FIFTY PARALLEL TAP AND GRILL BY ACROPOLIS The legendary Acropolis Kuizina had become one of Campbell River’s favourite dining locations with a great combination of Greek food, succulent Steaks and Lamb all served with character that was larger than life. Peter and Colleen, had outgrown their location at Merecroft Village, and were in search of a waterfront property. Colleen and Peter put boots to pavement over two years and explored several waterfront opportunities. Nothing was quite hitting on the vision that Colleen had until, the iconic Freddies Pub came up for sale, a landmark pub that was getting tired and needed a strong vision and a whole lot of love, the perfect project for Colleen. Acropolis at Merecroft closed its doors at the end of April 2019 with the thought that the new premises would be ready to open May 1st. But as luck would have it, there were several delays with contractors, licenses and equipment. Opening on June 1st, the newly renovated property looked nothing like its former self inside and out. It didn’t take long before the kitchen, bar and staff found the rhythm of serving Acropolis favourites and newly introduced west coast dishes to the eagerly waiting patrons. In August the back room was transformed and the long awaited intimate ‘Acropolis Room’ was re-opened with all its familiar woods and atmosphere. Now with its huge outdoor patio, the social house and the Acropolis room, Fifty Parallel seats close to 200 people in the summer and 150 in the winter. With chefs, cooks, barista’s, bartenders and servers, Colleen and Peter work daily at keeping it all on course. A fabulous addition of 20 rotating beers and ciders, plus a large wine and spirit menu was added along with charcuterie, shareables, more seafood options and gluten free choices all alongside the usual favourites. It was well worth the wait, and already Campbell River have adopted Fifty Parallel as its very own.

CHUCK & CHARLIES CHILDRENS APPAREL When one door closes another opens. This was the case for Helena a new Campbell River resident from Hinton Alberta, who moved to Sayward in June 2019 and set up shop in Campbell River on shoppers row doing what she does best. The new Chuck and Charlies is an all season children’s clothing store located in the old Monk office supply store. This children’s store stops at nothing to supply everything in children’s clothing and footwear. Helena, husband and eight year old daughter move to an acreage in Sayward, something that they had always dreamed of having. Chuck and Charlies was an established business that Helena had in Hinton, and once the opportunity came up to move, they packed up and headed west. Helena also has two older boys, and is very aware of the struggle to find durable clothing that lasts. Seeing the need for children’s quality clothing in Campbell River was the inspiration to move life and business. Being all seasons means that the large store ranges in all sizes from preemie to size 18 for boys and 16 for girls in Summer and Winter clothing. Everything from footwear, dance wear, cowboy boots, snow gear, swim wear, rain gear, underwear, and special occasion clothing plus all the accessories are available all year round. You can expect to find name brands such as DC, Levi, Name it, Hurly, Quicksilver, Nike, Converse, Burnside and Fox all under recommended retail pricing. Actually, the prices are astonishing. Helena says some of the challenges of children’s clothing is understanding the sizing, these days so many kids mature early but others don’t especially for girls. Coming up with the right styles and colours that suit all ages takes some learning. For Helena being available for families needs no matter what time of year was her priority and focus for the store.

Campbell River needed a good butcher and fortunately Rob and Lance heard the cry from all the way down in Victoria. Smith & Lee Butcher was a life long vision that the two guys had when they went shoulder to shoulder as young apprentices learning to become butchers. Both working in various different sectors after the butcher industry took a bit of a decline, they re-connected after Rob and family had moved to Campbell River in 2009. The time was right and the location was prime, the two friends had the chance to start their own business together, and give Campbell River what they were truly looking for in a good butcher.

When I asked them about the challenges they faced on opening, they were quick to add that being able to work with demand and availability is a learning curve. The opening was slowed down by equipment being delayed, and product slow to arrive. Some perceptions after previous tenants was also a tough one. Rob and Lance want everyone to know that Smith & Lee will be providing a full service of choice quality meats, and cutting. CROOKED SPOON CAFE The Shoppers Row location was quickly snapped up by new Campbell River resident Jeremy Keighley. Jeremy and his wife Cheyenne with son Owen moved to Campbell River from Vancouver for a better pace of life during 2017. Jeremy a certified chef and instructor has worked in the restaurant industry for 20 years. Positions that placed him in high paced kitchens and catering to co-ordinating the backend runnings of the restaurant business, was a day to day juggle with a young family. The opportunity to come to Campbell River and find a better work/life balance was just too appealing. Picking up odd jobs and forever talking about owning his own restaurant, when the opportunity came up the decision was quick and easy and ’The Crooked Spoon’ became a reality. Experience lead to an easy transition with VIHA, city requirements and finding the right staff. The goal was to create a simple menu that could service the workforce and families. Jeremy says, “I just want to give the ‘good food quick, if they want to stay longer, that will be their choice not because they are waiting for their food to be ready”. Going forward the vision will be to introduce classes and teach international cooking as well as themed dishes such as Fondues and Tapas. It’s a big space, so work meetings and committee gatherings or even paint nights are welcome. When I asked Jeremy what was the most notable difference between Vancouver and here for this industry he said, “the opportunity to make relationships and enjoy the customers is easier and makes each day much more enjoyable”. “In Vancouver I don’t get a chance to lift my head let alone having a good laugh with a customer”. Open 6 days a week with an all day breakfast and lunch menu Monday to Friday, with a special brunch “eggs benny day” on Sunday. The wholesome fluid menu definitely hits all the comfort and healthy buttons. FRESH START BISTRO A bold move for Michael Hnidy after his wife Tracy challenged him to embrace his dreams and get on with what he had always envisaged in owning his own Vegan restaurant. Michael became a dedicated Vegan February 2016 after a cancer scare and a yearning to put an end to slaughtering animals and to stop taxing the planet. Since becoming a vegan both Mike and Tracy have gained strength, mental clarity with optimum health and best of all cancer free. Opening Fresh Bistro in January 2019, gave Mike the opportunity to not only offer tasty Vegan meals but to educate people on the outcomes of meat eating and animal preservation. Less farmed animals means less impact on the planet. I could of sat and listened to Mike for hours about animal conservation and the benefits of plant based diet but really the baked goods and the smell of red curry lentil soup was wofting out of the kitchen and I just wanted to try it. I didn’t need to be convinced the food smells and looks terrific. The variety of foods and flavours that Fresh Start has to offer are out of this world. I know for many when you think plant based, your thinking rabbit food or beans, but Michael that is far from the tasty menu options available Hnidy here. Each day there are six fresh soups, stirfrys, pasta with tasty vegan sauces. The burgers and the salads are far from boring. A variety of hot beverages with various types of organic nut, soy or oat milks. Who knew that plant base could taste this good. It’s no surprise that the staff are all plant based eating and just glowing ready to give you the list options. If your craving a Nanaimo bar, cup cakes, squares, and other sweet treats go no further, and your body will thank you for it. You just got to try it.
