WILD HORSES of sable island august 5, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
C
oombs artist Joan Larson is inviting the public for an evening of adventure at the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC) Tuesday, August 5th from 7 to 9 p.m. Larson will give a presentation on the wild horses of Sable Island. Her slide show, paintings and photographs about the remote and exotic location off the East Coast of Canada is free to attend. Her equine artwork is being featured at the MAC throughout the month of August along with pieces created by Parksville glass artist Robert Held. Five years ago the award winning pastel artist embarked on her first visit to Sable Island and she acknowledged it was a life changing experience. “I would go for walks and just sit. It was wonderful. I would be in the middle of wild horses and they just ignore you, they just graze and do what horses do without interference from humans,” she recalled
about that adventure. She said she got up close and personal with some horses on that visit and now it is indelibly etched into her marrow. “Anyone who has been there says the same thing,” she said. Special permission is needed to gain access to the restricted island and visitors have to make their own transportation arrangements to and from the island, as well as bring all their own supplies. During that profound visit, Larson took photographs of the wild horses, the landscape, sunsets and other wildlife on the island, and when she got back home she created a series called the Wild Horses of Sable Island. Last summer she returned to the magical island and once again she was moved by the peace and serenity of being in a place so far removed from civilization. On her second visit, Parks Canada had implemented some new restrictions including a 20 metre set back. Although she couldn’t touch the animals this time,

she was just as enthralled by being in their presence. “I respect that they are a wild animal and if a policy is hands-off... let it be that way. They should be left alone.” She recalled wandering down to the beach to watch the sunset and there were horses grazing in the sand dunes. “It was a magic moment of bliss. It would be amazing to go every year,” she admitted. Larson has always been fascinated by horses. She got her first horse at age 10 and currently owns two horses named Sunshine and Pride. “Horses ground me. I don’t ride that much, but going down to the barn with a wheelbarrow and pitch fork balances everything out.” The equine artist will also be conducting some pastel workshops at the MAC this month. The workshops are open to all skill levels from beginner to experienced and will be held on August 5 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HI NEIGHBOUR DAY august 16, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
A
n event where you can expect everything from a soap box derby for zucchinis to the world’s smallest parade takes place in the heart of Errington on Saturday, August 16th. The 45th annual Hi Neighbour Day will offer something for everyone in the family and proceeds raised from the event will help pay for the repair and maintenance of the Errington War Memorial Hall. Built as a memorial to those who died in World War I, the hall opened its doors in March 1922 and continues to be maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. Every year those volunteers invite neighbours and friends for a get-together to celebrate the community with a day full of activities and an evening dance to cap it all off. The day’s activities start out with a hearty
pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Volunteers from the Errington Fire Department will be flipping flap jacks and frying up sausages until 10 a.m. The breakfast provides an opportunity for the public to meet the men and women in blue who provide fire and emergency services in the community. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. there is an arts & crafts display which showcases fine work done by Erringtonians of all ages in the old fire hall next to the main hall. If you'd like to help, or display your work, call Lane Franklin at 250-248-5724. At 11 a.m. you won’t wan to miss the 5th annual Greater Errington Zucchini Race on the ball field next to the farmers market. The soap box derby for zucchinis with wheels draws quite a crowd as zucchinis race down the ramp to glory or grief. Entrants compete in youth and adult divisions, fuelling their entries with
fb.com/whatsonpqb 17
creativity to take home the prize for fastest and best in show. A special Errington Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. will feature music by The Rivals on the community stage as well as vendors with fresh produce, local crafts and great food. The Hi Neighbour Parade, reputed to be the world’s shortest parade, starts at 12:30 p.m. It makes its way from the old Elementary School site on Grafton, around the corner and down Errington Road to the hall. Bob Herbison, who has been on the hall board since 1980, agreed the parade is pretty cool because it always has an eclectic mix of participants in the procession. “It’s anything goes. There are people driving tractors and people with pick-ups and straw bails and kids in the back, kids riding tricycles and people on stilts... you name it.”
Follow the parade down to the hall for some lunch served up by members from the Hall Association at 1 p.m. and hang around for the goods and services auction with a mix of silent auction items as well a live auctioneer to keep the excitement going. The day winds up at 9 p.m. with an allages Hi Neighbour dance featuring the roots flavoured rock band The Matinee and special guest A.J. Woodworth. Tickets for the dance are $20 and must be purchased in advance at Cranky Dog Music in Parksville, The Errington General Store, and Heaven on Earth in Qualicum Beach.

TRAIN STATION 100th Anniversary august 23, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
A
birthday party celebrating 100 years of the Qualicum Beach Train Station August 23 promises to be a nostalgic affair the whole family will enjoy. A century ago, Qualicum Beach had the reputation as the playground for the rich and famous and upper class members of society would arrive in droves to spend the summer at the resorts along the beach. From England's monarchy and the King of Siam to Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, the list of dignitaries and celebrities who visited Qualicum Beach in the very early days of settlement is impressive. And while the locomotives no longer shuttle socialites to the area these days, the train station is still a beehive of activity and the Town of Qualicum Beach has a big centennial party in the works to celebrate its rich and colourful history.
Sherri Verdec has been coordinating the day’s activities which will include music by Bill Cave and the Dixieland Band and The Old Time Fiddlers. In addition to authentic train station memorabilia, interactive train exhibits and fashions of the era, there will also be food concessions, popcorn and candy floss. The official cake cutting will take place at 2 p.m. with a special train station birthday cake created by Quality Foods. Verdec says she anticipates a lot of people will show up in period costumes for the event and history buffs will be treated to a myriad of treasures and artifacts from a by-gone era. “The Centennial Belles from Port Alberni have been busy sewing their hearts out. They are making replicas of fashions from that era and will be doing a fashion show,” she said. Children will be able to ride the rails that day on an actual speeder crew car

and then head across the street to the Qualicum Beach Museum which will be celebrating its own anniversary of 30 years. There will be old fashioned games and activities for kids as wells as Train Station historical displays at the museum for all to enjoy. Verdec said even though the centuries old building now houses a high tech digital studio, its amazing history is still evident and an old fashioned community celebration is just the ticket to pay tribute to its colourful past. Councillor Mary Brouilette said the Town of Qualicum Beach is excited to help facilitate the party and she is excited that so many community groups want to be a part of it. “A lot of friendships and connections are made by putting on these events and it creates a synergy between several groups in the community…that is why the town supports it,” explained Brouilette. Some things have changed and some
have stayed the same over the years and Brouilette agreed the Town has a strong social history that is fascinating. “Qualicum Beach used to be the place to come and it was pretty high end. The Queen and other high society types would come up on the train from Victoria and get off in Qualicum Beach.” You don’t have to descend from royal blood to attend the August 23rd party. Everyone is invited to the community celebration at the Qualicum Beach Train Station, which goes from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m
