Post Traumatic Stress Disorder I seldom spoke of my experiences in the years that followed as each time that I did my heart raced and I physically relived the horror. The programme that was responsible for the joyful interaction in everyday life was overridden by a programme of self defense that had identified everything as a potential threat, including its host. This violent coup-de-ta could not be reversed overnight and it became apparent that tactics of psychological warfare had to be implemented and so the gradual process of brainwashing myself back into the present moment began. I travelled for years seeking out joy and freedom from this dictatorship and avoiding stress at all costs until one day I tried a yoga class and momentarily shifted my brain back to the safety

and simplicity of the present moment. I began to practice yoga regularly as I instinctively knew that I had stumbled across a pathway home. The constant centering and bringing awareness into my body awakened my body’s power and intelligence enough to slowly usurp this unwanted ruler and re-establish balance. My endocrine and nervous systems were slowly realigned with my real environment and even though the memories were not erased, they became more of a referral to the past rather than a reaction to the present. The defense hormones were put on standby and the ‘feel good’ hormones flowed again; and I strode, taller, stronger and more open to life, back home. The regular practice of Yoga has not only cured me of PTSD but has allowed me to consciously evolve my body to better cope with stress. Practicing yoga is like turning on a light in your body. All the shadows of the past are simply transformed into light; and this light slowly starts to radiate out, until you start to glow again like children do. There is no quick fix but just one glimpse at your real self will be enough to want to stride on towards the light. You do not need to be a war veteran to suffer

9 from PTSD. Anyone who has been involved in an accident, been the victim of an attack or abuse or witnessed anything traumatic may suffer from the disorder. The symptoms of which would include: The most noticeable signs are introversion and joylessness. Having trouble sleeping is almost inevitable in this syndrome. The inability to keep memories of the event from returning. An attempt to avoid stimuli and triggers that may bring back those memories. Hyper arousal, which is similar to jumpiness. It may include insomnia (trouble sleeping), a tendency to be easily startled, a constant feeling that danger or disaster is nearby, an inability to concentrate, extreme irritability, or even violent behaviour. Depression is very likely to go hand in hand with PTSD. If you suffer from PTSD know that you are not lost; there is a doorway back to yourself on a yoga mat. JOKE

25 Years of Marriage A man married 25 years took a look at his wife one day and said, “Honey, 25 years ago, we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10inch black-and-white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 25-year-old blonde. Now, we have a nice house, a nice car, a big bed and a big-screen plasma TV, but I’m sleeping with a 50-year-old woman. It seems to me that you’re not holding up your side of things.” But his wife was a very reasonable woman. She told him to go out and find a hot 25-year-old blonde, and she’d make sure that he would once again be living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car and sleeping on a sofa bed.

Pet Tips

Dr Stacey (Sunrise vet)

Rabbits: Rabbits are very clean animals making them ideal for working with immunodeficient individuals such as those undergoing cancer treatments. Touch is one of the most beneficial forms of animal assisted therapy and the variety of fur types found in rabbits makes them ideal for this type of therapy activity. In cases where a client has been abused and physical touch has become a form of stress and anxiety animals can fill that instinctive need in a safe non threatening manner during the rehabilitation period.

‘Tis the season to have a lot of fun with our pets. Fact: Pet’s at Christmas are like monkeys who get into trouble, sometimes serious trouble. The most common reason pets need to see vets during this time is eating something that doesn’t agree with their stomach. Vomiting, diarrhea, leading to pancreas and liver damage, or simply surgery to retrieve the little plastic alien from Toy Story (you know the one), from their stomach. Since doggies and kitties like to have fun and rummage through the Christmas garbage, the best thing you can do is lock the fridge and take the garbage outside- like right away. Remember what’s good for the goose is not necessarily good for the hound especially the grease. And oh ya, don’t forget to tie the tree top to the hook in the wall, no tinsel in cat tummies please, and you might want to cover the tree water trap if your adding preservatives like bleach and borax. So have a great time and don’t forget, December is “Don’t forget about your pet’s health” month at Sunrise Vet. Get 10% off your pet’s wellness exam and health services.

Hey don’t forget about me! Our Gift to you. 10%OFF your pet’s visit and health services when you come in December.

homes Newest in Flooring If you like the look of tiles but are put off by the coldness of stone and grout, a great new alternative is the new Alterna premium tile flooring. It is the innovative alternative to natural stone and ceramic tiles. Like stone and ceramic it is incredibly beautiful and durable. Its comfortable surface makes it warmer to the touch, kinder to your feet and easy to care for. No matter how close you look its hard to see the difference between Alterna tile and natural Quartz, Slate or Marble.

Sometimes making one major change in the kitchen is enough to lift the whole room, so if you don’t want to mess with the cabinetry, cast an objective eye over the back-splash as it’s a way to inject some personality into the room without going over the top.

FOOD & WINE PAIRING FOR CHRISTMAS Dinner is served Make your Christmas supper sing with wine matches that compare and contrast the flavours. For roast meat with a caramelized edge like turkey, goose, or duck opt for rich red wines such as Pinot Noir, Zinfandel or traditional Claret. White wine works well as a contrast to roast meat, so try a chilled, crisp Sauvingnon Blanc or a delicate buttery Chardonnay.

Room for dessert?

Dessert calls for a change of pace, and that goes for the wine too. Team traditional Christmas pudding, with wine such as a Muscat or Sauternes

After dinner drinks

Keep up momentum with a lip-smacking port to have with your cheese board. A Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) or 10-year-old Tawney are both wonderful pairings for strong cheeses

Happy hour

Christmas cocktails are a fun way to keep the party going. Hot cocktails such as mulled wine or warm cider punch are both great winter warmers. Incorporate festive colours and flavours in to your drinks with a vodka, martini with a cranberry kiss, pomegranate shots, or Prosecco Royale. vodka martini with a cranberry kiss, pomegranate shots, or Prosecco Royale.
