food,” she said. Collectively the Ideal Protein Clinic at Parksville Pharmasave has seen more than 14,000 pounds lost since it opened. Spratt started the program four and a half years ago and lost 40 pounds. Her success story is just one of the many that have resulted from the program and while there have been some amazing body transformations Spratt said more importantly it has empowered people to live healthier. “Making better choices are things that all of us need to practice. For most of us we get really taxed with how busy we are and we don’t make time for the things that are important when it comes to our health.” Losing weight and shaping your body is about understanding what you eat and how it affects your health. Spratt said moving your body is one component but what you put into your body by eating smarter is the key to success. As a coach Spratt teaches clients how body fat is burned, the relationship between insulin and weight gain, foods best for weight management, and how the combinations of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins work in the body.

“You have to run the equivalent of a marathon to lose one pound of fat. During the weight loss part of the program you don’t have enough calories. You can’t build muscle and burn fat at the same time. We are focussing on burning fat. You are in nutritional ketosis. It is a safe and efficient way to burn fat. You have to work the program as directed and your body will tap into body fat reserves. It takes about five days to get there,” she acknowledged. Spratt agreed it takes time and patience and for some kicking a sugar addiction. “Sugar is a problem and it is one of the greatest addictions out there. I believe it is the root of all evil when it comes to health. You have to let go of things that cause trouble. dropping in,” she advised. When people say they can’t dance, she tells them her professional background wasn’t in the world of dance. It was in technology and corporate software but she stepped out of her comfort zone and now cardio dancing is her passion. “I got into dance fitness in 2007. I started taking classes because I was in the sedentary world of tech seven days a week working 12 hour days. I had a bit of a health upset and needed to resolve a few health issues. The first thing I did was buy an elliptical and change my eating habits. After a while, I decided to take the scariest class I could find, which was a cardio dance class. I ended up taking Rhythm and Motion in San Francisco, and immediately loved the format. Over the years I tried all of the other dance formats,” she explained. Eventually she ended up as an instructor in 2015 but she admitted she didn’t dazzle on the dance floor right away. “When I started at dance fitness I had no clue what I was doing. I had two left feet and thought what have I got myself into. I

ploughed through it. I thought I am going to keep doing this and keep smiling and that is all you need,” she assured. For those who think they are too old, deHaan said that shouldn’t be a deterrent to trying a class. “There are all ages in the classes. My mom comes and she is 70.” With an all-levels class you work at the pace and intensity that you want to work at. She said here are different options if you want to challenge yourself or take it down a notch. “There are a lot of people who do low impact and don’t jump. Its fairly low impact if you are worried about your knees.” For the complete schedule of 2019 classes visit: www.cardiodanceclub.com. MORE INFORMATION

Joke of the Month A woman meant to call a record store, but dialed the wrong number and got a private home instead. “Do you have ‘Eyes of Blue’ and ‘A Love Supreme?’” she asked. “Well, no,” answered the puzzled homeowner. “But I have a wife and eleven children.” “Is that a record?” the caller inquired, puzzled in her turn. “I don’t think so,” replied the man, “but it’s as close as I want to get.”
