Cover Story:

This time Next Year! Fitness and nutrition have always been a major part of my life. I was fortunate to have a Mom that raised us that way. I grew up doing track and field and cross country running. I started getting interested in the weight room at 19 and got my first fitness certification. I trained and taught classes into my 20’s until I started having kids and then working out just became my “free mommy time” I got more serious two years ago when I started training with Jeff after I lost my mom and I needed a focus to shift my mind away from the grief and I’ve never looked back.I started competing last year and now at 40 I’m hooked . New years is the perfect time to set goals in all areas of your life for the year to come. When it comes to fitness it’s important to set realistic goals so that you don’t set yourself up for failure and become frustrated. Changes whatever your goals are takes time and they won’t happen overnight, so be patient with your self, and look ahead to where you want to be at this time next year. Sarah McDonald, Personal Trainer WCM Fitness

Training and health have always been my passion. I started weight training at 14 and never stopped. I’ve had a decade of training clients and I’ve been competing for eight years, and became the 2011 Western Canadian Natural bodybuilding Champion. I’ve trained figure and bodybuilders up to competing at the national level. I left the oil patch 3 years ago to make a living doing what I love full time. The opportunity to buy the gym just came around at the right time so we went for it. Sarah and I both are getting ready for the World Championship Qualifier in April. There’s many reasons why people hire a personal trainer, whether it’s to have a goal or to just have someone push you harder than you would push yourself. Some clients come for rehabilitation and others for weight loss or maintenance. We believe that everyone should be able to afford good health, therefore we keep our gym memberships and training affordable. Jeff Messinger, Personal Trainer, Award winning Body Builder. Spirit Radio - 88.7FM The station was launched in 2011 by Terry Somerville and Trever Wickens of Total Change Ministries and initially it featured a mainly-music format with the slogan “the best music this side of heaven” but it also had commentaries, prayers, messages for sponsors and community information. The station’s content is branching out to include a number of new features, most notably a new live show weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. hosted by veteran journalist John Twigg, which will include segments on community issues, coming events, local musicians, world religious news, commentaries and many other items such as contests for prizes. Twigg also will continue producing his new weekly radio show for Spirit-FM called the Holy Spirit Rock Show which is broadcast and streamed on Fridays at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and features classic rock and roll songs that have Bible-based themes. It is rebroadcast on Saturdays at 3 a.m., 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Somerville, a renowned evangelist and healer, also will continue producing the morning program he has been doing since

the station’s inception though it too will be including some new features, and the station’s general content and website will be expanded too. “We’re honoured to have become a part of the daily lives of many people in the Campbell River and Comox Valley areas and we’re looking forward to reaching even more people in the year ahead. “Many people probably will have a hard time believing that groups such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and The Doors have songs that are Bible-based but I can show people where dozens of such songs have lyrics that are based on Bible scriptures.” “Music is a great device to help people understand and remember “The hit song Dangerous Times by Courtenay’s Sue Medley is an excellent example of how classic rock music can be used to do that. Another prime example is the Beatles song The Word, which is based on John 1.” The station’s website also includes a facility for making donations on-line and an easy-to-use listen-live icon. www.spirit-fm.ca

Whats On Technology

to a Web site or your computer. This means you can do things like e-mail photos of your trip while you’re still on vacation, or get pictures directly off your camera and to an editor quickly if you’re a photojournalist. As with non-WiFi cameras, your choice of camera will be dependent on how you plan to use it. WiFienabled point-and-shoot cameras retail for a little bit more than their plug-and-play counterparts, from about $200 on up.

Cool Camera Stuff

If you’re worried the simplicity of having a WiFi camera comes at the cost of image quality, your concerns are well directed. Certain models, especially early ones, may upload files at lower resolutions than what is stored on the camera. The high-quality shots remain on the camera, so they can still be transferred through a wired connection when you have the chance. You won’t have that problem with most newer models, though. So, once you’ve got your WiFi-enabled camera in your hands, you’ll need to set up basic features, automatic functions and the Web site or computer to which you plan to upload your pictures.

With the rise of social media and file sharing, consumers have become accustomed to capturing spur-of-the-moment photo oppor t unities on their smartphone device. But, smartphones do not offer the same image quality and offer less creative control than a traditional digital camera, leaving consumers torn beaten capturing quicksharing photos or capturing truly stunning photographic imagery. WiFi cameras let you upload pictures automatically to your computer or Web space from any location -- as long as there’s an internet connection. In this day and age, it may seem a cumbersome to connect something, such as a camera, to your computer to transfer information. WiFi cameras, which first made an appearance in 2005, are aimed at solving cable clutter by making it possible to transfer photos wirelessly from a digital camera

Panasonic has filled the gap with the LUMIX SZ5, A slim and compact digital camera which features 10x Optical zoom and integrates Wi-Fi connectivity quickly and seamlessly.

of the month Passengers on a small commuter plane are waiting for the flight to leave. The entrance opens, and two men walk up the aisle, dressed in pilots’ uniforms--both are wearing dark glasses, one is using a seeing-eye dog, and the other is tapping his way up the aisle with a cane. Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin; but the men enter the cockpit, the door closes, and the engines start up. The passengers begin glancing nervously around, searching for some sign that this

just a little practical joke. None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and faster down the runway, and people at the windows realize that they’re headed straight for the water at the edge of the airport territory. As it begins to look as though the plane will never take off, that it will plow into the water, panicked screams fill the cabin--but at that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air. The passengers relax and laugh a little sheepishly, and soon they have all retreated into their magazines, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in good hands. Up in the cockpit, the copilot turns to the pilot and says, “You know, Bob, one of these days, they’re going to scream too late, and we’re all gonna die.

Club Fitness on track

Staying on track with your health and fitness has to be enjoyable and something that you look forward to. When we created our Gym, we had two things in mind. 1. To create an environment that was clean and user friendly, with well maintained equipment 2. To have staff available to help, so no piece of equipment would be intimidating and anyone at any age could feel absolutely confident and comfortable. Teaching all our members, how to properly use

Protein a Must The “tools” your body needs to repair damaged muscle tissue is mainly protein. Protein is used as a building block for muscle tissue. If your body doesn’t have access to protein, it won’t be able to effectively repair damaged muscle tissue and instead of getting stronger, you’ll get weaker.

equipment is vital, plus how to stay safe with a direction for each individual. We realize that getting focused and making a commitment takes time and mental preparedness, we are here to motivate you and keep you on track, not with pressure, but qualified support. At the end of your workout, your more than likely going to walk out the door with a big smile, because everyone here gets a good dose of laughter, its part of the service. Come and meet our family of staff & Trainers. Laureen Hawkins, Personal Trainer & Owner John, Personal Trainer & Lisa, staff. ClubFitnessCR.com If protein can be described as the building material, carbohydrates are the workmen that put everything together. A shake is better than food because whole foods takes a lot longer to digest. Though some people think that the more protein you take in the more muscle you’ll gain, protein is just like any other type of calorie. If you eat too much of it, your body will store it as fat.

Reflex Talk… Have you ever stabbed your toe in a hard object? Does it not seem to “handicap” you at least temporarily seemingly way out of proportion to the force applied? This is actually true—and the reason for this is that in each our feet, there are more than 7000 nerve ending receptors. The ancient healing form we today call Reflexology is originated from this profound fact. Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands, and ears which corresponds to every part, gland, and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes, reflexology may aid in relieving tension, improve circulation and help promote the natural function of the related areas of the body.

The two main focuses of most ref lexology treatments are usually the nerve- and endocrine (hormone) systems. By working the central and peripheral nerve systems and various glands your reflexologist soon puts you in a “parasympathetic” state—this is where the body can focus on restore and repair in stead of “fight or flight”. Some people think they are too ticklish for anyone to touch their feet—but many have found that that initial ticklish feeling soon gives way for a great state of sleepy relaxation! Ref lexologists affiliated and trained by R.A.C—Reflexology Association of Canada is your best bet to enjoy a quality reflexology treatment. So why not seek that natural balance first before going straight to the pillbox?! -Christina Froese
