Put the Magic back in
Christmas Shopping
~Alison Belbin
This Christmas set out with the intention to surprise someone. Aim for that magical wide-eyed glee, but do so without relying on quantity, expense or predictability. Let’s be honest, it’s a daunting task to cross names off a shopping list. There is the weight of expectations, the ‘guidance’ of those on our list and our own desire to find that one perfect gift, the one that ‘makes’ Christmas. It shows on the strained faces of similarly well-meaning shoppers who share that same sense of responsibility and urgency. Frustration oozes from the line-ups at box stores and fumes in parking lots jammed with vehicles. Quite the losing battle, one that usually ends in the hurried wrapping of mass-produced trinkets while declaring oneself finished with the season before it has even begun.
First, treat yourself to a coffee from a local bakery then simply head out to discover. Take your time and walk, explore our local Nanaimo shops, make a point to go through craft fairs or the shops on the waterfront. Stop for lunch. Talk to store owners who know their products. Treasure hunt on your own terms. Take pride in being able to say, “I thought of you when I saw this!” But also feel confident the money you spend inside a local business stays within our community. What circulates within our community not only strengthens our local economy, it inspires growth of the entrepreneurial spirit.
This year vow to do it differently. Turn it all around and make gift-giving about discovery, about enjoying the art of giving.

home Home ownership can seem an impossible dream for low-income families. High interest rates, property taxes and the costs of maintaining a home – all on top of monthly mortgage payments – can keep this goal just out of reach for many.
But Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island (HFHMVI) is changing that, one family and one home at a time. Over the past 12 years this non-profit, non-governmental charitable organization has helped 10 families in the mid-Vancouver Island area make their home owning dreams a reality. They have done this by building and selling them safe, affordable homes at no profit with an interest-free mortgage. But just as it takes a community to raise a child, it takes a community to raise a HFH home: volunteers and community partners

provide vital financial and hammerswinging assistance in the building of each and every abode. The recipient families themselves put in 500 ‘sweat equity’ hours each before their homes become a reality. As HFH likes to stress, this is a hand-up, not a hand-out, and by building homes they build hope for a much better future. Habitat for Humanity cordially invites you to a HOME DEDICATION CEREMONY to celebrate the completion of our two newest Habitat for Humanity homes at: 608 and 612 Hecate Street, Nanaimo, BC. Ceremony is on December 14 at 1 p.m. We will officially welcome the new homeowners Jo-Anne Graham and son Raymond and Laura and Kerry Sawchyn and son Tyler. Introductions and welcome by Teresa Pring, CEO of HFHMVI.

Blast into the new year!
One of the best first steps you can take when you start a weight loss program is to cut back on your salt intake; you’ll quickly notice a difference. While excess sodium can lead to high blood pressure, it also causes weight gain because it leads to water retention and bloating. Basically, our bodies counter-balance high levels of sodium by absorbing/retaining water in our cells.

health tions, we eat too much of it. A new study completed in July by the World Action on Salt and Health (WASH) actually found that foods sold in Canada have more sodium than the same products sold in the US. The biggest offenders; snack foods, fast foods, canned soups and vegetables, processed foods, frozen foods and condiments (ketchup and mayonnaise in particular). We recommend you limit your salt intake to less than 1200 mg per day. Here’s how you do it » »

• Eat fresh (no frozen or processed). lower sodium foods, such as: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish and poultry. CHoose fruits and vegetables as snacks rather than salty snacks. If you eat processed foods, look for low sodium versions. • Use a salt substitute (or herbs instead of table salts. Herbal Magic’s Flavo-Magic is a slat substitute without sodium. It’s great for those who enjoy the flavour of salt in their food. Pepper is also a good substitute. Dr Regan Tessis, ND for Herbal Life

27 There must be something in the water. How else could anyone explain the disproportionate amount of talent that seems to spring from our little corner of the world. From singing talents such as Diana Krall to David Gogo and the up and coming Jayden Holman, to actors like Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds) Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill) and Cameron Bright (Twilight) to athletes such as M’s stand-out Adam Paulencu who recently signed with the Rockies.
Local Talent
The artists and athletes Nanaimo has produced number in the several hundreds and range from painters and singers to writers and dancers. Well you can add one more to the list! A local author of note is Nanaimo’s own Dianne Magor who has written and co-illustrated 2 very powerful and original works. The first book. Brittany’s Journey is about the miracle of birth and the love of family. Magor has a unique and beautiful way of interpreting and relating how we come into this earthly plane. The second book, Lauren’s Wish follows the first and celebrates the union and love of two sisters and a wish come true. Both books tug at the heart strings in the tradition of Nancy Tafuri’s I love you little one and Munsch’s I’ll Love you Forever Quantities limited for more information and to order please email: nanaimo@whatsondigest.com
