GO BACK IN TIME AND TOUCH THE PAST The Antique Barn (aka Antique Emporium) has been a landmark for travellers on the Trans-Canada Hwy. through Chemainus since the early 80s, and has seen a few colour changes and owners over the years. Kevin Smith took over the business in July of this year, and is excited to twist some new life into the already fantastic store, and change the perception of what an antique store should be. Smith is actually a well-respected chef, with an impressive list of clients that spans the globe, who decided that he needed a change of pace. Since taking over, Smith has increased the number of vendors to 42, and brought in a wider range of antiques and collectables. There is a six foot Iron Man figure waiting to greet you when you walk in the store, as well as lots of vinyl records, comics, and action figures. They are even having a food truck in the parking lot every weekend! Smith really wants to draw in younger people to the store, and also encourage them to purchase quality furniture over the box store furniture that sees a very short life. As you browse further through the store you’ll find a huge range of items like high end jewellery, war memorabilia, tools, and so much more. The stock is always changing, so well worth making regular visits to the store, and as Kevin says “the best time to buy an antique is when you see it”, as it likely won’t be there next time you are in. If we still haven’t convinced you to stop by the store, then their February sale surely will—storewide a minimum of 10% off with some items even hitting 50% off! Make sure to tell them that the What’s On Digest sent you!

SMALL BLOCK BREWING IS TURNING HEADS

It wasn’t long ago that the only choice for beer was to purchase mass produced cans or bottles brewed by a handful of large companies. Luckily the micro brewing industry took off and flavour is back on the menu! Aaron and Cate Scally at Small Block Brewing Company were able to embrace this trend and are now producing some of the finest ales the Island has to offer right here in the Cowichan Valley. Fittingly, they opened the business on St. Patrick’s Day in 2018, after moving over from the mainland. Aaron is a helicopter mechanic by trade, and after breaking his arm, he and Cate, began experimenting with brewing beer at home. From there the hobby grew into a business. They are open Wednesday through Sunday, ready to fill your growler, but are also a cool place to just hang out after work for a beer with some friends. They even offer live music on Thursday nights.

There are a few things that really separate Small Block from other breweries. They use a special protein clarifier to their brews which drops the gluten content down to 20 ppm. While not technically gluten-free, many people who are gluten intolerant find they are able to consume the beer without any negative effects. Also unique: they use bread collected by Cowichan Green Community (CGC) to brew special beers, and the ales take some flavour profile from the bread they used, such as sourdough or rye. Partial proceeds of the sales from those beers also go to support the CGC. Aaron and Cate source most of the ingredients locally, with malt and hops coming from right here on the Island. They also serve up Cowichan’s Valley Cider as a beer alternative. Habitat Farm on Thetis Island blends the beer into craft pepperoni, which is also sold at the Small Block. Make sure to stop in and say hi to Cate and Aaron when you need to fill up your growler, or even better, bring some friends for some beers and take in the good vibes!

Long Live Bees Bees have been recently declared the most important living beings on the planet, yet they are on the endagered species list. They are endangered mainly due to: • Widespread use of pesticides in agriculture and gardens • Deforestation and loss of natural habitat There is an up to 90% loss of bees globally. If this carries on, our food supply will collapse, followed shortly by ourselves, as 70% of our food relies on the pollination of bees. It’s not something that might happen, it will happen unless we act now. The great thing is that every single one of us can do something extremely positive to bring bees back, and keep them here. The message is simple : Save them, save us. • • • • •

Have a mason bee condo. Simple, easy and fun Avoid garden pesticides and herbicides. These kill bees. Grow pollen rich plants and flowers throughout the season. Have a ‘wild’ patch in your garden. Let dandelions grow freely, grow clover and wildflowers too. Grow flowers and fruit/veg, reduce the amount of grass.

Long Live Bees is a local company owned by Cath and Steve Scanlan. We moved to the Island from mainland BC two years ago and found it to be the ideal place to begin our business. We are passionate about saving our most important pollinators, and focussing on the spring Mason Bee, we offer advice, encouragement and practical help in keeping this fascinating, very gentle but super pollinating bee. Anyone can do it, just give the bees the right conditions and let them do their job, they don't make honey, but your garden will flourish. Volunteering: Just another New Year’s resolution? It’s that time of year again when we desire to do something good for ourselves or others. Far too often, there is a gap between what we want to do and what we can do, and why many goodintentioned New Year’s resolutions are never fully realized or fall away soon after starting. At the start of a new year, Barb came to the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA), wanting to support therapeutic riding lessons as a side walker or horse handler. Barb’s personal story was one of the reasons CTRA’s inclusive programs resonated with her. Barb suffers from complications due to a traumatic brain injury. She fatigues quickly, wrestles with short term memory, and can get easily confused. When it became apparent that she was not able to fulfill the responsibilities of a volunteer role directly in a therapy lesson, she was disappointed. However, Barb was resolute. She still wanted to support CTRA and therapeutic riding. She introduced her neighbour Joan to the idea of volunteering (Joan became a horse handler and now volunteers twice a week). Barb utilized a Facebook fundraiser for CTRA, donating the proceeds to our operational costs. As she continued to advocate for equine-assisted activities, she decided that entering into the program itself might reveal the ‘hands-on’ support she so desired to give. She started with CTRA’s stable management program, learning how to care for and groom the horses, working alongside the barn staff to complete the daily tasks of a working stable. The vocational program in CTRA’s used tack shop was her next step. Finally, Barb decided to get back in the saddle and enjoy the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of riding, with her neighbour Joan supporting her as a horse handler! Barb’s story is a stellar example of starting where you are and following through to find your way. Volunteering is not just an admirable resolution; it has numerous benefits personally and exponentially in our community. So what can you do? CTRA relies on volunteer power and the ongoing support of donors and sponsors to enable us to provide positive change through therapeutic riding and related programs. Photo: Barb on Josefa-CTRA.
