PUBLISHERS’ NOTE
We’re glad that some of businesses and amenities of our City have been able to re-open, even in a limited capacity. Through this issue of What’s On! Burnaby, you’ll see many of these businesses that are moving forward with strategic adjustments, and we trust you will support them.
The past several months have been one of the more unusual times in our lifetime! The COVID pandemic has brought about some major changes in how we live our lives! In spite of that, there have been many scenarios of people in Burnaby assisting one another, supporting small business and getting behind our health care workers and first responders. While many events have been cancelled or postponed, we’ve learned to “Zoom” and get connected through virtual meetings and groups!
14
You’ll read about the increase of the “market scene” in Burnaby, even developing in this time of pandemic (p.19). And you’ll find out about many events happening virtually or with limitations, such as the 2020 Terry Fox Run (p.22). As we continue moving toward better times, let’s remember to be kind and patient with each other! We’ll get through this together!

Meet Mono Moitra HOW AN INDIAN MATHMETICIAN BECAME A BURNABY “CHICKEN KING” WE ARE CANADA … Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.” In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours in hopes of becoming friends.
We have all heard the stories of so many people, including many of our parents and grandparents, who came to Canada with little more than the clothes on their back. Some came with considerable education but with such a strong desire for better Canadian opportunities that they put aside their education to forge into new careers here in Canada. Mono Moitra came from a strong and successful family in India, but had a similar desire for opportunity in Canada. While he experienced significant loss with the passing of his mother at a young age, his father’s hard work and his extended family’s support provided Mono and his siblings with a solid foundation. He was eventually able to complete both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics. However, after graduation, Mono was only able to get private tutoring jobs and limited teaching roles at a local college, and he longed for more opportunity. His younger sister was already living in Vancouver, so in 1973, at the age of 27, Mono ventured to Canada and stayed with his sister, excited to see what new opportunities he could find here. Little did he know that his mathematics skills would be put to a surprising use for a lifelong career!
After arriving at his sister’s place in East Vancouver, his sister encouraged Mono to take a bit of time to relax and enjoy his new surroundings. But Mono was eager to start working, so he started looking for jobs and came across an ad for people wanting to work who had been in penitentiary. Mono’s English skills were good, but being unfamiliar with this word, “penitentiary”, he decided that he should not overlook this opportunity, so he made an appointment and walked the lengthy distance to the job office. When the clerk who was assisting him asked him what jail he had been in, Mono was, of course, shocked. He explained that he had just moved from India a few days earlier and had never heard of this “penitentiary” and had certainly never been in one! After some explanations and laughs, the clerk kindly suggested a couple of businesses where he could apply for work. One was at a Church’s Chicken outlet on Hastings Street, so Mono hustled down there right away and enquired about the job. They were surprised to learn of his interest in working there, given that he had a Master of Science degree, but told him they would consider it. As it turned out, before Mono got home to his sister’s place, they had called and asked him to come in to start work the next morning. It was to be the beginning of a 44 year career at Church’s Chicken! Mono quickly rose through the ranks of leadership at Church’s and his mathematics skills proved beneficial for quick and logical decision-making. He eventually became the Director of Operations for Church’s in Canada and oversaw many developments in the company, including the highly successful move to the use of non-trans fat oils for frying the chicken. Throughout the years at Church’s, Mono constantly dreamed of starting his own company. Together with some

Finally, Mono and his four friends decided to launch out on their own in 2016, even though Mono was now in his early 70’s! Together the five friends formed Hi Five Chicken and opened their first store in South Vancouver. Since then, they have opened two more locations in Burnaby, on 10th Avenue and Hastings Street, with a third Burnaby location soon to open on Kingsway. They also know the value of giving back to the community. Mono and his now two other partners at Hi Five Chicken, Milind Palashetkar and Suraj Sharma are regular sponsors of community events. They also have programs for seniors and an ongoing discount for members of the local police forces! Mono is an energetic fellow who can never imagine retirement, but he’s learned through the years that it’s not all about work. As time has passed, he’s returned to more of the things that bring him immense joy. He has a great excitement for music and art. In fact, he’s created some 150 paintings over the past many years. He’s written poetry for decades and has a passion for language. Mono Moitra is often called the “Chicken King, but this enthusiastic and passionate man is much more focused on living life to the fullest. “I enjoy learning and living and talking to people, he says. “Life is too short to miss out on the true joy of living!

Brentwood Area Enjoying “Community Days” at Grosvenor Location By Gary Wilson While the COVID-19 pandemic has kept the whole world from getting together for community events and all sorts of activities, it has not stopped the activity of the Burnaby market community. In fact, during these past several months, Burnaby has gone from having a single farmers market to having three market-type options for the community! Of course, the Burnaby Farmers Market has operated every Saturday morning for many years at Burnaby City Hall on the corner of Canada Way and Deer Lake Parkway. The Artisan Farmers Market Society that operates the Market had even continued running the market through last winter, much to the delight of many people in the community. As the COVID-19 crisis hit in mid-March, the Artisan Society had to put the brakes on their Market, just like many businesses and activities throughout the province. However, the provincial authorities quickly ruled farmers markets to be essential food services and the Artisan Society went to work on how they could operate safely within the new COVID protocols. By mid-April, they were able to reopen the market at City Hall with a new set-up and strict procedures to ensure the safety of customers, vendors and their own staff.
the site where Brentwood Community Days happens. The mural is entitled “Pursuit of Chance” and, as Young explains, “I’m looking at the mural’s vibrancy as a forecast for the neighbourhood, a soon-to-be vibrant space.” B r e n t w o o d Community Days includes activities on both Saturdays and Sundays on the Grosvenor Americas property located at the corner of Alpha Avenue and Dawson Street, just a block south of the Brentwood Skytrain station. Every weekend since the early part of the summer, this site has been a hub of activity, welcoming hundreds of customers each weekend. On Saturdays, from 11 am to 6 pm, the Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival holds a Take Out Food Truck at the location. Starting on alternate weeks, the Food Truck organizers moved to weekly Saturday events in late July. Each week, multiple food trucks are on site serving up tasty dishes to customers eager to get out and do something in the neighbourhood. A few other vendors are also participating.
Not only did that single market continue during the early stages of the pandemic, but the Burnaby community saw two new market-related options open! Thanks largely to the efforts of Grosvenor Americas and their desire to make part of their property in the Brentwood area available, Brentwood Community Days was established in June. Grosvenor even commissioned local artist, Drew Young, to paint a 4,000 square foot mural on a wall overlooking
On Sundays, from 10 am to 3 pm, the Artisan Farmers Market Society hosts the Brentwood Farmers Market. Much like their market at the City Hall location, the Brentwood Market has dozens of vendors offering all sorts of fresh, Gary Wilson the Co-owner and Publisher of What’s On! Burnaby. local produce, various prepared foods and other artisan products. Farmers Market Manager, Maria Lennox, reports that, “We’re getting a really good response from people in the area and they’re quite excited that this is in their neighbourhood. It’s definitely been more challenging to do it in this COVID season, but everybody that comes in here is positive. They’re happy that this space is being used for a Farmers Market.” Of course, both the Brentwood Farmers Market and the Take Out Food Truck Festival are operating under the current COVID-19 guidelines and following safety protocols as they look out for the health of their customers and staff. Part of that means that customers can’t sit to enjoy a meal in the market area after purchasing it from one of the vendors. However, that hasn’t stopped all sorts of people from
picking up a favourite meal and taking it home or finding a spot nearby to enjoy their delicious treat. This new abundance of Burnaby markets is a testament to the ingenuity and vision of our local community. It’s proof that, in spite of what problems we face (even pandemics!), with some dedication and a will to succeed, we can move forward. It’s also great to have some great outdoor places to go and shop on the weekend!

ONE ON with ONE Fred Fox
Fred Fox with brother Terry
By Eiji Yoshikawa
Professional boxing trainer and writer, Eiji Yoshikawa goes “one on one” with people in Burnaby who are “on a mission”! In this column, Eiji talks with Fred Fox, Brother of Canadian hero, Terry Fox. Terry was a student here in Burnaby at SFU when he was diagnosed with cancer. His courageous battle and loss of his lower right leg sparked his now famous Marathon of Hope 40 years ago. Since 1980, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $800 million for cancer research. Eiji: Terry became so famous 40 years ago and became such a Canadian icon. But for you, he was your younger brother who had the same breakfast and played with you as you grew up together. What was he like?
Terry Fox (left) with siblings Darrell, Judith and eldest brother Fred (right)
Fred: Terry was an average ordinary Canadian kid. We were taught to work as hard as we could and not give up. We were always challenging each other. Terry, being my younger brother, was sometimes a pain in the rear end, but he was always determined, always hard-working, never quit, and always tried his hardest. These were just the traits that were instilled in us by our parents.
Eiji: An ordinary kid. It proves that we ordinary people can also make miracles come true. Fred: Yes, Terry often said during the Marathon of Hope that anything is possible if you try. You try to make an effort. Terry believed that not everything would come easy. You have to work hard for what you get and that’s what he did. He knew the Marathon of Hope wasn’t going to be easy, but he was willing to make the sacrifice. He ran everyday because he knew he was helping others.
Eiji: What did you think when he said that he was going to run across Canada? Fred: When he told me his plan, I said to Terry “That’s awesome. Good for you! I’ll see you when you get back home.” We never imagined the impact that he would have on our country of Canada and so many people around the world. I remember seeing Terry and his buddy Doug Alward off at the Vancouver Airport. And later, when he was arriving in Toronto and we were waiting in the stadium with thousands of people. It was amazing! Eiji: He’s a public figure and a national hero but for you, he’s your little brother. It must have been very difficult for you to talk about him all these years. Thank you so much for overcoming the pain and for making speeches everywhere to touch many people’s hearts. Fred: Yes, he is a family member and for me, my parents, our sister Judith, and our younger brother Darrell, it’s been difficult. But as the years have gone by, because of the people around the world who have been inspired by Terry, it makes it easier for us. So, thank you to each of you for your support! The Terry Fox Foundation is celebrating the 40th year since the original Marathon of Hope in 1980. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual event will be held in 2020 as a Virtual Run on September 20th. For more information about how you can participate, visit terryfox.org/run.

YOUR GUIDE TO SENIOR LIVING OPTIONS IN BC Understanding the differences between independent living, assisted living and long-term care. Thinking about moving into a retirement community but not sure which type is right for you? The good news is that there’s a wide range of options out there, each catering to seniors of varying needs, activity levels and lifestyle expectations. Start your search with this simple guide to senior living settings. Independent Living Residences The objective of independent living communities is to enable seniors to continue to pursue active, social, healthy lifestyles for as long as possible. Emphasis is on comfortable, safe surroundings and a stimulating active-aging environment. Features common to independent living residences:
• Private suites with access to shared social areas like dining rooms, activity rooms, outdoor green spaces and patios. • Services that include weekly housekeeping, transportation to appointments and nutritious chefcurated meal programs. • Onsite physical and mental fitness classes like pole walking and cognitive enhancement. • Cultural and social programming, including writing workshops and offsite excursions. • Close proximity to community centres, parks, libraries, boutiques and cafés. • Self-directed wellness complemented by safety features like 24-hour staff. Outside health care providers can be arranged at the residents’ discretion. • Usually self-funded and privately owned.
• General services that include housekeeping, healthy meal programs and a 24-hour emergency response system. • Services provided by a designated care support team (employed by the community or contracted out), which can limit the choice of provider by the senior. • Health and wellness promotion, crafts and onsite social activities like movie nights and bingo. • Opportunities can include assisted walks and excursions like weekly shopping trips. • Regular assistance with daily living activities, including eating, mobility, dressing and personal hygiene. • Medication management including central storage, administering or monitoring. • Regulated by the B.C. Office of the Assisted Living Registrar. Long-term Care Homes Older adults who can no longer live independently or direct their own care, due to physical and/or cognitive health conditions, can turn to long-term care homes or
Assisted Living Residences Similar to independent living, assisted living provides an environment for older adults seeking to remain as safe and socially engaged as possible. That said, assisted living residents tend to be less mobile and require help with daily living activities – hence the varying levels of onsite care. Features common to assisted living residences: • Private suites or units with access to common spaces like dining rooms and gardens. 26

nursing homes. Compared to seniors in independent or assisted living communities, those in long-term care are much less mobile and require higher levels of care. Features common to long-term care homes: •M edical, standard or shared accommodations with access to common areas like dining rooms and lounges. Some properties feature patios and landscaped gardens. •G eneral services that include housekeeping, laundry and daily meals. •2 4-hour professional nursing care complemented by help with daily tasks and hygiene. •A ccess to ongoing planned social and recreational activities like music therapy and family participatory events. •L icensed and government regulated. Continuing Care (Aging in Place) Some seniors’ residences serve a cross-section of older adults, combining the above three living types under one roof. Inside a continuing care home, independent and assisted living residents live alongside seniors with complex mental and physical needs. As such, services and amenities cater to a wider aging-in-place population, with activity options for independent seniors perhaps not as extensive as detailed above.
Deciding which senior living option is best for you doesn’t have to be difficult. Ultimately, it comes down to which type of residence best aligns with your level of health, mobility, fitness and independence, as well as lifestyle choice. Contributed by Mulberry PARC. Goodbye late fines. Hello library!

Your library membership is freedom to explore, learn and connect. Late fines shouldn’t get in your way.

On July 13, we stopped charging for overdue items and eliminated existing late fines. Through our conversations with you, we learned that late fines keep you from using the library. Burnaby is a stronger community when everyone can freely access resources and information, at every stage of life.
Our branches are open with limited services. We’ll continue adapting our services throughout COVID-19, with guidelines from Fraser Health and City of Burnaby Occupational Health and Safety.
Say goodbye to late fines, and say hello to stories, ideas, curiosity. Hello library! For more information, visit www.bpl.bc.ca/goodbye-late-fines.

Thank you for supporting Burnaby families. COVID-19 may have physically distanced us, but your support feels as strong as ever. Physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly difficult for vulnerable families who often depend on community networks and resources in times of crisis. With challenges come opportunities. We are grateful to our funders and sponsors for their critical support during the transition and adaptation of our family education programs as we faced uncertain times. Their important contributions have provided the means to deliver innovative and timely resources to families most in need in our community including 400 family resource kits and an online series of “expert talks” for parents to explore topics relating to family life during the first months of the pandemic, as many of us were learning to cope with new routines.
Safety regulations during COVID-19 resulted in more home time for families. In response, BFL assembled and delivered activity resource kits to keep children meaningfully engaged at home. (Photo credits: Alma Hernandez)
With funders and supporters by our side we will keep making a difference in the lives of families in ways that are meaningful and dependable, and when it matters most. Thank you for being here with us.
We also extend our gratitude to program partners and community supporters: • Art’s Automotive • Burnaby School District – LINC Program • Burnaby Public Library • Charlford House Society for Women • Family Services of Greater Vancouver
• MOSAIC – LINC Program • City of Burnaby staff and Council • Hon. Katrina Chen, MLA Burnaby-Lougheed • Raj Chouhan, Deputy Speaker, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds • Hon. Anne Kang, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake
For more information about our COVID-19 adapted family programs and resources, please visit our website. We are grateful for your donations, if you are able to give.

Thank you to local MLAs, Hon. Katrina Chen (centre) and Hon. We also thank the TELUS BC LML East Field Support Team for doing some home deliveries. (Photo credits: BFL)
