PUBLISHER’S NOTE STARTING OFF THE NEW YEAR ONCE AGAIN
As winter frost lines the glass window, I feel the urge to write. With the holiday season coming to a close, the new year fast approaches. During this festive time, it’s important that we take a moment to reflect on ourselves, our year, our accomplishments, as well as our resolutions for 2018.
sure every voice is heard and that everybody has a chance to share their story. So, this new year, be sure to take a moment to ask yourself: what will your story be? We would love to share your story! Lend us your voice at: Email: whatsonwrss@gmail.com
When a community raises its voice in celebration, the sound becomes a symphony. Likewise, just as each instrument plays its part, we each play an integral role in our communities. The music of our song lifts us up, inspires us, and fuels us to do the things we love. With each step of the journey, the energy of our community pushes us forward to explore, wish, believe, and marvel at the beauty around us. Whether sentimental or no, it’s easy to feel the love!

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Interview with Gordon & LaVerne Hogg by April Lewis
“I’m in this to be the strongest voice for our community.”
mum encouraged him to step up to the plate (pun intended) and volunteer.
And the this refers to the December Federal byelection for the recently vacated South SurreyWhite Rock Seat.
His father, who practiced as a prominent physician in the White Rock area, was also a tremendous influence on him as far as contributing to the community. And Gordie has never looked back.
Not exactly a typical challenge for the average septuagenarian but at age 71, nothing can deter the indefatigable Gordon Hogg. Having recently completed his PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Policy at SFU, Gordie, as he is affectionately known, has turned down four academic job offers in order to run for the Liberal Trudeau team. Everyone knows the affable, somewhat verbose, colorfully-attired Gordie as an accomplished community leader with a proven record of public service.
He started his professional career as a youth probation officer and was the Director of Willingdon Youth Detention Centre in Burnaby. He served 20 years on White Rock City Council with ten of them as Mayor. He was our local Liberal MLA for another 20 years. He started the ACT NOW BC health promotion program and led by example. He ‘walked the talk’ as he exercised and lost weight.
No one knows this better than his childhood sweetheart and wife of 47 years, LaVerne, who admits to being a “Star Wars junkie”. She is known to be her own woman as one of her many fridge magnets will attest to: “I’m not bossy – I just have better ideas!” She volunteers in the community with the hospital auxiliary, the Sea Festival, White Rock Youth Ambassador programs and finds time to curl and attend yoga twice a week.
As the Minister for Families and Children, he is proud of his work in the delegation of authority and rights to Aboriginal leaders as well as those with intellectual disabilities.
Gordie is also passionate about community service, the seed of which was planted in his mother’s kitchen over a glass of milk and a peanut butter sandwich. His eyes well up with tears as he reminisces. As a teenager, Gordie complained about the lack of Little League coaches and his
When asked if he is a workaholic, Gordie smiles and replies with a quote from Ghandi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Whats On! • www.whatsonwhiterock.ca
As he enters the Federal political race, he has three main issues he is wanting to tackle; namely, housing, senior caregiver support and inequalities facing returning war veterans.
Don’t ever change Gordie…we love you just the way you are!

TOP TEN TAX DEDUCTIONS FOR HOMEOWNERS 1. Mortgage Interest – Mortgage interest on a home is usually fully tax-deductible. You can deduct interest on multiple mortgages, as long as they do not exceed $1 million. The purpose of the mortgage must specifically be to buy, build or improve a home. 2. Points Paid on a Purchased/Refinanced Loan – If you refinanced last year, you may be able to write-off any points you paid to buy down the mortgage rate. To do this, you deduct the points proportionately over the life of the new loan. For example, if you took out a 30-year loan, you would deduct 1/30th of the points you paid each year. Remember, if you’ve refinanced before, and you have points from the previous refinance that you haven’t finished deducting, you can write off the rest of those points in the year you refinance. If you bought your home last year, the points you paid at closing are deductible on your income tax statement for that year. If the seller paid some (or all) of your points for you, you may be able to deduct those seller-paid points too! 3. PMI – extended through 2010! Late in ’07, Congress extended the tax deduction for homeowners paying private mortgage insurance through 2010. This one has some restrictions – you must have bought or refinanced the home after January 1, 2007 and have an adjusted gross income under $110,000. 4. Capital Gains with No Income Taxes – Thanks to the 1997 Tax Act, once every two years, single homeowners can realize a tax-exempt profit of up to $250,000 – as long as the seller owned and occupied the home as a principal residence during any two of the last five years. Married homeowners who file jointly on their tax returns do not have to pay taxes on up to $500,000 of gains when they sell their primary residence. 5. Home Improvements – they can help when you’re ready to sell! Although you can’t deduct the expenses associated with home improvements, keep in mind that making improvements to your home may increase the selling price of your home. Keeping all of your receipts from home improvements may help you prove your

home’s worth at resale and reduce the potential taxable gain when selling your home. 6. Real Estate and Property Taxes – State and local property taxes can be deducted as an expense against income. However, the real estate taxes are only deductible in the year they are actually paid to the government. 7. Home Offices – Work from home? If you have a qualified office in your home, you may be able to deduct costs associated with maintaining the portion of your home exclusively used for business. For example, 100% of your expenses related to the office such as painting, and upkeep are deductible, as well as a portion of indirect expenses such as the cost of utilities and garbage pickup. 8. Limited Moving Expenses – Homeowners who have recently relocated for work may be able to write off the cost of moving themselves, their household goods, their vehicles, and other reasonable costs associated with the move. There are some restrictions: for instance, the new job must be 50 or more miles farther from the old home than the old job was. 9. Health-Related Improvements – Any home improvements for medical purposes can be deducted entirely from your taxes as long as the improvements do not add to the overall value of the home and have been made for a chronically ill or disabled person. If you qualify, you may be able to deduct a portion of expenses such as a swimming pool for treating polio victims or an air conditioner to alleviate a specific medical condition. 10. Vacation Homes – Owning a vacation home has more benefits than you may think. You can deduct some of the costs associated with owning a vacation home, such as real estate taxes, personal property taxes, mortgage interest, and points. As always, you should check with your tax advisor to determine which of these deductions apply to you. Don’t say we didn’t tell you!

ARE MY BENEFITS TAXABLE? The festive year end where we think about giving to each other is behind us - and now we start thinking about having to ‘give’ to the government: taxes! And this brings up a question: ‘Are my benefits taxable?’ The answer depends on which benefits we are talking about: Government, Group or personally owned plans. 1. Government: main ‘living’ benefits are CPP, WCB, EI & ICBC a. CPP: taxable monthly benefit paid only if you are severely ill or injured (ie. not expected to live long). b. WCB: tax free monthly benefit paid for accidents only – on the job only. c. EI: ‘Employment Insurance’ – Taxable monthly benefit paid to employees if injured or ill and unable to work. Start after 7 days and pays up to the 120th day of disability. d. ICBC: Government auto insurance – Tax free monthly benefit paid only if injured in a motor vehicle accident. Starts after 7 days and pays for up to 2 years. 2. Group Benefit plans: for employees only where there is an employer sponsored group insurance plan in place – see your plan booklet for what is covered. a. Health & Dental benefits: benefits reimbursed to you for health and dental expenses are tax free to you. b. LTD (Long Term Disability): tax free monthly income paid from the 120th day up to age 65. Covers injury and illness. Note benefit amounts and details differ from plan to plan so ask your insurance professional to advise you.
Whats On! • www.whatsonwhiterock.ca
c. Weekly Income: a rare weekly tax free benefit that replaces EI and pays up to 120th. 3. Personally owned plans: are you a self employed, a business owner or an employee with no benefits at work? a. Self employed / business owner / contract worker: your individually owned Health & Dental plan has tax deductible premiums and the benefits paid are tax free. i. Accident & Sickness Wage Loss plans: benefits received by you if you become sick or hurt are tax free. Premiums are not tax deductible. ii. Life insurance and Critical Illness plans: benefits paid out are tax free. Premiums are not tax deductible. b. Employees with no group benefits at work: you can still buy your own individual plans. i. Health and dental: your individually owned plan benefits are tax free. Premiums are not tax deductible. ii. Accident & Sickness Wage Loss plans: benefits paid to you if you become sick or hurt are tax free. Premiums are not tax deductible. Planning for how to handle these tough situations, should they happen, is just the simplest basic planning that any person should do to start the year out right! L E T ’ S G ET O R G A N IZ ED! In the category of “New Year Resolutions”, one of the most popular goals that people make is, to get organized. We set this goal with our best intention in mind. We buy a beautiful planner and swear on our life that this time we are going to use it the whole year. Or we start to really improving our habits and preparing the night before everything we are going to need the next day and so on. Unfortunately, by the end of the month we are doing things the same way we use to do it before. This happen to us every year over and over again… DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY? Lack of discipline, it’s that simple. Can we solve it? Absolutely! Here are 3 ideas to put in practice, once you mastered these 3, you can set 3 new ideas. 1. Write down all your appointments. This not only allows us to be conscience with our time, but will also prevent you from forgetting something important. It doesn’t matter if you use a paper
or an electronic calendar. 2. Prepare things ahead of time: If you have an important meeting, organize and prepare the papers and information you are going to need. Prepare your clothing ahead of time (i.e. the dress, jacket, jewelry and the shoes you are going to wear), this way you have time to make any changes necessary). 3. Declutter your digital life: Set 5 minutes 3 times a week to discard old or irrelevant emails, unsubscribe from lists that no longer interest you. This way you will be saving a great deal of time in the future with a less crowded inbox. But the most important tip of all: Be consistent! Our brain needs only 21 days to change a habit; yes! In only 3 weeks you can eradicate a bad habit that is setting you up for failure; replacing habits consciously is positive and leads to success. Make this 2018 a year of positive change, and you will be thrilled with the results!

HEALTH YOURSELF TO WELLNESS Helping you the way Mother Nature intended
“10 STEPS TO OPTIMAL WELLNESS” Discover the simple steps to building the foundation to great health!
T
he doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease. Thomas Edison (1847 – 1931) The first step to true healing is believing that our bodies are designed to heal ourselves! We have become conscious that optimal health is a balanced integration of mind, body and spirit and we, as human beings, have the innate power to heal ourselves and to assist in the healing of others. Many of us are seeking safe, effective and recognized complementary and alternative wellness services and quality natural health products to maintain our health or to heal our bodies achieve our goals of good health and well-being. When it comes to holistic natural healing as well as preventive healthcare which are paramount to great health, the importance of tailoring the holistic approach to meet the individual's needs is fundamental. Holistic medicine sees health as a positive state of wellbeing, and not simply the absence of disease. It emphasizes the promotion of health and the prevention of disease. Therapeutic modalities are then employed by natural healthcare therapists mobilize the individual's innate capacity for self-healing. An individual's role in their own healing process is emphasized, with much responsibility being handed back to them. These days we are often confused as to what constitutes optimal wellness. We read or hear conflicting reports in the media, online, in books and magazines and often are looking for the one natural wonder pill that’s going to take care of it all. We must also look for the resources, research, education, knowledge, empowerment and support ourselves towards a balanced path to true wellness. There is no exact health program that will fit all people. However, although everyone has individual biochemistry there are some basic, simple rules to building a foundation which are conducive to good vibrant health and this where we must start. The following identifies 10 keys steps to a health supporting lifestyle plan. Using this as a guide can get us started to healing path to optimal wellness: 1. Detoxification & Cleanse We are constantly exposed to harmful toxins in our air, drinking water, food and personal care products. It can serve as a general guide to health by supporting the body with a gentle cleanse and detoxification done periodically throughout the year. This can be simply done by eating a wholesome clean diet or determine a specific type of cleanse.
2. Water Water is critical for life. When it comes to drinking water consider using the following equation: Body weight/2 = oz. of water consumed daily eg 150lb = 75oz (8-9 cups daily) Consider drinking purified water. Avoid stimulants and sugar filled drinks like specialty coffees, soda pop and certain juices. Consider drinking herbal and natural flavored fruit teas. Hydration is key to healthy blood and healthy body. 3. Nutrition Consider consuming wholefoods and reduce processed foods. Eat as much organic produce as possible. Reduce unhealthy fats, sugars and salts. Avoid foods that have additives, preservatives, artificial flavors etc. Manage your calorie intake based on your lifestyle needs.
Whats On! • www.whatsonwhiterock.ca
4. Exercise Physical fitness is a one of the most positive predictors for longevity. Being overweight and obese can lead to many health challenges like heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. Consider walking about 3-4 km per day. 5. Sleep Good quality sleep is critical to our daily functioning body. Depending on our age we must average between 6-9hrs of sleep. This is time for our bodies to re-charge, re-set and rejuvenate. Get into schedule to regulate your natural circadian cycle. 6. Sunlight Adequate exposure to daily sunlight is key for Vitamin D production and leading to regulation of Calcium levels within our bodies. 7. Air Plan to get a minimum 20-30 minutes of fresh air daily ideally in a garden, park, forest or any open tree or grassland area. 10-20 deep breathes of fresh air daily early morning are beneficial. 8. Reducing Stress Stress affects us all … its how we deal with it that’s important. Discover what your triggers are, see how you can change them and determine how you feel you can handle them eg. exercise, deep breathing, meditation, reading, tai chi, walking etc. 9. Nutritional Supplementation A good plan of additional nutrient supplementation is important. Consider taking a high quality multi vitamin/mineral, essential fatty acids, greens and some probiotics daily to support your overall dietary requirements. Introduce some superfoods eg spirulina, chlorophyll, moringa, Maca etc into your daily intake of smoothies. 10. Gratitude Give thanks! At the start of your day and at the end. Be grateful, thankful and appreciative for everything you have .. your health, your family, your purpose, your life …. usic connects us all, it doesn’t matter what genre or style. People can enjoy songs of all kinds, and why not? Who says we must like only one thing? Just as with food, we may have a hankering for something spicy one day, and something sweet another day. Music is all around and affects us whether we realize it or not. For example, imagine a movie without any music at all. Films, TV shows and even commercials utilize sound and music to create feelings in us. There is a freedom in music to communicate our feelings with or without words, just by creating sounds that make us happy or sad, scared, or any number of our emotions.
So don’t feel shy about belting out a tune while in the shower, or in your car in traffic. Join a choir or a band if you want, attend concerts, and let music become the soundtrack to your life. Michelle Carlisle * Performer * Music Teacher * Composer * 604.317.5123 www.michellecarlisle.ca

Are You Ready to Bee a Hero? D
id you know that 1/3 of the world’s food supply is dependant on bees? Often, we forget what goes on behind the scenes of the natural world around us. This is especially true for pollination. While enjoying our delicious BC berries, rarely do we think of the importance of bees in this process. This lack of environmental awareness has resulted in a heavy decline in the bee population. Nonetheless, it still isn’t too late to make a change in our community. Local South Surrey resident Iman Tabari – also known as the ‘Bee Doctor’ – has dedicated the past 14 years to educating, researching, and advocating on behalf of our struggling bee population. After working several years as a physician, Dr. Tabari began to study natural ways to prevent sickness. As owner of BCB Honey farms in Surrey, he believes in the enormous health benefits of cold extract raw honey. Its quite simple: Whatever beneficial properties the plant has is carried over in its pollen. This is then taken by bees to be made into honey. Instead of being something akin to a sweetener, like pasteurized honey, raw honey gives you nutrients, iron, and even protein. How lucky we are to have some of the world’s finest honey at our doorstep!
During an interview, Dr. Tabari explained how we as a community can make small changes that will have big impacts. The easiest way to contribute? It’s simple: don’t cut your dandelions! “This is most crucial during early springtime,” says Tabari, “This is when the bees are most hungry, and dandelions are a primary source of food.” He encourages every member of the community, especially those in positions of authority, to support the planting of wild flowers on otherwise trimmed areas. What a beautiful and positive way to avoid yard work! In an analysis done by bee expert Mark Winston of Simon Fraser University, more pollinators hold the potential for a 20 million dollar increase to the BC blueberry industry. This means bees would no longer need to be imported from Alberta or internationally. If we come together as a community, we can change our environment for the better. Are you Ready to bee a hero? I thought I needed more money to fit in. Those feelings stayed with me as an adult and I was buying

COMFORT KEEPERS “I saw an opportunity to work for myself and at the same time, help people.” Heather Martin, owner/operator of Comfort Keepers in Vancouver and White Rock loves helping others and doesn’t see it as work at all. Having experienced ageism herself, Heather knows the value seniors add to our community. Comfort Keepers strives to make a positive impact and difference in the lives of each senior and family they help. Comfort Keepers knows that every situation and every senior is different and requires a care program which is customized and tailored for them individually. Their Interactive Caregiving® program does just that. As seniors age, it is often normal for them to become less active, feel lonely and begin losing their sense of self. Comfort Keepers knows that the mind-body connection is critical to their overall well-being and quality of life. With the Interactive Caregiving® program, the friendly and professional caregivers of Comfort Keepers create and participate in a variety of activities with the senior in order to help them regain or enhance their independence. Comfort Keepers is in the business of assisting the senior population throughout the Lower Mainland to age gracefully and independently whether it be at home, a retirement residence, long term care facility or even temporarily while in hospital.
But Comfort Keepers offers so much more than just direct client care. Heather is pleased to announce that they have been accredited with Exemplary Standing with Accreditation Canada. This designation means they are meeting the highest standard of excellence in health care using a client-centered approach while offering security and peace of mind to their clients and families. And they are very involved with the community. As an active member of the Semiahmoo Seniors Planning Table, Comfort Keepers volunteered to chair the committee when United Way withdrew its funding. They organize the Community Resources Pop-Up Caravans, For the Health of It Resource Fair and the Coffee and Connect bus tours with the aim of breaking the isolation of older adults and promoting socialization as they learn about important resources that are available to them in their community. They have organized two screenings of the movie The Age of Love about Speed Dating for Seniors and have hosted two speed dating events locally! Comfort Keepers…the care you need wherever you call home.

RECESSION PROOF YOUR BUSINESS! “Before You Spend Another Dime on Useless Advertising…You Need to Read This!” MOST ADS ARE WEAK! Spending money on outside advertising can have a HUGE payoff, but it can also come with a big risk factor as well. If you’re going to advertise, and you should, you need to start thinking of your ad budget as an “investment” not as an “expense”. That’s why you need to be very careful when choosing the most effective type of advertising for your business. If you don’t, you’ll be flushing your hard earned money down the toilet! The good news; 90% of all ads in the Surrey are WEAK. Why? Usually because the Business Owner spends more time worrying about the cost of the campaign, than they do about the content of the ad itself. STRETCH YOUR AD BUDGET Coke©, McDonalds©, CIBC©, etc all seem to have a bottomless wallet when it comes to advertising. The reality is though, that even with big budgets, every $ counts. When it comes to advertising we want it to be affordable and effective. A good ad should pay for itself. If it does that, we can increase our advertising budget, and our market share, both at the same time! WHICH MEDIA IS BEST? There are countless mediums for you to choose from; Magazines Radio, TV, Newspapers, The Internet just to name a few. Someone once said, "The person who tries to save money by not advertising is like the man who stops his clock to save time." Each advertising medium comes with its’ own set of strengths and weaknesses. Do you know what they are?
WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME THIS? First, this is not about trying to convince you to advertise...it's not! However, when done correctly, advertising can generate a massive ROI for your business and one that you should not overlook once you have learned the fundamentals. Second, most of you have learned these fundamentals through the VERY expensive process of trial and error! It never ceases to amaze me how so many companies will spend large amounts of money on advertising, without researching what actually works! Think about it; if you're investing hundreds or thousands of dollars in an ad, wouldn't you want to get it right…the FIRST time? ONE AMAZING WORKSHOP! By the way, my name is Odin Zavier and I teach Business Owners, entrepreneurs & people with really good business ideas, The Secrets they need to GROW their businesses through successful advertising. I have had the privilege of assisting many people, just like you, in developing profit-building advertising initiatives. Now, this is your chance to find out exactly how you can take your business to the next level. I am hosting an upcoming workshop called:
“Discover the Secrets of Successful Advertising”
Odin Zavier Business Building Expert
HOW DO I RESERVE MY SPOT? This amazing workshop will be held in Surrey, BC at The Knight & Day, The fee for the 1/2 Day Workshop is $99.00 (+gst) which includes a FREE workbook and resource materials, networking & lunch. This event only happens once a year.

FEBRUARY 16 TO MARCH 2 YEAR OF THE DOG
2018
is a Year of the Dog. In Chinese astrology, according to a 12 year cycle, every year is related to a Chinese zodiac animal. Every zodiac sign is associated with one of 5 elements: Gold (metal), Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. It is believed that a person’s characteristics are determined by their birth year’s zodiac animal sign and element. This year is the Earth Dog who is believed to be communicative, serious and responsible. In Chinese astrology, Earth is also connected to stability, meditation and religion. Many people will be interested in spiritual or religious study.
WHAT DO PEOPLE DO? Many people clean their homes to welcome the Spring Festival. They put up the red posters with poetic verses on it to their doors, Chinese New Year pictures on their walls, and decorate their homes with red lanterns. It is also a time to reunite with relatives, so many people visit their families this time of the year. In the evening of the Spring Festival Eve, many people set off fireworks and firecrackers, hoping to cast away any bad luck and bring forth good luck. Children often receive “luck” money. Many people wear new clothes and send Chinese New Year greetings to each other. Various activities such as beating drums and striking gongs, as well as dragon and lion dances, are all part of the Spring Festival festivities.

BACKGROUND According to historical documents, on the day when Shun,, who was one of ancient China’s mythological emperors,, came to the throne more than 4000 years ago, he led hiss ministers to worship heaven and earth. From then on, thatt day was regarded as the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar. This is the basic origin of Chinese New Year. China adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1911,, so Chinese New Year was renamed the Spring Festival.
