It was BIG ..... the scale went around and around and finally stopped at 62lb. Tammy won the 1983 World Salmon Fishing Championship. Tammy won a trip to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii a memory never to be forgotten. 13 days later, Dawn Peterson and Steve Bencze caught a 61 pounder in Frenchmans Pool. This was the last 60 pounder caught in the Tyee Club in B.C. History. Read the full story on page 18 Aug 26, 1983 Steve & Dawn 61 lb.

Our Chinook stocks have gone down in the Campbell River
It is our goal to try and bring back more 5+ year old Chinook salmon that we once had in this famous River that our City is named after. Starting August 9th 2013 at the Campbell River Salmon Festival, Tammy, Ken, Dawn and Steve will be promoting a Shared Waters ‘Big Fish” vision for giving back to our watershed. This date was chosen as the 30th Year anniversary of the last 60+ pounder Tyees caught in the Tyee Club of B.C.. We propose, as many of us believe, to use big female Chinooks and matching them with big males (like in nature) from the Quinsam River. The eggs would be held in the Quinsam Hatchery to delay their hatch, and then the incubator boxes would be put into the Campbell River early January. The result..... 5+ year old returning Chinooks, 33 pounds and lager. With xt to the our community’s ‘common sense’ -Brow n ne ig a H ry a n. It’s a 62 pound Tyee !! It was early morning and bright stars lit in the sky. Little did we know it would be a day in history. It was August 13th 1983. Barry, Tammy and I made our way in our rowboat towards the famous Tyee Pool, just south of where the Campbell River, enters the ocean. I was so fortunate to have the use of a first-production Murphy rowboat that River Sportsman owned. We were in it for its one true purpose in life—to search for the elusive Tyee; a Chinook salmon over 30 pounds… We were geared to fish under the exacting regulations of the annual Tyee Club of B.C tournament which was set in 1924, and the ‘old school’ tradition has continued. The morning was still dark when we arrived at my favorite spot, passed down by veteran mentor rowers…the South Corner. I had not slept very well the night before in the anticipation as the tide was near perfect, fish should be taken. Then, all of a sudden, I had this feeling. It was inexplicable and I can’t say exactly how it came upon me that morning, but I just looked at Barry and said, “I want to go to Frenchman’s Pool”. Frenchman’s ‘is the name of that body of water just north of where the Campbell River spills into Discovery Passage. After contemplating whether I might have a good hunch or I was completely mad, Barry relented and off we went. From the start, the 4.5 horse power Mercury motor strained against the flood tide. The shallows of the estuary lurked dangerously close below as we headed over it and through the river mouth to the north end of Painter’s Lodge. Barry shut down the motor, tilted it out of the water and took his seat beside Tammy. I handed them the rods, then began rowing and the lines were let out. The guide rows the boat looking at the rods, while trolling an artificial lure with one single barbless hook, maximum 20lb line and no more than 6 ounces of weight. The dark receded just enough so we could see the rod tips. Two Lucky Louie shovelnose plugs did their magic behind a Gibbs four ounce slip weight. We were instantly into beautiful water going against the tide as we headed towards the Dolphins Resort. Both plugs were beating perfectly, the lines hung deep. We had gone from frantic search to the peaceful lull of the row.
Heading north it was so quite the sound of the oars dipping in and out of the water seemed loud. There were only a few other rowboats in the pool. The sky was clear the sun had yet to come up as we worked our way directly in front of the Dolphins Resort, just inside a riptide that had slowed down at the end of the tide. Barry’s plug got weed on it and stopped beating. He reeled it in to clean it. This was the moment Tammy was waiting for…only one plug in the water! Slowly I turned the rowboat and rowed its bow into the faster riptide. It pushed us backwards, yet the plug worked incredibly well, only 44’ from Tammy. It didn’t lose a beat, but actually seemed to intensify its action as it dug deeper, and slid slowly beneath the boat.....POW!!! Tammy’s 7 ½ - foot fiberglass rod slammed down on the wood gunnel. She swung instantly, hitting it quick and hard. The fish was on, running under the rowboat and heading to April Point across the Passage. As I pulled on the oars to straighten out the boat, I yelled…FISH ON!! The 4 ½” Hardy Longstone single-action reel screamed zzzzzzzz…..zzzzzzzzzzzz as 150 to 200 yards of 20 pound maxima line peeled off it in seconds. I thought for sure it would show itself as it ran just under the surface. But it didn’t. Then it started to sound and went deep, there telegraphing its anger with big scary head shakes, that magnified on the rod. Barry and I coached Tammy, “keep your rod up, let it run; let it run, keep pressure on the rod, reel, reel, reel”. It was acting like a big fish, and the tide slowly took us towards the river mouth. Tammy played the fish like a pro, it was a real battle. As the fish continued to take some great runs Tammy, was using her palm of her hand as the drag for the Hardy reel, she played it calmly, even though her palm was burning, and her arms now weak. ... “REEL, REEL”, as I pulled on the oars to help her it made some unreal moves towards us to try and free itself. After a 40-minute fight, the most amazing thing happened, we started to drift by the deeper channel going into the river mouth. Then finally, it showed itself, and I couldn’t believe it, this fish was BIG, I’de seen big fish before, but this was BIG !! But how big? I did not tell Tammy how big I thought it might be. I didn’t want to jinx it.. Finally the Tyee lay on its side 60 yards away, totally exhausted, right then I was convinced, it was over 50 pounds. I then started backing up the rowboat with my oars, and kept telling Tammy that the fish is going to take another run. I backed up, backed up, and backed up, then netted it. The fish never moved

We all turned to each other and then the hooting, hollering, hugging, and shaking of hands started. Now, Barry and I were convinced, this big fish was over 55 pounds. We headed for the Tyee Club Clubhouse, to weigh in. Passing some of the rowboats fishing the Tyee Pool, we shared our excitement. As we pulled our boat up on the beach, all eyes were on us, Barry and I took Tammy’s fish out of the boat and carried it to the official scale, the celebrations had already started, and the moment we were all waiting for. The scale went around and around, then stopped at two…62 pounds!!!!!! Next, to get this ‘big fish’ to River Sportsman, and have it officially weighed in for the 1983 Diawa World Salmon Fishing Championship. Tammy had won the title, with a trip for two to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii…”a memory never to be forgotten”
With the historical Tyee Club of British Columbia, this local gal was also so fortunate to take home; The Tyee Man Trophy (largest tyee of the season), The Lillian J. Sparrow Trophy (to the female angler who registers the largest tyee of the season), and The Gavin Chisholm Trophy (the angler who catches the largest tyee during the season on a single action reel). Ken was so honoured to accept The W.C. Mainwaring Trophy (for the guide whose angler registers the largest tyee during the season). This ‘big fish’ proved to be the first registered 60-pounder caught by a lady in the club since 1960. Ironically 13 days later Dawn (Peterson) Bencze, rowed by Steve Bencze caught a 61 pounder in Frenchman’s Pool. Now, these two local ladies and two local guides have registered the last 60 pounders in the Tyee Club of B.C. History. Written by Ken E. Enns, July 22nd 2013 edited by Cathy Kaardal

Exercise as part of your stress and pain management routine
When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins, the chemicals that interact with the receptors in the brain that diminish the perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger positive feelings in the body that are often accompanied by an energizing outlook on life. Regular exercise has been proven to: reduce stress and anxiety, boost self-esteem, and improve sleep. But even with this awareness, maintaining a regular exercise routine can be a challenge.
Summer Starter
Here are a couple of things that can help you get there; First, realize that ‘trying’ is not ‘doing’! Don’t start out by telling yourself that you will try to exercise two or three times per week. Instead DO it every day. Spend only 15 or 20 minutes a day if necessary. This way it will become a healthy habit; break the habit of ‘not doing’ and replace it with ‘doing’. Second, no excuses. If you don’t allow for excuses (e.g. too busy, too tired) they won’t have the power to hold you back. Unless there is a valid reason (not an excuse) DECIDE to exercise. Make that decision every day - one day at the time - and you will get there!

V of the month
I was at a party and the host was getting worried because there were too many people and not enough refreshments. She was sure that not all of these people had been invited but didn’t know how to tell which ones were the crashers. Then her husband got an idea.... He turned to the crowd of guests and said, “Will those who are from the bride’s side of the family stand up please?” About twenty people stood. Then he asked, “Will those who are from the groom’s side of the family stand up as well?” About twenty five people stood up. Then he smiled and said, “Will all those who stood please leave, this is a birthday party.”
