YOUR FINANCIAL REPORT CARD

You thought when you graduated from high school that you’d seen the end of report cards. Your credit report is your financial report card and it rates you on your borrowing and bill-paying habits.

There are two credit bureaus in Canada: Equifax and Trans Union which, in simple terms, function like clubs. They gather information about your financial affairs and sell it to their members for profit. All the big banks and lenders belong to the clubs and share any little tidbit of financial gossip with lenders, employers, landlords and insurance companies. For example, if you bank at RBC then RBC will report everything they know about you and your financial transactions to the credit bureau. When you go to Ford to get a car loan, Ford will have access to all the information that RBC knows about you.

years! The moral of the story is: request a copy of your credit report and see how you’re doing. If there are mistakes or problems, get them fixed. Everyone has the potential to have great credit!

Your Credit Report is much like a school report card: you are given a numeric rating, called a FICO or Beacon Score, which indicates how well you’ve managed your finances and the risk you represent for lenders. Scores range from 300 to 900. The higher your score, the lower the risk you represent: Below 500 500 – 549 550 – 599 600 – 649 650 – 699 700 – 800 800+

Very high risk High risk Moderately high risk Moderate risk Moderately low risk Low risk Very low risk

Unlike schools, the Credit Bureaus don’t send you a regular reports letting you know how well or how poorly you’re doing. If you want to see your Credit Report you have to request it (www. equifax.ca or www.transunion.ca). Imagine going through years of school without a report card. You head out to get a job and your potential employer pulls your report card and, to your surprise, you’ve had a D in English for the past 5

Trivia Answers

WO: Can you show me some of the things you are working on?

WO: If there’s one thing you could say to someone that wants to do some restoration work on their vehicle but is afraid they can’t afford it what would you say to them? CHIP: I’ve never had that problem – If you go back to a stock look it can be a bit less but overall the more custom the more money. Like any project you can always do it in sections start small and work up. Most of my customers want the highest quality work. It’s what they pay for and it’s what they get.

I was at a party and the host was getting worried because there were too many people and not enough refreshments. She was sure that not all of these people had been invited but didn’t know how to tell which ones were the crashers. Then her husband got an idea... He turned to the crowd of guests and said, “Will those who are from the bride’s side of the family stand up please?” About twenty people stood. Then he asked, “Will those who are from the groom’s side of the family stand up as well?” About twenty five people stood up. Then he smiled and said, “Will all those who stood please leave, this is a birthday party.”

History of the VIEX

13

The Fair originally started over 100 years ago and continues now as an annual event to advance the education of agriculture and showcase local farmers and 4-H clubs, bringing agricultural awareness to our community.

August 16,17 & 18, 2013 Gates Open at 9:00AM Beban Park Fairgrounds Shooting Star Midway | Livestock Kids Zone | RC Competition

As farming changes and land becomes more urban, we need to keep our farms alive, to provide top quality products and to encourage the education of the past, present and future of all areas of agriculture. Although some professionals show at Fairs, it is the children that most impress the fairgoers. Bright eyed children and animals are a winning combination. We take a step back to celebrate the simple, but important things in life. Our country Fair is more than just entertainment. The one value we truly exhibit is Family. At our Fair, everyone of every age can participate. From displaying jams, jellies and livestock to showing heirloom quilts, artwork, pumpkins, prize flowers, home grown zucchini, fresh baked cookies and pies. Many painstaking but loving hours, go into every item and animal on display, with the hopes of encouraging others to learn different crafts and skills and to especially excite beginners to try new things that can enhance their life skills and self-sufficiency. Our Fair is a place to come with family and friends, a place to have fun and honour accomplishments. Our entry fees are kept very low, as is the prize money. The intent has never been to make the winners rich by having or making the best, the biggest or the most expensive entry, but to enjoy the variety of talents and efforts put forth by our neighbours and to honour accomplishments. PET TIP The coast is beautiful during the summer months and we are drawn out to explore the vast outside world that surrounds our homes. We pack up the kids, the dog, and everything that goes with them, and head for wherever it is the day takes us. We slap sunscreen, hats and hiking boots on the kids and ourselves before we let them race on the trails. We warn the kids what poison ivy looks like and smear calamine lotion on them when they find it anyway. But what about Rover? Is there anything else we should be worrying about?

Official Wellness Plan Launch August 24th 10am-2pm Preventive

Written Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital

Dogs are generally very self-sufficient when it comes to roaming the great outdoors...after all, that’s where they came from. However, many of our friends don’t resemble the majestic wolf and are not as instinctually aware of the risks they can come across on a simple hike. There are a few things that we can be aware of to help out our furry friends during the summer. No, they don’t need hats and long-sleeved shirts! But dogs that have short white fur or have had very short hair-cuts do need sunscreen. Use the spray kind – it gets through their fur better and isn’t as messy. Oh, and avoid those sensitive faces...spray it on your hand if you need to and apply it to the area. Dogs also can get heat stroke. To avoid this potentially fatal and often critical condition, never leave a dog in a vehicle on a warm day. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can soar above 100 degrees Celsius (boiling temperature!) in a very short period of time. Dogs can also suffer from heat stroke when they are outside and exerting a lot of energy in the sun. Always ensure that you have plenty of shade and cool water available to your dog when you are spending time outside in the sun together. Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, a panicked expression, a drylooking tongue, rapid heart rate, dry gums and losing consciousness. What do you do if your dog is displaying one or more of these signs? It is an emergency – head straight to the closest veterinary clinic. When out on a walk or run in the heat ensure your dog has access to plenty of water. If you are thirsty, so is she. When we bring our girl on family outings, we carry a fold-up bowl with us and fill it for her whenever the kids start asking for water. She usually slugs down most of what we put in there. As well, when we come across a lake or stream, we encourage her to get in the water and cool down – she is a Lab so that’s not too difficult!

Promoting animal health through preventive and modern veterinary medicine

Finally, watch for conditions that can damage her feet, including broken glass, sharp rocks and even hot pavement. We’ve had several dogs come in with burns on their pads from racing around on asphalt in very hot weather. In the summertime, the most important is get out and enjoy being outside with your four-legged friend while being conscious of her comfort and safety. Dogs love being with us and they love doing things with us. Taking your friend for a walk, even around the block, will have a surprisingly good effect on both of your moods!

Over and over we are told we need 250-618-3443 BodyTempo.com to reduce our food and drink intake to lose weight and look trim and toned. This is not necessarily true. Your body gets the energy it needs from food through a process called metabolism. Metabolism is a complicated chemical process, so it’s not surprising that many people think of it in its simplest sense: as something that influences how easily our bodies gain or lose weight. Thousands of years ago, when eating was a matter of survival, the body would protect itself by slowing down the rate at which it burned calories (lower metabolism) to maintain weight. In modern society, we have the opposite problem of too much and readily available low cost high calorie food which results in weight gain. The easy button is not necessarily the healthy button when it comes to eating.

Less food means less excess body fat right? Wrong! As a personal trainer and lifestyle coach I continually hear how people believe that eating less is how to lose weight. Less food means less excess body fat right? Wrong! The human body has adapted over time for survival. So when you give the body less food, the result is a slow metabolism which means your body will store the small amounts of food you eat as fat in order to facilitate your “survival”. That’s why it is important to focus on eating healthy, balanced

meals and to exercise regularly. This will prevent your metabolism from getting too slow. When my clients embrace a new eating program I am significantly increasing the amount of healthy food intake. People are typically surprised how much food they get to eat. They are equally surprised and delighted that in only a short few months they feel and look healthier than they thought possible. When you eat healthy foods and exercise you lower your body fat, increase muscle mass and develop far higher energy levels. The result is a more toned body with tons of energy to continue doing the things you love to do. So say goodbye to those energy lowering fad diets and really get in love with eating fresh wholesome food and always feeling satisfied. Erin Crawford, Personal Trainer Body Tempo Health and Fitness

The building blocks of society I recently had the opportunity to take a walking tour of the budding Cinnabar Heights subdivision and was inspired by both the beautiful location and the vision of the developer. The locale is close enough to town, and to the amenities the city has to offer, but there is a peaceful ‘country’ feeling out there that is unmistakable and very calming. The style of homes being built struck me in terms of how distinct each home was from its neighbor. It made me wonder if the differences in the homes being built may give rise to a quality within the neighborhood in a way that contributes to a stronger foundation for the families growing up there. What I’m talking about is the kind of place where you have enough similarities and yet differences among the residents as to have what you might call ‘a good mix.’ Consider an analogy, which party would you rather go to: one where there are only bankers and engineers all from the same 2 firms or one where there are bankers, engineers,

artists, young and old, merchants and people from different many backgrounds? The first party sounds more like a meeting and might be pretty dull so if you chose that one then well I hope you like talking numbers. My point is diversity breeds growth and creates an environment where interesting things can
