Yessiree, folks, our Festival this year is about folk and country music! It’s time you experienced les musiciens country et folkloriques from across Canada at the 12th edition of the Maple Sugar Festival du Sucre d’Érable, taking place in Nanaimo’s Beban Park Auditorium. The French Canadian food is fabulous: tourtières (succulent meat pies), ragoût de porc (tasty pork stew), a traditional pancake breakfast featuring the purest maple syrup, tire sur la neige (toffy on snow), amazing poutine, and more! And you can burn calories afterward as you dance, stomp your feet, and clap your hands to country and traditional folk musicians and singers. Amazing musicians include country sensation Guylaine Tanguay, who headlines a diverse schedule of performers, along with popular folk groups La Ligue du Bonheur and Pastiche. There will also be interactive events and music for kids. Ben La Barouette

and Major Conrad Flapps join beloved Festival veterans Frenchie the Clown and Sand Northrup. You can also browse crafts and community booths and benefit from retail therapy. This three-day event celebrates fun as you learn about French Canadian traditions! So share in the joie de vivre of Vancouver Island’s largest bilingual festival from February 15 to 17, 2013!

WhatsOn

This June marks 11 years living in Nanaimo for myself and my family: such an incredible part of the world and such a vibrant and energetic community. My wife and I purchased a home in Nanaimo in 2002 after leaving big city life behind for a chance at raising our family in a setting reminiscent to our own upbringing: mine in White Rock and hers in Horseshoe Bay. The Nanaimo house was a “builder’s special” that was within our means and suited our needs. The location was perfect for us even if some of the features were dated. Our goal was to renovate the house room by room upgrading it to a standard better suited to our needs. With two kids and a busy

home life it was a challenge and the pace was more than slow it was, at times, non-existent. Still, we never gave up on the dream of giving our humble home the make-over it needed.

This past November, we decided to get a quote from a top Nanaimo renovation company called Creative Concepts Carpentry. We made an appointment with the owner of Creative Concepts, Darren Seaman, to come over for a look at our situation. We simply told Darren what we wanted. We talked about our budget and our expectations. Darren had some great ideas for saving time and money. He was very easy to talk to and told us right up front what he estimated the costs would be. What’s

Your Vision. Our Expertise.

more, after seeing the very high caliber of work he does on his website creativeconceptscarpentry.ca and seeing the custom homes he’s worked on we knew that with Darren and Creative Concepts our home would be getting a taste of the good life – so we went for it! The result was more than we could have wished for and was even on budget. I’m sure the value of our home has increased but that’s not the best part. It’s being able to spend time inside without always looking at things that need doing. It’s the peace of mind knowing your home is not just “finished” but done well. Simon Rideout

health HAPPINESS IMPROVES HEALTH & LENGTHENS LIFE By Dr. Ansel Updegrove - Long Lake Chiropractic. 3955 Victoria Ave NanaimioV9T 2A1 (250) 758-1532

Want to feel better and improve your health? Start by focusing on the things that bring you happiness. Healing comes from above down from the inside out.

A review of more than 160 scientific studies of human and animal subjects has found “clear and compelling evidence” that -- all else being equal -- happy people tend to live longer and experience better health than their unhappy peers. A study that followed nearly 5,000 university students for more than 40 years, for example, found that those who were most pessimistic as students tended to die younger than their peers. An even longer-term study that followed 180 Catholic nuns from early

11

adulthood to old age found that those who wrote positive autobiographies in their early 20s tended to outlive those who wrote more negative accounts of their young lives.

While happiness might not by itself prevent or cure disease, the evidence that positive emotions and enjoyment of life contribute to better health and a longer lifespan is stronger than the data linking obesity to reduced longevity. PATHWAYS TO HAPPINESS In an early phase of positive psychology research, University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson of the University of Michigan chose three pathways to examine: • Feeling good. Seeking pleasurable emotions and sensations, from the hedonistic model or reaching happiness by maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain.

• Doing good. Searching for meaning outside yourself, tracing back to Aristotle, which emphasizes knowing your true self and acting in accordance with your virtues. THINGS THAT WON’T MAKE YOU HAPPY Here are some widely held myths about what will bring happiness:

• Money and material things. The question of whether money can buy happiness has, for more than 30 years, shown that people in poor countries are happier when their basic necessities are covered. But any money beyond that doesn’t make much difference in happiness level.

• Youth. Being young and physically attractive has little or no bearing on happiness. In a study published by Richard Easterlin in 2006 in the Journal of Economic Psychology, not only did being young fail to contribute to happiness, but adults grew steadily happier as they moved into and through middle age. After that, happiness levels began to decline slowly as health problems and other life problems emerged.

Food for thought. Food for life. POWER HOUSE

pet

tips...

Good fish aquarium maintenance doesn't have to be a huge time commitment-it's mainly a little elbow grease and a lot of common sense.

Here are some simple tips to keep your fish happy and healthy:

KEEP THE WATER CLEAN. Water is a fish's air, and when it isn't clean it's very difficult for them to get the oxygen they need. A water filtration system helps keep it the water pure on a day-to-day basis, but to really ensure a good environment for your fish, change 20% of the aquarium's water twice a week.

CLEAN THE TANK MONTHLY. Once a month, do a complete deep-clean of your aquarium. Completely replace the water, wash the gravel, change the filter and thoroughly clean every inch of the tank. Do not use soap or detergent to clean the tankhot water works just fine and won't make your fish sick.

CHECK THE TEMPERATURE and pH regularly. Too much fluctuation in water temperature can be very stressful for fish. Make sure your aquarium is in a stable place away from A/C vents or direct sunlight. Test the pH of the water when you're doing your twice-a-week replacement, and if it's off, you can add chemicals to balance it (you can find them at your local pet store).

Make me yours!

Pets teach kids about care and responsibility.

Nanaimo’s only independently owned full-line pet store Salt & Fresh Water Fish Puppies - Birds - Small Animals - Lizards & More 250-751-0751 • Nanaimo North Town Centre 149-4750 Rutherford Road

WATCH YOUR FISH. If your fish are sick, they'll show it. Watch for patches on their scales, sliminess, clamped fins, erratic behavior...just about anything that doesn't look normal. If you have a fish you think is sick, quarantine it while you figure out what's wrong with it. There are a lot of good websites out there to help diagnose fish diseases and appropriate treatments. And of course, be sure to feed your fish regularly!

joke. Two brooms were hanging in the closet and after a while they got to know each other so well, they decided to get married. One broom was, of course, the bride broom, the other the groom broom. The bride broom looked very beautiful in her white dress. The groom broom was handsome and suave in his tuxedo. The wedding was lovely. After the wedding, at the wedding dinner, the bridebroom leaned over and said to the groom-broom, ‘I think I am going to have a little Whisk Broom!’ ‘Impossible!’ said the groom broom. ‘We haven’t event swept together!’

Whats On Digest Nanaimo Interviews Stewart Mclean: appearing this month at the Port Theatre

Whats On Digest: You are a best-selling author and famous broadcaster. In addition you’ve been referred to in the media as “Canada’s Greatest Storyteller”. My question to you is: what do you think it is about hearing a story that we as human beings find so compelling?

as primary school children becomes who we are as adults? Kind of a philosophical question I suppose but there it is…

McLean: Elementary school. (pauses) It’s hard to recall. High school I was an underdog – in a world of top dogs. I didn’t fit in – was “less than” rather than “equal to”. In elementary school I McLean: I think we’ve wanted to hear stories since didn’t have a clear picture of myself. I think I was we were living in caves. It’s a way of understanding slowly learning that the world was a complicated the world around us and the world inside of us. You place and I couldn’t do things as good as other feel a connection to the world and to life – your kids. There was always somebody better at cards, inner self and outer self and on all sorts of levels. or hockey or what have you. Elementary school It’s how we relate to the world. Great leaders are was a series of defeats. What I hadn’t learned great story tellers; for example Winston Churchill was that not everybody can become as good as was a great story teller, people believed him and they wish they were at everything. You learn there came together en masse to rally around a cause. We has to be one champ at any given time and you tell ourselves stories about love and about failure won’t necessarily be the top dog in that moment or at that pursuit; but you will be equal with and we feel reassured by hearing them. others in the sense that they are also striving Whats On Digest: Your stories and your delivery for something. It takes finding something can evoke a range of emotions. How do you maintain that you will be good at or enjoy in order your composure particularly on stage and avoid being that you can become more forgiving of yourself for the things you are swept up in the moment? no good at. Elementary school is the beginning of a long road of Mclean: I am swept up in the moment when on discovery – which is a long and stage. I shed everything of my day to day life – in hard and painful road – I’ve the good moments – I become the story, I lose myself been lucky enough to keep - I am the guy - I am the story. It’s going well when I moving along. can lose a sense of self and feel that connection with the audience of being in the moment. Whats On Digest: To follow up to my 1st Whats On Digest: As a father of school-aged question about the kids, and indeed my oldest is the same age as the value and power of fictional Sam from your very popular vinyl café stories and storyseries of books and radio shows, I wonder if you’d telling; we are living tell me what you were like in elementary school in the Digital and and how much, in your opinion, of who we are Internet age. By the

same token human beings have been drawn to live performances for thousands of years and probably a lot longer than that. What are your thoughts on the future of live theatre? McLean: I’m not an observer of these things. The obvious thought is that we have been gathering by the fire for, like you said, thousands of years listening to stories. The bards, the minstrels the fellow on the radio the guy by fire - musicians on stage or actors on the stage or the screen; it seems burned into our DNA to come together and observe; to listen to stories. It’s not going to be blown out like a match. It will continue not in forms I can imagine I’m sure - but it will go on.

23

comment that relates to the idea that there is a common humanity present in your work that tends to unite people. What do you say to that? Mclean: You say that but I couldn’t say that (laughs). I have spoken to people listening in one part of the country that tell me about a friend or relative that listens in another part of the country and how they like to talk on the phone after the show about their favorite part. I see grandparents in the audience with several generations of their families listening and enjoying the show. I just love to see everyone “digging” the same story. It makes me happy makes me feel like I’m doing something right….even if I have no idea what that is.

Whats On Digest: Some people like to fish or go camping, others like to go to the movies or take in a concert. Thinking in terms of leisure time, what does Stuart Mclean do for fun?

Whats On Digest: Last question Stuart and thank you again for doing this. As a successful author and radio personality your position is enviable and I can imagine that to some the success you’ve had may seem un-attainable. What advice can you McLean: I like to go to bookstores, I like to cook. offer to anyone reading this in terms of following I like to wander around, write to my friends. I your dreams? like to read. McLean: Follow ‘em. Follow ‘em. Do it. I Whats On Digest: You are performing your wanted to be a writer on the radio and was afraid show in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in the near of that – I was as afraid of success as much as future. To some extent Vancouver Island has a I was afraid of failure. I was lucky to get a job regional identity distinct from other areas of the on the radio and lucky because it’s what I love. country, and yet, your stories seem to resonate You don’t have to be smart – there are plenty with those of us calling Vancouver Island our of geniuses wasting away in the basements of home equally with Canadians in other parts of the this country. You don’t have to be a handsome, country. I guess the question is really more of a athletic, or intelligent person – you just have to be a focused person and keep at it. It’s like people who quit smoking; it is the ones that try and fail that end up finally being successful in kicking the habit. If you fail over and over at something – but keep trying you will eventually figure out how to get there. Nothing else matters, not looks or brains or how many connections you have if you can’t stick with it. It takes effort and commitment - you have to do it – that’s all. When you listen to great athletes say that they “can’t believe” that they are where they are it’s because they may not feel gifted but, they have just worked hard and not given up. It’s not the gifted it’s the “gutted” that do it; they “gut it out”.

Whats n Wheels Remember when a handshake could seal a deal? When businesses knew return customers by name and welcomed new ones with a smile? When a hot cup of coffee was always on? Step into any Kal Tire and that’s the kind of place you’ll find. That’s because the business – BC-family owned and operated since 1953 – prides itself on going the extra mile for each and every customer. Whether it’s a need for new tires, new wheels, or mechanical maintenance for your vehicle that brought you through the door, Kal Tire is happy to help with fast and friendly service. “Our motto is “True Service” because that’s what we genuinely offer”, says

Steve St. Cyr, assistant manager of Kal Tire on Norwell Drive. “There’s a culture here, where we really pride ourselves on going above and beyond our customers’ expectations”. Kal Tire is Canada’s largest independent tire dealer with 240 corporate locations nationwide, four of which are in Nanaimo. Besides carrying a dizzying array of tires for all types of weather and all types of vehicles - including passenger, commercial, loader and ATV - they offer custom wheels, batteries and full mechanical repair. “We are much more than just tires”, says St. Cyr. Indeed, the Kal Tire website acknowledges that “Service is what we’re all about, we just happen to sell tires!”

That said, the challenge of winter driving can make tire traction a hot topic around the shop’s coffeepot at this time of year. St. Cyr points out that Kal Tire is the exclusive Canadian carrier of the Nokian “all-weather tire” which is also a certified snow tire. “This is the only tire of its kind,

Interior restoration, Convertibles, Boat Tops & More 7439 Industrial Rd RR 2, Lantzville 250-933-0778

and it’s attractive to many drivers because it eliminates the need for seasonal tire changes”. Highly trained technicians, quality products and a friendly atmosphere.... now that sounds like peace of mind down the road.
