“They made it possible for me to Succeed” When I think back to my last years of high school, it was very carefree. I needed someone to say to me, “Hey! You have to think about your future! What are you going to do for the rest of your life?” I was lost in a party world, but going back to college helped me to grow as a person, helped me set boundaries and know where I wanted to go. Before the end of high school, I ended up getting married and moving to another country, drifting in and out of meaningless jobs not knowing which direction I wanted to go. Having a child changed my life in ways I never imagined possible. I basically put any thoughts of a career on hold as I put all my energies towards this child.
Ana McManus – Graduate Community Support Worker
One day I was driving on Bowen Road and saw a sign for Discovery College. I signed up for the Community Support Worker Program and started the course not knowing what to do or expect. You see a lot of stuff that you are not aware even existed. I have to admit it was intimidating coming back to school at this point in my life. I have a partner and I have kids and bills! But there comes a time when you have to put yourself and your happiness first. I wanted a career so I can give my daughter a better life. At first, it was hard to accommodate day care and school, but they made it possible for me to succeed. At Discovery I grew not only personally, but spiritually. The teachers I had were wonderful. The small class certainly helps a lot because it made it possible for me to have a close connection to the teachers and staff. I can proudly say that. going to Discovery was one of the greatest choices I have made in my life. Now I not only have a job, but a career which I am proud of. I get to help people, to empower them to participate and engage in the community. Thank you Discovery College team! Special thanks to Krista, Ray, and to the angel Diane Lloyd.

health Breath Awareness and Wellness Connection Our physical and mental well -being depends on great many factors and one of the most important elements is breath awareness. Internal body toxins consist of waste products created by normal metabolic processes within the body. Everyday physiological processes such as energy production and digestion create waste products. These waste products make up patterns of internal toxins, and if these waste products are not discarded they inhibit the function of our internal organs and create disharmony in the body and mind. The important factor to remember is that we don’t just rid our bodies of toxins through the bowls and kidneys; we also expel them through breath! Breathing allows for maximum inter-change of oxygen and carbon dioxide, maintaining the correct balance of both. Deep breathing also aids to induce a relaxation response in the body as opposed to the stress response that is brought about by shallow chest breathing - the type of breathing we have become accustomed to.
Shallow chest breathing can actually induce the fight or flight response in the body because this type of breathing signals the brain that a stressful situation is imminent and triggers secretion of large amounts of stress hormones in the adrenal glands. Shallow breathing can also disrupt the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide, which makes us feel a need for more air and aggravates anxiety and stress symptoms. Deep breathing, on the contrary, helps to reduce stress and creates a sense of inner calm. We need to make it a habit to take few moments every day to do deep breathing and breath awareness exercises - our physical and mental well-being is bound to improve as we engage in regular deep breathing. We are proud to say that ‘treasure chest’ grows every year. The Foundation’s history is a story of dedication and vision starting over 20 years ago by a handful of very committed citizens. A Big Impact Each spring the Foundation accepts applications for grants from area nonprofits. They seek to fund projects and programs that are innovative, diverse and have a large impact on the community. This year, the Foundation will grant up to $35,000 to the non-profits in our area. To date, the Community Foundation has given out over $125,000 back to our community. Who gives to the Foundation? Money donated is often given by families or organizations who have a desire to build a more sustainable community. The Foundation receives one time donations as well as regular contributions. that, is the philosophy of the 40 Knots winery team and that is why everything is done by hand, including the harvest, and why they respectfully select only the finest fruit with which they create their Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and several signature blends, including their new Spindrift Brut. Passionate about producing 100% Vancouver Island wine and going into their 4th vintage, it is becoming evident that the Comox Valley is not just a good place to grow grapes, but that we are capable of growing and producing great wines. This year they are excited to open the Tasting Room and Wine Shop to the public on April 5th for their first full season and they will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 12-5 pm. “ We are so excited to offer our customers the opportunity to join us for the launch our first Case Lot Weekend! “ says Marnie Martin , director of Sales and Events “The event will be happening May 3rd, 4th, and 5th from 12 -5 pm and we will be implementing a 10% discount for our customers for purchases of 12 or more bottles of wine.” The winery is also open for picnics, special events, weddings and tours and starting in May, they will be open from Wednesday to Sunday from 12-5 pm. Fighting Cystic Fibrosis Thrifty Foods stores in Campbell River and the Comox Valley will be collecting donations at their tills during May to support cystic fibrosis (CF) research and programs. I have come to know some of the young people in our community who have CF like Sylvana Denroche, Kim Wood and Mike Hamilton,” said Ackinclose. “I’m inspired by their courage and determination to fight the disease – I wanted to help make a difference in their lives.” Rutledge added, “Raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis, is important to me, we have seen improvement in care for people with CF thanks to some of the research and clinical care happening right here in B.C.”
Managers Bill Rutledge (Campbell River) Andy Carter (Courtenay) and Jeff Ackinclose (Comox) have joined together in supporting the fight against CF.

V of the month A strong young man at the construction site was bragging that he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of Morris, one of the older workmen. After several minutes, Morris had enough. “Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is?” he said. “I will bet a week’s wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that building that you won’t be able to wheel back.” “You’re on, old man,” the braggart replied. “It’s a bet! Let’s see what you’ve got.” Morris reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles, then, nodding to the young man, he said, “All right. Get in.”
