COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR A WALK-A-THON TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR HUNGRY, HOMELESS & HURTING PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY.
T
he Oceanside/ Parksville Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS) is once again hosting a family-friendly national walk-a-thon to help raise funds for charities that serve hungry, homeless and hurting people in our community. The 5th annual Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) takes place Saturday, February 23 in Parksville as well as in136 other communities across Canada. This year the goal of the Oceanside/Parksville ICCS is $40,000. ICCS has been providing service in the Oceanside area since 2003 when Hirst House opened. In 2014 federal funding assisted with hiring an outreach worker and provided five rent subsidies. Unfortunately that funding did not continue so money raised through CNOY enables the society to continue the
supports necessary to maintain its programs that assist the most vulnerable people in Oceanside. In 2018 more than 100 participants raised about $29,000 for the cause. One of the walkers last year was Julie Lawrence, the ICCS Programs Manager in Oceanside. She manages the crisis stabilization housing Hirst House, as well as the Parksville weather shelter and Oceanside Outreach and said the Oceanside region has close to 100 people who are struggling alone and face multiple barriers. Lawrence said she first joined the walk in Parksville in 2016 to help support people who are at risk of homelessness and has been passionate about promoting it ever since. “I walk to support the most vulnerable people in our community. These are people, many with mental and physical

Some struggle with past addiction issues. I walk because it could happen to anyone of us,” she acknowledged. Lawrence now helps with directing the annual event and said although it provides those who take part in it a glimpse of what some of the challenges facing the homelessness are – particularly during a cold winter night, it truly is a heart warming gathering. The walk will begin at 5:15 p.m. February 23 and starts and ends at Knox United Church at 345 Pym St. Route options include a 2 km, 5 km or 10 km walk and rest stops will be available on all routes which
will be well signed. Between 6 and 8 p.m. a warm, light meal will be served to all walkers and volunteers. Registration is free for children under 10 years of age. Youth aged 11-17 must fundraise a minimum of $75 or pay registration fee. The fee for adults 18 and over is a minimum of $150.

KSS
EXTRAVAGANZA
T
he stage and the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre will be filled with some seasoned as well as some up and coming musicians on Friday, February 8 for a concert that is raising funds for students in the Kwalikum Senior Secondary (KSS) jazz program. The KSS Fine Arts Society is presenting an exciting evening of entertainment featuring multi-Junoaward-winning saxophonist Phil Dwyer. A trio of accomplished musicians featuring Dwyer on sax, Ken Lister on bass and Hans Verhoeven on drums will be the headliner for the evening that also includes a dinner, silent auction and wall of wine. A multi-instrumentalist and composer/arranger, Dwyer has an extensive resume and his musical accomplishments have garnered him some impressive accolades. In 2013 Dwyer was appointed as a Member of the Order Of Canada. He was recognized for his contributions to jazz as a performer, composer and producer and for increasing access to music education in his community. Although Dwyer spends most of his time as a lawyer these days he said he always finds time to perform and when he met with the parent of a KSS jazz student recently he recalled how the KSS Jazz Extravaganza was established. “It was about 10 years ago. At that point my son was at KSS,” he said. His wife Teresa and other parents were part of the steering committee that created the Jazz Extravaganza fundraiser which was held at the Civic Centre. “Our kids graduated and over the years it morphed into something at the high school. This year a new committee and decided it would be nice to bring it back to the Civic Centre to its origins,” he explained. Dwyer who grew up in Qualicum Beach always wanted to be a great musician and he was the Valedictorian of the first graduating class at KSS in 1983. He gives credit to the excellent music programs at
“FOR THE SIZE OF THE SCHOOL AND LOCATION, KSS IS STILL PRODUCING SOME OF THE TOP MUSICIANS IN THE COUNTRY. ” KSS for nurturing his musical education. He said the school continues to inspire and create stellar musicians. There will be a number of student groups performing throughout the evening and Dwyer assured they will wow the guests. He is especially impressed with three young musicians who he has invited to join him on stage in the second set. “They are just exceptional. Quite frankly if they were not high school students in Qualicum Beach they could work professionally in any city in North America,” he emphasized. Before the students take to the stage, the Phil Dwyer Trio will be performing popular music from the golden era of the movies primarily from the 50’s and 60’s. Guests can look forward to the music of composer Henry Mancini’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Johnny Mandel’s soundtracks from the movie Mash just to name a few. Doors open at 5:30 and dinner is at 6:30. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased at KSS, Alcove in Qualicum Beach or call Aimee at 250-951-2210. MORE INFORMATION

PARKSVILLE GEM & MINERAL SHOW WITH 30 VENDORS THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF SPECIMENS TO BEHOLD
A
ttention all rockhounds, the Parksville Gem and Mineral Show is returning the Parksville Community Conference Centre (PCCC) February 9 and 10 and with 30 vendors there will be plenty of specimens to behold. Hobbyists and rock collectors alike can expect a wide variety of collectors and dealers at the PCCC, some with exquisite displays of rocks, gems, crystals and jewellery. Ask anyone who collects rocks and they will tell you there are plenty of reasons for doing so including; getting some exercise while exploring our ecosystem, for spiritual connections or just for the science of geology. Some rocks are rare, some have cools shapes and colours while others are pretty and are perfect for making jewellery. Julia Mewhort of Qualicum Beach is one of the organizers of the show and she said people who collect rocks are often called rockhounds and she admitted to being one of them. “It is about getting out in nature looking for gems. A lot of people are interested in rocks these days because of their energy properties,” she explained. Mewhort said there will be something for everyone at the show and some specimens that have been preserved in mother earth are sure to ignite the
passions of budding palaeontologists. “Sharon Hubbard is doing a fossil display. She found a fossil that is now in the Victoria Museum.” Hubbard’s reptile jaw came from the Pterosaurs which is one of the earliest vertebrates known to have evolved powered flight. She found the skeleton of the extinct flying dinosaur while fossil hunting on Hornby Island. Mewhort said one of the popular booths at the show they hosted in 2018 was from Forest Crystal Mining. The company mines Phantom crystals right here on Vancouver Island. How their Phantom crystals materialized is fascinating and a member of the trio of men who found them said their discovery has garnered them world wide attention. Andre Lyons explained how they were tree planting on the West Coast in 2015 that fateful grey day when the sun came out at their feet revealing the hidden treasure. “It looked like smashed glass that shines in the sun. I was an amateur rock hound but this looked a little bit different,” he recalled. Turns out it was actinolite embedded within quartz crystal. Though similar to tourmaline, this form of semiprecious stone was wholly unique. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

“IT IS IT IS ABOUT GETTING OUT IN NATURE LOOKING FOR GEMS. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN ROCKS THESE DAYS BECAUSE OF THEIR ENERGY PROPERTIES” These were only fractures of the beauty that lay hidden within the soil and bedrock and over the coming months they carefully dug up the trail of natural wonders, finding more beautiful and diverse specimens. In 2016 they discovered their first vug from which the trail of crystals had flowed over the past hundreds of thousands of years. Lyons said they dig by hand avoiding environmental damage and as they continue to follow the treasure trail they will always respect Mother Earth’s gifts. “We only dig by hand without machinery. What we want to find are the bigger clusters. We are in pockets and veins that have collapsed and filled with sediment. They were formed eons ago and have separated as the ground has moved.” While their discovery is not a secret anymore one thing that is certain is the crystals are extremely rare and unfortunately, only three veins have been located on the claim, meaning the supply of the world’s only forest crystal could eventually run dry. To see the rare beauties and other natural wonders, visit the PCCC Saturday February 9 and Sunday February 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 and kids under 12 are free. MORE INFORMATION

SECOND CHANCES AN OUTSTANDING SCRIPT AND LYRICS KICKS OFF THE 2019 SEASON FOR ECHO PLAYERS
A
n original musical powered by an outstanding script and lyrics kicks off the 2019 season for Echo Players and the team bringing it to life is confident that audiences will fall in love with the play which opens on Valentine’s Day. Director Jennifer Kelly said Second Chances has been a labour of love for her and everyone else involved in the production. Based on the book and lyrics by writer David Jewell, Second Chances is a brand new original Canadian production that will be debuted on the stage of the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. Set in 1955 in New York City the play within a play follows the tradition of musicals from the golden era. An off Broadway theatre is struggling with only two weeks until the opening night of their production Ole Louisiana. However, the arrival of a mysterious stranger sets in motion a series of unpredictable events. The story was set in motion following a conversation Jewell had with a man who was homeless on the streets of Toronto back in the 1980’s. The idea of an individual dealing with despair and conflicts and difficult situations appealed to the writer in Jewell and he said he hopes the story will resonate with people. “The play itself is not specifically about
homelessness but I do think people can relate to an individual who is dealing with great difficult circumstances and overcoming adversity in life. It is a recurring theme throughout the play with many of the characters. In different levels they are
“THEY ARE GETTING A SECOND OPPORTUNITY IN LIFE WHETHER IT IS RETURNING TO THE BROADWAY STAGE OR REKINDLING AN OLD ROMANCE OR RECONNECTING AND REDISCOVERING ONE’S PASSION” getting a second opportunity in life whether it is returning to the Broadway stage or rekindling an old romance or reconnecting and rediscovering one’s passion,” he stated. Nico Rhodes is the musical collaborator who wrote a huge amount of the plays music and Kelly said both Rhodes and Jewell have created something truly special. She said the play is a captivating story and she is thrilled that it will be premiered at the Village Theatre. “When David first showed me this play it was just
beautiful. I love old musical theatre pieces. Musical theatre has been my passion my whole life and I actually recorded a few songs with Nico and David and a wonderful gentleman named Eric and I just fell in love with the music,” she exclaimed. Jewell admitted it is quite exhilarating to have a story he wrote so long ago finally be brought to life. “To be quite honest there was a point when I didn’t think it was ever going to be on stage. It was almost produced in 2009 and looking back in retrospect it was probably the best thing that ever happened that it wasn’t because I think hopefully as a writer you grow.” He added ten years ago Nico Rhodes was just 19 and was relatively inexperienced as far as doing musical theatre. “He has grown also as a composer. I think as a consequence of having that delay has actually improved the quality of the production,” admitted Jewell. Although Rhodes was unable to participate in the stage production, Kelly said having Patrick Courtin as the musical director and Kathy Harper as the rehearsal pianist has resulted in an impressive collaboration. “While this is the first time to put it on its feet some things you need to change and you need to adapt so to have Cathy there in all of the rehearsals and working through all of that and Patrick through all
of the rehearsals … their knowledge of music and their impact on the process has just made it so exciting,” Kelly emphasized. Choreographer Miranda Atkinson said the musical includes the Broadway dance genre and more. “We have a tongue and cheek dance number where there are cat and mouse elements at the same time there is a number that is called Spark and it is very classic Broadway with all of the hands and the big smiles. There is also a song Yesterdays News which is very reminiscent of a Follies fantasy number where we dance with fans so I would say it embodies that classic Broadway dance style but we do get a lot of fun variation and that’s really awesome.” Second Chances opens February 14 and runs until March 3. I was at a party and the host was getting worried because there were too many people and not enough refreshments. She was sure that not all of these people had been invited but didn't know how to tell which ones were the crashers. Then her husband got an idea...
YOU MAKE THE EVENT, WE’LL SEND THE CROWD.
He turned to the crowd of guests and said, "Will those who are from the bride's side of the family stand up please?" About twenty people stood. Then he asked, "Will those who are from the groom's side of the family stand up as well?" About twenty five people stood up. Then he smiled and said, "Will all those who stood please leave, this is a birthday party."
