It’s quite a familiar scene in most families: the kids dressing up and fantasizing that they are whatever character is currently popular in movies and cartoons. Freelance photographer Reid Lucier’s daughter is no different. She loves getting dressed up as her favourite character! But that’s where things get different in the Lucier household. Reid takes photos of his daughter in character and then, using his extensive background in digital art and the movie industry, he designs a stunning background to match the character. Of course, his daughter gets rather excited with the results! This activity all started a few years ago when Reid’s daughter was still a baby. He decided one day to take one of her photos and create a space background. The image he created amazed his wife and friends. Since then, he’s done it several times as his daughter has grown because, as all parents know, favourite characters change rather quickly! He’s also had the opportunity to do similar creations for the kids at BC Children’s Hospital. Reid has now established Komic Kidz in order to create these amazing images for other families. Whether it’s Spiderman, Elsa, Ironman or whatever Princess is the current rage, Reid will design a truly stunning image and provide you with a quality portrait that will excite your child and leave you with a lasting memory.
You can see Reid’s work by visiting his Facebook page (@komickidsvancouver). Or call him (778-996-7243) to arrange your child’s photoshoot and image creation. Gary Wilson is Co-owner and Publisher of What’s On! Burnaby. We welcome your comments via email (info@WhatsOnBurnaby.ca).

ONE ON with ONE Janice Liu
Comics
Learn about the process of writing and drawing comics!
Apr 18 - Jun 20, 2020
Saturdays 10 - 11am (8-12 yrs) OR
by Eiji Yoshikawa
Saturdays 1 - 2:15pm (11-15 yrs)
Professional boxing trainer and writer, Eiji Yoshikawa goes “one on one” with people in Burnaby who are “on a mission”! In this column, Eiji talks with Janice Liu, Artist and Owner of Young Artists’ Place in South Burnaby. The studio offers classes for kids 6-17, as well as private art lessons for adults. The studio’s specialty classes include comic art, manga, drawing fundamentals and even digital art! EARLY ART ADVENTURES Eiji: What was your first encounter with art? Janice: Power Puff Girls! It’s an American cartoon about three girls who beat up monsters. I loved it and even started a Power Puff Girls Club in my school. Eiji: Was there a pivotal point in your early art experience? Janice: On my 11th or 12th birthday, my parents gave me the drawing tablet “Intuos 3” by Wacom. It changed my life from carrying a sketchbook all the time to carrying the super tablet! Eiji: Best memory? Janice: When I was 7, my father, though very busy with his work, spent hours with me making a movie about Power Puff Girls. THE ART JOURNEY Eiji: How did you train to become an artist? Janice: I spent a year at Maryland Institute College of Art in USA before taking Cognitive Science and East Asian Study courses at the University of Toronto. I also taught for two years at the Children’s Art Studio in Toronto. Eiji: Why did you decide to start this studio? Janice: When I was young I was always drawing fantasy characters inspired by cartoons and pop culture, like Neopets (which was very popular when I was a kid). I wanted to create a space where students can learn art skills while expressing their authentic s e l v e s , without feeling confined to creating “fine art”. KIDS AND THE VALUE OF ART Eiji: Why is art good for children? Janice: You can express things you can’t express in words. Art is also a great tool to explore the “grey areas” of life. Eiji: What would you say about schools dropping art classes? Janice: Art can be a great way to get back in touch with our senses and our emotions. It also helps kids to develop independent decision-making and problem-solving skills. That aside, I think there is immense pressure on youth these days to excel academically and do everything. We shouldn’t deprive kids of music, art and sport – they help make us more whole and healthy people. Eiji Yoshikawa is a writer, former pro boxer, movie enthusiast, professional boxing trainer, magazine publisher and humanitarian. We welcome your comments via email (info@WhatsOnBurnaby.ca).

Meet Claudia Dagnin
COMING FROM CHILE TO HELP HURTING PEOPLE HEAL WE ARE CANADA … Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.” In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours … in hopes of becoming friends.
For those of us born and raised in Canada, we can never fully appreciate the trying circumstances that many of our immigrant neighbours have had to endure in their home countries and in their struggle to settle in Canada. Our grandparents and parents may have endured some of these struggles like war, dictatorships and poverty, but we have never had to experience such hardships here. Nor have we been forced to go through the many trials of adjusting to life in a very different culture. While Claudia Dagnino’s childhood in Chile was not too dissimilar from many here in Canada, her entrance into the world definitely was! The night when she was born in Concepcion, Chile, was the very same day that a coup d’etat overthrew the government! As her mother went into labour, she had to be transported to the hospital in a military car as bullets were flying all around and the country was in civil unrest. Fortunately, Claudia’s mom made it to the hospital and Claudia arrived safe and sound! Through her years growing up, she didn’t have any idea of what she wanted to do with her life, but she remembers being very helpful and supportive to people. She also was an excellent friend to confide in, as she was great at keeping secrets. These natural abilities eventually led to post-secondary studies in psychology. Claudia spent seven years training to be a psychologist and worked with people suffering with such conditions as schizophrenia, Down syndrome and workplace trauma. Her clinical practicum provided her with amazing experiences helping people overcome completely debilitating conditions. She also had opportunity to work for several years with the deaf community.
After embarking on her career as a full-fledged psychologist, Claudia’s quest for learning led to an interest in forensic science and she ended up coming to Canada and here to Burnaby to study at BCIT. Having completed that program, she sought to begin practicing as a psychologist but learned the common experience of so many immigrants, that her education in Chile was insufficient to practice here in Canada. Claudia learned she would have to complete a Master’s program here, and while she debated whether she wanted to go through that educational process all over again, her desire to help people and do what she loved, motivated her to enrol in an MA program. Of course, her frustrations were realized when she discovered that almost every course she took was a repeat of the courses she had taken in Chile! Nevertheless, she was able to excel in her studies and completed not only the MA, but since then, her training as a Registered Clinical Counsellor and Rapid Resolution Therapist, among others. While many of Claudia’s struggles as an immigrant are quite common among newcomers to Canada, that has not hindered her passion to help people and serve our community. Claudia has had numerous opportunities to assist battered women, individuals dealing with addictions, as well as many immigrants. Claudia has also provided therapy support for police, hospital, other first responders and various court personnel. Her work with people experiencing PTSD, panic attacks and anxiety has had amazing results and brought relief to many. She has found it gratifying to see so many people helped, even after working with them for just one session! After working for various agencies in the Vancouver area, Claudia has recently set up her own practice in South Burnaby to counsel and support people. She’s like so many other immigrants … helping, contributing to her community, and offering her abilities to make other people’s lives better. Just like so many of our immigrant parents and grandparents!

However, being life-long pet owners, the couple found it increasingly difficult to leave their pets for extended periods of time. It was actually Petunia, their pot-bellied pig, that spurred them to action. They simply had to find a good way to look after her and their other pets, so after finding a terrific facility, The Re-Treat Doggy Daycare was born!

It’s that last element that makes The ReTreat such a special place. Erin and Dean look at dogs for their individual personality, not their brood traits. They understand dogs to be much like people, who have both good days and bad, and who react to things differently. They’ve trained their staff to watch the dogs closely throughout the day in order to understand how each dog is feeling and engaging with the other dogs.

Their location boasts over 4,000 square feet of space for the dogs to roam and play. About half of that is a fully fenced yard with some fun play features. Inside the building are several rooms where the dogs can relax for a snooze, or where they can be divided according to their temperament.

Learning to socialize with other dogs is a valuable benefit for placing your dog in a daycare, and it’s one reason why Erin and Dean are soon to open a Puppy Area within their facility. This will give the younger dogs time to adjust to the different environment while being around dogs closer to their own size. Of course, what kind of “Re-Treat” would this doggy daycare be if they didn’t have their own home-baked treats to give out? Erin and Dean have developed these tasty snacks (we tried one!) that are all natural and free of additives, since some of the dogs deal with allergies. It’s just another reason why The Re-Treat Doggy Daycare could be called “Your Dog’s New Happy Place”!

LIVE WELL specializes in supervised exercise and healthy lifestyle coaching and is ideal for people who have or are seeking to prevent chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
HEALTHY HABITS FOR LIVING WELL with Ryley
The Diet for YOU Healthy eating is essential for living well. With the plethora of “expert” opinions and diets aimed to revolutionize our health, it is challenging to know what you should be eating. As individuals with distinct goals, lifestyles, preferences and cultures, this is especially intimidating. In celebration of the Dietitians of Canada Nutrition Month in March, I want to provide you with tools to help you become YOUR OWN Dietary Expert. The best “diet” FOR YOU is the one that works FOR YOU. Steps to personalizing an eating plan FOR YOU: KEEP A FOOD LOG FOR 1 WEEK On paper or in an app. A food log gives you a clear picture of your eating patterns. Decide which behaviour will get you to your nutritional goals. Then, put this behaviour INTO ACTION in your meal plan. MEAL PLAN Write a plan for the week. Writing it down eliminates relying on willpower. As you develop your meal plan, make a grocery list. GROCERY SHOP Creating a grocery list ensures you have the foods required for your meal plan and helps you avoid getting unnecessary, tempting foods. PREP IF POSSIBLE Advance preparation can drastically improve success and reduce cooking times. Although this seems daunting at first it is actually very LIBERATING. No more asking yourself “What should I eat?” The decision has already been made and planned in line with your nutritional goals. Continue to repeat this process as new habits are made and as your goals evolve! Ryley Carr (BSc KIN, ACSM-CEP), is a Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist. You can find Ryley changing lives at LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic.
