BODY TALK ‘13 MARCH 18th-22nd

CAPOEIRA

MEETS FLAMENCO

SPRING BREAK DANCE WORKSHOP

March 18th to 22nd:

March 23rd:

For Teens: 1-4pm

Performance at the Port Theatre

For Families all ages: 6-830pm Info and Registration: $25/person for the week www.crimsoncoast.org Workshops @ VIBE Studio 250.716.3230 Dance has always reflected the beliefs, needs and traditions of the culture out of which it springs, and is a powerful form of non-verbal storytelling that gets passed down through generations. Nanaimo and area residents of all ages and abilities will have the chance to learn the movements - and the meaning - of Flamenco and Capoeira dance during a special series of workshops being held over March break. “Body Talk Project 2013” is a series of dance/ movement workshops being hosted March 18 – 22 by teen members of the Crimson Coast Dance Society. The “Body Talk Cru”, as they are known, is a young adult leadership group mentored by professionals in the areas of dance, event planning, administration and peer leadership. They are producing a workshop during March break by Professor Caju of the Victoria Capoeira School and Veronica Stewart of Vancouver’s Flamenco Rosario Dance Company. Stewart and Caju will teach participants the basic moves of, respectively, Flamenco - a fiery traditional Spanish dance, and Capoeira - a Brasilian martial arts which was taught amongst slaves as a dance form to hide the practice from the masters. After practicing and perfecting aspects of these two stunning Latin dance forms, workshop participants will fuse together elements of each to create a contemporary style. The week of daily afternoon and evening sessions (1 – 4 pm for teens; 6 – 8:30 pm for everyone from preschool to senior) will culminate in an opening performance at the Port Theatre March 23 at 7:30 pm before Flamenco Rosario hits the stage.

Body Talk Project

As Holly Bright, artistic director and founder of Crimson Coast Dance Society, acknowledges, the workshops provide an opportunity to spend “a week in the life” of a professional dancer with classes and rehearsals followed by a performance. Andrew Etando, a member of Crimson Coast Dance Society’s Body Talk Cru, speaks highly of the program. “Being a part of Body Talk is amazing because it’s fun and interesting. You learn really cool things, and you get to know a lot of new people.” Bright adds another perspective. “It gives our youth a voice….by empowering them through professional mentorships, to plan, organize, implement and enjoy a dance arts program and show”, she says. “I am creating an opportunity for them to take over my job ... and to recognize the value of the arts at the many levels that it impacts society and individuals.” To keep these workshops affordable for the community the entire week costs only $25. And there is reassurance for the reluctant: participating in the public performance is completely optional. The workshops take place at Vibe Studios in Nanaimo. To register or get more information, call Crimson Coast at 250.716.3230 or email:dance@crimsoncoast.org For tickets to the March 23 showcase of exciting Flamenco, Capoeira and fusion dance styles at the Port Theatre, call 250.754.8550

JOKE.

A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience would be different each week, so the magician allowed himself to do the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: The captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood he started shouting in the middle of the show: “Look, it’s not the same hat” “Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table” “Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything; it was, after all, the captain’s parrot. One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean with the parrot, of course. They stared at each other with hate, but did not utter a word. This went on for a day and another and another. After a week the parrot said: “OK, I give up. Where’s the boat?”

WhatsOn

home There is nothing for real comfort

like

staying

at

home

So said Jane Austen, and many would agree with her. Home is where we can, literally and figuratively, ‘kick off our shoes’. It is where we can set aside the physical and behavioural trappings of society and just relax. It offers us a refuge, and a comfort. The most common understanding of ‘home’ is that of a physical dwelling, a place we return to regularly and from which we base our daily activities. Understood as such, it is believed humans have had ‘homes’ (in the form of caves or mud huts) since the late Stone Age. Many of us come to have strong attachments to our homes, holding as they do precious memories as well as precious items. But being ‘home’ can also refer to a certain geographical area, or being surrounded by people with whom we believe we have affinities. It is not uncommon too for some to think of home as a mental or emotional rather than a physical place. The saying “Home is where the heart is” reflects that way of thinking. But if we consider the most common understanding of home – as physical refuge where we live and store personal property – it would be prudent to

also consider the influence that our surroundings can have on our sense of well-being. If a home by definition is a familiar place that brings comfort, then it might be wise to understand what elements of an abode could potentially bring that about. It is of course very individual. Prized items on display. The presence of a family pet. Pictures on the walls. The formation of new memories. Leaving and returning. It can also include the colours we surround ourselves with: certain hues are believed to evoke certain emotional or physiological responses. With this in mind we can carefully choose fabric colours for our furnishings, and paint colours for interior walls and exterior features that together help create the tranquil feeling that lets us know we’re indeed ‘home’. When considering a paint colour for the interior of your home, a good starting place is to choose something that complements the furnishings you already have, the effect you’re going for and the amount of light each room receives. When considering a paint colour for the exterior of your abode, keep in mind the style of your home (heritage or modern) and the colour of surrounding buildings: while expressing your individuality is

rewarding, you may not want to stand out like a sore thumb. Also consider which features of your home you wish to highlight or disguise: the right colour can do either. Creating a home takes work and only you will know when it’s finished. Just remember that when it is indeed done - and there’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to get it done - you get to kick off your shoes.

It won’t be long now before boating season is in full swing in the Harbour City. Taking along man’s best friend on your boating trip could be a great adventure for both you and you dog. For your furry friend boating is like riding in dream convertible with a blast of sun and fresh air from all directions. Nose in the air, ears blowing in the wind and his favorite people; what could be better! Most all dogs have mastered the famous “Doggie Paddle” but it’s always important to stay as safe as possible. Your dog should always wear a life jacket when both in and near the water. That holds true even for breeds of dogs that traditionally love the water and take to swimming quite easily. When taking your dog on water related outings it’s important to keep the following items at hand: A doggy towel. A sweater made out of water-resistant material. A non-spill water bowl and lots of fresh water . A pooper-scooper and trash bags . A life jacket for your dog. Another tip to consider is shade for your furry friend. Even though your dog may have many opportunities to jump into the water, it’s important he has a cool relaxing place for resting. Boat surfaces, such as fiberglass, can get very hot in the sun. Dogs absorb heat through the pads on their feet so be sure to protect them. Your dog will surely be enjoying himself so much that excitement could hide the fact he is

overheated. Now that you have most everything covered pick the perfect day to go have that amazing adventure with your whole family! Always keeping safety first, your dog is bound to have the time of his life. Enjoy your trip!

Nanaimo has a fascinating connection to one of 20th century music’s greatest icons, and a very special upcoming event at the Port Theatre will shed even more light on the City’s relationship to Johnny Cash, “The Man in Black”.

My Fath The Man

March 20th will see the screening of “My Father and The Man In Black” at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre. The film was written, directed and produced by Jonathan Holiff, the son of Johnny’s longtime manager Saul Holiff. Jonathan’s mother and father lived in Nanaimo until 2005 when Saul committed suicide. Jonathan’s mother still calls Nanaimo home, as does the film-maker himself. The film was inspired by the discovery after Saul’s death of audio diaries and phone calls he had with Cash during the 60s and 70s, along with a large amount of memorabilia including lobby cards, concert programs and magazines, publicity stills and movie and concert posters. The cache was found in a Nanaimo locker, and the close examination and documentation of its contents led to the creation of a film described by Philip Brown of the Toronto Star as “a painfully honest twin portrait of manager and artist”. “You can feel all the tension, and the heartbreak, rumbling beneath every frame” adds Katherine Monk of the Vancouver Province. The Hollywood Reporter calls it “a privileged perspective on crucial moments in Johnny Cash’s career”.

The early-spring screening at The Port marks the first time a feature film has been projected at the Port Theatre, the first time this film has been shown outside the film festival circuit, and the first time the director will be available post-screening for a 40-minute question and answer session. “My father’s gold records and Johnny Cash memorabilia will be on display for the first time,” says Holiff. “To my knowledge, nothing like this has ever been done before in Nanaimo”. Kicking off the feature event on the 20th will be a 20-minute opening set by Canada’s top Johnny Cash cover band, Big River. Of particular interest to local audiences will be the reference in the film to Nanaimo. The sharp-eyed in attendance may also catch glimpses of familiar landmarks: much of the movie footage was generated from shoots on location in Nanaimo and around Vancouver Island. “My Father and The Man In Black” has generated a lot of buzz on the film festival circuit. It was declared WINNER “Best Feature Documentary” at EDINDOCS, WINNER “Best Music Film” at RADAR Hamburg International Film Festival, TOP 10 Audience Favorite at Vancouver International Film Festival and TOP 10 Audience Favorite at Calgary International Film Festival. See you at the screening!

Move over Group of Seven. Nanaimo’s “Group of Ten” now numbers twenty-five and they’re celebrating their 30th anniversary! Art 10 Gallery - situated in Nanaimo North Town Centre – showcases the work of a long-lived cooperative art group that first formed in May 1983. Originally boasting a membership of 10 painters - hence the name “Art 10” – the collective now numbers twenty-five and includes potters, jewellers, glass designers and oil, acrylic and watercolour painters. The cooperative was the brainchild years ago of newly transplanted Winnipeg artist Doris Paterson, who had belonged to a similar group back home. She believed the artists of the Nanaimo area needed a permanent place to showcase their work. And while the Gallery has had a number of different homes during the past 30 years - the first was Harbour Park Mall (now Port Place Shopping Centre) – the cooperative itself has not only survived, but thrived. Member Marilyn Ridsdale believes she knows why. “The charm of the Gallery is that we offer truly unique pieces by local artists,” she says. “And because all members take shifts in the Gallery, a customer can speak directly to the artist if they wish some background information on their purchase of a ‘one of a kind’ piece of art”. Supporting a gallery of local artists helps keep the money circulating close to home, adds Ridsdale, which in turn encourages the cultural health of the community since many of the Art 10 members also teach art classes. Ridsdale acknowledges however that the everchanging function of art in people’s lives have at times brought challenges to the Gallery.

“It used to be people would have an emotional connection to a piece or image, and it would get passed down through the family”, she says. “Nowadays, there is a tendency to see art as very decorative. Many people want inexpensive reproductions that match their couch. This can make it a bit tough to sell originals”. But Ridsdale believes the pendulum might be swinging back the other way. And the Gallery is ready, with its broad selection of mediums and styles. “It’s a little bit of everything in here,” she laughs. “You can find watercolours beside brilliant acrylics. And because we change the walls every month, you’ll almost always see new works when you come in. As an artist this can encourage you to get at it!” Ridsdale believes one of the reasons the Gallery works so well in its current location is the reprieve it offers from the hustle and bustle of the mall. “It is a place where people can come to look and be moved,” she says. When the Gallery celebrates its 30th Anniversary on May 25th, she hopes many people will come in and do just that.

Whats n Wheels

Just as spring finds many of us needing a physical ‘tune up’ after the inactivity caused by winter weather, it also finds many of our cars in the same predicament. Extended warm up times and slower commutes due to bad weather and/or poor road conditions take their toll on vehicles. When exhaust systems don’t heat up, moisture can rust them from the inside out. Rutted roads can pound suspensions, and brake calipers can get corroded slides which cause brakes to drag and tires to wear. These problem areas should be checked after a season of winter driving, but there’s much more that could be done to keep your car running its best. With “Spring Tune-Up Special” signs popping up at automotive shops as predictably as the first flowers of the season, car owners may want to give some thought to maintenance before hitting the road. The word “Tune-up” can mean different things to different people, from changing sparkplugs and checking filters to having your charging system analyzed. The latter kind of tune-up costs much more, but the benefits – like better fuel efficiency or an extended life for your vehicle – can be higher, too. Whatever kind of tune-up you opt for, be sure you know exactly what the repair shop will do before they look under the hood.

Here are a few things to consider including in your vehicle’s spring tune-up. Winter driving with its cold engine temperatures and rich fuel mixtures can foul sparkplugs. Even one sparkplug firing intermittently will decrease fuel economy dramatically Oxygen sensors can become fouled by rich mixtures, causing their performance to slowly degrade and fuel economy to decrease. New sensors can improve fuel economy quite dramatically, so changing a sensor with high mileage on it makes good sense. Exhaust system inspections aren’t often thought of as a tune-up procedure, but a missed exhaust leak will cause poor fuel economy Road salt and extra winter moisture can cause corrosion in electrical system grounds; re-tightening body and engine grounds can prevent many ‘driveability’ problems

27

Extended idling times in winter can cause sticking injector problems that lead to decreased fuel economy. Consider adding an injector cleaning to your car’s tune-up: it can improve both economy and ‘driveability’

Before the warm weather hits have your cooling system checked for leaks and bad connections, and have the condition of your belts, hoses, and coolant mix assessed. A cooling system failure could strand you on a beautiful spring or summer day Tune-ups cost money, but at the price of fuel today, even a slight improvement in the way your car runs will reap potentially large rewards in a short period of time.
