is once a week for 8 weeks from 2-3pm. After the formal 8-week sessions, this group will convert to drop-in, and we will be available to further the discussion and offer support as the children require. We will have a therapy dog attend on one or more sessions and have activities, arts, and discussions relevant to this age group. This group will also enjoy a field trip and invitations to our other day camps. Mission Hospice Society 32180 Hillcrest Ave. Telephone: 604-826-2235 E-mail: info@missionhospice.bc.ca

What's On! in the Community

SARA’S STORY Submitted by Taneane Twele

My first memory of the Mission Youth House (MY House) is walking in with the most negative attitude,” said Sara, one of the hundreds of youth that have been helped by MY House. “I was afraid that I was going to be judged for being desperate and homeless.” What happened next changed Sara’s life. “Sam (MY House staff) introduced herself, hooked me up with a tent and a backpack with blankets, clothes, snacks and even notebooks, word puzzles, and pens. It was literally the best thing that could have happened to me at that time in my life.” MY House is a safe place for youth ages 14-24 in Mission who are dealing with homelessness and other challenges. Youth are provided with basic resources in an unconditionally loving way.

Clarke Theatre Ushers

Sara says, “I would encourage others to take advantage of everything MY House has to offer.” My House provides a comfortable daytime refuge where vulnerable youth can access resources such as warm meals, laundry, and shower facilities, clean clothes and blankets and so much more. There is also access to medical, counseling and harm reduction resources and job opportunities. “When I became pregnant they helped me find a place to live, took me to my doctor’s appointment and made sure I had the resources I needed to provide for myself and my child” exclaimed Sara. “Because of MY House staff and volunteers, I am now in a place in my life that I can give back.” Sara will soon be a member of the volunteer staff at MY House and an inspiration to other youth in the community.

NOT SURE WHAT TINT IS BEST FOR YOU? Following is a handy tint guide for choosing sunglasses... GRAY: Gray is a popular neutral tint that allows the eyes to perceive colors in their purest form. Gray tints reduce brightness and glare. Choose gray for driving and outdoor sports such as golf, running or cycling.

AMBER/BROWN: Amber and brown tints reduce glare and block blue light, giving them the ability to brighten vision on cloudy days. By blocking blue light, these tints increase contrast and visual acuity, especially against green and blue backgrounds such as grass and sky. Choose amber and brown tints for fishing, baseball, golf, hunting, cycling, and water sports.

MELANIN:

YELLOW/ORANGE: Yellow and orange tints increase contrast in hazy, foggy or low-light conditions. These tints tend to make objects appear sharper both indoors and outdoors but can also cause color distortion. Choose yellow shades for snow activities and indoor ball sports.

GREEN: Green tints filter some blue light and reduce glare, while offering high contrast and visual sharpness. Shades of green also tend to reduce eyestrain in bright light. Choose green for precision sports such as tennis, baseball and golf.

Melanin pigment in sunglass tints are said to protect the eyes from aging changes related to sun exposure. There is also some evidence that melanin has protective effects for people with macular degeneration.

ROSE/RED: Rosy tints increase contrast by blocking blue light. These tints have a reputation of being soothing to the eyes and more comfortable than others for longer wear-times. They also help with visibility while driving and seem to be a favorite among computer users as they reduce glare and eyestrain.
