Everyone’s Puzzle Looks a Little Different Currently, 1 in 6 children in Canada has an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. What is the Autism Spectrum? Autism involves difficulties in processing thoughts and connecting outcomes. The spectrum includes communication, social awareness, an intense focus/mindset, highly sensitive or insensitive responses, and restricted or repetitive behaviours. Children with ASD don’t just have one marker on this spectrum; they have all of them in varying degrees. Having ASD can make the world a scary place, so how do we support children with an array of needs? It needs to start with patience and understanding. Early intervention is vital, while children are still building their neurological pathways. We can help guide and support in areas where processing and connecting outcomes seem absent. CTRA uses horses as partners in this process! Justin reads to his horse friend Smokey. The human-equine bond as a relationship builder is mystical but proven. It is a communication reliant on touch, emotion and physical movement. Mark talks to his volunteers now. Riders practice social awareness in a safe routine of cause and effect, interacting with their horses and the volunteer team supporting them. Jack calls his weekly barn visits his “job”. New actions and behaviours outside of regular routines help broaden experiences and diversify focus. Benjamin isn’t afraid to walk in the sand any longer. A barn is a wonderful place of sights, sounds and of course, smells, which can become familiar sensations with routine and a horse as a guide. Allie can now direct her horse gently while balancing in a good position. Research has proven that recreation and physical activity stimulate the learning system. Horseback riding builds core strength and encourages motor development. Achieving these milestones gives freedom through independence and establishes stronger links to caregivers, friends, our community and the world around them. Everyone’s ASD puzzle looks a little different. Therapeutic riding can help connect the hard to fit pieces.

WOMEN ADVOCATING FOR WOMEN As International Women’s Day approaches this month, a lot of shocking realities that still exist in our society – and right here in our community – are exposed from their festering darkness, reminding us that there is still so much work needed to ensure the fundamental right of safety and equality of women. Kendra Thomas, the Program Coordinator of Warmland Women’s Support Services Society, is on the front line in Cowichan working with survivors of sexual violence, and tirelessly working to bring resources to our community that address the gaps in our system. She is an advocate, activist, and trusted voice that you may have heard at
social action events throughout the year. She sat down with us to explain the work that they do, and we hope that the awareness of their programs can help people in need to access their services. Warmland Women’s Support Services Society operates a Sexual Assault Advocacy Centre on St. Julien Street (right behind Shoppers Drug Mart) where survivors of sexual violence – of all gender identities, the LGBTQ community, and new Canadians – can get compassionate support so they are not alone while they attend medical appointments, report to the RCMP, or attend court proceedings during the aftermath of sexualized crime. They also
17
run a Saturday morning women’s group, and workshops on healthy relationships, female workplace harassment, trauma-informed care, and how a community can become more than a bystander to intimate and sexualized violence, among several other important topics. Thomas shared her next initiative to create an Integrated Sexual Assault Clinic, which is a space where survivors can go and all services they require will come directly to them. It is a survivor centred response that ensures needs are met in a timely and effective way. The agency’s services are often accessed through referrals from community agencies, but anyone can call their support line in a time of crisis. They are funded through grants from all levels of government, Island Health, the Department of Justice, and others, but are always in need of corporate sponsors and individual donors to support their core programs and to expand their services to address the many needs in the community. The agency also supports, participates, and helps organize six to eight Social Action events per year in Cowichan like the Redress Project for Missing and Murdered
Indigenous Women, One Billion Rising, Pride events, and #metoo Cowichan. It is important we attend events like these, as it sends a message to survivors that they are not alone, to governments that the issue is pressing and urgent, and to perpetrators of the violence that those acts are not acceptable. It is also paramount that men become more involved and vocal against this violence – shut down the “locker room talk” immediately, lead our community by example and teach them strong ethics. We need to make it so shameful and “unmanly” to consider behaving that way, change views that women “ask” to be raped by “dressing that way”, and intervene immediately. In 2020, we can not accept the staggering numbers of sexual and physical violence against women, and collectively we must be vocal and loud, and demand that full resources be in place to effectively support victims and to effectively address the complex causes of abuse. Our Community must become more than just a bystander. If you need support, know you are not alone, and please contact Warmland Women’s Support Society at 250-710-8177.

To celebrate International Women’s Day we asked four questions to some of today's modern business women in the Cowichan Valley. We asked them to take an inward look from where they have come to the lighter side of who they are.
Overwhelmingly, women of today are claiming ownership of who they are. Their determination and persistence has given them the freedom to choose lifestyles and independence that 50 years ago was unheard of. The Stereotype woman has gone, the house bound with children
woman has gone, and more and more woman are improvising, becoming industrious and relishing in the opportunity to be expressive, creative and making their own money. Woman are looking deeper, transforming the “What do I do” vs “What skills and character do I have that allows me to do what I want”. In 2020 hurdles have become opportunities, today’s woman is a risk taker is it any wonder we see so many woman landing in business and become entrepreneurs in their own right. Written by Cathy Kaardal

Arts Club Theatre Company’s smash hit comedy Kim’s Convenience comes to Cowichan for one night only! Most successful new Canadian play in recent history on stage at Cowichan Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, March 28 at 7:30pm Duncan, BC — February 16, 2020 — Ins Choi’s hilarious and touching play, Kim’s Convenience, set in a family-run corner store will be presented by the Arts Club Theatre Company, live on stage at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, March 28 at 7:30pm. In this hilarious story, Mr. Kim (James Yi), or Appa, a Korean shopkeeper in Toronto’s Regent Park area, grapples with both a changing neighbourhood landscape and the gap between him and his second-generation Canadian offspring. The world of Kim’s Convenience is real, colourful and urban – a diverse landscape of people and places – with the Kim family at its core, as they find humour in their everyday lives running the store. “Having the opportunity to bring the show and Appa's story to Cowichan Performing Arts Centre is incredible,” says CVRD Arts and Culture Manager, Kirsten Schrader. “This is a story about reconciliation, sacrifice, and deep family love. It’s also hilariously funny, and I know that Cowichan audiences will delight in this wonderful production.” Ins Choi is a Korean-Canadian actor, playwright, and director known for his plays Kim's Convenience and Subway Stations of the Cross.

David James and Big River are often described as one of the most authentic Outlaw Country tribute shows touring today. Thousands of fans agree with those reviews, as they routinely sell-out shows in venues large and small across Canada and the U.S. From the way, James holds his guitar to the way he talks to his audience, the legendary musicians live again when James steps to the mike and says, “Hello – I’m almost Johnny Cash," or plays that classic leather-bound Telecaster guitar like Waylon. The professionalism on and off the stage is a testament to the memory of Cash and Waylon that fans have come to expect from David James and Big River. The extensive catalogue of songs from Cash like Folsom Prison, Boy named Sue and Ring of Fire and Waylon's mega-hits like Luckenbach Texas, Good-hearted woman and Mammas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys, attracts audiences young and old alike to relive the music of these great country icons. "It's not only about the voice," James said. "It's about living and breathing the men - Their postures, their mannerisms, their moves and quirks.
