health Reflexology for Wellness The underlying theory behind reflexology is that there are reflex areas on the feet that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body. We have over 7000 nerve endings in each foot! Messages from the feet reaching groups of nerve cell bodies, connect up with the messages going to muscles (electrical impulse theory), so that working the feet has direct action on bodily organs. Reflexology is a tremendously relaxing form of bodywork that focuses primarily on the feet: A calming and holistic treatment which may help to improve circulation, encourages overall wellness, and heightens body awareness. As the body is be-
ginning to relax during a session, tension is relieved and the circulation of blood and lymph may be restored to its natural flow. Reflexology can help you to re-balance your body and mind to meet the demands of daily life stress. Reflexology should never hurt! If you are experiencing any kind of discomfort during a session, please advise your reflexologist right away so that pressure can immediately be adjust to your comfort level. It’s that time of year again! On Saturday May 31, 2014 the 9th Annual Campbell River Community Foundation ‘Swing for Charity’ golf tournament takes place at Storey Creek Golf Course. Once again, participants will enjoy 18 holes of golf, then head to the Campbell River Community Centre for a delicious four course plated dinner catered by Quay West. The Community Foundation’s vision is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Campbell River by offering grants that meet the wide variety of projects and programs that build our Campbell River. Want to Play? Register at www.swingforcharity.ca. Proudly, all proceeds raised from the ‘Swing for Charity’ golf tournament will be added to our community “treasure chest” which is currently at over $1.2 million and growing! The Campbell River Community Foundation 9th Annual golf tournament is now accepting golfer registrations and ticket purchases for dinner guests. This tournament has sold out in the past so don’t delay. Gold Tickets are all inclusive at $250 per golfer. Lots of great surprise holes to keep you entertained, fed and delighted. Gourmet four course meal with wine at your table at the CR Community Centre following your day of laughter and fun on the golf course. Register online at www.swing for charity.ca or contact Amanda at info@swingforcharity.ca or 250-202-7500. Dinner tickets are $100 per person or purchase a table of eight for $800. We are proud to have all proceeds from the tournament added to our community ‘treasure chest”. Many thanks to the community for their fantastic support.
Campbell River Community Foundation The Foundation’s goal is to continue to build a permanent fund, the interest of which is used to give grants to organizations who make Campbell River and area a better place for all residents. This year, the permanent fund stands at $1.5 million, so more interest money for grants is available. In 2014 the following projects were awarded grants: CR & District Assn. of Community Living: $4200 will be spent expanding space and purchasing materials to increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. CR Museum: $4000 for a new exhibit on the history of our watershed. CR Art Gallery: $3500 to make studio improvements for the many art classes held year-round. 19th Annual
Rod Brind’Amour Cystic Fibrosis Golf Classic 19th Annual Rod Brind’Amour Cystic Fibrosis Golf Classic, Dinner and Auction.
June 14th at Storey Creek Golf Course In it’s 19th year, the Rod Brind’Amour Golf Classic is the biggest Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser of the year. Funds are raised from sponsors and the auction. This year’s amazing platinum sponsors include Thrifty Foods, Steve Marshall Ford, RBC Dominion, Seymour Pacific, The Kinsman, Safety Net Security, Ed Rosse Plumbing and Heating, and the Courier Islander. One of the major event sponsors, Thrifty Foods has been a long time supporter of the Rod Brind’Amour Classic. Thrifty Foods founder Alex Campbell has donated to the cause for over 20 years, and assisted in the creation of the original Golf Classic! Alex has been a major contributor to the Golf Classic dinner that follows the game, and each year is instrumental in collecting donations from three Thrifty Foods stores, Comox, Courtenay and Campbell River. The popular Storey Creek Golf Course provide a magnificent venue, donating golf and equipment for tournament prizes. Storey Creek’s Manager, Kyle Stout, will tee off #17 hole with Rod Brind’Amour, and NHL players Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers, and Chad LaRose of the Carolina Hurricanes. Over the years, local businesses and the Campbell River community have donated generously and shown unceasing support for the Cystic Fibrosis cause – last year’s Golf Classic raised $84,000! The Classic Golf Dinner is catered by Quay West Restaurant at Sportsplex, and everyone is invited to attend. A great evening will be had, and there will be plenty of chances to meet with NHL players and Rod Brind’Amour. To attend the Golf Dinner, tickets are available for $45 each. To purchase or donate, please contact Bev 250-287-8600. To make a donation to Cystic Fibrosis www.cysticfibrosis.ca.

Bare Land Strata – Your happy middle ground? Maybe you’re considering your retirement home. Or maybe a change to a more community oriented lifestyle. Or possibly wanting a newer home, but can’t afford a single family dwelling. But, you’re also turned off of “strata” because of the high monthly fees and all of the strict rules and regulations. If this is you, then “Bare Land Strata” may be a perfect option for you. With Bare Land Strata, you own your home, and you own the land that your home sits on. However, you will likely be in a private complex, or possibly a gated community. So the roadway through, and possibly some common areas within the complex are the only shared (or strata) areas. Because the strata is not required to maintain your home or your yard, the fees for the road maintenance,
common area maintenance, street lights, insurance, etc. can be substantially lower; in some cases, starting as low as $40/month. You and your Strata Council still may choose to have additional services added (such as landscaping, security, etc), and adjust the monthly strata fees accordingly. And although there are often still strata rules in place, they are typically less restrictive than full strata bylaws. Some examples of Bare Land Strata complexes in the Campbell River area are NVH’s Varsity Landing, Willow Green patio homes and their newest Patio Home complex, Cormorant Place. For more information on Bare Land Strata, Cormorant Place Patio Homes, or any other Real Estate questions, please call or text Don Corder anytime (250) 202-1407.

Secrets Your Pet Won’t Tell You Italian researchers found that dogs wag their tails slightly to the right when they see something they like and to the left when they’re confronted with something they want to back away from . Your favorite cat game to play with me involves a laser pointer. The result: I get really frustrated because I can’t catch it, and I live for the hunt. So if you’re going to use a pointer, please sub in an actual toy at the end so I have something to catch and kill. It makes the game worth it. You’re giving me too much food. How can you tell? I don’t seem motivated by food treats when you’re trying to train me. Cut back, and I’ll start to pay attention. To make dogs like me look fluffy, shake a little cornstarch into the base of the fur and then brush. It will absorb oil and grease and detangle matted fur.

After 35 years of marriage, a married couple came for counselling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate tirade listing every problem they’d ever over the years: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire list of un-met needs she had endured. After allowing this for a length of time, the therapist stood, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he kissed her passionately as her husband watched with a raised eyebrow. Silently the woman sat down. The therapist turned to the husband and said, “This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you see to it?” “Well,” he said, “I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I go fishing.”
