TIME FOR THE COLD The holiday season is fast approaching, and it’s Alright, so you’re all prepared, it’s time to start only getting colder. Take care of some last minute thinking about the holidays! Love it or hate it, winterization before it’s too late! there’s no escaping the hustle-bustle of the holidays. Be prepared! Freezing water can break apart concrete and metal pipes, gutters, and downspouts. Look the part with our huge stock of decorations! The freeze / thaw cycle is also damaging - and is Lights, ornaments, trees and all the accessories worse in some areas rather than in others. Your are a hot commodity this time of year, so start home and its possessions can be protected by early and get festive. following a few guidelines. This checklist can be your starting point for the annual winterization process. • Prepare exterior water faucets and spigots for the upcoming cold months. Now is the time to consider those freeze-proof faucets! • The icy weather can cause severe personal and vehicular accidents, so stock up on ice melt, snow shovels, and consider a snowblower. • Drafty doors and windows are typically the biggest culprits with regard to a home’s heating system overrunning; and weatherstripping and caulking are the place to start. • Maintaining the roof is an important safeguard against hidden water damage; replace shingles as they become damaged. Keep in mind that shingles have manufacturer’s recommended replacement schedules.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE
HAPPY HOLIDAYS! With the holiday season fast approaching, I look forward to spending some quiet time with family and friends and reflecting on the past year. It has been an exciting year for me as the owner of What’s On! Mission. I love that I get to work and promote the businesses and organizations in the community I live in. I'm proud of the creative talents, entrepreneurs and volunteers #LOVEMISSIONBC that make Mission so vibrant. I’m also thankful to the many businesses and organizations that have supported What’s On! and I am excited about the new projects and growth next year will bring to our business community.
In this issue, you will see the many new and old businesses in Mission, as well as the growing number of Christmas Craft Fairs & Markets around town. It will be so much fun shopping local and getting all your Christmas gifts right here in Mission. Beyond the gifts though, check out all the Remembrance Day and Christmas Events in this issue. There are also many opportunities to get involved or give back to our community. Go out and explore with your kids; share some laughs with your friends; and make memories with your loved ones.

FLOAT & VEHICLE REGISTRATION CLOSES NOV 30TH! Welcome to the annual family tradition by the Chamber of Commerce, where approx. 70 floats light up Mission’s Downtown with lights, music and of course Santa. First Avenue in Mission will be closed, cleaned and decorated, in anticipation of the arrival of Santa Claus for the largest nighttime Christmas parade in B.C. The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is the host organization for this annual event, now in its 34th year. The parade officially begins at 7:30 pm when the first float will make its way west down First Avenue, but come by earlier to get a good view! Up to 80 floats are expected this year to celebrate the merriest of seasons and to bring the community together in Christmas Spirit. This event would not happen if not for the generosity and support of the local businesses and community organizations. Yet, another reminder how important it is to shop local and support community groups. Happy holidays!

Is This the Season to Sell? Have you ever noticed that some things have a season? For example, hockey is associated with winter, regardless of where it’s played. New TV shows usually start in the fall. It makes you wonder. Does real estate have a season? Is there an ideal time of year to sell? Seasons can play a role in the real estate market. So the best time to sell is when you want to sell. There is no PDJLF PRQWK WKDW LV JRLQJ WR PDNH D VLJQLÀFDQW GLIIHUHQFH LQ WKH price you’re going to get, or how long your home will be on the market. I can help sell your home regardless of the season. Of course, you might not be thinking of selling now, But, if you are, don’t worry about the time of year, lets talk today 604-615-6446!

NEW CHOCOLATE MANUFACTURER IN MISSION HAS SWEET BUSINESS MODEL
who we are The owner of a new chocolate manufacturer called Emkao Foods has chosen the District of Mission as its headquarters to produce high quality, affordable organic cocoa products for Canadian customers. “We chose Mission because it is in the heart of the Fraser Valley, it’s a growing community and is very supportive to local business startups”, says CEO Ayissi Nyemba. Ayissi is both a woman entrepreneur and a recent immigrant to Canada who is passionate about producing and processing organic and fair trade products that are both kind to the planet and cocoa beans growers.
“We want to be the most sustainable and ethical chocolate manufacturer in Canada”
what makes us unique Emkao is unique in that it sources all its cocoa beans from its own family farm in Cameroon. This allows us to have full control over product quality and to provide long term grown contracts to its farmers so they have a secure source of income. “We want to be the most sustainable and ethical chocolate manufacturer in Canada”, states Ayissi. Fortunately, demand for fair trade organic cocoa is growing strongly as consumers become more aware of and concerned about where their food comes from. Emkao is planning to launch in March of 2019.

Trendy or What Knot Yarns & Gifts offers the best selection of yarns west of the Rockies. Established in 2014, this specialty shop on 1st Ave downtown Mission has evolved into a destination for “yarn explorers” from across BC. Owner Mady Pechler’s love of knitting and her penchant for business are two reasons for the store’s success. In 2016 Pechler was named recipient of the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award--Power of Small. In addition to bringing in myriad types of yarn from all over the world, Pechler offers accessories, needles and notions, classes and workshops. Trendy or What Knot Yarns & Gifts also serves as a meeting place where people can just come in with their projects, sit at the table to work, and ask questions if they need help. Thursday evenings are dedicated to “Trendy’s Sit & Stitch Club”, a weekly gathering for crafters from all artistic disciplines. Everyone is welcome!

Mission Youth in Sports & Arts Can Dance Dances their way to Europe Mission’s Can Dance Studio owner Debbie Calicetto just returned home from the UK after choreographing the Opera “Gondoliers”. Traveling alongside Can Dance instructors Marcel Tremel, Sierra Milne, Kianna Rigg, Sam Boyd, and Jordyn O’Connor as they danced their way to Europe. The group attended the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival this August in Harrogate, England. Working with Fraser Valley Stage they performed as an intricate part in the Opera. The Gondoliers got rave reviews and received 8 nominations in the festival including Best Traditional Opera. It was an experience of a lifetime for the dancers and the standing ovation was the biggest accolade they could have asked for. They wish to thank the people of Mission for all the love and support along their journey and will continue to perform for their audiences around the world and here at home.

The Long Term Athlete Development model is based on science, research and decades of experience. This model confirms that kids will get active, stay active and even reach the greatest heights of sport achievement if they do the right thing at the right time. Please consider the points below to guide your child’s sport involvement. Girls up to 8 and boys up to 9 years old should develop fundamental movement skills . Agility , Balance, Coordination and Speed are skills that should be developed in a fun and challenging multisport environment .
Girls 9-11 and boys 10 –12 years old should be converting their fundamental movement skills into fundamental sport skills. Known as the "Golden Age of Learning” it may be tempting to specialize at this age through excessive single sport training, or early position specialization in team sports. This should be avoided at these ages. Girls 12-15 and boys 13-16 are ready to consolidate their basic sport specific skills and focus on fitness development to develop an athletes long term potential. RICH VIGURS
A SHOT IN THE DARK
What's On! in the Community Ellen: What led you to photography? Rich: My parents are to blame. My dad was a Pentax fan-boy back in the film days. About the same time digital photography was breaking onto the scene my oldest son was born (2004). I bought a real camera at that time with the idea of documenting his life (and then 3 years later his younger brother). E: What inspires you? R: My love of the outdoors and the sense of adventure and wonder I get from being there. And my family of course. E: What job or experiences have brought you to where you are now? R: My parents instilled a great love of the outdoors. I graduated from the Outdoor Recreation Management Program at Capilano University in the early 1990s which lead to a 5-year stint as a back country mt guide. After that I worked with youth through Parks and Recreation departments where I specialized in Outdoor program. Photography is the one activity that allows me to be involved in all my favourite activities (climbing, mt biking, travelling, hiking and trail running) and make a living. E: Did you face any challenges along the way?

I had a chance to meet up with Rich Vigurs, a nominee, at the most recent Celebration of the Arts Aw A ards Night in Mission. Rich's photographs and life f experiences are inspiring. His photographs will be on display at the Mission Arts Centre fr f om November 13 – December 1. You can meet him f rst hand at the opening reception of his exhibit “Shot in the Dark” on fi Saturday, November 17. You can see more of his artwork at www.ShutterNutter.pro or contact him at 604-516-8272 or rvigurs@gmail.com fo f r more info f rmation. R: 4 years ago, my life went through a huge transition that involved a death of a family member, the end of my 18-year marriage, the death of my dog and my company being taken by investors. It was the hardest 6 months of my life and resulted in bouts of severe depression and episodes of anxiety. I found solace in taking photos. I was forcing myself to get outside and exercise which was a solid step in creating a semblance of order which had slipped away from me. The camera had me rethinking how I saw the world. No longer was I racing to get from point A to B but I had to slow everything down. I had a very nice camera at the time but was more or less using it as a point and shoot. I decided enough was enough and taught myself what all the buttons meant and how their functions were used to construct a photo. I learned basic photography theory and how to do post production. To my surprise, I found it intuitive and therapeutic. Ever since, I have strived to create a signature feel to my photos. I want people to look at my photo and say, "that is a Rich Vigurs image". You don't have to like it, but I want it to be distinctive and knowable at a glance.
I have so much to learn which is part of the excitement for me. E: Do you have any advice for others? R: I am 51. I have built 3 companies and sold 2 of them. I had a secure job with a municipality which I quit because it was crushing my soul. My advice do something you love and do it better than anyone else. It is never too late and age doesn't matter. Life is so unpredictable. Time is your most precious commodity, don't throw it away waiting for the years to pass so you can collect a pension. E: What do you see in your future? R: Plans are created to be broken. My goal is to "own" the niche I now work in and spend the rest of my life exploring the world and photographing the moments that intrigue me. E: Anything else you want to add in conclusion? R: I would like to thank anyone that has taken the time to read this - you are awesome. I hope you feel something when you see my images - if you have, then done my job.
