s e t a r b e l e Earth Day C cycling! e R f o s r a e Y 40 On Saturday, April 21st, join Ridge Meadows Recycling Society at the biggest Earth Day Celebration Maple Ridge has ever seen! From 10am – 2pm, the ACT and Memorial Peace Park will be filled with roving entertainers, flash mobs, electric vehicles, bikes, crafts, booths, and animals as we celebrate all things green!
Come join us to celebrate Earth Day and Ridge Meadows Recycling’s 40th Anniversary with local and green businesses, arts groups, and organizations. And yes, there will be cake! Want to volunteer for Earth Day, have a booth at the event, or would like information, please contact Leanne Koehn at leanne@rmrecycling.org or phone 604.463.5545.
Kids’ activities at this family friendly event include the Earth Day Freecycle (reduce, reuse, and recycle your children’s gently used books, toys, & clothes), Urban Nature Hikes, crafts, and the first “Green Baby Disco”! The first Haney Farmer’s Market of the year will ensure there will be lots of good food & munchies on site and the Zero Waste Station will ensure that if it can be recycled, it will be recycled! The organizing committee includes members of the CEED Centre (lead organizers for the past 7 years), Alouette River Management Society, Adopt-A-Block, Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association, Ridge Meadows Recycling, and, of course, the Haney Farmer’s Market!

To adopt a homeless cat or bunny, Please call 604-463-7917 Lolara is a sweet girl who is not happy to find herself at a shelter once again. Poor Lolara doesn’t understand that it is not her fault and we are hoping that someone will find it in their heart to give her another chance. She’s a very nice, quiet, and pretty little girl who is looking for a home that will spoil her rotten. She’s okay with other cats but would be best in a home with no small children as they may overwhelm her. If you’re looking for a sweet and gentle cat come meet Lolara. Bam Bam is one of those boys who everyone falls in love with. This funny boy is so full of personality you can’t help but giggle as he waddles his chubby little body out from where ever he is sleeping and entertains you with his antics. Bam Bam is great with people of all ages, and though he tolerates other cats, Bam Bam would prefer a home where he is the only feline. He’s all the cat you need! Bam Bam is cuddly, happy, playful and just as happy sitting back to watch a movie, or running around chasing a toy. Give this guy a chance and you won’t be disappointed!

Yes, we are STILL outside!
It’s January, the children are dressed for the weather. In snow pants and toques (some made by the children themselves from knitting skills learned in the fall) the children are out in the snow. It is below zero, but the children didn’t mind as I observed them following tracks, working on projects, making hot apple cider and making lots of discoveries about motion, traction, and velocity by sledding down the hill.
Children are busy and engaged wherever I look and the most noticeable observation is that in spite of the below zero weather the children are enthusiastic, happy and demonstrating their learning. Rebecca Kozol PHOTO: Craig Cerhit
“Where is the ‘home school’?” That is the question I have been asked more than any other when I tell people that my grand daughter is in kindergarten in the Environmental School Project. When I answer “Wherever they are learning”, the next question is “What is going to happen when it is snowing and freezing?”. During January we have been able to answer that question. “They will continue learning in whatever conditions by using the resources we have been provided with - snow, the forest, the leisure centre, and the Public Library to name a few.”
Inside the yurt while drinking the hot apple cider they had made, some of the children were treated to learning about the Metis culture by a parent with Metis ancestry.

Welcome to What's On in Real Estate! Say goodbye to the RRSP deadline & hello to the the real estate spring market! Every year we review our financial portfolio but do we review our real estate portfolio? An annual review is important to determine "What's On" in the real estate market, mortgage rates, and your community. A realtor can help you with such a review. Renting? A review of the real estate market could prove that in some cases owning a home is cheaper than renting.

After the success of last year’s appraisal, we will be having antique appraiser Al Bowen back to look at your treasures. Admission for the Tea and Appraisal is $15, which allows you to bring in 2 items, and tickets can be purchased at the door on the day of the event. There is limited space for the appraisal, so tickets will be given on a first come first serve basis for this part of the event. Please contact Allison at 604-463-5311 or mrmcurator@uniserve.com for more details.

Have Kids Who Love Animals? Kids looking forward to BC SPCA summer camp can now get a taste of summer all through the year. Monthly BC SPCA youth workshops are held at various branches throughout the province, including the newly built Maple Ridge branch. These programs are scheduled on Pro-D days and over spring break, running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Kids are immersed in animal-themed activities. In fun and engaging ways they are challenged to learn about responsible animal care, animal facts and to develop positive, respectful relationships between people, animals and nature. Kids leave feeling inspired to be ambassadors for animals in their community. Over spring break kids will learn all about small animals with crafts, games, behind-the-scenes tours and guest speakers. April workshops will focus on wildlife. Upcoming themes include cats, dogs, farm animals and careers with animals. Kids get to have fun, learn and make new friends (both furry and human)!
Upcoming workshops: March 14-15: “Big Hearts for Small Animals” April 26: “Wild Things” For more details and to register, please visit spca.bc.ca/kidsevents. All youth workshops and summer camps may qualify as child care expenses for tax purposes if held during parents’ work or school hours.
