Shoreline Muscial theatre Presents

Most of us are familiar with the 1964 Walt Disney musical film Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, based on the novels written by P.L. Travers in the 1930s. The stage adaptation, that Shoreline Musical Theatre will perform, premiered on Broadway in 2006. It is an original musical and not a replica of the movie. Synopsis: Set in 1910 during the Edwardian Period, the musical's stage adaptation is based on the movie’s songs and characters but has a new take on the story. The Banks family needs Mary Poppins to nanny their children because they need to learn how to be a family. Winifred Banks has a fuller storyline, George Banks has a backstory, and the children have a bit more room to grow from being spoiled and bratty to kind and thoughtful. An important moment in the show occurs with “Feed the Birds.” Following a scene at George Banks’ office, in which Jane asks a single, pointed question of her father about recognizing value, Mary takes Jane and Michael past St. Paul’s Cathedral. The Bird Woman sings the Sherman Brothers’ classic, “Feed the Birds,” which was first heard in the movie, though in a different context. The song articulates something essential to the story: Small gestures of

kindness, rather than monetary transactions, are what fill our lives with joy, satisfaction, and meaning. “Mary Poppins The Broadway Musical” is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI, 423 West 55th Street, New York, NY 10019
